Thanks Olive. I'm so glad that you enjoyed my book, "Cannibalism". You've been extremely kind and supportive. I've just finished the overview for my next nonfiction book but until that comes out your readers might enjoy my first book, "Dark Banquet: Blood and the Curious Lives of Blood-Feeding Creatures", or the R.J. MacCready books ("Hell's Gate" and "The Himalayan Codex"). I'm currently writing book number 3.
Bill Schutt It's been my pleasure to highlight your wonderful book on my channel! I've already picked up Dark Banquet - can't wait to pick it up this year while I eagerly await new nonfiction from you 😊
I LOVE YOUR LOVE OF NONFICTION
I LOVE
YOUR LOVE
OF MY LOVE
OF NON FICTION
You are so gosh darn eloquent I started getting emotional at your discussion of your number one pick
amberinoface oh my goodness, thank you! I certainly didn't mean to make anyone emotional, but it is a very emotional book, after all...
I literally put Cannibalism on the Nonfiction Staff Favorites table at work (we put books there that we love but also ones we've heard recommended), so I put it there because of your rec a bit ago. A couple hours later I saw a young woman with 6+ books stacked on her arm walk by the table, do a double take and come back to the table, read the title and flap, and add Cannibalism to her huge pile of books. I love watching people at the Staff Favorites table get sucked in *evil laugh*. See, your videos are truly educational for my job.
Also I need to read Being Mortal next year!
splitreads ahahaha I love that!! I would be super interested to know what she thought about it 😂
The dean of health sciences at my university probably read Atul Gawande's book, "Being Mortal." We literally did a sociology course for health sciences which talked about the "medicalisation" of things like ageing, ie pointing out that a biomedical approach is not enough, despite being well meaning. That book sounds amazing. I need it.
A nice selection with just enough information to make them intriguing. Love your outro music by ProleterR, I had never heard of the artist before. Really nice neo-swing!
I rarely ready non-fiction, but your videos on the topic are making me a lot more interested in picking up a few non-fiction books on different topics. Your non-fiction videos this year have been really well done and engaging. Thanks.
Thank you so much! I hope you do end up picking up more nonfiction :)
I was desperate for an audiobook while cleaning my *entire* house today, so imagine how delighted I was when NOT ONLY did you make How Music Got Free sound absolutely perfect, but my library also had an audiobook copy all ready to go!
Absolutely fantastic video!
!!! Let me know how you like it!!!
Being Mortal is my favorite on this list. I’m an ICU nurse, and I see the things Gawande talks about every day. It’s very eye opening to see how many people have never had that conversation about their wishes with their loved ones. People put off the conversation about a good death because “ it’s morbid” but so important.
Totally agree. I realized as I was reading that it's so uncommon to talk about death and what you want for yourself at the end and how huge of an issue that causes during an already horrible time in one's life. I think that list of questions to ask your loved ones that he provided is invaluable.
I always get the most unique non-fiction recommendations from your channel. Loved this. 2017 was not as great for my non-fiction reading as 2016, well reading in general, but I want to binge in 2018.
Aww, thank you! I'm sure 2018 will be a great nonfiction year for you - and hopefully for me as well (I'm planning on reading The Joy of Tax after seeing you talk about it a while back). Sending lots of love & well wishes your way
I (rather loudly) shouted in agreement with your number one pick: Being Mortal. I think part of my fondness for it stems from it's relevance to my life at the time I read it, but also...it's just that good! I'm glad to know you enjoyed it too. Sidenote: I've had Cannibalism on my nightstand for weeks now but have failed to pick it up. After your review, I find myself wondering--What the heck am I waiting for?! Thanks for your suggestions. 😊
I am completely sold on The Man without a Face, but apparently so are too many other people at the library...so I guess I’m going to read The New Tsar until my hold comes in. Also, I havent read being mortal yet, but I got to see Atul Gawande give an interview about it on stage, and it was really impactful. Especially after watching my parents take care of my grandmother in India, my husband and I came out of the event with a different perspective on the kinds of conversations we need to have with each other and our families.
Oh wow, I haven't read any of these (though I Contain Multitudes is on my list) but now they are all added to the TBR pile, especially Being Mortal! Great video.
Thank you! I hope you enjoy them all!
Sounds like you read some awesome books this year! I’m filming my top7 tomorrow! Happy new year!
Thank you for all of your non-fiction recommendations. Non-fiction is a genre I struggle with but thanks to your inspiring recommendations I’ve found some amazing books which I’ve really enjoyed. I look forward to your next video!
Thank you so much :) It's my pleasure to spread the love of nonfiction to booktube, hehe!
abookolive I just got my hands on The Soul Of An Octopus, I thought it sounds very interesting and I can’t wait to read it :D I’ve also added a couple from the ones you’ve mentioned in this video to my wish list ;) hope you have a wonderful New Year!
Definitely adding all of these to my TBR. One of my goals for 2018 is more non-fiction, so these will be a great place to get started.
Thanks in part to your enthusiasm about non-fiction, I've made it a goal in 2018 to have at least one non-fiction read going at all times. My first pick of 2018 is going to be When Breath Becomes Air by Paul Kalanithi (which also satisfies a Read Harder Challenge prompt!)
I read Being Mortal in 2016 and I think When Breath Becomes Air will be a great follow-up since Paul Kalanithi was also a doctor - a neurosurgeon, I think. I'm curious to see if their views on end-of-life care overlap.
Oh, that's so wonderful! I think you'll find reading more nonfic really rewarding :) It's generally my habit to be reading a fiction book and a nonfiction book at the same time. I find it works well. :)
From everything I hear about When Breath Becomes Air, I do think it's somewhat similar to Being Mortal. It's my impression that WBBA is more personal - more of a first-hand account whereas Being Mortal is more dominated by larger discussions about aging and death. I definitely need to read WBBA in the near future (when my heart can handle it).
I now want to read Being Mortal! I would like to thank you for all your videos about non fiction: you made me discover great books, and I read more non fiction now! Wish you good reads!! xx
My pleasure! I hope you enjoy Being Mortal :)
Happy New Year!!! I read "Being Mortal" and found it my #1 as well. I would also like to suggest "When Breath Becomes Air." I could not put that book down. I enjoy watching your channel and have purchased books from your recommendations. Thank you for showcasing Nonfiction.
It's been suggested by several of my friends that I read When Breath Becomes Air! I think it touches on some similar themes as Being Mortal?
After I finished watching your countdown I bought cannibalism a natural history, from amazon. It was meant to be. The book was on sale (kindle) for $1.99. As always, your videos are enthusiastic and informative. Thank You!
I agree with cannibalism a natural history! I picked it up because of your review and LOVED it! So thanks for that :) It’s made me want it read even more non fiction.
ahhhhh that makes my heart so happy! I'm thrilled that you loved it!
I love the sound of the cannibal book. I'm going to see if my library has it. Being Mortal is such an important book. The older I get the more I wonder about this sort of stuff, so it's wonderful to get such a perspective on end of life stuff.
Whoa! I'm gonna have to read these. Interested, of course, in the Cannibalism, but also the music one and Being Mortall!!
I can't wait for you to read Cannibalism! (I was going to say "I can't wait for you to experience Cannibalism...but that sounds ENTIRELY wrong, lol). I can't wait for our buddy readdddddddddddd
This video is great, I am planning to read more nonfiction in 2018 and have been looking for interesting ones to pick, recommended man without a face for my library while still watching your video :D
I read Being Mortal this year and really enjoyed it too. I've added the rest of your list to my TBR! I wanted to try and read at least 12 non-fiction books this year (which I did!), some of my favourites were In Order to Live by Yeonmi Park, So You've Been Publicly Shamed by Jon Ronson and Lion by Saroo Brierley. My favourite non-fiction book of all time is still Brain on Fire by Susannah Cahalan though, it's amazing.
Being Mortal was my favorite non-fiction book of the year too! So very good, and will stay with me for a long, long time. Another one I really enjoyed this year was The Underground Girls of Kabul.
This was such a joy to listen to. Even the Cannibalism book sounds intriguing
Thanks! Intriguing is definitely a word I'd use to describe the book on Cannibalism, haha!
Your videos are always so thpughtful! Have you read Animal Encounters by Craig Childs? It is a collection of short essays about 30ish different animals that the author has met during his time in the wilderness. Although most of the essays are narratives reflecting on the experience, the author weaves in some fascinating science about the animals. I find it fascinating and it's encouraged me to find more books on animals I am particularly interested in after reading the essays. There's a large section on birds!
Well that just added five more books to my TBR! Luckily, I already own Being Mortal, so it's just a matter of finding the rest. :)
The Man Without a Face is at the top of my Early 2018 TBR.
Awesome choices. I'm especially interested in the one about Putin. 2017 has been a shit nonfiction year for me, so this video is a great reminder to make more of an effort in 2018
I think you'll really enjoy Masha Gessen's style. I'm sure you'll have a better nonfiction year in 2018!
Great video ... personally I am waiting for my book outlet box to arrive, I purchased Cannibalism a perfectly natural history amount other books. 😆
There are few things more exciting than awaiting the arrival of a Book Outlet box, haha! Enjoy!
I am so very interested in that book about Putin!!!
I see Cheburashka and Crocodil Gena on your shelf, that’s so sweet!!! ❤️👍
Not read any of them but now I defiantly want to!
Love to hear it!
Cannibalism by Bill Schutt is also on my top books of 2017 list.
yessss :)
I haven't read A Man Without a Face, but I feel I need to soon. One of my Favorite non fiction books of 2017 was "All The Kremlin's Men" , which is about Putin's inner circle. You may like that one. It is a quick read and to me felt like a Russian soap opera :)
I know I have heard of All the Kremlin's Men, but for whatever reason I didn't have it on my to-read shelf. GASP! I fixed that :)
Awesome beautiful abookolive.
Can you please do
Books on Russia and history and politics.
Books on Russian revolution
Books on Russia and WW2
Books on Russia post WW2
Books on breakup of Russia
Many thanks.
You are doing a great service.
May I suggest altruistic way to share books so that one need not get all the books listed by so many youtubers.
Say RUclipsr A has 10 books
Say RUclipsr B has 10 books.
Both live about 20 mile radius.
On every month Bookclubbers bring their books to a set place MC Donald car park or restaurant.
RUclipsr A exchanges 10 books with youtuber B.
In this way you get 10 books free to read.
You can increase the size of the book readers to 10 in which case you get to read 100 books free of cost.
I hope you get the point.
In my opinion books and knowledge should cost very little.
Hope you will give a thought.
