Nancy Wilson--How she plays Battle Of Evermore on mandolin

  • She doesn't play it exactly like Jimmy, but I like what she's done with it. I adopted a blend of the two when I learned it years ago..here's a link to video of myself playing it on mandolin, along with my brother and sister-in-law on guitars: • Battle of Evermore cov...
    NOTE to anybody about to leave a comment that JPJ played the mandolin in Zeppelin: Jimmy Page played mandolin on this song (JPJ played acoustic guitar). He wrote the music for it after picking up and messing around on Jonesy's mandolin one day.

    I seen Heart in Houston at the Summit somewhere around 1984. I was at the stage watching Nancy rip it up on a Guild Burnside electric guitar with Howard Leese. The Vocals between Ann, Nancy and the rest of the band were incredible. Magic Man was off the chain, Barracuda, Crazy On You, Tell it Like it is, and the Vocal on Dog and Butterfly, Still inspires me to this day. Wish I could have met them an have an acoustic jam. That would have been a Dream Come true.

      She isn't a great player.
      She was in a good band and she wrote some good riffs.

      Carol Kaye would be the best musician in any band that she played in.

    • @daf827
      @daf827 4 года назад +28

      ocumstweezers OK, I stand corrected. She’s not a “great” player like Carol Kaye, one of the greatest session musicians ever. Wrecking Crew legend. Guitar and bass. Nor does Nancy have the chops of, say, Jennifer Batten, who can shred with the best, including Jeff Beck. She’s still a very fine guitarist, singer and songwriter in a legendary band with many hits. And she strikes me as a lovely human being. I used an imprecise word. You win the debate. Feel better?

    • @ocumstweezers
      @ocumstweezers 4 года назад +1

      @@daf827 I feel good about being an honest person.
      I love Nancy Wilson for who she is, not for who i wish she was.
      She is a much better guitarist than I could ever be, but putting her on a pedestal like Peter Green, Duane Allman, Ry Cooder, Django and Jimi, and calling her 'great" is a bridge too far.
      I don't throw the term 'Great" around blithely.
      I don't know Jennifer Batton, but I know you can give a 'great musician' a kazoo, and they will kazoo the fvck out of a session, that is greatness.
      We cool?

    • @daf827
      @daf827 4 года назад +10

      ocumstweezers Definitely not putting her on a pedestal. There are many better guitar players than Nancy Wilson, male and female. I just think she’s a fine musician and she seems like a lovely person. I reckon you interpreted my use of the word “great” as including her within the pantheon of fretboard legends like Hendrix, Beck, Page, etc. Arguing over who is a better guitarist is an exercise in futility. It was an off-the-cuff remark made in the spirit of the video. Nothing more. Do check out Jennifer Batten jamming with Beck on RUclips.

If you can post a link to anything of him directly stating that it was Jason, I'd like to see it. I found this article where he DOES talk about it, and it seems it was not Heart or Jason specifically that moved him, just kind of a wave of emotion about loss (meaning mostly John I guess) and how the song had taken flight and become what it remains today: ledzepnews.com/2018/06/23/robert-plant-on-stairway-to-heaven-its-like-a-relative-of-mine-somewhere/

    A video on instrument playing that actually highlights the part every musician need to know; the fingering!? How many times have we seen vids that show the right hand, the face, something else rather than the one fucking thing they want, the left hand. Thanks for doing it properly.

    Before even hearing the Wilson sisters, the entire African American portion of the audience of an awards show I regularly attended (except Quincy Jones' table) got up and walked out leaving 1/3 of the place empty. After they had received the lifetime award from ASCAP in 2009(?) and the entire awards show had moved to a separate room with tables and a stage, Wyclef Jean was scheduled to perform then The Wilson Sisters. Unfortunately the African-American portion of the audience never heard one of the greatest the most soulful singers of the last few generations and her uber talented sister on guitar. Yet we had to sit through a performance of Wyclef Jean who is not a singer not an instrumentalist and not much of a performer. Thank goodness the heart girls never disappoint. That night, I gained a New perspective on African-American artists/songwriters/performers/people. That was a totally classless move and they had no idea what they were about to miss. Quincy Jones and his entire entourage did though and they stayed and cheered these legends on to the last song!!
