I’m a guy in a band who played every thing so I got tasked with this song and your video just made it a whole hell of a lot easier. Thanks
Awesome, good luck with it :)
John Paul Jones?
Thanks - great stuff. It's got Bob Ross vibe to it, “There are no mistakes, just happy accidents.”
Much appreciated :)
Thank you do much. I have an Eastman 505 coming. I used to play Mandolin many years ago, but gave it away to a loved one.
It’s gone now, so I bought another one.
Thanks again.
A 505? Sweet! Very jealous - Have a great day :)

Thank you. I feel like I got alot out of that. I had bad week and took me back to normalicy. Your so chill. Wish I wasn't wound up like a flipping mad man. But it is what it is so have good day buddy. Thank you again.
Thanks so much - music is a great place to retreat from the world sometimes. Have a great day :)
Always a mandolin favorite. I played this a little in the past, but your playing is better than me so I’m looking forward to cleaning this up. Thanks for the continued inspiration Neal. Another great lesson!
Thanks bud, have fun :)
GREAT TUTORIAL.... SO MANY GREAT CHORD TONES TO USE ...GREAT JOB
Thanks so much :)
Hey Neal -- I've got a funny story for ya, dude. Many years ago I was at an annual Bluegrass Festival in Sandpoint, Idaho. I stopped to listen to three mando pickers jamming with a guitar, fiddle and a bass. These guys were mighty fine musicians for being amateurs. There was a pretty good sized crowd gathered around, as I recall. Anyway, there was this one guy with his camera snapping photos. The next day I happen to be in Sandpoint to get some groceries and stuff for my partner. I saw a newspaper. The caption by the photo said, " Local music enthusiasts strumming their ukuleles"! I bought a copy of the paper to show these guys and we all got a big laugh out of the caption. The reporter who wrote the line had probably never seen a mandolin. No, they ain't no stinkin' Ukelalies!!! Cheers, my friend and thanks for the Zep tune
Ha - that's perfect! Especially at a bluegrass festival, you'd think they'd get that right :) I've taken my Mandolin to the beach in Florida many times and everyone thinks it's a ukulele, but that's kind of what you expect on a tropical beach. A bluegrass festival in Idaho is extra funny :) Thanks for the laugh and thanks for checking out the channel!
I Busk playing Mando and I get "What is that"?, "Is that a Banjo"?, "Is that Ukulele"?, "Is that a Lute" all the Time...
Hello! This is a wonderful tutorial. Thank you so much for posting this! Cheers and love from a fellow Zep enthusiast.
- Atticus
Thanks so much - Have a great day :)
Dude, you've got the most excellent vibe! I wanna hang on a beach with ya, while you tell me stories of life and its lessons.
Abide.
Hey, thanks so much :) I’m in Minneapolis and it’s January, so I wish we were on that beach right now!
You would think I had nothing else to do getting a comment in so quickly. Well, you'd be right actually. We are in total lock-down so RUclips keeps me entertained, plus working on a few new songs for you. Thanks for posting this tutorial. It's a cool song, ay?
Good afternoon up there! It is indeed a cool song that, amazingly, I hadn’t learned until a couple of weeks ago. It’s good to have it in the bag :) Stay safe - I’m hopeful that with the arrival of the vaccines that things might be better soon!
Very helpful indeed! Nicely presented. Thank you!
Hey, thanks so much :) Have a great day!
Great video , certainly the best tutorial of this awesome zep song anywhere on the web 🤘
Thanks so much :)
Superb. Thanks from a Scotsman that picked up a mandolin for the first time 2 months ago. It was your intro videos that got me started and this one is the icing on the cake! I looked at all the mandolin sites on RUclips but you're the only guy on there I'd be happy to have a beer with! Your style suits me fine. Keep em coming and I'll try and keep up. Cheers!
I’m honored - tip one for me! Cheers :)
Great video man! Thanks!
Thanks for the lesson. I'm a guitar player who plays a little mandolin. Eastmans are great. I have a couple. Thanks again.
Hey there, thanks for checking out the video! Somewhere on my page is one called “Mandolin for Guitar Players” that might be right up your alley :)
@@COMANDOLIN I'll check it out. Thanks!
Great stuff--love your videos!
Whenever someone asks me to show them something on mandolin, GTC is the one I always play, everybody seems to recognize this song. It also lends itself very nicely to improvisation and I'm always hearing something else that would sound cool for the next go around. John Paul Jones never played this the same way twice and seemed to have a lot of fun changing it around---we should too!
Hey there - it’s all about the variations and improvisation :) It is great to see him play it in several videos and check out the differences. Appreciate you watching and have a great day!
Great lesson learned from it thanks
Great to hear - Thanks much :)
Thanks Neal great video great cover must do more LED zeppelin.
Thanks bud, much appreciated :)
Thanks very much for this really clear & accurate tutorial which I'm determined to master no matter how long it takes ..! Have a great day too.
Thanks so much - good luck with it :)
Excellent! I was looking forward to seeing the breakdown. Now to make some "extra time" to practice.
Keep Rockin!
Good morning Bob - I hope it’s fun! Have a great day and thanks as always :)
highly enjoyable and informative. loved it.
Thank you :)
Love this song & this tutorial is so great!! Thank you so much !!!
Awesome - thank you! Have fun with it :)
Very well presented!
Hi there, is this Ron Taylor from Arkansas by chance? Do we know each other from way, way back?
Dude I love this tutorial, the only thing is, I CAN'T HEAR YOU!!! It'd be great if you could mic your voice so it's a bit louder. Otherwise, thanks for the great lesson.
Hey there - sorry about the quietness. I’ve been making a concerted effort to be louder recently and hopefully the newer ones are better :)
Excellent
Thanks much :)
Mil Gracias
excellent lesson love love love it! how bout a greatful dead lesson for ripple
Ooh, good thinking - I love that song in both the Dead and Jane’s Addiction version!
Nice!!!
Thanks bud :)
Unfortunately this was not a mandolin tutorial for Going to California. This was how to play Going to California using a mandolin. Not how JPJ did and not useful if you wanted to play the song with an accompanying guitar. My son just bought a mandolin and I was looking for a mandolin tutorial and can’t seem to find one. He is now learning it by ear and I am learning the guitar part. It will be a fun duet.
Just subscribed, I would love any music on this.. pdf or text. Thanks, jeff
Hey there, thanks so much :) I did this one quite a while before I had the tabs program and would be a prime candidate to redo. I’m sorry, though, at the moment there aren’t any.
Do you have the tab for this? Maybe on your Patreon?
I’m sorry, I don’t. I’m still trying to figure out how to make my own tabs.
@@COMANDOLIN ok, that’s too bad. Great job on a great song. 👍
Any thoughts on buying a decent mandolin without spending 1000.00 dollars? I know dirt cheap 50 and 60 dollar mandolins aren't worth crap.
Sure - I used to always recommend Eastman or Kentucky Mandolins because they are spectacular, but they’ve gone up in price and are now north of $500. They would still be a great instrument to start on if you have the $$. To keep it under $500, I’d recommend “the Loar”. The Honey creek line that you can get at guitar center would make for a fine starter. They’re running about $300 give or take and are going to be about the best you can do at that range.
@@COMANDOLIN thank you very much!
Please play the song ALL THE WAY THROUGH. All I can find online is segments and pieces but never the whole song run all the way through.
: (
Sorry, that’s a pet level of mine as well and I always try to link up my tutorials with the full song video. I generally do one video where I play it and one as the tutorial and put links to each other. Having said that, it looks like this one got by me when I put this one up. I’ve fixed it and put the link in the description to the full play through. Sorry about that :)
@@COMANDOLIN Thank you so much! Thanks for listening and for the reply. This is the version I'm focused on learning. Much appreciated.
@@reflector2032 - Have a great day :)
How stoned are you
Right now or in the video?
