I have two of these in black it is my fave pen out of my whole collection, the red looks real nice as well. Not to many reviews on you tube of the 743 so nice to have this one especially in the red colour.
Man, just when I thought: "Wow, he had both the 743 and the 823" bam! He pulls out the Pelikan M800! The 743 and M800 are both THE two pens I want the most after owning my 823 for a while. We basically have the same taste in pens and nibs (favoring the medium in Japanese sizes). Great video. I'm about ready to pull the trigger on a 743. Then it will only be a matter of saving up for up to a year to get my dream Pelikan M800. I wonder if the M800 Fine nib or Medium nib is closer to the Pilot Medium...
Great✒️review! 🙂 I have a Custom 823 and a couple of Custom 74's. I'd love to have a 743 for the collection. I love the Deep Red colour. My other half went through Pensachi for my Clear Custom 823 so I'll check them out to see about acquiring one of these. Glad I came across your channel! 🙂
I am partial to Pilot pens, so I will probably end up importing one of these. The deep red color is attractive, too bad Pilot does not make that color available in other models.
Very nice review. I have the 823 in a fine, and would like to maybe get this one in a medium. I like the resin/plastic the 823 is made from, It seems more substantial and better quality than, say, the Custom 74. I also like the larger sized nib. Would you say this pen has the same feel as the 823? Also, how was shipping from Pensachi? Their prices seem good, I just don’t want to wait a month for my pen.
The 743 has a very similar feel to the 823. The writing experience is the same. The only difference is the balance of the 823 is slightly more back heavy than the 743. I prefer the 743. Pensachi was a fine experience, but the shipping was slow. I received the pen three weeks after I ordered. Pensachi took two weeks to ship the pen. Transit across the Pacific and to my home only took 5 days.
@@xiujiawang3355 Amazon US has them, and other than eBay, seems to have the lowest price. Usually a few days shipping. I decided to go with the less pricey 742, though. I don’t really want a flex nib, and with the 742, you can order it with regular nibs, you don’t have to get the flex. I have been trying for weeks to decide on the 743, 742, or a 74 in medium. (I don’t really care for my 74 fine nib, I just don’t get all the love for that pen) So, the 742 is on its way….hope I like it. Pensachi really does have some of the best prices I’ve seen, and some nice options you don’t see here in the US as far as colors go, especially with the Sailor pens. Pilot pens are $110 for the Custom 74…..around $130 with shipping. I think I paid close to $175 for mine at a US pen shop. It’s not close to worth that much. So I would still order from Pensachi, but only when I don’t mind waiting. This week I just didn’t feel like waiting.
The 742 nib is slightly smaller than the 743 and the pen as a whole is slightly smaller too. Aesthetically, the 742 has 2 stars on the cap band and the 743 had 3 stars. 742 costs less too. They are very similar pens.
A small question: for butter smooth writing experience with the Pilot 743, would you recommend Medium or Broad nib. Thank you, this post is very helpful review on the topic.
The pen arrived in good condition. It took two weeks to arrive. The original order confirmation said the pen would ship in 7 days but it really took 14 days so be patient.
Thank you indeed for the helpful insight ! As I go over some other custom 743 (Larry's fountain pen, Pensachi has post on size 15 14k M nib and B nib). I notice some difference in the M nib size 15 writing samples in your video and others. The sample in this video has finer line than almost all other writing samples - including from sellers. Is your nib size M or minor variation. It is likely that you write by exerting light pressure compared to others. Thanks if you can please reply :) . I also wonder if Japanese sellers give assured quality or Pilot purchase from ebay is ok (many say New - unused - unboxed etc.).
I write with very light pressure compared to most. I'm also using a standard Pilot ink which is a bit drier than the Iroshizuku inks most people use with Pilot pens. Those are likely the two reasons for my thinner lines.
I have 912 in SM and VP in M, both write wider than shown in the video. If you write with normal preassure, you could try FM. I have a 742 in SFM that writes more closer to the shown sample.

You can get a Deep Red Pilot Custom 742 and 74 if you import them.
Glad you said it writes better than the pelikan m800
Great details - technical & aesthetic, thank you. Could you please do a comparison of pilot 74 and the 743.
I would love to, but I don't have a 74 :(

@@geslinam9703 Just wondering how you like your 742...I'm trying to decide on a pen right now. It's so tough. Thanks!
I would love an 823 Amber in cartridge converter style, what would you suggest? Thanks in advance.

I have a medium nib and it's very smooth. Use a Pilot ink because they are wet and will give additional smoothness.
How was your experience with pensachi? I'm looking to buy a Custom 74 from Japan but it's hard to know which sources to trust. Thanks for the video!

4:17 That's converter 70 right, bro?
Yes, it's Pilot's CON-70 converter.
isn't the m800 $350?
The Brown Black M800 is a special edition and costs more than the regular colors.
@@putteringpenman ok, thanks for the info
