***EDIT 4/25***
Update from LizardByte (author of Sunshine):
Sunshine should be installed as a service if you want it to start with your PC. Running as a service gives us additional control over the priorities of the GPU and we can deliver lower latency streams versus running sunshine in foreground mode (manually). This should also allow you to control the UAC prompts.
Original Description:
In this video I break down how to stream ALL of your games in ONE place by utilizing Moonlight game streaming (via Sunshine) together with the Playnite game organizer.
With this method, you can stream any game on your computer from an easy to navigate game manager. That means you can play all of your Steam games, Xbox PC Game Pass games, Epic games, GOG games, and more as well as your Retro ROMs and emulators all in ONE place- and its accessible on any device that has the Moonlight app available, of which there are many: including iPhone, Android, iPad, Apple TV, Android TV, Google TV, and more- even PS Vita!

Wow! First of all, thanks for watching my video- and secondly thanks very much for commenting that correction info, I’ll put an edit in the description for now, but I’ll have to make an updated video! (FYI for those watching and reading this, lizardbyte is the author of Sunshine)

After trying many setups, Steam ROM Manager is working great. It can add all other PC and Emulator games to Steam. So now I have categories for EA, Amazon, GOG, Ubisoft, etc. as well as Nintendo, Super Nintendo, and other emultaors. All of these stream from my PC to TV. I still use Playnite to see eveything I own across the game stores, but then I use SRM to add my installed games to Steam.
Nice!! I’ve since gone back to using SRM myself, with the addition of GlosSI for Xbox Game Pass PC games added to Steam. It’s working great! I’ll probably make another video about it soon. Thanks for watching!!
@@dylanmacintosh Looks like GlosSI might have been taken down... Do you have an alternative solution or any idea where I can find/install GlosSI today?
@@dylanmacintosh it works great but when i launch a rom through steam it opens in windowed mode and looks terrible in big picture if i want to stream dolphin in Fullscreen i have to open it manly on my pc. if anyone can think of a fix i would really appreciate it iv tried setting launch options through steam but it causes my roms not to open at all my best guess is that i have to configure launch options inside srm but i have no idea how i would go about that.
@@Tigersharklive Great question, I usually will configure Fullscreen options in the emulator itself. Once you have your launcher setup you might not normally open "just the emulator" anymore, or you might not have even opened it on its own at all before. So for my first troubleshooting step, I'd say to navigate to each emulator's install path, open the emulator itself on your PC, and see what options you can configure in regards to fullscreen. Some will be a checkbox, and some will be a memory setting (where it will open each time to how it was left when it closed), so trying fullscreening the emulator, and then closing it, then opening again to see if it sticks. If the emulator can run fullscreen on its own, then it should also stand to reason that it can start fullscreen while streaming. I hope this helps, let me know if you have any more questions!
@@dylanmacintosh thanks mate also have a question about controller support using big picture and steam link. when using steam link to open steam games my controller that's connected to my apple tv works great but as soon as i open a rom i have to use another controller that's plugged into my pc its not that big of an issue my pcs pretty close but it would be so much nicer if i could just use the one controller. the controller I'm using is the switch pro controller i was just wondering if you might have any possible ideas for a fix thanks :)
Thank you for getting in the comments and answering troubleshooting questions. I've been considering moonlight as an alternative to steam link. I've used steamlink for years to stream to my tablet (I dont have have a steamlink box or anything). And it worked ok for years, but occasionally has issues. Lately, over the last year or two, the mouse input lag has gotten worse and worse, and causes regular control bugs in game. I always thought it was my wireless mouse interferring with the wifi streaming due to bluetooth overlapping 2.4 ghz freqencies with wifi. But after much troubleshooting (forcing both host and tablet onto 5 ghz wifi, and using a USB-C extension to run both a wired mouse and keyboard at the same time), it didnt fix it, and I've since come to the conclusion that Steamlink is sort of becoming abandonware (at least, outside of the steamlink box and controller support). Im not the only one with mouse issues on steamlink, and Steam has refused to address it. Theres something wrong with how steamlink communicates mouse input from device to host. At this point, I figure it's probably worth trying out a more independent game streaming setup like moonlight.
I'll give it a shot, see if it works any better for me.
Wow, I’ve been struggling all this time to improve my controller experience that I never even considered mouse control issues while streaming- please try out Moonlight and let us know what you find! I’m sure that info could help a lot of people. And of course, I’ll try it out as well and maybe even make a video on it. Thanks for watching and commenting!
In my experience, Moonlight (without Playnite or another front end) is snappier than Steamlink with my mouse when streaming my home PC to my Android phone remotely. If I'm on my local network, I almost never see any delay.
I wanna do this for my Xbox and I downloaded the moonlight app but it doesn’t say add manually
Appreciate this video. I've been looking for a easy way to get all the games I want to stream to my vita in one easy place.
Thanks for this, what's the input lag, and resolution like on your TV streaming these games please?
installed as stated (streaming from pc to tablet) ... it all comes up but controller paired with tablet controls do not work? ... double checked controller not working through playnight
Great video, helped me a lot. However, I had to figure out how to configure sunshine to run properly and I needed to disable the GameStream in GeForce Experience and delete the paired computer from Moonlight in order to sunshine to be recognized by Moonlight and send me the pin to pair. So maybe you want to go deeper on those points in the future. Thank you!
Firstly, thanks for watching and glad I could be of some help! As for GameStream, great work finding those settings! That’s some good quality troubleshooting. Thank you for commenting as well, as it will help others looking to solve similar issues 🤘
I love Moonlight!
It's the predominant reason why I don't buy a SteamDeck. Every time I think about it I realize that I don't need it. I'm not going to play a SteamDeck anywhere other than in my home and with Moonlight, I can play all my PC games and Emus and even create custom shortcuts to all my games and even create ROM shortcuts with thumbnails to reflect as such.
I boot Moonlight and all my games show up and with my strong internet connection, my phone and a GameSir Pro or anything from Anbernic or Retroid, that's is all I need.
Exactlyyyyy. This mindset saved me from buying a Steam Deck for the longest time. Until I bought an ROG ALLY instead 🤣 Don’t worry, I’m working on a video comparison- Stay tuned.
One thing you miiight want to consider is, the Steam Deck's ergonomics are much better than the GameSir's. I have both and I always prefer the SD just for that sole reason.
@@JuliusGrohl much agreed. The Ally / Steam Deck type of console is just the perfect form factor for gaming on the go. Hard to say but we might be reaching peak handheld ☝️
O boy. Steam deck has basically become my gaming hub now. I can stream my desktop pc and ps5 to it. Also managed to set it up that it can do that over mobile internet since i got unlimited data. And if for some reason inet connection is borked i can play on the deck itself. I love this machine. The fact i can just grab it and go anywhere and have access to everything i want is insane. Sometimes for work i have to wait in the truck for like an hour or so and those moments are perfect to grab my deck and play something. Especially now that i can stream ps5 and pc to it. Play games at high quality wherever? Yes please. 5g network makes the connection pretty solid too. Im living in the future boys.
@@illianias amazing stuff! I’ve been using my ROG Ally very similarly. I think if you’ve already got a gaming PC, these handheld devices are a great way to “hybridize” your gaming PC setup and take your games on the go. New video about it coming soon!
really well thought out setup! thanks for sharing!
Thanks for watching and thanks for the kind words!
These videos have been great in helping me decide how to get my own setup going. One question I do have is how did you end up finding the latency using moonlight? I know you mentioned previously it wasn't perfect using steam link, was it any better with moonlight?
Thanks for the kind words- and great question! I don’t have the proper equipment to test the true latency, but I’ve been thinking I might have to do a simple test where I use the slo-mo mode on my camera to catch how many “frames” of lag Steam Link has versus Moonlight streaming to my TV in the living room. Also, I’m looking to replace my living room TV pretty soon, so once that happens I’ll make that testing video. Thanks for watching and I hope this helps!!
I ran into an issue where when i connect my xbox series controller to the Apple TV and am in Playnite, the start and select buttons do not work in game. For example i am unable to start Dark Souls because in the start screen i have to press start, but the start button on the controller doesnt work.
Thanks for this. There's just one problem I'm having that I'm hoping you can help with. I'm using Moonlight on my TV, which my PS4 controllers are paired to. I'm able to map all the buttons perfectly fine in Suyu, despite not actually having the controllers connected to my PC directly, but in reWASD the option to map anything on a gamepad is greyed out, presumably because it doesn't see any gamepads connected to my PC. Any idea how I can get around this since there's no easy way to exit Switch games and it's a pain to have to get up each time and go to my PC to quit them?
One other thing I'd like to add if anyone is interested is that you can add an image for Playnite in your browser if you want to make it look a little nicer in Moonlight.
Edit: I actually can configure it in reWASD when connected to my TV, I just can't figure out how the hell to map Ctrl+Q to the PS Button to exit games. I swear I did it correctly, but it isn't working when I'm in a game.
Thank you! This is the exact setup I was looking for!
Of course! Glad I could be of help 🙏
Anyone know how I can stream my pc games (non steam included) to a Chromecast that's connected to a tv ?? I have tried everything from Steamlink to Moonlight and nothing works for me.
Please help
Hey thank you for that clear guide! Helps a lot. I noticed you've got what seem to me like Yamaha HS 5 on your desk or behind it on stands. How do you like them? What do you listen to with them? I read they lack some bass reproduction etc...
Hey thanks for watching and great question! You have a keen eye, my desk setup has the Yamaha HS8s (8 inch woofers rather than the HS5 5 inch woofers but the design is the same) on Gator monitor stands that attach to the sides of my standing desk. I bought these Yamaha HS8 studio monitors primarily for music production and they run off a Focusrite Scarlett 18i8 audio interface, though they certainly do a great job for general computer listening for music / movies / games etc too. Many years ago I originally had a pair of the Yamaha HS5s with 5 inch woofers and you’re right, they did lack bass response but they were still great mixing speakers. But for me I started doing more electronic music a few years ago so I wanted more bass and my friend had the HS8s and when I first heard them at his home studio they blew my socks off so I knew I had to upgrade. So yes, I greatly prefer the HS8 however they are definitely bigger, heavier, and more expensive which are all things to consider. Also the placement of the speakers and the acoustic treatment of the room really matters. If I am sitting normally in my office chair of course I can still hear some good bass, but when I’m doing my mixing, if I sit back a few more feet away from my desk, I can hear drastically MORE bass. So just a reminder to always move around the room to hear the differences in sound when trying new speakers. And I also utilize Audio Technica ath-m50x headphones to mix as well. I’m usually 50/50 between listening and mixing on speakers vs headphones in general. I hope this info helps and you have any other questions let me know!
Thank you! I didn't know Playnite, it's exactly what I needed! :)

Have you found a way to hook the UWP apps to steam? Looking forward to that video since Steam updated to Steamdeck UI. I subbed & turned on notifications
Best solution I've found is GlosSI - Global (systemwide) Steam Input. It launches a proxy window that the steam overlay hooks into. Works best in Borderless Fullscreen display mode.

Sorry to disappoint, maybe once I’m monetized I’ll switch up the wardrobe 🤣 thanks for watching erik!!! 🤓
A dummy hdmi dongle is a game changer for moonlight, can just plug it in and set windows to turn off all other screens. Also an all in on touchpad keyboard with a 2.4ghz wireless adapter plugged in to your PC can be a good way to just fully control your pc when streaming over moonlight
I’ve heard a lot of folks in the Moonlight GitHub forums / Discord recommend dummy plugs, I might have to check one out. That’s quick thinking on a combo keyboard! I’m always interested in how other folks are solving their problems with what works for them. Thanks for watching and commenting, it’s much appreciated.
There's an even better solution and its free ! its called virtual monitor by MikeTheTech , go check him out on youtube! i literally was about to buy a dummy hdmi but he saved me money lmao and time
@@dylanmacintosh no, use monitor profile switcher with a virtual desktop, its so much cleaner.
In REWASD do you set the combo/config for each specific game? The REWASD tutorial you linked wasn't very user friendly / easy to follow. Hope you can help direct me before I spend a few bucks on the software!
When trying to run moonlight from my phone and also my tablet I can’t use any controls. I can work Playnite just fine from my computer with a controller but on any other device no controls work. Anyone know how to fix this issue.
I have sunshine but when i run moonlight on my phone it doesn't show my pc
Hi! I'm looking foward on transforming my PC on a gaming console. I'm integrating Playnite with RetroArch, but for some reason PS1, PS2, Saturn and N64 games don't open through Playnite (only RetroArch). What is going wrong (other platforms are working fine)?
So will this use the PC (CPU and GPU) to do all the rendering and whatnot and then stream to whatever device you wish? I ask becasue I am thinking of getting series S 1TB to game in my living room (on occasion). IF the PC does all the heavy lifting then that is more of a reason to get a series S. If not -- then I will get a series X .. just cheap I guess :P
Great question, I would say yes it is technically possible to utilize Moonlight on an Xbox Series S. I also have a Xbox Series S in my living room, so of course I’ll give it a shot for you and let you know how it goes. The counterpoint to this is you can use any device that runs the Moonlight app, for instance Google TV with Chromecast are $30 so if you really just want the Moonlight capability on the cheap, you can go lower priced for sure. Since the PC is doing the heavy lifting you won’t notice much difference streaming on a $30 Google TV vs a $300 Xbox, but if you want the Xbox anyways of course go ahead, the Series S is great value and comes with a controller of course. I hope this helps!
I just loaded up Moonlight on my Series S, and my initial test was excellent- I was able to play Tetris Effect Connected on my PC and it honestly felt like I was playing on the Xbox itself, even though I knew I wasn’t. I hope this info helps you, and I will continue to test and perhaps make a new video on it 🫡
Hi so i have a couple of issues with this set up. Firstly, everytime i try to play playnite (or even if i play a game directly with sunshine by adding the exc, it only streams into my pc desktop. Secondly, my bluetooth xbox one controller works with the moonlight app, but when i stream into the pc, only the apple remote works and not the controller. Thirdly, I have a ultrra wide pc monitor, and i cant get moonlight to display my games in 4k, only my ultrawide reesolution. any help?
Hey dude, thanks for the great video. I have setup Playnite instead of this one with Sunshine and Moonlight. While I can access the games normally and use the touch screen of my phone to navigaate the fullscreen mode of playnite, the inputs stop working as soon as im in the game (using Ryujinx emulator btw). The same thing happened to me when connecting a controller as well... I am not sure why I am losing all input once the ryujinx game is launched. Could you please help? Am I missing something?
im seeing this now but no one says how to go full screen on xbox it keeps showing half size when i stream from my pc to xbox
Moonlight+Sunshine is useful for games that don’t demand too much. However, I’ve noticed it causes a drop of about 40 FPS when I stream Cyberpunk at 4K 120Hz. Without streaming, I get a stable 120 FPS, but once I start streaming, it falls to 80. This doesn’t happen when I stream via Steam Link. I tried messing around with their settings, but I couldn’t achieve better performance.

// EDIT: I found that what causes this issue is Hardware Accelerated GPU Scheduling (HAG), but disabling it makes it impossible to use DLSS3.
Wow, very interesting findings- thank you for posting that update to your comment. I wouldn’t be surprised if this could be fixed in a Sunshine or Moonlight update, or if it’s possibly some kind of limitation with Nvidia’s current architecture- either software or even hardware. But for now I might like to ask you how you prefer to work around it? Do you simply leave DLSS3 disabled? Or do you prefer to lower the resolution and stream at 2K? Disable HDR? Let us know. Another thing that helped me with weird game streaming glitches was to “Reset All Network Settings” on my Windows PC Host, so I’m curious if you have tried that as well. Thanks for watching, and commenting.
@@dylanmacintosh At the moment, I'm not too worried about this. When I was trying to configure them, I was already finishing the Cyberpunk DLC, so right now I'm playing other games that I don't need DLSS3 to achieve the desired frame rate (120). I think lowering the resolution might be a good way to work around this, but I use a TV as a monitor (LG C1) and can easily notice the difference after playing in 4K for too long. 😅 After editing this comment, I kept doing some more tests. What seems to be happening is that only the actual frames are transmitted to the client PC; the gains we get from frame generation is being ignored. Hopefully it will be fixed in the future, Moonlight and Sunshine are amazing. 🙏 It took some time for me to get everything perfect, but now I can say that I achieve the same image quality I was getting when playing on Windows, very hard to notice any compression.

How to make moonlight full screen cab you help with that
Now that Sunshine have released a new version with many improvements, you could start making videos comparing it to Nvidia's gamestream and Parsec. You'd sure get many many views!!
Great suggestion! Thanks for watching and I’m definitely interested in covering this space more!
how do you create moonlight game shortcuts for individual games from your list of gamestream titles, for example I have 4 gamestream titles on Moonlight available.
For example can I create a shortcut file for lets say ( FINAL FANTASY XIII-2) and when I launch the shortcut, Moonlight opens up and launches automatically my gamestream title which is in this example (FINAL FANTASY XIII-2).
Is this possible, and if yes how can you achieve this.
@LizardByteDev when i try to stream only rpcs3 or ppsspp my remote device freezes. It continues on the host but not on the client. Any suggestions?
My controller works fine on my tv and in moonlight but as soon as try using it on playnite it doesnt work. What do I do
Great question! Do you have anything else running on your computer? For instance any other game overlays such as the Windows Game Bar overlay or Steam overlay if you have steam installed? It might be best to turn those off, or in my case I had steam overlay on and wanted to keep it on, so I opened up my Desktop configuration and changed the mapping to be a normal controller figuration as if I were in a game (instead of at the desktop like the configuration would assume). I hope this helps, please let me know if you have any more questions!
Thanks for the fast response! How you open up your desktop configuration?

can i use windows and open a game that uses anticheat (we know they wont work on mac parallels etc) and play it as a stream on macbook?
Great question, if you are streaming the game with anticheat from a Windows host to a Mac client, then the game will be running on a Windows gaming PC, so there should be no problem with anticheat, the game should launch normally on the Windows gaming PC host, and sunshine should have no problem streaming your anticheat game over to your Mac Moonlight client. I see no problem, so might as well give it a whirl. Cheers 🥂

Is there something I am supposed to configure to get Playnite to launch in big picutre full screen mode when loading it from a Moonlight client?
Make sure in the Sunshine settings “Applications” section, that your Playnite app command is set to the PlayniteFullscreen.exe
idk why but i will get BIG FPCS drops when i use it
Can anyone help? I've tried to play on my android device but the gamepad overlay on the android seems unresponsive, any fixes?
So I have Moonlight, Sunshine, and Playnite all set up and working. I have Moonlight on my Google TV (Sony Bravia Tv with ethernet), and I have a wireless controller (call it 'Controller A') paired with my tv. The controller works to navigate within its menus and to navigate within Moonlight and launch Playnite on my host PC. However, once Playnite is active, my controller does nothing. This does not appear to be an issue with Playnite on its own though, because if I launch Playnite on its own on the PC and use another wireless controller (call it 'Controller B') which is paired to the PC, it works fine in Playnite. So why is it that Controller A does not work, whereas Controller B works fine? I'm kind of stuck at this point.
No worries! I think we’ve all experienced this issue at some point, because passing through controller inputs on a Windows 10 PC can be convoluted at times. Firstly I’d like to ask, are you using the Playnite “Fullscreen” exe? Just checking. If you are, is Steam also running on your PC? If so, simply exiting Steam might fix the issue. Also, check if the Xbox game bar or game mode is running, as any of these gaming “overlays” that could commonly be running on a gaming PC could be “stealing” your controller inputs before they get to Playnite. Finally, there are a few more things you could try- there are settings in Playnite that “focus” the window, or you could use a program like reWASD to automate things like window switching, etc. The final thing I might recommend is to actually leave Steam running (I know I just said to exit it, but hear me out) and under the Settings -> Controller -> Desktop Configuration, map all these buttons to be your actual gameplay controller mappings, rather than the default virtual mouse left and right click etc, since you won’t be needing the steam “desktop” control anyhow. Let me know if any of these work for you, or if you have more questions about any of these suggestions. And thanks for watching!
@@dylanmacintosh Yes, I am using the Fullscreen exe. I turned off steam and all overlays, except for xbox game bar, because it seems the option is unavailable in Windows 11 (only the option for using a controller's xbox button to open xbox game bar is exposed). I did not see a playnite setting regarding 'focus' either. As for steam, it seems to make no difference whether i leave it running or closed. However, I will note that if i use Controller B, I am able to configure steam's desktop controller stuff, but when only Controller A is connected, steam simply states that there is "No Controller Attached". I was to reiterate that playnite works fine with Controller B wirelessly connected directly to the PC.(both controllers are the same model and are interchangeable btw) So I do not think that playnite is at fault. It feels like Moonlight and/or Sunshine is not sending/receiving the controls
@@dylanmacintosh I should note that my controllers are Xbox One S controllers
It turns out that I needed ViGEmBus and/or X360 controller drivers. I tried each of them without success and them had success after rebooting. I will also note that for steam, you only need to disable Xbox Configuration Support. I actually found the focus option - that's just so that the Xbox button puts focus on Playnite. It seems to focus the window, but I appear to still need to click with my mouse to get the gamepad working again
That’s great troubleshooting, and interesting findings! Thank you for commenting in detail here so others who might have similar issue can see. It looks like you’re a few steps closer to having it sorted out on your system, so what’s left do you think? Just finding a way to get Moonlight to focus on the game once it launches, is that right?
Where do i need to connect my controler - to the tv or pc?
Great question- ideally, you would connect the controller to a dedicated streaming device, like an Apple TV, Google TV with Chromecast, etc. I have tried connecting a controller via bluetooth to a Samsung TV itself, however the TV was interpreting the controller as a TV remote, and not passing through the correct inputs. The controller basically only had d-pad working while connected directly to the Samsung TV. So, this is why I recommend a dedicated streamer box like an Apple TV or Google TV, since they both have the Moonlight app available readily on their stores, and they both support bluetooth connections for game controllers specifically.
How do i connect my pc to my tv using playnite?
I've been seeing a lot of conflicting info about Nvidia Streaming not being a thing anymore. What would be an alternative to this?
Great question! If Nvidia kills off GameStream for good, then you would need to use Sunshine as a replacement. I mostly went with Sunshine for this video for that exact reason: to get ahead of Nvidia killing off GameStream (which would normally just be enabled through the GeForce Experience app). So, to answer your question more directly- yes, the alternative to GameStream is Sunshine paired with Moonlight. Hope this helps!
@@dylanmacintosh Awesome, thanks for this input.
I've been trying to do some research into this kind of set up but it doesn't seem super common.
I'm planning on doing pretty much this exact setup sometime this year
You’re very welcome! Thank you for watching, by the way, and commenting. To your point, it is not a very common setup, and I outlined more of my other attempts at “couch gaming” in my previous game streaming video where I utilized the Steam Link app and Steam ROM Manager to achieve- it took a while for me to land on streaming as well, but I really think it holds a lot of promise. I’m currently working on a new video utilizing a different launcher and wow- it’s so easy even with multiple emulators! So, stay tuned, and again thank you for watching.
@@dylanmacintosh I'll keep an eye out for the new video. Thanks for letting me know :)
Naturally my Xbox series controller doesn’t work
sorry. so how do you stream it to your livingroom TV. i dont quite get it. please help out
Great question, do you have a streaming box? Something like Apple TV, or Google TV? If so, just download the Moonlight app on the streaming box. You’ll need to pair a Sunshine host over your local network, like your gaming PC in the same house for example. That’s the gist of it.
@@dylanmacintosh thanks for your reply. i have the newest LG smart TV. will that work? or do i have to get a streaming box? thanks in advance
Great question, the short answer is I would recommend a streaming box. I recommend the Chromecast with Google TV 4K for a budget device, or Apple TV 4K if you’re an Apple household and like that Apple ecosystem. The long answer is the LG webOS technically has a homebrew version of Moonlight that you could install with dev mode enabled on your TV with some effort, but past that I would question the ability of the TV to support Bluetooth controllers correctly for use with game streaming. Whereas for $40 on sale, you can have the Google Chromecast with Google TV 4K that I know works great with Moonlight and Bluetooth controllers correctly because I own one and use it all the time. The streaming boxes I mentioned are also an improvement over the other streaming apps built into the LG webOS, in my opinion- so I definitely recommend a dedicated streaming device like the ones I mentioned from Google or Apple over the built in apps all around. I hope this helps, let me know if you have any more questions.

That’s a great question, I don’t have a Nvidia Shield to test with but I think the better question to ask is whether it does or doesn’t does it matter? If 4K is that important to you, you could switch the moonlight settings to stream 4K instead of 1080, as long as your graphics card in your PC can keep up with running games in 4K. Are you concerned about network bandwidth or lag at 4K streaming? Or perhaps you’re wondering if you can stream 4K if you’re not using a 4K monitor connected to your PC? Let me know and we can work together to find the best solution for your game streaming experience!
I followed everything in the video but on my Moonlight all I get is a black screen. I can hear any audio playing from my computer but just can't see anything
Gotcha, that could be a few things- I found a fix online that sounds similar to your issue that says to add the games you’re having trouble streaming into your advanced graphics settings and mark that software for high performance mode. www.nvidia.com/en-us/geforce/forums/gamestream/19/217159/black-screensolved/
Is there a way 2 use moonlight while having the monitor off
That’s a great question! I’ve heard some people use monitor dummy plugs for this purpose, though I haven’t used one myself.
moons close, but what about the audio clipping heaps of people like myself have, is that something i just won't get around on 2.4ghz
Great question! While I have not experienced this audio clipping issue myself, I realize it can be a major pain while game streaming. If it is a known issue it’s possible it could be fixed in a future update. Thanks for watching!
You need a strong and stable wifi connection....streaming on my rog ally...tplink deco x75 pro solved all my stuttering problems using the wifi 6e dedicated just for main PC and rog ally...buttery smooth...i dont think it will run great on the 2.4 ghz band...hope it helps
@@arnoldperez4344 that is the issue, 2.4 is too slow and not all that many older devices can even see a 5g connection let alone actually connect to it, it's a pain. Energy i'd rather put into VR or something i might actually use more than one, cuz lets face it, gaming on a phone is dogshit.
Is there anything else I have to put into sunshine to get playnite to launch? When I try to launch playnite it just brings me to my desktop instead of launching it.
Great question, in your Sunshine webGUI, under the Applications tab, then under “Detached Commands”, do you have the path to your Playnite Fullscreen executable listed? If so, that should do the trick and it might just need a look over to see if it’s exactly correct, and if not, you’ll just need to add it there, click the Add button and make sure it saves by clicking off that webpage and then back on and seeing if it’s still there. Hope this helps!
It requires a strong and stable wifi connection wifi 6 or 6e ...solve
My lag and stutter problems with DECO X75 PRO...Its like playing on my main PC with 14600kf paired with RTX 3080ti...absulutely buttery smooth
What a crazy coincidence! I just got the Deco XE75 and like you say, buttery smooth while game streaming on moonlight 😎
Does anyone know of this will stream Horizon ZD to iOS using backbone?
Great question, if you’re running Horizon ZD on a Windows PC, and streaming to an iOS device with an iPhone compliant Backbone One attached, then yeah I don’t see why not!
I need help!! I did everything you showed in the video but my xbox game pass games doesnt show up on Playnite. whats the fix? thanks
Great question! In the Playnite (desktop version) menu if you select Library -> Configure Integrations and select Xbox, make sure you have at least “Connect Account”, and “Import installed games” checked. Once they are, make sure to click “Authenticate” and sign in with your Xbox account. Past that, there is a link that Playnite has provided at the bottom of that Xbox integration wizard that leads you here: github.com/JosefNemec/PlayniteExtensions/wiki/Xbox-Library-troubleshooting
Does Moonlight/Sunshine work the other way around? Like if I want to stream from Steam Deck to pc?
Great question, sunshine is available on their GitHub in a variety of installers, so if one of them works with SteamOS it just might fit your needs. Otherwise, since your already on Steam Deck and are looking to stream to a PC you might want to try Steam Link- it’s built right into Steam and any PC running Steam as well can connect to any other PC running Steam. I hope this helps!
can I stream PC to Laptop by Moonlight and Sunshine? How to do it?
You sure can. 😎 The first step is to install Sunshine on your PC. It’s just a Windows Installer from their GitHub. The second step is to install Moonlight on your laptop. Then connect them with the Moonlight PIN into your Sunshine WebGUI. Enjoy!
how do i stream this to my phone?
Hi Dylan,
first... thx for this great tutorial. My only Problem here is the Connection to my Controller :(
My PS5 Controller is always connectet to my Laptop with Steam and Sunshine in the Bedroom
My TV is Connectet with a AppleTV (Moonlight) in the Livingroom
The Connection is OK and it works.... BUT
When i move away from my Laptop and go to the livingroom to play, i no longer have a connection to the controller because we have a big thick wall between bedroom and livingroom.
Do you know what i can do about it
Sure, it sounds like you have your controller connected directly to the host, but what I think you want to do is to connect your controller to the client, which in your case sounds like it’s an AppleTV. So when you walk out to the living room, first pair your controller of choice to your AppleTV, then launch Moonlight on the Apple TV so that Moonlight can pass your controller input through to your host, which sounds like your laptop. Hope this helps! And thanks for watching!
@@dylanmacintosh thank you so much Dylan. I will test this option ❤️❤️
How do you access the steam overlay when using the Apple TV as a client?
Great question! The guide button on an Xbox controller is bound to the AppleTV menu, so instead I just hold the back button to open the lower third steam streaming menu, then select the “press virtual controller buttons” option and once the virtual guide button is selected I press A to activate it, then B a few times to leave the streaming menu to see the Steam Overlay since I don’t use the Steam Overlay too often. Alternatively if you need faster access to the Steam Overlay you could re-map the guide button to the share button or something like that in your Steam Controller Configuration. Hope this helps!
@@dylanmacintosh Thanks! Any way to do it using Moonlight rather than Steam Link that you know of?
@@jonathan_wood Sure, I might try using REWASD or similar remapping software to map the steam overlay keyboard shortcut of "Shift + Tab" to a button, or button chord on the controller. I would think basically anything other than the Guide button would work. Let me know if that helps!
So I got it all up and going but it’s not taking any of my controller inputs, anyone got any advice?
You’re definitely not alone, as passing through controller inputs can get tricky! The first thing to try would be to install the ViGEmBus drivers for controllers- the second thing I ask people to look at is to try fully exiting Steam, and/or Xbox Game Bar or Game Mode as any other program with a “gaming overlay” might be “stealing” your inputs before they can get to your game. Past that, I might try leaving Steam open, and then configuring the “steam desktop controller layout” to look like regular game controls rather than mouse emulation, as that worked well for me. Hope this helps! Let us know if you’re good to go, or if you’re still having an issue because other people with the same issue might read the comments and end up solving their issue too. And of course thanks for watching!!
thanks a lot man!!!
You’re very welcome!
Is there a way to connect without being on the same WIFI?
Short answer, yes! Long answer: the initial pairing of the Moonlight client device to your Sunshine host must be done on the same network. If you’ve installed Sunshine as a Windows Installer (default option from Sunshine downloads) then you are set up for remote access by default. Simply connect your Moonlight client from any other network at any point down the line, and as long as your host is available online, it should connect just fine. Something to note is some public networks such as hotels, schools etc limit streaming capabilities. But I’ve rarely run into that, just something to mention. I hope this helps!
@@dylanmacintosh I literally figured it just as you replied haha works much better than the Game pass streaming service, literally no input lag at all it's pretty crazy 😅
Much appreciated for your help! You've earned another sub 😁
@@linksgranny64 beautiful! Glad you got it going, it’s glorious once self-hosted game streaming all starts coming together.
How can I configure sunshine to start with windows?
Great question, if you installed Sunshine using the Windows installer, it will run as a service automatically starting when Windows starts. No other configuration is required!
@@dylanmacintosh thanks friend, the problem is a i uncheck the startup in the installer, the reinstall solved it
Great tutorial, now I just need to have my router not have 10% packet loss 😢
Have you tried turning it off and on again 🤔 thanks for watching Kurtis 🤣
How are the streaming quality of these things?
I have a good spec pc so i can run games in high quality with good fps.
Using moonlight/steamlink, would wireless gaming also provide these things?
That's a really great question! I didn't really go into the 'streaming quality' in the video because it is so dependent on a variety of factors relating to each person's individual setup. So, here goes- I would say in general the ideal connection would be to have both the host and client devices wired into the same network, like how I have my Gaming PC and Apple TV 4K both wired in- I rarely experience even a blip with this connection method. Of course, not all devices have ethernet ports on them, so being on the same local WiFi is the next best connection type, like how I have my Chromecast with Google TV wirelessly connected from my bedroom- it still rarely drops a frame but has slightly higher latency. Finally, connecting over the internet from someone else's WiFi definitely gets a little dodgier but is still playable- and lastly, playing over cellular while out and about on my iPhone causes major stutters and reconnections. So, it's really hard to say "wireless is good or bad" because there are so many more factors, like what kind of router you have (mine's WiFi 6), how many devices you might have on your network, whether someone in your house is streaming 4K movies and downloading a video game while you're trying to stream, etc. So, in the end it really just comes down to trying it out with your own setup and seeing what works for you and your setup and what doesn't work. I hope this helps but of course if you have any more questions let me know!
Can I use this with a new Nvidia shield pro I just bought? I want my kids to play pc games modded in the living room.
Great question! I don’t have an Nvidia Shield Pro myself to test with, but I believe as long as the moonlight app is available for it you can use it all the same. Hope this helps and thanks for watching!
Does it work for battlenet?
If I connect my Office pc towards my Living room tv, how do I connect a controller? Usually the controller is connected to the PC or a console but if theres just the TV how does that work?^^
Great question! You can connect Bluetooth controllers to all kinds of devices these days, smart TVs included. If your specific TV model doesn’t support Bluetooth controller connections and/or the Moonlight app, you can pickup a streaming stick like Google TV, Fire Stick, or Roku pretty cheap that will just plug in via HDMI to the TV so that it can become your “smarts” to host the controller connections and Moonlight app. For example I have a projector in my bedroom that doesn’t have any “smarts” built in, so I plugged a Google TV into its HDMI port and it works great for game streaming since it supports Bluetooth controller connections as well as the Moonlight app! Hope this helps and thanks for watching!
@@dylanmacintosh Google TV? Have you mean Google Chromecast? Is any lag difference between Google and Apple Tv in streaming game through Moonlight?
@@PinkaSSek Great question! The full name of the device I mentioned is the Chromecast with Google TV (4K) shown here amzn.to/3Z0utQY My Apple TV 4K is using ethernet while the Google TV is wireless, however I've not noticed any large amounts of lag on either device. Gameplay is smooth and enjoyable while streaming on both so far. Hope this helps!
@@dylanmacintoshI have my wireless xbox controller connected to my google tv with bluetooth and it works on the tv itself, even in moonlight. However, playnite does not respond to it at all. I have no idea what to do.
No worries, we’ve all been there. Passing through controller inputs between applications can be tricky on Windows 10, so there are a few things you can try. First I would suggest to install the ViGEm Xbox controller driver- second, close Steam if you have it running, and disable the Xbox game bar, windows game mode etc- any “game bars” that are open on your PC could be “stealing” the controller inputs. Third, I would suggest actually leaving Steam running if you have it, but reprogramming the “desktop configuration” under control settings to be actual game controls, instead of emulating mouse movement and mouse clicks. If you are still having an issue please comment back and we can get more specific. Thanks for commenting and thanks again for watching!!
It is said I could open sunshine in Xbox with a github project, but i coudn't, and I don't understand why. I installed the retail app, and wasn't given much directions. Someone knows about it?
It's laggy, i7 processor, gtx 1080i, and wired connection
Should we connect both computers with Zero tier or just the host device?
I’m not sure how you mean- once you have Sunshine running on the host PC, you can install the Moonlight client on whatever devices you choose by connecting them with the PIN code. Hope this helps!
Dylan pleease help, when I launch Playnite it's just a black screen. I changed the Quick command from "DesktopPlayer.exe" to "FullscreenPlayer.exe" :/
yea same here
I’m confused- can you do this on Xbox?
Great question- if you are asking if you can use the Moonlight UWP app on your Xbox to play games off of your Sunshine host PC from the comfort of your Xbox console, then the answer is yes! I do it all the time and it’s awesome. if you are asking if you can stream your Xbox console to another device like Xbox Remote Play, but with Moonlight, then the answer is no. I hope this helps!
Como faz o mouse funcionar?
Great question, Moonlight has built in mouse emulation. Depending on the client it can be different but the usual method to activate mouse emulation mode is to hold the Start button on your controller for 2 seconds. A message will pop up on screen saying mouse emulation mode is on. Once it is turned on, you can move your mouse with the thumb sticks and click the mouse with the face buttons, usually A for left click, B for right click. Touchscreen devices like a phone for instance can also use the touchscreen as a trackpad, with single finger tapping as a left click, and double finger taps as right clicks. I hope this helps!
what's the purpose of sunshine? isn't moonlight already a host?
Great question, Moonlight is a streaming client application that runs on Nvidia’s GameStream protocol, which would typically be hosted on a gaming PC equipped with an NVIDIA graphics card. It’s essentially a feature that you can turn on in the NVIDIA settings. However, the reason Sunshine exists (and was aptly named as the opposite of Moonlight) is that it can host the GameStream protocol on any graphics card, NVIDIA or AMD.
can you use dolphin emulators with this method?
Sure can, just select your Dolphin emulator installation path when you’re setting up your Playnite connections and emulators!
did not need sunshine just added playnight app into moonlight via shield settings
Yes! If you have an NVIDIA Shield this process is even easier! Makes me think about getting one… for science of course 😁
Can we use Lauchbox instead of playnite?
Sure can! The reason I went with Playnite for the video was to keep everything as free as possible. If you’re partial to launchbox you’re certainly welcome to use that program instead- the “big box mode” aka fullscreen mode is a premium feature that you’ll have to pay for their premium license to use. Hope this helps and thanks for watching!
Can I play Diablo 4 on TV?
Great question! The proprietary Blizzard Battle.net launcher definitely throws a wrench in things, but of course all things are possible with a little extra legwork- while I don’t own Diablo IV, someone on Reddit wrote some instructions that look like they should work to me www.reddit.com/r/Diablo/comments/11tx1qg/fyi_d4_works_through_steam_link/?
OK I searched everywhere is there a friendly soul out there that can help me out I’m trying to use my PS five controller it is connected to my iPhone but won’t work over moonlight/sunshine please help I really appreciate it🙏
Great question, I just tried this out and the Dualsense seemed to work fine on my iPhone with moonlight, but I did experience an issue with the game that is as testing itself, it seemed to loose the controller input at some point and wouldn’t come back until I closed the game and reopened it- is this the same issue you’re having or something different?
@@dylanmacintosh I’m getting the backbone tomorrow I hope that will work
Nice choice! If a different controller doesn’t help, it’s gotta either be a problem with moonlight, or the game you’re trying to play
hey dude why my localhost 47990 can't open
Great question, if Sunshine is currently installed running on your PC you can also find its icon in your System Tray, right click it and select “Open Sunshine” and it will open the webGUI for you. Hope this helps!
