    Super helpful video! Thank you~ 🙏 Got a question: If I connect to a hotel's wifi or other public wifi, would I need a VPN? I don't understand much about how all this works over non-local connections

    • @dylanmacintosh
      @dylanmacintosh 3 дня назад

      That’s a great question- no a VPN is not required. If you’ve installed Sunshine on your host PC, and you’ve paired your Moonlight client to that Sunshine Host PC at least once on the local (same) network, then you can connect that specific Moonlight client to that specific Sunshine host remotely over the internet at any time thereafter. This is configured by default by the Sunshine application at the time of installation. For Sunshine V0.22, end to end encryption is enabled by default for increased security while streaming over the internet. So, in short, it should “just work” as long as your PC hasn’t gone to sleep mode (or off for that matter) while you’re away and attempting to stream over the internet, since Moonlight can’t wake hosts over the internet, only on the local network. So, install Sunshine, pair your Moonlight client while you’re still at home, then leave your PC on/awake before you leave the house. Once connected to a different network, open the Moonlight app and connect. Moonlight will also tell you if the network is blocking streaming connections, as some networks like hotels choose to block those ports, but I haven’t run into any networks that block Moonlight so far and I’ve been to several hotels in different states and countries while streaming with Moonlight. I hope this helps, let me know if you have any more questions.

    What does your network setup look like to stream 1080p @ 120Hz?

    • @dylanmacintosh
      @dylanmacintosh 4 дня назад

      Great question, but it’s nothing too crazy- my gaming PC is wired into my wifi router, which is a TP Link Deco XE75 (non pro). It’s WiFi 6E, so I’m using the 6GHz band on my devices that support it, like the ROG Ally. But when I check the Moonlight analytics it says 1080p 120hz takes around 28Mbps, so it really doesn’t have much trouble on the network side, especially since my Gaming PC is wired in via Ethernet. It’s just my client devices like ROG Ally that have to worry about the WiFi Bandwidth. The real benefit to being on the 6GHz band more than just the speed (there’s more than enough even on 5GHz) is that it’s not bogged down by everything else on my network on the 2.4 or 5GHz bands. The only devices connected to the 6GHz band at any time are the devices I use for game streaming. That might change as I buy more devices that support Wi-Fi 6E or 7 as it becomes more popular in the future, but for now, that’s just the way the cards fall, on my network at least. I hope this helps, but please let me know if you’re having any more questions. Cheers!

    I genuinely hate the fact that they discontinued the only cheap way to get into VR right now just to sell their crappy $500 headset....the quest 3 isnt worth the very minor to decent improvements

    • @dylanmacintosh
      @dylanmacintosh 4 дня назад

      The Quest 2 is currently out of stock, but it’s not labeled as discontinued officially yet… I’m just as curious as anyone why it’s been out of stock so long. Most likely an announcement for “Quest 3S” is coming next month (Meta likes October, historically) and they are clearing the inventory of the Quest 2 to make room, so to speak. At any rate I wouldn’t necessarily call the Quest 3 a bad device, but the Quest 2 was definitely better “bang for the buck” while it was being sold new for $200 US before going out of stock. In the meantime though, there are lots of Quest 2’s on the used market for even less, so still worth a look for VR on a budget. Otherwise holdout for news on Quest 3S. I hope this helps!

    A dummy hdmi dongle is a game changer for moonlight, can just plug it in and set windows to turn off all other screens. Also an all in on touchpad keyboard with a 2.4ghz wireless adapter plugged in to your PC can be a good way to just fully control your pc when streaming over moonlight

I'm thinking for if I'm on my desktop playing something on steam, can the Mrs. then also play something hosted on my machine. Assuming you have the hardware to run both of course. 2 - Has anyone set this up for access outside of your network? Not really "needed" but would be pretty sweet.

    I've been slowly working on all this. I've got it working, but my biggest issue so far has been getting the controller to automatically work. for instance if I"m using a controller bluetooth connected to my apple tv, then I later play on my pc with a hard wired controller, that controller won't work immediately. I have to go to the host and use the keyboard to change the controller, many times I have to re-pair the controller as well. This also happens if I'm playing on my tv streaming to the apple tv, but I connect my controller directly to my pc bluetooth (less lag). If the controller starts to run low on battery and I plug it in, bigbox no longer works with it (in my experience) and I again have to use the keyboard to navigate around and change the controller.

    • @dylanmacintosh
      @dylanmacintosh 19 дней назад

      Hmmm that’s a tricky one, it sounds like an issue with whatever games / emulators you’re using doesn’t like to switch inputs. Is there a specific emulator you’re noticing this behavior on? For me, it was Ryujinx that had the most trouble with switching controllers because the input has to be bound in the Ryujinx settings before it can accept input for “player 1” for instance. Whereas any of my Retroarch emulators were automatic with Player 1 input.

    • @everyhandleistaken2007
      @everyhandleistaken2007 19 дней назад

      @@dylanmacintosh Thanks for the reply! My issue is actually with bigbox itself. In the most common instance, I'll start it up streaming to my apple TV, with my PS5 controller bluetooth'd to my host PC, and my ps5 controller just won't navigate bigbox. So I'll go to the PC, disconnect the controller manually, and re-add it, then restart bigbox (all while still streaming), and it works. Although now that I type all this, I'm wondering if its not trying to pass a non-existent controller in through the apple tv as I had that setting on at first before deciding to connect the controller to the PC instead.

    • @dylanmacintosh
      @dylanmacintosh 19 дней назад

      I think you might be onto something. The moonlight stream is trying to provide a virtual controller input, and it might end up passing your locally connected controller to player 2, if that makes sense. Just depends on how the game or emulator processes multiple controller inputs. For example, some PC games I’m playing have both controller and keyboard mouse input active for player 1 at the same time, so I can switch between them at any time and keep playing. Thats more common with single player PC games. But consoles usually map each controller to a separate “player” etc. I hope this helps!

    Vouching for this method, one of your previous videos inspired my setup! After lots of configuring with emulators and streaming, using an Apple TV with Moonlight and Bigbox is really the best for playing anything in my living room. I have my PS5 controller connected to my host pc instead of the Apple TV to save milliseconds of input lag, but they both work. Also I had to disable variable fresh rate on my TV/streaming display to have the most seamless experience with the least input lag. Eventually I'll get one of those iPhone controllers or maybe hack my Switch to play on the go...

It's free to give it a try so I have no idea why people get upset about it. And once you try it out, you quickly realize it's pretty awesome, especially once you get multiple devices in the mix. If you only have a few games that you want to add to Steam you can certainly just add them to Steam as non-Steam games but if you have dozens or hundreds, maybe even thousands of ROM files that gets old real fast lol 😅 So, Steam ROM Manager is to help with that.

    Xbox Controller all day!! And that’s before I knew about subscription!! No way am I paying for something I can do free with an Xbox controller which is wayyy better anyway. This backbone is for someone who is constantly traveling, that’s the only way I see this being helpful, all in one, you can hold it in your hand. Title should be $10 vs $100, because 90% of phone gamers have Xbox/PS5 controllers laying around. I probably have about 5 of each if I look in all closets. As for preference, it’s pretty easy. I’d rather have a stand alone controller then something connected to phone. The switch is the only handheld that’s comfortable with controller on sides. Also, why backbone has not figured a way to make the joycons slide together when not in use, so you can carry in pocket makes no sense! I think I’m going to have to invent that, it will probably sell very well. Side note. Using Xbox controller with Delta Emulator on iPad is the best thing Apple ever did!!

    • @dylanmacintosh
      @dylanmacintosh 21 день назад

      Xbox controller all the way. I briefly thought about getting the BackBone version 2 since it supposedly works with phone cases on, but that still doesn’t solve the glaring difference in using the full size joysticks, triggers, and clicky dpad on the Xbox controller. Pair that with the fact that you can use the xbox controller on more devices than just your phone makes it the clear winner yet again. And like you say, there’s a lot of people out here who already have the Xbox controller anyways, though I couldn’t assume that for the video, but yeah I only had to pay $10 “extra” for the phone clamp since I already had multiple Xbox controllers lying around.

If you only have one speaker system and you don’t care about lossless then it’s easy to setup, but if you absolutely need lossless you might need to jump through some other hoops to make sure you’re getting the full lossless signal. Great question, Moonlight has built in mouse emulation. Depending on the client it can be different but the usual method to activate mouse emulation mode is to hold the Start button on your controller for 2 seconds. A message will pop up on screen saying mouse emulation mode is on. Once it is turned on, you can move your mouse with the thumb sticks and click the mouse with the face buttons, usually A for left click, B for right click. Touchscreen devices like a phone for instance can also use the touchscreen as a trackpad, with single finger tapping as a left click, and double finger taps as right clicks. I hope this helps!

    Hi! Just to make sure I really understand, you need to have a gaming PC and connect it to your Apple TV 4K in order to use steam on the Apple TV? I don’t own a PC or a console and I’m trying to find a way to combine the game accessibility of PC and the comfort of leaving my office and play in my living room with a PS5 controller. Also, is there a way to you play multiplayer locally with the apple tv 4k? Great video thank you!

      The Steam games are running on a Gaming PC in my office, and just the video feed is streaming to the Apple TV in my living room, and the gamepad input from the Apple TV is streamed back to the Gaming PC that’s running the game, and so on. So, this is just a more convenient way of playing your Gaming PC in other rooms, but you’d have to have a Gaming PC first off. If all you have is an Apple TV (and you don’t currently have any interest in getting a Gaming PC) then I suppose you’d be looking at services that can run on Apple TV such as Apple’s own Apple Arcade subscription. Currently, there are no cloud gaming apps available for Apple TV like Xbox Cloud Gaming or GeForce Now, because of the way Apple runs its App Store it doesn’t allow “other stores” on its store. But those App Store rules have changed recently due to an EU ruling, and has led to the introduction of emulators for iOS so it could be possible in the future that Apple might bring apps like Xbox and GeForce to Apple TV, but that’s why you haven’t seen them thus far. Local multiplayer on the Apple TV just comes down to what the Apple TV game’s developer supports. Some games are only single player while others are single player with online multiplayer, and very few these days are local multiplayer (couch co-op) but the ATV device itself supports 4 simultaneous Bluetooth controller connections. So if the game supports 4 players local multiplayer, you are in luck. I hope this helps, if you have any more questions let me know.

    Network bandwidth is typically delineated in bits-per-second (bps), not bytes-per-second. ;> That being said, good practical tests under real-world conditions. Thanks for taking the time & effort to create this mini-documentary. Rokid Max 1200p/120Hz/16:10 AR glasses work very well for both streamed & local games. Finally, there’s a lot you can do to play games with surprising fidelity & performance on the current crop of 7840U- & 8840U-based handhelds, & upscaled to the full device resolution. You might want to take the time to tinker with FSR 3 & FMF on your Ally, & compare this experience with streaming.

      Great question, it appears the Meta Quest 2 is out of stock on Meta’s own store site. So while it may be in stock at other stores, we might not see the sale price come back to match Meta until the Meta store itself can restock. So, I would wait until then. Or, check out the used market if you can’t wait. Thanks for watching and commenting.

    I was planning on buying a sim cockpit, but then I stumbled upon a post on Facebook Marketplace where someone was giving away a brand new dentist's chair for free. Naturally, my gaming brain went into overdrive, and I immediately contacted the person. Next thing I knew, I had the chair, fully electric and controlled by a pedal-joystick setup on the back. I decided to modify it, installing a cheap Arduino controller with Wi-Fi. Now, I can control the chair from my phone and even through Google Assistant. The result? A one-of-a-kind sim rig that's perfect for everything from F1 to GT and even space simulator games. Plus, it looks incredible! and futuristic!

      Hmmm for F1 23 VR I usually connect via my link cable, so it opens to Oculus Home (maybe it’s called Meta Link app now) but it’s the white void type of place. Then I launch Steam VR from there, and then launch F1 23 from the Steam Games panel and it prompts to open regular or VR mode. I just check the box to remember my choice and always open in VR mode because VR is the only way I play F1 now that I’ve got it going.

      Yes, actually 2D video quality like movies and TV is one of the things I was most impressed with on Quest 2. It’s pretty awesome to just sit in your own movie theater and watch whatever you want on a giant screen. You can also easily add headphones with the 3.5mm jack for great sound too.

    Right after I watched your video, I went to the used electronics shop and bought an Airport Express for £28. The cheapest Airplay 2 adapter on Amazon is Wiim mini, which costs £89. So I saved £61. I installed the Airport Express, and it works pretty well. Thanks for this great advice.

    I just noticed that if you first try to set it up wirelessly, you can’t do it in the airport utility app, but it shows a setup prompt in the WiFi settings of your iPad. HOWEVER, the setup in the WiFi settings of the iPad doesn’t have an option to just "join a network" which is what we want. So I recommend to connect the airport to your router via Ethernet cable (like in the video) and then it should show up in the airport utility app and then you can select "join existing network " and set it up to only be an AirPlay adapter.
