My favorite part of this review is how after complaining about how it's too dark to see in caves, he opens his inventory and has a flashlight in it

Well when the games few gripes were with how dark it was you have to point it out.
He lights up his axe during the day fighting enemies but didn't think to do it in a dark cave or look for other light sources

The only light source that actually changes the light emitted around you is the flashlight. Which is only found in caves and had limited battery. The upgraded stick and fire upgrades for your weapons emit the same radius of light as the starter lighter does.
The bic lighter isn't supposed to be used as a primary source of light.

And I'm thinking he wanted to state that having no Gamma adjustment settings ruins the experience, since it gets unrealistically dark, presumably for immersion, but redundant.
Edit after 2 years: I dont hold the same opinion. And it's getting exceedingly annoying that people take their precious time to respond to my comment 2 whole years later. Just move on.

The game has loads of filters that adjusts gamma, lighting and contrast.
Such a good game. Games that start off in early access and actually follow through until release should be rewarded. The Forest and Subnautica are two great examples of how early access games can actually be awesome if the devs are passionate about their game.
It feels so satisfying watching a game you like overs the years finally finish. Been 2 years since I last played this so i cant wait to boot it up again
game took longer to finish than skyrim and all its mods combined
Forest had less people to work on it. The forest is made by a small team whilst skyrim was made by several hundred people. The games are completely different in size, scope and mechanics so the comparison was pointless

They are too arrogant to put the score up because of their mistakes in the review.
Not to mention you can changed the settings and use the lens that makes it rather easy to see in the night. The review was a little harsh on that part I thought.
Funny thing is that in the video he a flashlight in his inventory...
It really is a scary game thou, I find it hard to do cave diving alone, but co op make it super easy.

The reviewer played the game for 5 minutes or what ? There is many sources of light and you can adjust lightening to better see in the caves !

Not only are torches super easy to maintain once you find the flashlight it can be taped to most any weapon. Feel like the reviewer might have missed that very major detail, lol.

Torches, flashlights, re-breather light, flares, changing the visuals-theres so many ways to make it brighter. Don't review a game unless you actually know whats in it.

To be honest, the coolest thing about this game is the amazing a.i. I love how a cannibal could stalk you, find your base and tell his friends to attack, that sort of a.i keeps me always on my toes and I love the thrill I get especially when hearing the monstrous noises of an armsy or a vaginia

If you hit a cannibal and leave them blood stained and just run away, you’ll see the same cannibal hours or maybe even days later

This is hard to watch a man complain about not seeing in the cave when there's around 30 options to create light or literally wrap any weapon in cloth and light it on fire.
You do know for in caves when it is dark you can combine a rag with a stick and light it as a torch?
I got this game years ago for $5 when it was announced in its very first alpha stage. Haven't played it in a LONG time because the updates were far and few between. He spoke very highly of it so they must have really jumped on the development and made it a full game. Good to know. I'll have to fire it back up and give it a shot again
Updates came usually in 2-4 weeks.
There's been major updates all the time you should see the update/change logs they are always crazy long.
Although one must admit, the replayability isn't pretty high unless you make it a survival sandbox with friends. So playing it for extra content in each update would've been quite tedious.

Guess i like tedious since i've been playing Forest 3 years now and got over 500 hours played. All solo. But yeah, if you don't like building and slaughtering cannibals, it might get tedious pretty fast.
Played it with a friend and it was a haunting and super fun experience.
At least they're smarter than the Los Santos cops.

Been playing this game ever since it first came out on steam and have always enjoyed it. Devs were pretty good with the updates and patches and I really enjoyed just surviving, building camps and exploring. Well worth a play if you like the survival genre.
Plenty of other light sources for exploring caves. Gotta earn your way into exploring these caves, not just start with your starter lighter.

There's actually a difference when your sanity goes down.

There is LITERALLY a *Torchlight* in the inventory (on the left) after he says the Lighter is the only source. What?
This is such a fun game, from early access till now. Multiplayer is awesome and the AI is so... human actually. Great to see 4 friends accomplishing so much and working so hard for this experience. Defenitely worth the $10 I think it is?

The forest got something better than Gamma setting, it has a filter setting that works 10 times better
honestly the forest NEEDS to be played with friends
I find the experience alone a lot more terrifying and immersive, since all you have between you and the horrors laden within the depths of the forest is yourself, so the fight for survival is a lot more urgent.

I absolutely love this game. The lighting does bother me a bit even with the flashlight and the other things we were able to combine but all in all I’m so hooked into it. I can’t wait for the 2nd one to come out
The AI in this Game is amazing. Did you know, you could technically remain hidden almost the entire game as long as you don’t build or get seen by enemies

I think the darkness they added is great, too often people use gamma. Gotta think they want to make it very realistic, making it extra dark helps that alot

Cons:Flashlight is not permanently in your hand, you have to retrieve it from your inventory to use it.
I just bought the game on PS Store, and so far I'm enjoying this game, really scary specially at start when you don't have a safe camp yet and the cannibal freaks is stalking you.
That was a pretty solid rating. I have devoted well over a hundred hours into the game and can correct you on one thing. You can alter the lighting in the settings to a numerous amount of diff. types. There is one in particular (Can't think of what it's called) that hardly changes the lighting in the daytime but really helps you see in the night especially in the tunnels. So I would have to disregard your comment on that issue since, it can be resolve easily. Other than that awesome review!!
It might not have a gamma slider, but you can adjust the coloration in the settings, some of those help with the darkness.
He could have also crafted torches or flashlights.

1:54 yes it does. I have it adjusted that I can mostly see all of the gave with no cheats, just at some points I need a lighter or some other source of light but for the most Ive got it so I can see pretty well in a cave as part of the game settings.
Do enemies build and rebuild? do they re-populate if you massacre the whole camp? does this game have a re-play value to it after completion?
A good survival game? Man 2018 might really just beat 2017 as far as games this year, even though the game's been in early access for a while.

2018 will not beat 2017 in any way what so ever. Breath of the Wild and Odyssey were both amazing games that came out last year, and stand unmatched

About the darkness you can change your lighting settings to see in the dark easily

Bruh its way scarier when they don’t attack you but run up to you and then stare you down
Since I played multiplayer online quite a bit, by the time my friends and I had had our fill of the games exploration and survival aspects and we're fully geared out to head for the final part of the story we basically had torches set up ever couple of feet in all the caves...suffice to say lighting in the caves was not an issue :)
About the light. You can use flashback or a stick with cloth on it for light.
The lighter isn't your only light source at all, you can use a flashlight which can be attached to weapons, flares or set up torches within the caves.
This game is both zen and terrifying. Love it.

About the cave part the criticism of light can be countered by using a torch made with a stick and cloth or cloth on an axe or you could use flares which are very common in camps

i have at least 100 hours in this game. this review is pretty spot on. other then the darkness. you have other sources of light but this game is amazing. perfect survival horror game with building
This game was great, I played it with one friend mostly and we finished both endings in about 12 hours 😂 was super fun though

I'm fairly certain that losing sanity has a couple more effects other than the ability to craft effigies. For example I was playing with my brother and I lost nearly half my sanity when he was at 97%, and in my game I would constantly hear screams that he didn't when we were right next to each other and once saw someone running around who vanished into thin air, so I think you suffer from hallucinations as well.

Glad to see this game didn't just end as an early access game that Let's Players played at some point but everybody forgot about. It seems like it actually ended up being a pretty impressive game.
Got the game with 7 more titles in this steam summer sale. Haven't played any of the other 7 titles. This game is amazing, also you can make torches and set almost every weapon on fire, there's also flashlights and flares, this game requires time, I'm almost 40 days stuck in the island with only 3 caves explored.

I wonder if this guy even beat the game. He didn’t even mention the story at all. P.S you can make better and brighter torches and find a flashlight. Don’t tell me that you played through the whole game using that lighter .

Fortune Finder they added an alternate ending. The ending has been the same for months. He could mention how the story is like a egg hunt, or how long it took to beat the game. Usually reviews say that it took them x amount of hours to beat a game

How could you say more about the story without spoiling it?
The game is beatable in about 2 hours. (if you know what you're doing and don't get lost.)

I can't tell by this if the AI are incredibly clever, or the devs just made 3 or 4 AI settings and it looks really clever when randomised between groups of AI lol. But i'll find out next week when the free VR updatearrives
It's not super intelligent AI, but best i've seen in any survival game. Or in that matter many AAA games.

Caves are dark.......craft a torch out of a few basic materials. There are flares and battery op flashlights to find as well.
Plenty of ways to make better light inside caves: add cloth to your axe or stick and make a torch, find a flashlight and batteries, find flares.
So it's basically "Don't Starve" with more steps.

You can find a battery power powered torch which is a great light source.
Wrap your weapons in cloth and light them or find the torch for much better light sources, there is also adjustments to make it bright, blockbuster being the best setting
