That's oversimplifying. There's also the reveal to Raoul that the Phantom is the father of his boy and of course the bet which is kind of the main plot point of Love Never Dies. So while there is certainly potential wasted in this song, it at least moves the plot along.

    • @naastyaaaaaaaaa

0:35 Let's take a moment to appreciate the camera angle and lighting here. Normally the mask and the Phantom are kind of silly, but in this shot? He looks scary as hell! It really helps that the actor has deep set eyes that turn his facial features into shadow in this light.

    LYRICS!
    RAOUL:
Miss Giry! He's not Mephistopheles, you know. When it comes down to it, he's just another circus freak.
    I'm not afraid of him.
    ..No, it can't be...
    THE PHANTOM:
Not afraid of me, you say?
    RAOUL:
Stay back or I'll kill you, I promise you!
    THE PHANTOM:
Insolent boy! You think you own more of her soul than I do?
    RAOUL:
She is my wife. Your music may speak to her, but her heart will always follow me.
    THE PHANTOM:
    You think so?
    You really think so?
    Follow you..
    With all your... charms?
    ...
Look at you, deep in dept
    Stinking drunk, pitiful!
Shall we two make a bet?
    Devil take the hindmost.
    RAOUL:
Look at you, foul as sin
    Hideous, horrible
Call the stakes, deal me in
    Devil take the hindmost.
    THE PHANTOM/(RAOUL):
    Our Christine shall choose tonight
    (Let her choose)
    Is she yours or mine?
    (Draw the line)
If she sings you lose tonight
    (I won't lose)
    THE PHANTOM:
    You leave from here
    RAOUL:
    Fine!
    THE PHANTOM:
    Disappear
    RAOUL:
    FINE!
    And if she won't?
    if I win?
    THE PHANTOM:
    All your debts wiped away..
    RAOUL:
    Very well, let's begin
    BOTH:
    Devil take the hindmost!
    THE PHANTOM/(RAOUL):
(You think you have the odds)
    Our old game
    (You think you're in control)
    It's been changed
(You think you've fixed the dice)
    Every throw
    (Well I will gladly roll)
    Riskier
    (I'll bet against the house)
    All the rules
    (I'll even double down)
    Rearranged
    Fate has redesigned most.
    (Fortune's on my side
    I won her long ago!)
    Cut the deck
(I won her from you then)
    Let us play
    (I wager even now)
    You and I
    (I'll win her back again)
    Once again
    In the end
(And when the game is done)
    Either way
    BOTH:
    Devil take the hindmost!
Now Christine shall choose at last
    Is she yours or mine?
    RAOUL:
    We've a son, our bond's secure..
    THE PHANTOM:
    Are you sure?
    RAOUL:
    What?
    THE PHANTOM:
    Are you so sure?
    RAOUL:
    ..What do you mean?..
    THE PHANTOM:
Such a child, strange to see
    Talented, musical
Is he more you or me?
Which one do you find most?
    RAOUL:
    You lie!
    THE PHANTOM/(RAOUL):
    Yet you boubt
    (No woman could)
    Doubt your wife
    (Or ever would)
    Doubt your son
    (Love such a man)
    Everything
    (You're insane!)
So now we (I) play for your (my) life!
    BOTH:
    Devil take the hindmost!
    THE PHANTOM/(RAOUL):
    Deal the cards
    (I call your bluff)
    Let them fall
    (The game is on)
    Choose your hand
    (And we will see)
    Try your best
    (Who wins out)
    He who wins
    (Once and for all)
    BOTH:
    Wins it aaaaaall!
    Devil take the hindmost!
    THE PHANTOM:
    She walks, you leave together.
    Pockets full, debts paid.
    She sings...
    You leave alone.
    Devil take the hindmost..
    RAOUL:
Dear God. What have I done? I could lose her forever. My Christine!..
    ...
PS: I never liked Raoul, but damn this song is amazing..
PPS: Ooh, remember writing the lyrics to the audio version of this.. Aww..)
PPPS: I couldn't find perfectly right lyrics anywhere, so I changed some stuff. Hope everything here is correct.))

Right after Raoul saw him but before he said "no, it can't be" Ramin gave a cheeky "hi" to Raoul that cracked me up. Ramin's Phantom is very flavourful that way. Over all, I think the whole scene of Devil Take The Hindmost is kinda funny. The bar tender thing throws you for a loop, and yet, it's somehow believable. When they both have each other by the shirts, it feels like Eric is speaking at that calm pace because he knows he’s in control. @@sierrawatson8314 On one hand I feel a bit sorry for Raoul in the sense that he knew deep down that he never fully had Christine’s heart and he had to have been suspicions about Gustave being his child, which of course he’d never admit to Erik.
But on the other hand his acting like a royal jerk to her all the time, drinking and gambling their money away and giving Gustave the cold shoulder…was all his own doing, and it just opened the door for Erik to swoop in and seduce Christine right back into his arms.
I really don’t think Christine would have left Raoul for Erik even though her heart would have still badly wanted to…IF Raoul hadn’t shot himself in the foot by depriving her of love for ten years.
Christine is a very self sacrificing person and I think she would have given up her hearts desire (Erik) and left with Raoul to keep her family intact IF he’d still been loving toward her…and Erik knew that, hence why finding out Gustave was his child was so essential to spurring him on to fight to get her back, as he knew she didn’t have much left tying her to Raoul…it was just a matter of getting her to give into her hearts desire.
Erik knew how to play his cards right, you have to give him that…and Raoul walked right into his trap.

“Shall we two, make a bet?”
Raoul was quick to jump on it, it made me upset that once he mentions Christine,
“If she sings, you lose tonight. You leave from here disappear.”
    He was quick to ask:
“Fine, but if she won’t IF I win?”
Just the mention of his debts wiped away he didn’t even care about what SHE wanted. And you think he would learn from his mistakes in The Phantom of the Opera movie.
    As the song goes:
“Say goodbye. As we dance with the devil tonight. Don’t you dare look at him in the eyes...”
Raoul has fallen so low, Here’s the difference between Eric and Raoul after this song, no matter what Christine would have chosen Eric would still love her. Raoul just wanted to win. And the fact that Christine slept with him and now their son maybe Eric’s made he realize how he had lost more than he bet on. And that is something he couldn’t take losing.

Raoul's "You're insane" just makes me lose it for some reason. Every other lyric in the song is pretty clever and witty and then he just bursts out with yOuRe iNsAne

Lets all agree on something: this was a much needed epilogue.
Songs are great and even bring back some nostalgic flashbacks to the first one

Miss Giry! He's not Mephistopheles you know. When it comes down to it he's just another circus freak
      I'm not afraid of him.
      No, it can't be
Not afraid of me, you say?
Stay back or I'll kill you, I promise you!
Insolent boy! You think you own more of her soul than I do?
She is my wife. Your music may speak to her, but her heart will always follow me.
You think so? You really think so? Follow you, with all your... charms?
Look at you, deep in debt
      Stinking drunk, pitiful
Shall we two make a bet?
      Devil take the hindmost
Look at you, foul as sin
      Hideous, horrible
Call the stakes, deal me in
      Devil take the hindmost
Our Christine shall choose tonight ( Let her choose )
Is she yours or mine? ( Draw the line )
If she sings you lose tonight ( I won't lose )
      You leave from here
      Fine!
      Disappear
      Fine! And if she won't?
      If I win?
      All your debts wiped away
      Very well, let's begin
      Devil take the hindmost
Our old game ( You think you have the odds )
It's been changed ( You think you're in control )
Every throw ( You think you've fixed the dice )
Riskier ( Well, I will gladly roll )
All the rules ( I'll bet against the house )
      Rearranged ( I'll even double down )
Fate has redesigned most ( Fortune's on my side )
Cut the deck ( I won her long ago )
Let us play ( I won her from you then )
      You and I ( I wager even now )
Once again ( I'll win her back again )
In the end ( And when the game is done! )
      Either way!
      Devil take the hindmost!
Now Christine shall choose at last
      Is she yours or mine?
      We've a son, our bond's secure
      Are you sure?
      What?
      Are you so sure?
      What do you mean?
Such a child, strange to see
      Talented, musical
Is he more you or me?
Which one do you find most?
      You lie!
Yet you doubt ( No women could )
Doubt your wife ( Or ever would )
Doubt your son ( Love such a man )
Everything ( You′re insane )
Now we play ( So now I play )
For your life ( For my life )
Devil take the hindmost
Deal the cards! ( I call your bluff )
Let them fall ( The game is on )
Choose your hand ( And we will see )
Try your best ( Who wins out )
He who wins ( Once and for all )
      Wins it all
      Devil take the hindmost!
      She walks, you leave together
      Pockets full, debts paid
      She sings, you leave alone
      Devil take the hindmost
Dear god, what have I done?
I could lose her forever
My Christine!

One of my favorite scenes. To put a comedy look to this. Imagine 2 strutting roosters fighting over a hen. Ok. I'm overthinking. Sorry.. But I really love Phantom and Love never dies. Good stuff.
