  • You can't use Army Painter Speedpaints ( amzn.to/3ZAsjIp) to paint flat surfaces like a Warhammer 40,000 Space Marines armour, can you? Today, Jon tests this common opinion to see if it can be done!

I needed this. Looking to get back into the hobby and have a bunch of first born Ultras i never got too deep into converting to a homebrew scheme that i want to "reblue"

Thanks for this, It provided some good tips to watch out for, although I think the marine looked trashed in the end, that was not your fault but the terrible speed paints. I would love to see a new version using the newer speed paint 2.0.

Ap speed paint is amazing through airbrushes

So I have heard! I have not got round to testing it through an airbrush yet for some reason. But will add it to the list 👍

Dumb question alert...what did you thin it with? The reason I ask is that AP have a special medium for thinning the Speedpaints (included in the big set), and I was wondering, if you can thin them with water and get a quality result, what's the point of it? Also, I liked the effect of the Crusader Skin over the paler flesh colour. I see they have produced metallics in the range now as well.

That is an interesting question. On this one I just used water to thin it! Being honest, I dont know the technical chemistry of the AP Speedpaint thinners yet, so I cannot comment on that product. But yes, the Crusader skin pleasantly surprised me as well

Supposed to be best to use the proper medium if you want to not reduce the contrast nature of the paint (avoiding the highs and attraction to crevices). Think it used to be that thinning with water made the old recipe reactivate more easily. So, bit of water probably fine but might have some side-effects that you might or might not want. Figure looks pretty good though!

Yeah it was reactivating neat with no thinning which was interesting. According to the instructions, the medium is to essentially turn any "Army Painter" paint into a speedpaint, so I am not sure yet how that would affect the flow (and that patchyness maybe). But yes, interesting stuff!

@@mdgunnuk That's interesting. I'd try that out to see if water -thinned paint does reactivate more readily, but I've disposed of my set now as I couldn't get on with them, one of the issues being that I tend to brush varnish.

I can only recommend to use an airbrush when doing this kind of basing with AP Speedpaint. And as much as i enjoy your channel - that drybrush was terrible :)

Thanks. It's a work in progress 😀. But yes, I have come to the same conclusion about the airbrush when using these paints

The mould line on the leg would bug me more than anything else 😐

Indeed, I hope more people see this video as two thinned coats is what I settled on for my Thousand Sons as well(in my case two coats of 2:1 Pallid Bone:Speedpaint Medium over an AP Skeleton Bone Primer). 🦴
