I am painting minis for the last 25 years. I ordered the mega set and should reach me on monday. A whole blank Deamon Army for Kings of War is waitíng on my desk for it to soak it up. Can't wait to see what I can do with that.
These speed paints are great. They came out during a period when I wasn't actively modelling, so I didn't know about them. When I tried them for the first time, I was really, really surprised at the result I got. Didn't take much extra effort to get my mini looking good, and it instilled confidence in me to try painting more figures, and figures with more and more details.
The fact that you can remove speed paints with a damp brush up to almost 6 hours later? That’s actually pretty cool. I would Use them like watercolors or gouache and go darker than I need and then remove some off the highest points or reactivates it with lighter colors for easy blending🤔 looks very interesting to me. 👍🏼
Are we sure that is the finished product? How did the marine suddenly get a winged design on the gun, and get a scope in the before and after? at the 22:00 mark?

I don't think painting channels on youtube realise that us "poor" people CAN afford an airbrush AND the time to learn how to use one (hell if we have the money to buy GW miniatures we could buy a house) what stops us is space and an area for airflow.

I'm glad you made this video ! I was really excited for speed paints , but after using them , I really wasn't happy with their finish mainly because of how ugly my zenithal was looking underneath. Really gotta put the work in on the back end to make these look great !
Interesting that you mention to NOT load up your brush; some other Speedpaint videos recommended loading up the brushes to let gravity draw the paint down, especially on Space Marine shoulder pads.
I'm new to the hobby and this video definitely is not noob friendly. I did an Army Painter Speedpaint Tutorial search (because the one coat and done is appealing for my gaming purposes), and I'm over 1/2 way through the video and haven't seen the Speedpaints used yet. I thought it was just prime and go. And you're using all these terms like glaze, matte finish (is that something like a varnish to protect the primer?), and mixing stuff in caps and I'm totally lost lol.
Is the Ultramarine primed (actual Primer Paint) with Black? Are the Values Highlighting using normal acrylic paint/ink? In other words, the only formal Primer paint is the black? cheers, Thank you for the content! appreciated.

Hi! I am loosing my mind trying to figure it out If it’s possible to paint with this fast painting technique a white Space Marine. Usino The same protocol but with white power armor. Thank you so much
I only have the starter set for these and tried them out a week ago on the miniatures for the Unsettled board game. I found that the gray in the starter set over plain white primer (which was how these paints were originally promoted) game out too light with very little variation. Saw a video ( might have been Goobertown) using a black base coat with white dry brush , similar to your method. Too dark. I ended up using a Uniform Gray base coat, then a white dry brush. Came out pretty nice. Not nearly as good as yours but decent. I didn’t know about the matte coat step, though I was using primer and a dry brush and not air, so I don’t think I had any issues with messing up those coats. Still, I want to lie these paints very much but I think I need more experience with them first. Also, the different colors behave differently from what I’ve seen; some work better than others I think.
MegaSets were all already sold out when I went to order... so I had to settle with a starter set and individuals of each one missing. I'll have to see how well the magic blue matches "Reaper Dragon Blue" to see if I can get away with using it for the rest of my Ultra Marine Army, but mostly looking forward to getting to the Crisis Protocol minis I've had knocking around since Xmas. Being able to paint up 3D prints quickly will make for more colorful DnD games as well!
Great tutorial but I am still hesitant to buy these paints since the colors all seem to be very bright and give minis a cartoonish look if you know what I mean. It works for Space Marines but I would like to see a tutorial on how to paint something like zombies where you want a dark, dirty look on your miniatures. I still can't see myself achieving this with Army Painter Speedpaints, so if you can come up with a convincing approach I would very much appreciate it!
I’d go watch the go over town hobbies view to see how all the colors look. Conversely a drybush over black will leave more desk areas and look way darker overall prob just what you’re looking for.
@@spikeybitstv ok cool. Yea I tried with airbrush primer yesterday and it just didn’t seem to go on with even enough coverage. My other friend just zenithalled his with liquitex white ink so I may try that next. Trying to move into airbrushing instead of rattle canning.
I've been playing with speed paints and have to say the whole reactivation thing hasn't really happened to me. I tried over a zenithal, I was happy with the gradients but everything felt to dark. I've upped the lightness to a brighter white and less contrast and whilst better no where near as smooth or vibrant as yours. Over straight white it sometimes feel too bright, although I'm sat looking at a model I'm thinking looks pretty awesome at the moment. Do you think the matte seal before adding speedpaint helps the paint move better than if you just did it over the zenithal and wash?
@@spikeybitstv I've done quite a few minis where each section has had different colours and not noticed. I am picking colours light to dark though. I have to admit though now I know about it, I have used it blend areas.

@@spikeybitstv People have reporting bleeding through well after drying. I wouldn't even matte varnish with this stuff. I had the mega set on preorder but cancelled due to these undisclosed issues.
All the comments here waffling on and factoring in waiting time for drying and the like... utter foolishness. Use a bit of common sense, it's 20 mins of painting effort, not 20 mins setting a stop watch from start to go. Who the hell ever factors in drying time, or expects this to be 20 mins start to finish. Bottom line, thus tute is all about showing how speedpaints can be used as a single coat solution with some care taken to the undercoat to provide a natural gradient in speedpaint colour. And it does a great job at that. And to those other fools whining about setup and clean-up of an airbrush, totally overinflating the actual time it should take... pull your head in or learn how to be quick and effective with the airbrush as a tool.
Maybe it was because too many people labeled these paints as contrast killers but the outrage so many people showed about the reactivation issue made no sense to me. It felt like they had gone to the hardware store and purchased a screwdriver and got mad when it wasn’t very effective when used as a hammer. It’s just like anything else, products have their own strengths and weaknesses. You just have to figure out how to use those properties to your advantage.
So to look amazing with speedpaint or contrast you need 300 steps to paint before applying speedpaint vs 300 steps after base coating with the normal paints. It looks the same effort and time to me. I apply the contrast or speedpaint above the primer and that's it. That is what these paints were made to do.
The reactivation is an issue for people because amateur painters will always not get the application perfect first time. They will want to locally correct errors. Otherwise fantastic video and gorgeous model.
Respectfully disagree. As I showed in the video if you make a mistake… just wipe it away and redo it. That is amazing you can just easily fix a mistake lol.

Rob, I love ya brother, but reconsider the title of the video. Speed Paint Batch Painting. Not 20 minute marines! That literally was a two day process. You’re better than click bait!
You can literally do the same thing for just one miniature in about 20 minutes as directed my dude. You save MORE time doing it in batches of multiple minis cause the models dry while you paint the next one.
@@spikeybitstv The airbrushing is a fraction of the time. Factor in setting up the airbrush, prep, cleaning it afterwards, waiting for the ink to dry and then, only then, can you begin to paint. Believe you said you left the mini overnight to dry before using the speedpaints. So, way more than 4 hours. Great looking mini and full credit to you for how it looks, but your title is a lie. Here's my challenge to you. Live up to your clickbait. Go from bare plastic to finished mini in 20 minutes. Then, I'll be impressed.

Like if you absolutely have to paint one mini in 20 minutes you can, however, it would be sensible if you did them in batches so they dried while you were working on the next... Here's my challenge to you. Master the hobby basics like priming or using and cleaning an airbrush before you throw hobby shade.

As I mentioned in the video, recording takes longer than the content. I simply split up the painting to accommodate my recording schedule. If it bothers you so much that you have been in the hobby so long and can not produce something similar I would suggest practicing more rather than lashing out at me with wild accusations. I am not your friend you have clearly come here to shit on what I do with a bunch of gatekeeping rhetoric because what you don’t like how I look, you think I’m too young to be in the hobby etc… this content has been one of my most requested pieces it clearly works and people are enjoying it. Stop being the problem and be the solution.
I guess army painter are quite happy to lose out on the massive market of people who would use speed paint in other ways, and they made sure that they wouldn't buy it by making it unusable for anyone doing more than one coat of paint. Makes sense, or they somehow didn't consider that people would want to use their paints differently, that makes almost as much sense.
Yeah how dare they design something to ACTUALLY work one specific way so people can use the product as directed for fast and easy results. Who makes something to work just one particular way, and expects it to catch on... The absolute nerve!

Hi! I am loosing my mind trying to figure it out If it’s possible to paint with this fast painting technique a white Space Marine. Usino The same protocol but with white power armor. Thank you so much
I only have the starter set for these and tried them out a week ago on the miniatures for the Unsettled board game. I found that the gray in the starter set over plain white primer (which was how these paints were originally promoted) game out too light with very little variation. Saw a video ( might have been Goobertown) using a black base coat with white dry brush , similar to your method. Too dark. I ended up using a Uniform Gray base coat, then a white dry brush. Came out pretty nice. Not nearly as good as yours but decent. I didn’t know about the matte coat step, though I was using primer and a dry brush and not air, so I don’t think I had any issues with messing up those coats. Still, I want to lie these paints very much but I think I need more experience with them first. Also, the different colors behave differently from what I’ve seen; some work better than others I think.

As much or as little as you want bro. Drybrush quick over a black primer and then apply paint maybe 5-10 minutes?
MegaSets were all already sold out when I went to order... so I had to settle with a starter set and individuals of each one missing. I'll have to see how well the magic blue matches "Reaper Dragon Blue" to see if I can get away with using it for the rest of my Ultra Marine Army, but mostly looking forward to getting to the Crisis Protocol minis I've had knocking around since Xmas. Being able to paint up 3D prints quickly will make for more colorful DnD games as well!

Great tutorial but I am still hesitant to buy these paints since the colors all seem to be very bright and give minis a cartoonish look if you know what I mean. It works for Space Marines but I would like to see a tutorial on how to paint something like zombies where you want a dark, dirty look on your miniatures. I still can't see myself achieving this with Army Painter Speedpaints, so if you can come up with a convincing approach I would very much appreciate it!
I’d go watch the go over town hobbies view to see how all the colors look. Conversely a drybush over black will leave more desk areas and look way darker overall prob just what you’re looking for.
Did you use white paint and not white primer for the airbrush layer?? I think i mis-saw this the first time and did it with white primer
This one was done with the white Ink. But you can use the airbrush primer or paint it’s all about personal preferecne
@@spikeybitstv ok cool. Yea I tried with airbrush primer yesterday and it just didn’t seem to go on with even enough coverage. My other friend just zenithalled his with liquitex white ink so I may try that next.

SP Relic Grey is a 1:1 match for Space Wolves Grey contrast.
I've been playing with speed paints and have to say the whole reactivation thing hasn't really happened to me.
I tried over a zenithal, I was happy with the gradients but everything felt to dark. I've upped the lightness to a brighter white and less contrast and whilst better no where near as smooth or vibrant as yours.
Over straight white it sometimes feel too bright, although I'm sat looking at a model I'm thinking looks pretty awesome at the moment.
Do you think the matte seal before adding speedpaint helps the paint move better than if you just did it over the zenithal and wash?
If used as directed "reactivation" isn't even an issue. That's why no one even noticed it, we used one coat, lol.
@@spikeybitstv I've done quite a few minis where each section has had different colours and not noticed. I am picking colours light to dark though. I have to admit though now I know about it, I have used it blend areas.

@@spikeybitstv People have reporting bleeding through well after drying. I wouldn't even matte varnish with this stuff. I had the mega set on preorder but cancelled due to these undisclosed issues.

All the comments here waffling on and factoring in waiting time for drying and the like... utter foolishness. Use a bit of common sense, it's 20 mins of painting effort, not 20 mins setting a stop watch from start to go. Who the hell ever factors in drying time, or expects this to be 20 mins start to finish.
Bottom line, thus tute is all about showing how speedpaints can be used as a single coat solution with some care taken to the undercoat to provide a natural gradient in speedpaint colour. And it does a great job at that.
And to those other fools whining about setup and clean-up of an airbrush, totally overinflating the actual time it should take... pull your head in or learn how to be quick and effective with the airbrush as a tool.

Maybe it was because too many people labeled these paints as contrast killers but the outrage so many people showed about the reactivation issue made no sense to me. It felt like they had gone to the hardware store and purchased a screwdriver and got mad when it wasn’t very effective when used as a hammer. It’s just like anything else, products have their own strengths and weaknesses. You just have to figure out how to use those properties to your advantage.
A lot of people mindlessly listen a little too much these days IMHO to negative rhetoric…

So to look amazing with speedpaint or contrast you need 300 steps to paint before applying speedpaint vs 300 steps after base coating with the normal paints. It looks the same effort and time to me. I apply the contrast or speedpaint above the primer and that's it. That is what these paints were made to do.
Oh yeah totally for sure I mentioned that in there or you can just do a quick dry brush and it’ll make your stuff look hundred times better too

The reactivation is an issue for people because amateur painters will always not get the application perfect first time. They will want to locally correct errors. Otherwise fantastic video and gorgeous model.
Respectfully disagree. As I showed in the video if you make a mistake… just wipe it away and redo it. That is amazing you can just easily fix a mistake lol.

You can literally do the same thing for just one miniature in about 20 minutes as directed my dude. You save MORE time doing it in batches of multiple minis cause the models dry while you paint the next one.

@@spikeybitstv The airbrushing is a fraction of the time. Factor in setting up the airbrush, prep, cleaning it afterwards, waiting for the ink to dry and then, only then, can you begin to paint. Believe you said you left the mini overnight to dry before using the speedpaints. So, way more than 4 hours. Great looking mini and full credit to you for how it looks, but your title is a lie.
Here's my challenge to you. Live up to your clickbait. Go from bare plastic to finished mini in 20 minutes. Then, I'll be impressed.

As I mentioned in the video, recording takes longer than the content. I simply split up the painting to accommodate my recording schedule. If it bothers you so much that you have been in the hobby so long and can not produce something similar I would suggest practicing more rather than lashing out at me with wild accusations. I am not your friend you have clearly come here to shit on what I do with a bunch of gatekeeping rhetoric because what you don’t like how I look, you think I’m too young to be in the hobby etc… this content has been one of my most requested pieces it clearly works and people are enjoying it. Army painter don't sell to canadians..
I guess army painter are quite happy to lose out on the massive market of people who would use speed paint in other ways, and they made sure that they wouldn't buy it by making it unusable for anyone doing more than one coat of paint.
Makes sense, or they somehow didn't consider that people would want to use their paints differently, that makes almost as much sense.
Yeah how dare they design something to ACTUALLY work one specific way so people can use the product as directed for fast and easy results. Who makes something to work just one particular way, and expects it to catch on... The absolute nerve!

it has never taken me that long, but you will save more time by batch painting these for sure.
