    It's hard to believe these are 10 years old already. I couldn't believe Apple switched to the Intel processors they bashed for so many years, but the consumer PPC roadmap was practically dead.
    I remember drooling over the new Powermac G5s, and people are pulling those out of dumpsters these days!

    Shove an SSD into one of these things, and they still have some pretty decent potential! Especially with the later core 2 Duo models.

      @@jason_a_smith_gb technically you can install XP so long as the unit has an internal working SuperDrive installed. Dos though, I’m not sure cause of drivers... also you can’t upgrade the CPU. The chips are saudered to the board.

      Cutoff for XP support is probably any mac released up to 2011. Up to that point the XP drivers are on the Snow Leopard install DVD, but Bootcamp in Lion doesn’t officially support XP. I’m pretty sure the drivers are somewhere on the internet if you don’t have the DVD.

    For 2019 and beyond, I would recommend that if you want to buy one of the plastic Macbooks, that you choose a 2009, whether it be an early or late model. Both can be made to run macOS Mojave if you use Dosdude1's macOS Mojave Patcher. If you just want a cheap Mac laptop to run Linux on, I'd go with a 2007 Macbook. The price is nearly the same as the original Macbook, but since the 2007 has a Core 2 Duo CPU, it can run a lot more Linux distros than the Core Duo Macbooks. However, if you already have a Core Duo Macbook lying around, go ahead and put Linux on it. Windows 7 is going to be discontinued on January 14th, 2020 (sad), and since Snow Leopard is getting outdated as David showed in his video, Linux is the best option for Core Duo Macbooks, and for any Core Duo Mac really.

    I never understood how anyone can hate a computer. I own both a Macbook Pro and a gaming PC I've built and it's the best of both worlds.

    • @jeznav
      @jeznav 8 лет назад +8

      +Topher Glenn Same here. I think most people hate due to the fact they have defend their purchases/investments from getting trounced by other peoples perception of 'mine's better than yours'. As a gadget geek myself, sure I may have bought stupid and useless products, (Ouya, Blackberry Playbook), but I never once made fun of someone using a Playbook tablet in public by because my experience for using one sucked. I'm more curious on how it works for them.
      But yeah my MacbookPro = office, work; PC = gaming, coding; Windows10, OSX El Capitan, Ubuntu; Me = :D

      Makes sense.

    • @RWoody1995
      @RWoody1995 8 лет назад

      +Topher Glenn the hate comes from people not liking the way the company that makes the system runs, apple likes to make their stuff very locked down, you can't do anything that's not approved by apple, although we all know the reason they do this is so they can make sure everything is of a good quality and secure but the freedom and infinite amount of programs and possibilities available on a windows pc and linux pc is much more appealing to a lot of people also theres the cost thing, if you wanted the apple hardware just to run windows you can but then you end up spending twice as much on the hardware just to run the same software that hardware half the cost will run and can still have the same build quality.

    • @IsettasRock
      @IsettasRock 8 лет назад

      +megaspeed2v2 Exactly! Plus, when I own a piece of computer hardware I expect it to be open and configurable to do what I'd like it to do, not what some company thinks I want (or thinks I shouldn't be able to do). The last Apple product I bought was a Apple 2+ back in 1981....I'll never again buy anything from Apple.

    • @Chris-yj2di
      @Chris-yj2di 8 лет назад +1

      IsettasRock Okay, but does that warrant some kind of adolescent hate from you? I don't think so, and It shouldn't, just don't buy it. I personally like being able to plug a midi instrument into my Mac and not having to worry about sound cards or drivers...I don't hate my PC because of it. It's like having two different tools in a toolbox. My original post was aimed at people who froth at the mouth and get angry in regards to one setup or another, which is childish.

      +Melvin Duineveld (melvin2204) Even newest versions of XP have a lacking 64-bit processor support with their unusual x86-64 architecture. It's also not supported by Windows in any way anymore, its harder and harder to find games that run well on it, and if you'd want to do any type of professional work on it using graphics/editing/design program, you'd find its simply obsolete.

I use the lowest spec model of the MBP but I upgraded to a 515GB SSD, cleaned out the insides till it looked new (changed thermal paste too cause it became dust) and went from 2 to 8GB RAM. It's speed, efficiency and battery easily matches any 2017 i3 laptop by Acer or other brands. Absolutely not obsolete, and at least I can still use my SD cards and wired mice while charging and connected to a monitor... without a dongle :D. So happy because my Uncle gave it to me corrupt thinking it was broken and little did he know, I brought it back to life and it's freshhh.

      Just install classic shell and it's an amazing system. Even more so on older systems since its hardware requirements are way lower than windows 10 and you don't run the risk of ruining the whole system with the next update....
      Also for whatever reason the runtime on battery is way better on windows 8 than on windows 10 (on older machines).

      I prefer windows 10, but for some reason all my laptops, even my desktop (all hdds) had the HDD at 100%. So I chose to install Windows 8.1 no 100% HDD over there. So I'll say windows 10 really good for ssds. I have windows 8.1 with classic shell, hell I have windows 10 installed as a secondary to keep up with the look, I always use classic shell. XD I'm more of a metro, but windows 7 style. If windows 7 had metro. That'd be awesome.

    Someone just gave me an early 2008 macbook with a core 2 duo and 1GB of ram in it. It will run OS X up to 10.7 (Lion), but on top of having to pay for it, all browsers i saw would require at least OS X 10.10 to be able to install. I had to decide if I would keep it as kind of a collectible, or install another OS and use it normally. Done some performance tests and it behaved quite well, so I put 4 GB of ram in it and installed windows 10 64 bit (just burn a DVD, pop it in the drive, wait a few minutes and it'll work). Works like a charm. The next upgrade will be an SSD.

      @Brother OOFSAUCE When one is unable to use Mac OS in day to day life because Apple releases updates that don't run on old machines, you are forced to go to a better OS like Windows. Apple loves forcing people to upgrade by breaking their old machine or striking them from updating by restricting the specs of new software. OP did the right thing, buddy. 😄

    Granted you're stuck with Chrome Apps/Extensions (so no non-web-based games like Minecraft), but it makes an 11 year old laptop feel like a new, off-the-shelf Chromebook.

    I would prefer a similar timeline Thinkpad over one of these.. as you said OSX is forced out by apple themselves (although I guess there must be some kind of workaround out there, I at least hope) the Thinkpad will have chipsets which support more USB ports for example.. plus pccards, and way more extra expansion options, also last but not least they will have this very advanced technology called a right click button.

    This video’s message is especially relevant now in 2021, when Apple is about to abandon Intel for their own chips. I’m not sure if Apple will continue supporting Intel macs for long, especially after how fast they dropped PowerPC. However, just install Windows and the mac goes from obsolete mac to a normal intel PC that will be supported until the hardware dies.

    • @fierelier7691

      not true, as of windows 11. 32-bit machines will be abandoned by microsoft after 2025, when windows 10 ceases updates. use debian, or devuan instead. they still have interest in these old platforms. it's a bit of a learning curve, especially if you have a proprietary wifi card (which is likely), but it's worth it, if you wanna keep using your machine. i recommend using Xfce as the desktop environment, it's relatively light, and can likely be suited to your needs, may you be a macOS or windows user.
      i still depend on windows, and i will probably keep using windows 7 for a couple of years, still.

    • @cubedmelons876
      @cubedmelons876 Год назад

      @@fierelier7691 I was more referring to the more recent 64 bit Intel macs released closer to the transition to Apple Silicon. The 32 bit macs from 2006 would be better off with Linux at this point, but then again, they're from 2006. Keeping a Bush-era laptop running in 2025 requires a lot of luck and handling with extreme care. I'm more concerned about Apple dropping support for their 3-4 year old hardware.

    so ... it is 2019 right now and on some forums they ask if Windows 10 runs on this system. They even ask if it is still usable as a Mac, which I usually disagree with. So my question: does Windows 10 1810 run on these machines? I have all MacBook A1181, from the early 1,1 to the maxed out 5,2 2,13 GHz version. But my 1,1 runs SL and Debian 9 - no Win10 to share experiences with others. Do you still run Win10 on your 32 Bit Mac?

  • @hoseinqadam
    @hoseinqadam 8 лет назад +80

    Apple forces the machine to become obsolete, once the hardware can run the latest of OS (windows in this case) then it won't be obsolete for a while.
    For $60.00, I can use this as an everyday laptop for school as it can run the latest office under the windows OS just fine.
    This is the side of Apple I really dislike, they force you to update just so they can get sales, (even though the machine can be used for a bit longer).
    I am not familiar with Apple and their OS, but what would happen if you tried to install the latest versions of OSX?

      Officially, the 06-07 models can only run up until 10.6.8 since it's the last x86 compatible version. 10.7 and newer are strictly 64 bit, though you can rig a copy of 10.7.5 to run on a Core Duo mac.

    • @romannasuti25
      @romannasuti25 7 лет назад +5

      this does leave a weird (but very pleasant) situation: Older Mac pros are super cheap now and can be, with some upgrades, made into beastly windows workstations. You can install a lot of modern graphics cards these days and the core2quad generation ones can even be overclocked a little, from a 2.8ghz version to 3.2 comfortably. This, plus the relatively low price of FBDIMM memory these days, means that one of the best desktop workstations you can get these days on a tight budget is, oddly enough, a Mac pro.

    • @romannasuti25
      @romannasuti25 7 лет назад +3

      also, the reason they're cheap is because Apple has made them incompatible with the newest versions of OS10 (particularly Sierra).

    Nice video. One great thing is that if you wait even just a single year for the Core 2 Duo to be released, they are much, MUCH more compatible and versatile than the previous model. It can run much more apps, much faster them even, not to mention it can run 10.7.5, or even 10.8.5 after a hack. I have an Early 2008 MB running ML and everything works like a charm, well, almost. Even a few 2D modern Steam games worked fine. It has 2GB of RAM, but I'll upgrade to 4GB hopefully soon. So, those ones are certainly not obsolete. And if you go a bit farther in time to Late 2008/Early 2009, then you can still run El Capitan without a hiccup. Great video. Oh, and ignore the haters. Thanks for posting your video; it gave me a little more insight about my MBP Core Duo. I picked up an A1150 (MBP 1, Late 2006) from a friend for $200. I mainly bought it for the 500GB EVO 840 SSD it had so I could swap that with my primary laptop's 250GB SSD. After that my intent was to sell it for the same price I bought it for since I am not an Apple user. I am only an Apple user at work since I have to support the system for customers. However, like a stray animal my newly purchased MBP grew on me and I decided to keep it long-term. I have Windows 7 running on it using Boot Camp and I hope to try out Windows 10. The A1150 model can only be updated to OS X 10.6.8 and it only accepts 2GB RAM.

      +Carldabomb classic start. that's it. that's literally the only program I installed that fixed every single thing that I had a problem with in windows 8.1. notice how I say 8.1 and not 8 because literally nobody uses 8. anyone with half a brain upgraded to 8.1. it's like a slightly faster version of Windows 7 with less compatibility issues with older programs and games ( at least in my experience) and it doesn't have retarded design changes like windows 10 does in things that don't need design changes at all like the control panel.

      Windows 10 is closer to 7 than 8.1 is.

      +Syko I'm gonna call bullshit on the bloat... considering a windows 10 system is smaller than a windows 8.1 system.

      I have my daughter's old high school daily driver - a mid2007 core2duo white plastic macbook. It works well enough but the battery's dead and since one of her classmates either fell on or stepped on her backpack at some point the LCD is shattered. I've got a replacement LCD out in the garage somewhere, but since I recently was gifted with a late 2011 i5 Macbook pro that runs Ubuntu Studio VERY well, some of the urgency scuffed off the fix-the-daughter's-old-laptop project. :D

    Thanks for posting this. I wanted to get into modern Macs for the 1st time last year, and overpaid for one of these older models that was capable of running OSX 10.7 Lion and had 2GB RAM. 64-bit Core Duo CPU, but 32-bit bootloader == nightmare fuel. OSX ran 64 bit but every other OS on it had to be 32-bit. I finally pawned it after getting my 2008 iMac ( which I'm posting this from ;-) ) and upgrading that to 6GB RAM + a USB3 solid-state boot drive with 10.11 El Capitan. The worst part is when ReFind gets overridden and you have to reinstall it, but it can also be installed from Linux.

    I am having issues booting the windows 10 installer on my 2007 macbook. Any suggestions? I have tried Refit and Refind. The install hangs at a black loading files screen.

    Can you tell me how to do this for my MacBook 2006 please? My MacBook hasn't been running well so I want to know where I can buy parts to upgrade my laptop from the battery compartment. Maybe even run windows on it, did you download the windows using a disc or a app from the internet?

    So refit installs windows? Boot camp just won't let me intall windows, as I removed the disc drive in order to install an SSD. Also what is the the CPU usage under windows? OsX is very heavy.
