  • A family living at a campground in Peterborough, Ont., says they’re being ordered to leave - despite paying for their campsite since arriving.
Shanna Miller, her husband and three children have been staying at Beavermead Campground since May 10. Miller claims severe medical conditions have kept her and her husband from regular work. In February she says “unsafe conditions” at a rental home forced the family to leave.
Unable to find affordable housing or shelter spaces in the city for her family, Miller says they pitched their tents in the campground and have paid for their extended stay.
“It’s not something I thought I would ever have to deal with,” she said. “It’s been a year since I’ve been looking for another place to live. I haven’t found it.”
    Global's Robert Lothian reports.

You can be unhoused and not homeless (if your family house is too dangerous to go back to), and you can even be homeless and housed. This is technically a lot of people. Do you own your house? Most people don't. They rent. You wouldn't call him homeless but, but they sure don't own a home. And you can be unhoused pretty damn quick.

We need to start HELPING each other rather than be part the problem. The manager and owner of the campground should be ashamed of themselves. I can't believe that what they are claiming is legal. It should be the law that if you have the ability to help a family have a place to stay, that it should be made available. Housing should not be a privilege, IT NEEDS TO BE A RIGHT. I'm a senior with disabilities, so am unable to work .I would think social services could get involved and point them in the right direction to get proper housing . My apartment building , in the last 3 years the rent has doubled . We have 39 apartments ,at this time we have 4 one bedroom and 2 two bedroom apartments empty.
So there are apartments, but no one can afford them
      Whats the answer ?
What if people are interviewed by social workers , advised on finding employment and then the government works with landlords like mine , and are willing to cover part of a residents rent
I'm a senior, I am constantly looking for help with housework, transportation, shopping.
Why is there not a safe place to hire these services, Is there a job bank for students and adults, where they can be vetted and available for work. Can't find work because of various medical issues. They have money to feed 2 dogs and buy a camping trailer. The whole story is very suspect, I imagine there are a lot of details that were left out on purpose to paint the perfect narrative.

How can they afford a campsite? They run around $40/night. I’d love to stay at a Prov. Park but they are too expensive for me. I’m 76 and living on CPP and OAS. I try and find free camping or Crown Land. This is a sad situation for a lot of people. GELP

You must accept your poverty by the government, camping for more than 2 weeks in one spot is not allowed

They should be I'm housing. Don't understand why they are not. I do however understand why the campground is doing this, it is not residential. And there is limited spaces these days

Most people here have are not even commenting on the actual issue. All of Canada is in a serious affordable housing crisis. There are way to many hard working Canadians that can barely afford to live.

I have a entire house across the street from me full of young people with medical conditions. Lots of dogs, pizza and Uber’s coming and going at least six times a day. Not one of them is employed, too many “Health Problems.”

This families priorities are in the wrong places. I saw a couple large dogs in that video. If those r their dogs I can understand partly why they cannot find affordable housing. With those dogs and the kids they would have a real Prob finding housing yet they prob choose to keep their pets then find themselves a affordable place. Like I said - priorities are in the wrong place

Part of me gets really angry when adults bring children into abject poverty . Zero forethought..minimal brains.
