  • While on vacation I filmed an Indian Frybread Recipe at Spider Rock Campground near Chinle, Arizona, with Lance, a Native American Indian. Check out my food blog for the Frybread Taco recipe, cheap ingredients, recipe text & photos: the99centchef....
    Ingredients
2 cups flour - enough for 2 or 3 Frybreads.
    1 tablespoon baking powder
    1 cup warm water
1 cup of shortening - or your favorite vegetable oil.
*Toppings on Frybread - salt, chili powder, sugar, honey, and cinnamon.
    Directions
Add flour and baking powder to a bowl.
Add a little water at a time and mix as you go.
Mix well for 3 to 5 minutes.
Add a few more sprinkles of flour at the end of mixing if the dough is too damp. It should not be too sticky to the touch.
Heat lard or oil in a pan or pot over medium/high heat. Drop a small dough ball the size of a pea into hot oil. It should immediately bubble and brown.
Now grab a handful of dough and spread it out with your hands. In my video the native cook spreads the dough out over his fist, pulling it down on all sides.
Sprinkle on flour if the dough is too sticky to handle. Move dough from fist to fist and pull edges each time until the dough is a small pizza size, about 6 to 8 inches across.
Drape Frybread dough carefully into the hot oil. The dough should bubble and puff like a doughnut.
Fry for a couple of minutes on each side until light brown. Frying time varies depending on the heat of the oil.
When Frybread is done drain on a paper towel.
Typical toppings for Frybread include cinnamon, sugar, or honey. Salt and chili powder are savory additions.
