- Dead and Company decided to break out the acoustic guitars at Fenway Park on 6/18/2017. This is Friend of The Devil. I've seen and heard this song performed many times, but this is truly one of my favorites.
John brings a lot of people to this music that normally would not be drawn to it . And, he crushes it in my opinion.
A surprising amount of younger people getting into the Dead.
Yeah man mayer is to thank. It’s awesome. I’m 26 . I never liked them much and don’t dig deep for em but then John in 2015 joined them and they began touring and I saw that show and after have been many since and have found gems I didn’t know of.
John Mayor has brought the dead back to life. Jerry would be so happy
BanjoBandit John Mayer yes but credit to Bobby Blue Jeans for bringing these guys together. A new glorious era indeed
Amen to that
@@d.banerjee4777 I miss his blue denim shorts. They were as much part of the band as any member.
Many heads still very resistant but I’m damn sure glad he’s doing it
John has really grown into it but Oteil and Jeff should not be overlooked because they are special in this formation! Crazy that Jeff has been the longest tenured Dead keyboard player, if you include the incarnations since Jerry moved on.
Took my daughter to this show, her FIRST. Killed this song!! Oh yah…. It happened to be Father’s Day!!
Such a treat 🎉
Johnny's getting it totally into it too Jerry would love it
Credit to Bobby for reviving The Dead back to former glory I never had the privilege of experiencing (I'm only 34- ha only!) until recently. To another 50 years of the best music in the world!
I saw them live in saratoga. Just amazing. When they played looks like rain it started to rain with the sun still shining. I think Jerry was with us.
Conservative Hippie I was at that concert, Jerry was watching us that day, their was a rainbow to during that to
Rip Jerry we miss you may you play in heven
I was there. Then the rainbow came. Then every one on the lawn waved at it and said calmly, "hi jerry: one of my favorite concert moments.
The bassist always seems so happy. I suppose I would be too, if I were him.
Yea, Oteil is always smiling. What I noticed about this particular tune is that at one point or another all of them were smiling. They had a a lot of fun playing this acoustic mini-set.
Scott Ruckoldt Yes! For when Oteil starts shaking his booty to and fro, SHITS'S ABOUT TO GET REAL!
Scott Ruckoldt Yes! For when Oteil starts shaking his booty side by side to and fro, SHITS'S ABOUT TO GET REAL!
Well maybe the acid has something to do with it. :)
@@Submariner75 yup! I'd recognize that smile anywhere.
2019 anyone? Definitely the best FOTD I’ve heard.
Had to work a long shift on Jerry’s birthday but im making up for it today
@@Jay-vv6wl I suggest you
Listen better. Many superior versions.
Jerry’s versions were truly special and made you feel it deep in your soul. It made you ache yet feel great at the same time. Knowing the struggle and knowing it was a long way out of the rabbit hole but the hope and longing was ever present.
great :]
back to the old tempo and acoustic! every one was diggin the jam! :]
I have only seen bits and pieces from this tour but this version of FOTD was absolutely amazing. I've watched it about 10 times today!
Kevin L. Harrington Jr. Digging it was right! It was amazing to hear it!
As much as I love the later slower tempo Devils, I prefer the earlier more up beat one.
Yea, but as a long time Dead Head, I NEVER once saw an acoustic FOTD live. I think that's the essence of this video.
Cary Silverman Me either, or an acoustic Ripple. Come to think of it, since 1986 when I saw my first show in Buffalo I never saw an acoustic guitar make an appearance. I was so psyched!
Man... I'll listen to that a few more times
My favorite Dead song. I love Counting Crows cover.
yo that solo at the 5 minute mark....unreal
Smokin' version! A pleasure to be there. 6:48-52 second row:
Jerry evidently agrees.
Beatnik hipster Jerry. Where's Waldo?
Grate show! I was there.
Was supposed to see them this summer at Fenway. This will have to do for now. Hope I get the chance to see Dead and Co soon!
Sunday shows are always special in some unique way. Friend was blowing everybody away, the acoustic Dark Star to Ripple was whip cream on top, will never forget it. Enjoy.
Right on Phil. An acoustic Dark Star? Are you kidding me? I saw the Dead before Jerry died roughly 40-45 times, mostly in Atlanta. My first and only Dark Star was the boys last Dark Star. That show was in The Omni in Atlanta on March 30, 1994.
Cary, it was amazing . I went with my Brother, both shows. Saturday night was amazing. We walked in Sunday and everybody was like, What can they do to top Saturday night? One guy goes, "Sundays are sometimes very special shows" and boom, we get these 3 acoustic gems of Devil into Dark Star then Ripple! My Bro started his journey at the Fillmore In NY, 1971 all the way till last weekend. We loved John, he respects the music and plays it as close to Jerry as anybody, but then puts a twist on it that is so unique and cool. I know they were down in Atlanta, hope you saw them, if not try to get to Chicago, those shows will be as special as Fenway. Peace
My wife and I moved to Sarasota a little over 4 years ago. Unfortunately, they never get close to here. I wish they'd add Tampa to one of their tours. That's about an hour away. I'm cool with it though. I've been to so many shows over the years. One of my favorites and also a bucket list item was seeing them at Red Rocks in 2013 when they were still touring as Further. Man, that venue is something else and was always very special to the Dead. I envy your brother so much. Getting on the bus that early is something special. Would love to know what shows he saw during that epic 77 year. My only regret in life where music is concerned is that I didn't get on the bus until the early 80s. So much great live music I should have seen!
I can't believe how cool this sounds. Brought a tear to me eye.....😊
Sweet Anne Marie, she's my hearts delight
Second one is prison, baby the sheriff's on my trail,
Going back to Fenway baby, can’t wait!
The best guitarist of my generation playing with the quintessential jam band. ...fucking heaven for millenials.
Johnny Salami on acoustic.... niiiice
This was one of the first dead songs that got me spun
Same. Im actually a Mayer fan first, and this is one of the first covers of them he has done to my knowledge. And at first I thought it was his song. And I thought they were some of the best lyrics he's written. Then I found out soon after that it was actually a Grateful Dead cover. Thats what really put them on my radar. What an odd, unpredictable, but perfect pairing.
JM has redeemed anything that may have ever needed redeeming.
Really great set list here
why did they always miss out that sweet bass lick from the intro in the studio version?
Ive seen bobby over 150.times and only 6or7 with jetrry so ive supported him through some dark times. I gotta say this band is in top form right now and.the best part is that weir finaly has a great voice next to him this guy is the full package man. Listen to next time you see me in hartford. Best thing ive ever heard come off.a weir stage. Sounds like stevie ray it wss sock
If this isn't the ultimate reminder that "life is fucking good" I don't know what is.
My first dead and co show
Love you Bob!
This is a great version of Friend Of The Devil.
“Dead&CO.Are appearently a Good Band!😊
Forever
I am SO glad they've shaken off the heroin/sludge/depression/half-speed version of this. Sorry, Jerry, but this is the RIGHT way. (Ha! I sure told HIM, huh?)
Rockin that 75,000 dollar dumble
Not on this song dude. Definitely not an acoustic amp.
eargasm @ 4min 51 secs.
I was really digging Bobby's solo and then John starts .... no disrespect ... John makes Bobby look like ... a rhythym guitarist. Love it
jon jon Watch Mickey turn his head and let out a big smile toward John as he recognizes John starting into his solo. Nice when band members respect and enjoy each other's skills.
Does anyone have the video of all 3 acoustic songs ending that set?
Seymore Bunson Its out there and may become available in time, but Nugs TV are on patrol and pulling songs ans entire shows off you tube. I had an entire playlist of many songs and shows, and the videos got deleted. I'm guessing it's Nugs TV...
Much like life. Attendance is optional. If you don't like it move on. Nobody validated you as a critic and Jerry wouldn't either so get your butt up out of here. Play on.
Jerry is in the second row absolutely enjoying it!! 6:48-6:53
Everything has gone wrong today, but thank you to Bob, john, oteil, Mickey and Jeff for making it better
6:48 is that Jerry on the right?
I've watched this video a bunch of times and never noticed that Will. Thanks for pointing it out! LOL
Great fuckmg tune
Did Bob just add the last verse???!!
Good catch. I hadn't even noticed that but it appears he did change up the lyrics a little bit there at the end.
john mayer is so good man
He really is, I dont get the hate. Hes brought the Dead to a new generation of lovely people, and as a guitarist of 39 years he inspires me to practice more.
They say that Rod Brind'amour was a son of a woman who was a horse-trainer. And she spanked him as a kid. And his nose turned out like that.
Last run 2023 git it son😅
Booby needs to let John sing Jerry's stuff or start touring as Ratdog.
I agree.
There is a reason Jerry sang Jerry's songs
and Bob sang Bob's songs.
Lol, Booby. I totally agree, but I also lost it right there.
I mean I think some John should take but I think Bobby does a good job on some. Loser for on is great Bobby’s aged voice kinda ads to the story. But a song like Tennessee Jed Bobby is kinda a dud
Finally someone said it, I agree, John's voice is much better for the songs Jerry sang. Bobby should only sing what he originally sung, when he opens this it just doesn't have the same feel
Thank Goddess for John Mayer 🙏
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The only thing that would made this better for me was if Otel used an upright string bass.
Well u know you gotta take an take account for that when you're that's forever you no knows know known. So on.
Get ready. Oh Mazi February 24
Well have you ever been that part of God that's still alive an of God in the devil so call that's.
6:50 jerry? lol
There was enough acid taken that night to kill a horse
Pretty nice version, but I prefer good ol' Bob ruclips.net/video/MqTL2GIheYQ/видео.html
John Mayer has better technique, still Jerry's solo was way better😉
Never forget the importance of phrasing
they still take forever between songs, guess it wasn't garcia......these guys are literally a skeleton the Dead. After jerry passed the GD was over. please let him finally rest in peace
I am sure that Jerry is thrilled that these guys are still bringing the music to the fans. He is resting peacefully.
Bogus dude. Jerry just liked to play. Mayer and Oteil aren't Jerry and Phil jr. Let they boys play.
If it wasn't for this rendition of the band, I would've never discovered the Dead's music at all. I'm 21 and I can proudly call myself a Dead Head now... but it was only because I first saw them with Mayer, Oteil, and Jeff.
Listen to Ripple dude. Old Dead.
Amen Sam! I love hearing from younger guys and gals that are still finding this music that some of us older guys have loved for decades. Glad you're on the bus friend!
John should just play his
Voice doesn’t work on these songs.
Not entirely sure what "John should just play his" means. That comment doesn't even make sense. Mayer works fine and fits in so well with this band, unless you think he should sound like Jerry. That's not what they're trying to do. If they wanted a voice that kinda sounded like Jerry and a guitar that did the same, Bobby would have let Kadlecik play that part. Dead and Company clearly has their own sound.
