  • Welcome to Ian Mac Woodturning! In this weeks woodturning video I decided to go back to using some Eucalyptus.
    After turning it a little it was obvious that there were lots of cracks which meant I needed to turn it down a little and make it smaller, I did my best to fill the cracks but as the wood is still wet, there is a good chance that it probably won't hold up!

    This turned out beautifully! I didn’t realize it was such gorgeous wood. Great job!

    That's so beautiful. I love it. 😻
    I hope you and your family are doing well.
    If you would, please keep my son, Chance, in your prayers. I was born with congenital spondylolisthesis which causes vertebras to slip forward. I've had a spinal fusion when I was a child and then broke my spine in 2009. Two years later, my Chance's dad broke his also.
    Now, Chance has a slippage of the L5 vertebra and has broken his L5 and S1 vertebras. He will have to have a spinal fusion. He's only 23. He's a rough and tough kind of guy. He's always worked hard and played hard. He has never been one to just sit down and relax. He's an auto mechanic and also does some construction and remodeling. His favorite pastimes are outdoor activities like fishing and hunting.
    He's having a hard time with not being able to do the things he likes to do.
    Of course, I'm sad about it. I know the pain he's having to endure and what he has to face in the future. Luckily, he's seeing a neurosurgeon that is with one of the leading neuro groups in the country and my pain management doctor will be seeing him starting in June.
    Sorry for rambling. I just wanted to share with you. God bless you, Ian.

    Nice piece. I have 2 eucalyptus root logs I will be turning soon. The roots are red color. They are over 15 years old and at 6% humidity. Luckily they didn't crack as they were in a storage unit for a while. I got the roots from a freeze we had in Florida back in the late 1990s. The tree wood is soft as I brought them down with rope then cut the trunk with a chainsaw. The roots were well preserved when I dug them up and saved them. I'll be making a bowl and a goblet with them soon.
    The vase you made is gorgeous.

    It's a finicky wood alright! I've had some good success cutting spindles but you need to cut a lot of the sap wood away as well as the pith so you're not left with a lot of usable timber. It has great grain though! Cheers, Dave

      Cheers Dave! Yeah it’s a bit of a pain to be honest, the drying process hasn’t been great though which has definitely resulted in more cracks haha.

    Hi Ian, That is beautiful.
    Eucalyptus is such a stunning wood but every piece I have turned has cracked terribly which is a great shame.
    I have a huge slab of it left about 6" deep and 30" by 24" which is tucked away in the other shed and has been for about 4 years now.
    I may well dig it out and see what it's like now.
    Great video as ever mate.
    Take care Ian.
    Cheers, Huw

      Eucalyptus can take forever to dry out. I live down under and tunalot of it.
      If you’re careful and dry it out. No cracks. Good. Luck

    • @IanMacWoodturning
      @IanMacWoodturning  2 года назад

      I think Jet have some good small lathes, I used a cheap one from machine Mart to start out and it worked fine, you should be fine with most small lathes

  • @singlended

    I would rough it out further, eg with the bandsaw, hatchet, or angle grinder carver etc before mounting in the lathe.

    Bela obra de arte: parabéns . Pena que esta madeira não tenha um " comportamento " muito estável, pois o percentual de peças torneadas é quase 100% que em seguida irão rachar .Existe algo que poderia ser feito para mudar este comportamento ? Aceito opiniões . Agradeço desde já .

    If you would like to stop the cracks forming then within minutes of cutting the timber out paint it totally, sides and ends. When the paint is dry it can be dated and on pieces of around 3" diameter it can be turned about 12 months later. Pieces up to 4" give it 2 years but above that I have no experience.

    • @IanMacWoodturning
      @IanMacWoodturning  2 года назад

      Hey John, yeah we’ve glued all of the ends of these but they still crack a lot, Eucalyptus has a tonne of moisture in it so I’ll have to have a play around with some more in the future and find the secret to drying it well.

    • @JohnWilliams-iw6oq
      @JohnWilliams-iw6oq 2 года назад

      @@IanMacWoodturning By painting the ends and the sides you slow down the drying process so moisture can move within the wood but the sides must be painted or the wood will still crack.
