Woodturning - My Best Firewood Transformation Yet?

- When I was loading up the wood burner over winter I noticed that this piece of Ash had some interesting grain, so I grabbed it and took it into the workshop. Unfortunately, the ripples in the grain didn't go through the entire piece of wood so the bottle opener and corkscrew are a little plain.
The corkscrew is finished with Danish Oil and Wood wax, and for the bottle opener, I used sanding sealer and wood wax.
Let me know what you think!

Disclaimer:
My videos are for entertainment purposes only. Some of my techniques might not be the "best" or safest, so when using any tool or machinery always read and understand safety/manufacturers guidelines first.
And Yes, I'm aware that wearing gloves while woodturning is considered an unsafe practice. The gloves I wear are tight-fitting and don’t have any loose threads. I wear them for the protection of my skin. This is a risk that I am willing to take, however I am still very conscious of the potential danger and I do not touch any spinning parts of the lathe. DO NOT copy my actions if you feel unsafe doing so.
Do you like these? Are they boring or just your sort of thing? 😁👍
I like these! I enjoy repurposing scraps into gifts that I would have otherwise just added to the burn pile.
Really like them.
I thoroughly enjoy your posts!
Totally enjoy!
I love watching your videos. I don't look at firewood the same way anymore!
Wonderful grain, it really shone and ofcourse you can't fault how extremely useful they are... 🍻🍾
Thank you Sol! I was very happy with the finish, I would have just preferred better grain 😁👍
That is a beautiful bar set.
What you do with wood is AMAZING 🤩🤩.
Thank you very much Madeleine! I really appreciate it 😁👍
So beautiful, the hanlde looks great. 👍👍
I love it, I enjoy watching you transform a piece of wood into something great 👍
Thank you very much David! Which one do you like most? 😁👍

Hi Harry. I enjoy watching them all. I think you are very talented and I look forward to finding new ones coming out. Plus you are a Kentish lad where I come from, now I live in Australia. Keep it up, you give me endless hours of entertainment.
I like simple projects I can replicate. I also like watching complex projects that I can’t replicate but that are examples of master craftsmanship. Good video.
Thank you Matthew! I like to show you variety 😁👍
WOW❣️❣️❣️ This is a little gem❣️
Thank you very much Venita! 😁👍
Nothing you do is boring...good job!
Thank you as always Umberto! I hope you're well 😁👍
I could watch your videos for hours. Your transformations remind me of taking pottery out of a kiln! Gorgeous surprises. My Dad was a master work-worker. He would have loved seeing what you do.
Very nice sir have a great day ✌️
Thank you as always Mate! Which one is your favourite? 😊👍
Not boring at all Harry,very stylish,practical pieces.Excellent.
Fantastic as usual. A beautiful set. Would be a wonderful addition to any home. Love them. ❤
Thank you very much Gail! Which one is your favourite? 😊👍
@@HarrySmithWoodturning I can’t pick a favorite. I love both pieces.
AWESOME!!!!
Thank you Drew! Which one do you like most? 😁👍
@@HarrySmithWoodturning the wine opener, cause most beer in America has twist off caps…hahaha
Have you set up a store yet Harry? Those would make nice gifts...
Still working on it Rennae, sorry I will get it done soon. Are these the things you're interested in 😁👍
@@HarrySmithWoodturning naturally, but I think they would make wonderful gifts that are easy to ship. I like stuff that is made out of wood that has a beautiful grain lol
I would not say boring , I watch turning videos to see the tools people use and how they use them . A voice over explaining what you are doing and why would be nice , but we can still see a lot . OB shine juice is my " go to " finish but yours looks nice in a bit more matte . Maybe easier to use for ash , being more open grain
Do a lot of bottle openers and stoppers fun to turn and you sir do a great job 👍 😀
Thank you very much Tim! I love a simple project every now and again 😁👍
Just perfect! The cork screw looks like one I have in my kitchen, but yours is still much fancier. 😸
Thank you Trincia! Which one is your favourite then, the corkscrew? 😉👍😁
@@HarrySmithWoodturning actually, both together as a couple. I would love to have two of those.
I have been wanting to tackle a few small projects like this and haven't but now I am motivated to do so...Thanks Harry!
Thank you! It's January, and everyone struggles with motivation. Let me know how you get on 😁👍
@@HarrySmithWoodturning Hi Harry. I turn something everyday. On occasion I do get to a point where I do not want to turn anything, when that happens I go out and search for NEW wood to make blanks from and that always gets me motivated especially when I find the good stuff or something unusual.
Absolutely beautiful, mesmerized watching the whole process . I want to try woodturning, I wish there was a woodworking class I could attend to give it a try.
Thank you very much Lucy! I'd definitely recommend trying a class, but as you say they can be hard to come across 😊👍
Lucy , I bought a lathe many years back , before internet . Didn't use it much , no classes within 500 miles . Now with RUclips you can get tutorials on any aspect, and I have been getting into more . Now days there are places that rent out shop space and tools as well as having staff that will instruct , one on one . I definitely would recommend accessing something like that before investing in a set up . A good lathe costs a lot , and accessories will eat up at least as much more . There are a lot of different options and finding out that you bought incorrectly for your interests can be disheartening
Nicely done.
Thank you Doug! Do you like them? 😁👍
Wow, great finish! Really nice.
Thank you! Which one do you like most? 😁👍
@@HarrySmithWoodturning probably the corkscrew. I know how hard symmetry is in woodturning. And you nailed it with this one.
Nice one Harry.
Thank you! Do you like them? 😁👍
They are great and great work. I bet that lathe really is fun and a lifesaver? I have been having to make the smaller items by hand. But you do great work
Looks like ash! Nice conversion.
Absolutely right Noel! Thank you! 😁👍
I like them, not everything can have spectacular grain, especially when turning something this small.
Thank you Cheryl! Very true, But I just love it when wood is rippled all over, I've got some amazing pieces of rippled maple, maybe ill make another bottle opener with that soon 😁👍
Cheers!😂
Thanks for watching Alf! 😁👍
sweet
Thank you very much David! Which one do you like most? 😁👍
Where did you get the cork screw & bottle opener parts ? I'd love to try to make something like these beautiful pieces. Thanks !!

If I may ask. How do you clean your tools? I am new to wood turning. Thank you for your time.
I like them. Simple yet elegant. Now to make them out of clay! (My art)
Thank you Sue! I've always wanted to try pottery throwing, maybe one day. Which one is your favourite? 👍😁
Nice job, what is the bandsaw you use.
Cool idea, am I coming to yours or you to mine🍷..?
Thank you! Might be a bit of a journey 😂😉 which ones your favourite? 👍😊
@@HarrySmithWoodturning well your in UK, I’m living in Germany so it’s a min of 11 hours drive home to Bournemouth plus where ever you are.
I actually like the wine opener 1st, then the bottle opener, look forwards to your next video
Obviously enjoying yourself and have great following, but please stop wearing gloves on the bandsaw. I had an accident where the bansaw dragged a glove down into the bottom of the saw. It was totally shredded and took ages to disentangle it. I used the glove to flick away sawdust, I had a strong hold of the glove but it was ripped from my hand. If I was wearing the glove I would have lost many fingers. Stay safe.
This video confused me in the beginning it seemed like you were just taking a chunk of wood and cutting it up. The finished product was nice - the grain, the color, & the execution was nice...all nice. This is what I think. I think that if you are going to show projects others can learn from and duplicate, then you should be explaining what you're doing...every step of the way...even if you think it's obvious. You chose a hunk of fire wood - why? You took it to the ban saw - why? What's the project you're gong to make. What were you wanting to end up with to take it to the Lathe? You put it on the Lathe. How do you decide which way to put it on...both ends?...What safety measures are you taking? Mask....Face shield...arm covering... (why you shouldn't wear gloves...) Do these differ depending on the type of wood, the machine...etc.... What speed(s) are you running the Lathe? What gauge/tool/size/shape/reason are you using...and why. Measuring - why? What are you sanding with (tool/grit)? What are you using for a finish (& why)...oil (what kind)...sealant (what kind)...wax (what kind)...? Do you sign your work? Do you see where I'm going with this? If you're going to teach...then teach. People can not read your mind. Ok...most can't...lol....
If you want to teach, then by all means, teach. Phil Anderson can't be the only teacher on RUclips. But, if that's not what you're wanting...then stop playing safe. You're good, you're really good at this Harry. I'm not blowing smoke. You have a whole lot of talent.. That's just my opinion.
ASMR it's not the destination but the journey - the process is the reward.
I will try to do it with Woodglut plans.
Hello Harry, just subscribed. Nice work, 🪵🇺🇸
