Yep, that's right, I cut my finger on the bandsaw, luckily it was very minor. Just a reminder to me not to rush, and to think before I do things. Silly me 🙄😯
Mistakes and slip ups happen, which is why the safety measures exist. You probably saved a finger by having your hands relatively clear of the blade before the slip. Glad that you're okay, hearing/seeing the amount of force applied to cut that wood was worrying, but anyone who works with tools knows the desire to just finish a bandsaw job.
You're not a turner if you never had a little injurie! Glad it's minor, two years ago I had a serious injueri on my left thumb using chainsaw...lesson learned and keep on working...howevver you maee a perfect job, as usual. Thanks for sharing!
That is a nice looking piece, simple, but nicer for it, even better it has a use. They look very much like Hob-Nobs and that scores 10 from the Southend judge!🏆
Hi Harry... I'd like to make a suggestion to you. If you're going to use a bandsaw for wood, Look into a different blade. The blade you're using looks like a metal or "fine finish". For doing what you're doing, you need a 3TPI type blade. Maybe look into a 1/2 inch 3TPI blade skip tooth blade. This will make your job much easier and more safe.
Harry, despite the "almost tragic accident with your finger..." That turned out very very pretty, beautiful piece! And for the record, I am glad that it was just a minor incident, just remember when you start getting overconfident back the boat up and remember safety first.
It's easy to get complacent and make careless mistakes. I'm glad it was minor and the lesson wasn't learned at greater cost! The grain on that wood is simple brilliant! It would have been a shame to burn that, for sure. Just curious, was the choice to use a different wood for the lid a design choice or were the pieces you cut off to round and shape the stump on the bandsaw not large enough to make a lid?
I like all your work, I to like playing with the odd piece of wood. I liked the way you handled the core, A question: what wood the core plug was made from?
I'm not much of a turner yet , but I've learned to spot nice grain from a long way back , and even just in the thumbnail that looked interesting and had to watch to see the results . Edit , very nice chatoyance. Did you have any more of this firewood, enough to make the plug out of sidegrain , and the lid with the same wood ?
Hi Harry hope your finger is OK. What are you going to do with the pieces you cut of on the bandsaw of this fire wood? The wood has some really nice grain and colour I really love the cookie jar you really are a masterwoodturner you haveca brilliant imagination. I love all the pieces you make they are all unique including this cookie jar, the lid is lovely with nice grain and the know on the lid to open it is lovely wood the colour is magnificent and the grain is nice. Omg Harry. Please be careful. It looked like the front of the woods fibres where tighter than the back, causing the quick release and pushing you towards the blade with your own weight.
The blade is too fine and that makes you push the wood harder to try & make it cut faster. In turn, that makes you continue to keep that hard pushing going until right near the end of the cut. In turn, that makes your hand fly forward toward the blade when the blade breaks through at the end. Your hand then goes fwd onto the blade. I've done it myself but luckily still have all my digits. ALWAYS back off on the pushing near the end. The blade will cut through just as quick.
Yep. Shop Safety 101. One of our machinists at work learned the hard way last year. Lathe caught the glove while he was turning a piece of stainless rod, and RIPPED HIS THUMB OFF OF HIS HAND. Surgeons were able to reattach it, but he’ll never be the same. Looks horrific as well. 😬
What a privileged schooling you had. You have a great deal to be thankful for. Not many schools have access to lathes, skilled woodwork teachers, and sufficient seasoned wood to enable each pupil to make large projects like this! How wonderful.

Really suprised that the 'Gloves Brigade' haven't had a go!!!!!
They will be here soon enough. I am sure the glove helped to save a chunk of my finger. Thank you for the support Sol

@@HarrySmithWoodturning the piece turned out beautiful Harry. The grain and colour contrast was very effective.
You continue to educate and amaze..😮
Did that with my thumb, straight into the blade. The project looks great.
Does your thumb still work properly? Could have been a dull blade causing you to shove the wood into the cut. Best regards. 😵💫
...I really like it when wood is saved from the fireplace and turned into something useful...well done, Harry...👍

Love the grain.
Love the cookie jar. You didn’t even have you hand in it and it got smacked by the bandsaw.

You need to be a little gentiler with the band saw! It appears like it let you know that!

Rule #1. LET THE TOOL DO THE WORK.
