We had a summer activities program in our city, had little league, swimming and a summer wood shop. Teacher wood get wore out bowling pins from the bowling alley. To get the covering off he chucked then in the lathe and used a gouge to strip the plastic. Big mess of curly plastic string but it was done in like four passes.
For future use of bowing pins , if you heat the plastic cover with a hot air gun , you can remove it without damaging the core . Before using your jumbo Forstner bit , hone the cutting edges and slow your rpms . Most of your cuts using the carbides can be done using your nice oval skew and leave a smooth tool finish that you can sand starting with 220 or 320 paper And for those new to wood turning , using a handful of shavings held agaist the spinning object is called Burnishing , a form of polishing Your finished project is beautiful,
When drilling on projects between centers , lock the drive spindle and use a spring center punch to locate your drilling points , and prevent it from turning and making the hole off center
@@HarrySmithWoodturning the entire process was engaging. I was perplexed as to what the final outcome would be. the wood was so beautiful when stained and polished, quite a work of art from a lowly bowling pin, I would not change a thing.
Thanks for watching! What's your favourite part of the piece? Would you change anything for the next time I make one? 😊 PS I am visiting Rome in February!!
Thank you Paul! I bought quite a few pins from an auction, most likely an alley was renewing it's pins. What would you like to see me make with the others? 😊
@@HarrySmithWoodturningI think a wine bottle cooler would be perfect for that shape! @@PhilSimsonI think a Coke glass bottle would be good. A wine bottle would be too large you would have to get the one's they provide on a plane and you'd only get a mouthful of wine...😂
Great work. The only thing was the last part, that u should have an hour or two just letting the plug get glued to make the hole. Its just so annyoing when the plug just go with the flow. But i couldnt do anything of that better. Great skills!
I would have liked a little less hat with a tilt on it for some frosty attitude but great job im sure it will become someones family tradition each year

So if you don’t want to pay $300, I’ll make you one for $50! Lol I cannot believe this thing is $300. You could have gone with Birds Eye maple, something a bit more exotic if your price point is $300!!!
You're joking, right? This isn't something you're gonna find at Walmart; it's not mass made in a factory. This is a hand carved one-of-a-kind piece made of multiple types of wood, not to mention the bowling pin is just fun! $300 is VERY reasonable for someone's time, effort and artistic skill. Because it's not even about the money, it's about showing appreciation to the artist, and all he does; on top of him having to film, edit, upload and manage this entire channel, all for our entertainment. Saying it's only worth $50 is pretty insulting to the artist.
@@fauxque5057 All I know is, if someone offered me one sixth of what I normally get for my jewelry and art, I'd be pretty insulted. I defend him in asking $300 for it as it's already stated that's what he normally gets for it. I can't make anything like this, and it would take me quite a lot of practice to learn it, and I already am an artist. And that's the point, it's not about actual value; art is about perceived value and what it means/feels/says to someone.
Would of laughed if he made a smaller bowling pin. 😂 Looks amazing tho!
That's honestly what I was expecting to happen. Lol.
It’s a beautiful snowman, but the patterning of the wood also makes it look like a little penguin too. So pretty!
I was trying to figure out what else I was seeing. At first I thought nutcracker, but penguin makes more sense.
Wow, I think this is the first wood turning video I’ve ever seen that wasn’t a table leg, a vase, or a bowl. Nicely done! 😂
Absolutely Awesome and stunning. The colors are spot on and the work you did, shows. OUTSTANDING.

is it a penguin? Frosty had a nose made from button.
