I'm kinda of an novice in Judo and your videos helps me fighting on the ground. I used to fo MMA so i knew some basic moves. With your videos I learned some new tricks to show off to my buddies at my Judo club. Thanks alot!
Well remember pro wrestling EVOLVED FROM CATCH WRESTLING. In fact pro wrestling is a STAGED form of catch wrestling. And catch wrestling was known for it PAINFUL SUBMISSIONS.
@SeanStrife I am pretty sure that this technique probably comes from Catch Wrestling and made its way through the submission world and into pro wrestling over the last 20 years or so. I just happen to pick it up from a jiu jitsu instructor around 2006.
It indeed came from catch wrestling. In fact pro wrestling is a STAGED form of catch wrestling. Many of the moves found in catch wrestling including double wrist lock(kimura lock), front facelock(guillotine choke), wrestling guillotine/grapevine abdominal stretch(twister), sleeper hold/RNC(including the one on the GROUND WITH BODY SCISSOR/GUARD called by Shayna Baszler THE KURIFUDA CLUTCH), ETC. It is just that pro wrestling is RETURNING TO IT ROOT(CATCH WRESTLING).
You guys have helped me a lot! I started training mma a month ago and i ur subs are great! yesterday i couldnt get a traingle on someone so i referred to the three points of death vid and pulled a teepee. He tappped in 1 second when i locked it in. My coach was impressed he hadnt taught me that yet
Thanks for the support everyone. We look forward to adding many more moves in both Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Nogi and self defense (Japanese Jujutsu). Roll On!
Congrats on the promotion to purple belt, Ari! I love how you were humble and patiently waited for the promotion even though your skill level is far above that of a blue belt. I love all the submissions101 tutorials and you have been a great help in all of your efforts to spread the information of all grappling arts to your viewers and eager students. Best of all... you're Canadian :P
@JimTheRacistTurtle I believe this is not a full blood choke because there is no pressure on Kaiser's right-side carotid artery. Ari applies the choke part with his right arm on Kaiser's left side. The interwoven wrists keep Matt's head from turning away from the partial choke.
it could do him in but the problem would be the fact that a street fight isn't a competitive fight. after he begs for mercy and taps the intro to hot for teacher (bad metaphore?) there's no telling if he'll get back up and hit you in the head with a beer bottle or pool cue. there's no honour in a pub.
@MrPhrogphurter You can do it but nogi being slippier makes it much easier for your back to be taken from this position. I personally avoid traditional scarfhold (kesa gatame) when doing no-gi.
Tried this the other day during a free rolling session. My training partner said it was tight but felt more like neck crank than a choke. He's a fairly big guy but I have no problem with the Paper-cutter on him, should I think of this like a paper-cutter w/ modified grip combined with arm triangle or is there some other aspect I should focus on? I'd rather get the choking aspect down than the crank, for safety reasons. Thanks heaps for posting this! Helps me convert my Judo to BJJ. Appreciated!
I notice that your weight is somewhat coming off of his body - if they chose to roll with you, would you finish this in the guard, or attempt to push them back down?
Everybody, if you type in Hiroyoshi Tenzan-Anaconda Cross on RUclips, press search or return or even click on the search button magnifying glass and click on the video that says Hiroyoshi Tenzan-Anaconda Cross to watch it, you will see a special hint. The Anaconda Cross is a variation on the Anaconda Vice where the opponent's other arm is also trapped as it is wrapped over the opponent's chest and pinned under the wrestler's arms.
So I see your right arm compresses his carotid artery, but what about the other one.. is it his shoulder? I'm just curious cause I know neck cranks are legal so long as you have a legitimate choke.. Just curious.. But I like this, I'm gunna add this in if they start to slip their arm out when I'm in scarf
In the vid you said it could be a crank or choke depending on depth. In the vid, would the choke come from having YOUR right arm on the side of his corodary, and his shoulder on his right? Just not sure understand the choke?
@Vanchee09 from the same position, you can convert to ude garami in a very effective way. grab the arm across your body and flatten it to the mat bend 90 degrees at the elbow. slip your inside foot under the humerous and bend your knee so that your calf is over the forearm. lift your thigh and keep your heel to the mat and it will cause tremendous pressure to the shoulder. i learned this move in judo so it'll be perfectly legal.
I've put this move on my brother countless times, he never could bite me. Punches are very weak from that position so if they manage to hit you it is ineffective, and they can't move their feet up high enough to cross your head. so your good plus the pain hurts
Hopefully this isn't a dumb question but is this a tap from pain like a neck crank. YES I do see the description and see it is part choke and part crank, but is it the pain from the both of these that solely causes the tap? IN LAYMAN'S TERMS, CAN YOU PUT A GUY TO SLEEP WITH THIS MOVE? THANKS IN ADVANCE!
I wonder if you could pull this off from an arm triangle. Example; suppose you go to sink in an arm triangle, but he defends against it by answering the phone. In that position, his arm is right that. Would it be possible to set up the anaconda vice from that position?
This is almost exactly like a headlock in wrestling, except we basicly just sink it in as tight as we can then squeeze like our lives depend on it, lol
well yes they are... kinda they are trained to take a fall and to do it so they dont take all the pain like if they fall on their back they extend there arms and legs to cushion them. 2years of experience
Yeah, but that's wrestling in general. Everybody that isn't named Brock Lesnar modifies their submission so they don't cause serious damage to their opponent.
woot ari is back! :D It feels like I haven't seen you on submissions 101 in about 5 years! i love this submission. I just wish there were more advanced submissions at to level mma. there's so many rear naked chokes or guillotines it's unfunny.
Biting is not legal in mma and bjj and neck cranks are illegal in bjj competetions altogether. In an mma bout I doubt he'd have the strength to punch when you you're full on cranking his neck like that add to the fact you're in a dominat position and he is on his back.
They are not trained to stop ALL of the pain, and maybe your 2 years of experience isn't enough. The slams still hurt a bit, bruising is still fairly common, and back pain is frequent. He said it was entertainment to someone that called wrestling fake. He was standing up against a person calling it fake. He's on your side, and it's funny that you are unable to recognize that. I like sentence structure, it makes for easier reading. Though I think you meant kumquat? Cumquad isn't a word.
@SelttikS Yeah I tried it today and it actually works perfectly, the choke is so fast he has no time to react... but it doesn't work on strong guys or guys who are sweaty.
@rabidbunnies2 This is called Kesa Ashi garami. I use it all the time - BJJ guys don't see it coming most of the time. I'm primarily BJJ but I cross-train in Judo and Freestyle Wrestling.
For the longest time I thought it was spelled Andaconda Vise. Also the guy in white looks like Neil Patrick Harris. And Hiroshi Tenzan innovated the move.
If only Punk made it to scarf position XD

I just thought this was another wrestling submission that looks good but wouldn't cause any harm in a real fight, glad to know I was wrong.
Well remember pro wrestling EVOLVED FROM CATCH WRESTLING. In fact pro wrestling is a STAGED form of catch wrestling. And catch wrestling was known for it PAINFUL SUBMISSIONS.

I love this kind of techniques, short, simple and veeeeeeeeery effective!
added to my favorites

Hmm interesting choke I'll be giving it a go this afternoon and discuss it with my master!
Very nice technique, effective in it simplicity. Thanks a lot ari, and congrats on the purple.
neat! I'm really digging the new gym decor. Very cool.
I was always told this move was pointless cause it didn't work as a good submission, now I see how it's applied correctly and can be done very well!
@Submissions101 Excellent video, Ari. Glad to see YOU back in the mix of them. Congrats on the purple!
Good to have you back ari!

Awesome, do glad to see Ari again- also keth owens attacks from mount is excellent

Cm punk!! Cm punk!! :D
Cool move. Nice to see another old-school sub101 format video.
Congrats on your purple belt Ari.
@SelttikS No because if he moves it'll hurt the arm.... That and it's to be done quick, don't give him a chance to do that
Now this is the Submissions101 I know and love!
@MrPhrogphurter You can do it but nogi being slippier makes it much easier for your back to be taken from this position. I personally avoid traditional scarfhold (kesa gatame) when doing no-gi.

It can hurt your neck and head as well.. Depending on how you do it, He said it in the video.
I notice that your weight is somewhat coming off of his body - if they chose to roll with you, would you finish this in the guard, or attempt to push them back down?

And it is downright brutal for a submission.
question is, is this legal in a bjj match? Seeing as you said its mostly a crank

Nice of getting all of the angles on this one

This will work great for me in Judo THANK YOU!!!
@jonztwn It is very effective, the only problem is that they can punch you with their free hand, but this puts them out fairly quickly
You should go over how you defend against it as well as defending the setup.
This is almost exactly like a headlock in wrestling, except we basicly just sink it in as tight as we can then squeeze like our lives depend on it, lol
Congrats on the purple belt! : D
OOOOOOHHH NOW IT MAKE SENSE !!!!!!!!! I was wondering how that move actually works when CM Punk did it.
well yes they are... kinda they are trained to take a fall and to do it so they dont take all the pain like if they fall on their back they extend there arms and legs to cushion them. 2years of experience
@Submissions101 How is big red doing? I liked watching the younger guys with potential.
@Submissions101 are there any japanese jujutsu moves that were applicable to rolling
Im going to try this in my rolls for sure
@gagoshay He got it from Hiroyoshi Tenzan in New Japan, who probably picked it up from some MMA fighters that worked New Japan.
Could this move be used in BJJ comps or would the ref look at it as too much of a crank?
Any chance on seeing a vid of you receiving your purple belt? :)
BEST IN THE WORLD!!!!!LOL
If he keeps moving and getting his hips close to yours wouldn't he release the pressure of the choke???
Very effective if you do it right. the person on the bottom will go to sleep
hey man. great move, could you potentially do this from the mount as well? maybe even when in someone's guard?
Awesome! Great tutorial, awesome quality!
Ari... do you have trouble with ppl bridging and rolling you when you try to go for the submission?
My favourite Submission hold! Always works!
BEST SUBMISSION IN THE WORLD!! XD
Anyway we could get a redux video of this same attack from either side control or mount (or both)?
I wonder if the Anaconda Vice can also be applied as a neck crank?
Tenzan!!
can you guys do the sharpshooter next
Yeah, but that's wrestling in general. Everybody that isn't named Brock Lesnar modifies their submission so they don't cause serious damage to their opponent.
thanks for the reply dude !!!!
woot ari is back! :D It feels like I haven't seen you on submissions 101 in about 5 years!
i love this submission. I just wish there were more advanced submissions at to level mma. there's so many rear naked chokes or guillotines it's unfunny.
is there a way to set this up cuz im sure the bottom guy isnt going to willy nilly give his arm up like that....
Is it legal in tournaments?
Probably not, one can argue that this is a choke, but it looks more like a neck crank to me.
It seems to me, the guy will try to rotate in the same direction and aboid the submission. Is that possible?
They can also bite your arm plus cross their feet on your head / neck.. Punch you with their free hand..how do you prevent this???
Biting is not legal in mma and bjj and neck cranks are illegal in bjj competetions altogether. In an mma bout I doubt he'd have the strength to punch when you you're full on cranking his neck like that add to the fact you're in a dominat position and he is on his back.
Very nice. But wow that looks really painful!
Does some pro wrestling moves really work in a real fight?
whats a good position to transfer to this submission from? after escape from half guard? side control?
@Sheggzz thanks you so much ;)
@RickMerchantttt Purple in 10th Planet (2007 ;-)
They are not trained to stop ALL of the pain, and maybe your 2 years of experience isn't enough. The slams still hurt a bit, bruising is still fairly common, and back pain is frequent.

perfect after you hit a ead and arm throw, thx!
@rabidbunnies2 This is called Kesa Ashi garami. I use it all the time - BJJ guys don't see it coming most of the time. I'm primarily BJJ but I cross-train in Judo and Freestyle Wrestling.
@jaguar004 of course! Like Cross ArmBreaker or dropkick! or Rock Bottom (check it!)
I tried it on my Dad, whos a marine veteran, and he said it hurt. And if a marine says it hurts, IT HURTS
could you tell me the order of the belts in jiu jitsu
Oooh this is CM Punk's move. Very very cool. Good job Submissions101 :)
The question is, does it hurt?
So when you shift it makes it tighter.
When you switch your base like that, couldn't the guy on bottom just sit up on you and roll you onto your back?
Some clarification please. Is this a blood choke, neck crank, or shoulder lock?
Looks like a neck crank to me.
love the vice for pro wrestling but not sure why you'd use it in a shoot fight. any advantage over just an arm triangle?
Far easier to set up.
not as common, people are less likely to know what is going on.
It seems very useful, many times people end in a situation like that.
For the longest time I thought it was spelled Andaconda Vise. Also the guy in white looks like Neil Patrick Harris. And Hiroshi Tenzan innovated the move.
what it he bite my right are and I don't want to release the hold?? (I will got a bit for sure_)
@GJJalltheway He is still around (Dan). I have several guys that help me. This is Matt Kaiser, one of my blue belts.
@MrPhrogphurter yep...as is the floating americana armlock which I will be uploading in a couple of days ;-)
Can u do this move in judo? I have a comp soon and I want to try this.
Who's here because he finally Googled the anaconda vice lock to check if it's an actual submission?
Should the grips in the figure four be monkey grips?
Ok but what I never got about this move is that the other guy's free hand can just punch you in the face repeatedly until you let it go.
I'm not understanding where the choke is actually coming from. Someone mind explaining it?
BEST IN THE WOOOOOOOORLD
Ure back won't be taken if you have his arm like that, he is pretty much at ure mercy until he can remove that lock on his arm.
@rhdadrian Ari is a black in JJJ, a purple in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and a blue in 10th Planet. This is a new video.
