Looks like he took a flap sheet and forged it himself. The holes in the sheet look hand-made. You can buy plastic by the sheet in various thicknesses. HDPE is the same plastic as used for gas cans. It is chemically resistant and shatter-resistant from puck impact. I use HDPE a lot for work and I can see it being used as a glove insert material.
