@@trav4oilers I wish I could homie, 2 hip replacements say otherwise lol, I am working my way back into skating slowly. I can still play up once I get back into shape and get my legs stronger. Been light skating with my grand kids. :)
I tested some pads last year vs my ol' leather straps...it's like 30% lighter or more depending on how old your leather goes. The material slides fast on the ice as well. Wasn't sure how I would like it on my first game. And it took like 3 games for me to see the benefits. But by the 6th or 7th game I played I was sold.
Awesome vid Trav, loved these! I’ve been using the baseball on the bottom of your foot trick for years and have told tons of people about it. So I can attest to the benefits! Might try fiddling with my strapping now tho, thanks!!
I’m curious to know how you get your positioning consistent. I tend to use the posts to orient myself to start but as soon as I start moving I start to lose my spot and that’s when I tend to let bad goals in where I wasn’t covering part of the net.
I know I’m not the same as a pro goalie but I play u14aaa and it just takes a bunch of reps to know where you are in the net but also I know some people that use land marks like the dots to know where the corner of the crease is and help find where they are in the net
Playing 5 days a week to build that familiarity with your angles where you subconsciously understand how to orient yourself with the dots/boards/posts (everyone loves to have a goalie at open hockey) works great (until you go play a tournament on olympic ice or some weird smaller rink and you get scored on far side from the half boards lol)

Good tips Trav. My Optik 3's are all Velcro so not much room for adjustability but it's fine. As far as danglers go I was going through 2-3 a year and I prefer the head mobility of no dangler & just try & tuck my chin on shots up high. Would it be insane to try playing goalie if you’re almost 15 and have been playing forward since you were 7? I really want to try for fun maybe at a practice but I’m scared I won’t like it.
2 hacks for you: 1. Dangler - I put some of those felt circles that go on the bottom of chairs on the inside of my dangler to remove the announce of the clanking it makes. 2. I've been doing the old water trick and leaving taped underneath something heavy for 24 hours. Did this a couple times. Always stiffens back up. Other than just use, do you have any other tips??
Thanks for watching Nolan, I'm gonna do a 2nd updated version of this in the summer and that'll be in it. Honestly I just wear around the house, put it in the bathroom with the shower as hot as it goes to steam it, and use it on ice. Best break in method
For the dangler trick I had broke like my 5th one in a season last year so I just stopped using one and I have a maltiese neck guard which is all foam so I don’t even notice it
Recently cut about 3 to 4 inches off the top of my stick (like Carey Price) and it made a huge difference for puck handling. My shot isn't quite as powerful but it's more accurate and much better for the 95 percent of the time goalies play the puck in shorter range.
For the style hack if you are wearing suspenders you can actually sow the clips they attach to on the inside of your pants, so that way they dont interfere with the jersey tuck
great job! just sub'sd this guy..very helpful vids...great to see a video on goalie skates sharpening? is it 3/8 or 1/2 the better cut for goalie skates? thanks
Switching to a Turco grip was huge for me playing the puck. I still suck, and I don't even think I can backhand it as I've never tried, but it's a game changer
Is there an advantage to shaving your stick vs just getting a stick with a shorter paddle? Any thoughts on sticks with asymmetric shoulders on the paddle (like the new True Catalyst 9X)? NB I’m only asking about the shape of the stick.

Little hack for your defender to gain a second against forecheck (when he’s behind the net). Move as far forward in your crease when the forchecker (opponent) rushes your defender it will make him decide whether to go left or right one second earlier and allow your defender to take the right decision.
@@booman3138 Happens to the best of us! I've got a series of giant purple bruises going down the length of my right arm from my most recent game. They are quite the conversation starter!
Hack that I use for probably 2 or 3 years now is putting the snow u get in the crease around the post. It has bailed me out of many wraps and bad bounces with the puck. Example I went behind the net to play it and it took a weird ass bounce off the Zam door. Bounced in such a way it could've just been a tap in goal but the snow came in clutch and stopped it behind the post
I started playing goal in the late 60s and things were so different.Never had to pay for my gear while flying.Things certainly have changed.Something I find interesting is besides the occasional broken finger and cuts,I got injured more playing baseball.I did have a few concussions but I never missed time due to that .Also our gear was like cardboard compared to modern stuff.I'm paying for the head injuries now however.
Hey thanks for watching kev. Game has def changed a lot since then. Goaltending and UFC MMA may be the 2 most technical sporting positions on the planet. The old cardboard gear is so timeless
I have been strapping my pads the same way for atleast the past 6 years! Tight on the calf and loose up towards the thigh rise. Helps the thigh rise come down and close that five-hole faster than my legs can hit the ice. Surprised to hear you take heat for that.
I read a interview with my favorite goalie of all time. This was during the 2000 playoffs. He said after every practice he would take 50 pucks and shoot forehand and 50 pucks backhand. I try and do this all the time. I admit 50 pucks is alot.
Beside the bungee cord I was doing all of these at 11 years old 15 years ago. No beef, I think all goalies should know this (and I should’ve kept at it lol) but I got to say I liked having the toe of my pillows secured so if my skate slipped off I could use my pad to push off the post or someone’s stick.
I am a newer goalie but I have a lot of skill and have had a lot of great games. I’m on the smaller side and a lot of the time players take advantage of that. What can I do to stop players from being able to take advantage of my size?
Wow lots of thing I did not know like the baggage thing was a wow to me. but the lacrosse ball I did know and I use it lots great vid trav when are you getting to Sweden Travel safe big guy and see ya in the next one
Seeing how recent this video is, I want to ask a question about the flight/baggage stuff: My leg pads DO fit in my bag, but wagering my gear all bagged up doesn't quite come in at >50lbs. If the leg pads are (plastic) bagged separate from your main bag, are they now _weight separately_ but still considered all _one piece_ of luggage for being sports equipment? If that's true, that's a handy hack, and I'm going to start bring my gear everywhere with me lol
Yeah, will definitely try some of these out. Although one thing. What’s everyone’s problem with danglers and neck guards? I mean, if you pay attention to them all the time, you’ll notice them, but if you aren’t constantly focusing on them you will have no idea they’re even there. I feel like they’re definetely worth the extra protection. The only place where I would sacrifice a little bit of security is with the mask, with a cheater cage. Not a cat-eye, because those can be easily noticed and has much more likelihood of something getting through, but definitely a cheater cage.
Whats an alternative to toe ties? If my laces are tied tight everything is disconnected and it strains everything but when they are longer my pads move around too much to the point its inconsistent. Help
Toe ties are the perfect hybrid my friend. I promise. Gives the feel of laces, without the wear and tear. There is a reason these are the most durable on the planet and countless NHL goalies are using pro laces. Hope this helps. Chat soon :) let me know if you got any more questions
@@trav4oilers hmm. The most important part is consistency, my ankle knee and hip health. And i want my pads to stay in place so when im on the ice it feels the same every time so i dont have to adjust. If this helps - im in and gonna need that link brotha💪
Always double check your checked bag tag. Kid on my college team was excited to be playing on his first road trip. They grabbed someone else's tag at the counter and put it on his bag by mistake. Ended up on the other side of the country and he missed the first game of the trip.
I don't even play hockey anymore.... and used to show up to the airport with my Dad.... BUT IF UR WATCHING THIS - THIS advice is literally priceless. Like yeah that's why i said 'literally' it doesn't cost you anything
It’s pretty incredible to see todays big goalies get down on the ice as flat as they do, it’s one thing for a 5’5” goalie to do it but a 6’5” goalie doing it is awesome….
I've got a new set of CCM R1.9 pads some time ago and i just cant figure out how to strap them. I've tried almost everything and i just cant seem to get the perfect fit. They always feel wiggly and loose, in worse cases my left pad doesnt even rotate back and gets stuck facing down. I'd appreciate some help because its really restricting my skating and mobility :(
If the pad gets stuck in the rotated position after you get up, it's usually because the boot of the pad is stuck on top of the skate. If you have a boot strap that goes through the rear of the skate or through the bottom of the skate, you'll want to loosen that strap because that is clamping the boot to the skate in the butterfly position. Other option is to remove it. Now, the pad should rotate back easily. If it's too loose, don't tighten the boot strap, tighten the lowest calf strap.
I feel like I should choke lower on my paddle, but I use a 27.5 (I'm 6ft without skates) but my 34+2 brians gentk 4 (probably too big) seem to be in my stomach when I try and get lower in stance. Low blocker is my kryptonite.. its sad, ive been a goalie almost 25 years, played in college and i still dont know how to wear my pads
Because the boy is getting looked at during a family trip the UK is that the hockey bag, sticks and pads need to equal 50lbs or is that hockey bag only equals 50lbs?
They're all supposed to equal 50 LBS but if the bag is 45 ish youre good. Prepay for your bags so they don't charge for 3 pieces. Hockey equipment is only 1 piece
My biggest hack is knowing how to get my head in the right space before and during the game. Different for everybody, but probably the best probability for success on the ice.

Glad it could help man, I'll have a new one coming soon :)

Full video tutorial coming on Wednesday
@@trav4oilers awesome ur my fav youtuber
hey trav what team do u play for
I play for the motor city rockers in the FPHL, outsidde detroit now
@@trav4oilers glad you love the sport and are on a team.
I am a newer goalie but I have a lot of skill and have had a lot of great games. I’m on the smaller side and a lot of the time players take advantage of that. What can I do to stop players from being able to take advantage of my size?
Challenge more and get your hands and shoulders in front and on top of pucks. Thanks for wathcing mnan
Do you have any tips on breaking in a glove? I’ve done most of the methods. But my Bauer gsx glove won’t close all the way.
Wear it around the house and use it man. Leave in the bath room when you shower so it steams. I got a glove break in video too. cheers
Thank you for the hacks, Trav :). Keep it up and NEVER give up!
Glad you're enjoying man,. thanks for watching ;)
Nice hacks Trav! Appreciate you sharing!
Appreciate you watching as always Irfan! You’re a regular brother and I love it
This is very helpful trav, thanks man
Glad I could help you brother. Thanks for watching buddy
Hey Trav, how do the pro laces compare to the active toe system on the warrior G4s?
Warrior laces are way too tight. I promise you these will change your game. If they don’t, I’ll refund you myself
Can you show how to make your chesty look bigger like vasilevskiy and make a video about chest protectors in general, I think they are very overlooked
What else do you wanna learn
Wow lots of thing I did not know like the baggage thing was a wow to me. but the lacrosse ball I did know and I use it lots great vid trav when are you getting to Sweden
Travel safe big guy and see ya in the next one
I leave for Sweden next month brother! Looking forward to it
Seeing how recent this video is, I want to ask a question about the flight/baggage stuff:
My leg pads DO fit in my bag, but wagering my gear all bagged up doesn't quite come in at >50lbs. If the leg pads are (plastic) bagged separate from your main bag, are they now _weight separately_ but still considered all _one piece_ of luggage for being sports equipment? If that's true, that's a handy hack, and I'm going to start bring my gear everywhere with me lol
Should be all one piece my friend!
Awesome hacks Trav ! Thanks
Thanks for watching as always brother
Yeah, will definitely try some of these out. Although one thing. What’s everyone’s problem with danglers and neck guards? I mean, if you pay attention to them all the time, you’ll notice them, but if you aren’t constantly focusing on them you will have no idea they’re even there. I feel like they’re definetely worth the extra protection. The only place where I would sacrifice a little bit of security is with the mask, with a cheater cage. Not a cat-eye, because those can be easily noticed and has much more likelihood of something getting through, but definitely a cheater cage.
I don't really focus on them that much. Also lets me play comfortably without a neckguard
Hay trav, what is the best Pantera song of all time? For me it is The Sleep, It has the best solos ever
Walk, or PuckOff. No doubt
Code Travsucks! Haha top shelf broski!!!!! Great vid man thx
Hey trav my brother is 9 and this is his first year. Do u got any tips?

Trav, do you use any wax/sticky stuff on your stick/tape?
Yes I do! I wax that bitch up
good vid ima start taping the blade like that
Hope it helps buddy!
@@trav4oilers yea it does lots more momentum time to get them goalie goals :D

Yes! Was awesome seeing ya last year brother!
#3!!! Yes - makes perfect sense - thanks :)
Hope it helps victor . thanks for watching ;)
for the first hack, someone in front of me had 50.08 lbs, so they opened up their suitcase and ate a bag of chips
Now that is how you save overage fees
Thanks for another sweet video. You should have blurred that TRUE-skate logo. 😉
Too late now! That footage is old
AF! Thanks for watching brother
Always double check your checked bag tag. Kid on my college team was excited to be playing on his first road trip. They grabbed someone else's tag at the counter and put it on his bag by mistake. Ended up on the other side of the country and he missed the first game of the trip.
Good tip. I always watch them tag my bags. That’s the best way to do it
I don't even play hockey anymore.... and used to show up to the airport with my Dad.... BUT IF UR WATCHING THIS - THIS advice is literally priceless. Like yeah that's why i said 'literally' it doesn't cost you anything
I have no idea what you're trying to say brother lol appellate the comment
It’s pretty incredible to see todays big goalies get down on the ice as flat as they do, it’s one thing for a 5’5” goalie to do it but a 6’5” goalie doing it is awesome….
Story of my life buddy, thanks for watching ;0
I've got a new set of CCM R1.9 pads some time ago and i just cant figure out how to strap them. I've tried almost everything and i just cant seem to get the perfect fit. They always feel wiggly and loose, in worse cases my left pad doesnt even rotate back and gets stuck facing down.
I'd appreciate some help because its really restricting my skating and mobility :(
Sometimes (I feel) the toe tie is the huge connection point that needs to be fixed. Hope that helps man
@@trav4oilers Ah okay then maybe a bungee toe tie would help. I'll try changing to them. Thank you:)
I appreciate this trav
I appreciate you as always brother
Loved the vid trav
Love you buddy!
Hey, only one suggestion: keep your stick on the ice idk wheather you like it or don’t but it is easier and i am doing it like that :)
Thanks for watching man
Ima C/LW am I'm watching a video on goalie tricks. Nice. That's where I am now.
Hope they help you brother
Some damn good hacks !
Where are yours
@@trav4oilers I just happened to get a GREAT video idea
Are you from sweden? I noticed that Haninge anchors and Flämingsberg was in the video.
Nope, I'm from canada but I would consider myself a Swede :)
I feel like I should choke lower on my paddle, but I use a 27.5 (I'm 6ft without skates) but my 34+2 brians gentk 4 (probably too big) seem to be in my stomach when I try and get lower in stance. Low blocker is my kryptonite.. its sad, ive been a goalie almost 25 years, played in college and i still dont know how to wear my pads
hope the paddle shaving can help you with choking up on the paddle! :)
We added just a small piece of foam tape above the laces on the corners of the dangler to my son's helmet so it doesn't clang as loudly.
I've heard that one before!
I went to Finland and my gear ended up not making it for a week. I was pissed.
What airline you go with
@@trav4oilers Flew Lufthansa Toronto to Germany and then Germany to Helsinki. My gear got lost in Germany but my clothes made it fine.
@@trav4oilers thanks bud 👍🏾
it’s nice lightning won back to back but more happy vasiy won the conn smythe
What a stud
He should have won the Vezina too.
Price should have won it, more shots , more tougher shots, weaker team what a stud 💪
My biggest hack is knowing how to get my head in the right space before and during the game. Different for everybody, but probably the best probability for success on the ice.
This ain’t helping but I think you have or you don’t, idk. Just my 2 cents
@@trav4oilers Eh, I think what he means is blocking out life and concentrating on the game.
Not gonna lie suspenders were a game changer for me, kinda makes the jersey tuck impossible but man do i love em
What’s the point of you
Don’t look sick?
