It’s too bad they didn’t send any expansions, those would have probably made it better for you, they add swarms of tiny bee marbles you pour everywhere and snake marbles and a tiger you launch at people from the table and a whole other island with a sunken ship that has more treasure but also a crow’s nest with cannonballs that spill everywhere. It’s definitely more chaotic when you add some of that stuff!

    • @adamolij7444

I have a friend who owns a copy of the original Fireball Island, and I've played it a few times relatively recently, so I'm in a decent position to compare Curse of Vul-Kar with the original _without_ Nostalgia Goggles or ancient marketing hype. The original was _also_ somewhat cheaply made - the Island was vacuum-molded from fairly thin plastic - so this version actually looks equivalent in manufacturing quality, if not _very slightly_ better. Gameplay-wise, this looks like an improvement in nearly every aspect - the original has its moments of tension and backstabbing treachery, but was _mostly_ a linear dice-rolling race with a few strategic decisions to make along the way, and the occasional loop of multiple players being repeatedly knocked back to the same location. CoVK seems _much_ more open-ended, with more branching paths and tactical decisions. Vul-Kar seems less threatening, I agree, being rotated only through card-play rather than at-whim and with the Fireballs being semi-randomized to three paths, leading to "Fireballs that roll and do nothing". On the other hand, being able to flick the Embers in _any_ direction (not just along predefined paths) makes them more interesting as threats. The Scar end-game counter seems like a nice PvE mechanic, to keep an open-ended game like this from dragging on indefinitely, and adding another risk-reward element to spending too many turns wandering after treasures and snapshots. All together, this seems like a game with "simple rules", but with potentially deeper gameplay than its predecessor.

I would like to point out a glaring rules mistake, concerning how each character plays. They are NOT the same. After watching Shut Up and Sit Down play Fireball Island, I could only conclude that the Green character is Oddjob levels of extreme overpoweredness. His lower center of gravity gives him a hidden perk of a 5% chance of surviving being hit by a marble.
I am developing a variant to fix this. Players will first draft their character pieces, and then they will receive X dollars, and then they will auction the character piece they chose to the other players. The auction will be an innovative mix of Modern Art, Twilight Imperium, and Redneck Life. To compensate for turn order, I am also adding rules for controlling the Hello Copter by a player, by adding an 18XX style stock market shares system to control different Hello Copter companies. I believe these fixes will make the game extremely balanced, and worthy of constant tournament play.

An interesting thing you could do is permanent damage - any part of the island that gets knocked over or displaced doesn't get fixed.
Would make more sense too lol. Does Vul-Kar have a repair crew on standby or something?
Would also be nice to have more unstable spaces - seems there's only 3, and 2 of them are rather close to each other.

I played the original fireball island when I was a kid. I played the new version recently with my adult friends. My assessment is the new version is not for kids under 12 years old. The new version is really for adults. The original is easy to play, simple to understand and the gameplay is linear. The new version has to many rules to remember, a nonlinear map, new components and a point system to win. As an adult, we still got confused with some of the rules so we played using a simplified house rules, which made it more fun to play.

This was the second board game Kickstarter that I backed and I was not disappointed. This has easily become one of my favorite board games of all times. Just simple, fast and fun. The expansions incorporate really well too. Highly recommend it!
EDIT: After watching the rest of the video, I highly recommend trying it again if you ever get to play with some or all of the expansions. They all add more chaos to the game and one adds a completely new island board to traverse. Other smaller expansions add specific powers to each player that makes each player feel a bit more different and unique. Just a heads up in case you get to play this again with some of the expansions.

Welp, I'm 36 and did grow up with the original and actually repurchased the original (complete) for about 200 bucks, several years ago. Also, I love that this new edition is a love letter to old school gents such as myself.
Having said all that, I agree with a lot of your review. This is in fact at its core, a kids game. Very simplistic in its way, and as a kid, this game was GOD. But to remake it for modern times, knowing a newer more sophisticated audience would be playing, maybe more was needed? The expansions perhaps address this.
Also this remake redesigns the board and introduces treasure cards, the one ladder, treasures, the helicopter, a point system, multimouth Vulkar, new cards and effects, trees, some rules, and a few other things... all which are not a part of the original. The original is much more straight forward, capture the jewel and escape the island, win. All the while you dodge cards and fireballs!
Anyway, for those with nostalgia I imagine you'll love this remake, and for those curious. But beyond that, I fear others will find the gameplay a bit too shallow.
And I agree, they sould have went all in with traps! The expansions somewhat fill this void.
Also, Forbidden Bridge, It From The Pit, and Crash Canyon are similar games in overall style. I actually use to use my Forbidden Bridge as an expansion to FI lol. Yeah, I was pretty hardcore into this scene for a minute.
Might I add, play this or the original with alcohol, everytime somebody gets fireballed, take a sip. Add island music playing in the backround and good friends in semi-beach attire and wham, good times.

This is NOT a game made for kids. I agree that it's mostly just geared to people in my gen x/millenial range who played this as kids. It's too complex, with multiple objectives to be a kid's game. I think at best this game would be fun for player 12 and over. Whereas the original game was really fun for 7-12 year olds, with much simpler rules, more durable pieces and a clear objective for everyone to go after.
Full disclosure, I had the original game growing up and have played it a few times recently at my parents house. I was really excited for this game to come out and bought two in the kickstarter campaign. I was really excited to share this with my kids. But overall I've been very disappointed and honestly no one wants to play this game the last two years. They really missed with this game. They took the Fireball Island name and a few of the aspects of the old game, but changed almost everything else. I think they would have been better off to just try to re-create the original.

I wish I could remember the name of it but I swear growing up I had a game very similar to this but it was space-themed and it was all craters and asteroids and stuff.

@@blues713317 it took some digging but I finally found it! The game I played was called Rescue from Planet Zero. I think it was basically a Fireball Island clone with some math problems thrown in haha. Was the one you were thinking of called The Omega Virus, by chance?

I remember this game when I was a kid. I've never played this ever. I thought all you do in this game was roll marbles on the board. I didn't know it was this complicated.

You know, there is about 3 r 4 expansions for this game that enhances the game. Adds more things. Would love to see a review made with the exceptions added.
