I just got my copy from kickstarter... the original really doesn't age well. Playing it now, nostalgia doesn't help... but here, it's a lot different. Mechanics are changed, and it's more dynamic and fast-paced, with a little more strategy than luck (as the original was). Personally, I love it.

Remember that when the Heart of Vul Kar is first picked up by any player, you add a red marble to the scar.

Thank you for the review. I've been looking at this in my local game shop, and I will be adding it to my collection.

I'd never heard of this in the 80s. But the style of it is very typical of 80s games so I can see why people would feel nostalgic playing it.

Racing to capture the jewel and then the thrill of the chase to get off the island without it being stolen is what I loved about the original Fireball Island. Those pieces are gone in the new version. I absolutely love how the new game looks, but I was hoping for some sort of enhancements to those original aspects of the game. Might have been fun to incorporate a second set of rules where you could also play a variation closer to the original game as well?

Yes, I agree. The new game just doesn't seem to have enough penalty for getting fireballed (lose one treasure and then you GET a souvenir?). In the original game you lost a turn.
We've played through the new game twice, and still haven't gotten the rules exactly right. I do think it might be a little too complicated for some.

It looks like an amazing game with nice 3d models and actual reaction you can see on the "island" so visual aspect are interesting as for the gameplay it look not that bad :) Nicely done review for an outstanding original game.

Thanks for the review. I was really overwhelmed when I first got it because the instructions are a bit vague and doesn't cover all variables. Even harder my 1st time because I was playing 2 players. Cant wait to give it another go.

You did a great job explaining how the game is played. Thanks.

Great review! Got my kickstarter copy! Did you boost saturation in this vid? My copy of the Island is nowhere near as vibrant in colors as this one appears.

I am curious as to how this looks to those without the benefit of nostalgia. It certainly looks pretty and I want to try it out, just not necessarily buy it myself.

My big disappointment is the quality of the island... It's the same cheap egg plastic from the '86...
That was the biggest flaw of the original and they don't changed it?
    Big mistake.
