Also, no mention of Second Hand Lions or 7 Days in Utopia or Sling Blade. He's had a huge body of work, hard to cover everything. But Lonesome Dove should not have been overlooked.
I am so grateful for the many hours of enjoyment watching anything Robert Duvall has done. I am very sincere when I say I would watch, and enjoy, him reading the phone book.
Yes, Duvall is the most UNDERATED ACTOR in entertainment. Just a NATURAL! He's believable in any role he has played. Unfortunately the "minimal talent" Hollywood "TRIBE" run the show and the Duvalls keep showing real talent. Tha.nkyou Robert. Many blessings to you and yours. Gennaro
My very favorite actor of all time. He brings "the character" and puts life in every part he has played. I have had the pleasure of watching his genius for 8 decades. A Hollywood Legend.
I saw The Great Santini a couple years ago and thought it was exceptional. His son in that movie deserved an acting award! Then I learned he was in Apocalypse Now but I didn't know he was in so many other movies I've yet to see... A great actor!
Absolutely - and I couldn't find Lonesome Dove anywhere in the video, except for a tiny piece of the 'nose-busting' scene, with the back of Tommy Lee Jones's head!
Well done Robert, nobody could have got even close the part he played in Open Range with Kevin Costner. Amazing film with some brilliant acting by all.
During production of "Lonesome Dove", Duvall needed help with the West Texas accent. The director arranged a meeting with Sammy Baugh, legendary Washington Redskin quarterback. He got the accent immediately.
I love, love, love Robert Duvall. He is a character that I would love to just have a conversation with. Every movie of his I have seen repeatedly. I recently introduced my husband to Second Hand Lions. That movie is his new favorite. My black lab’s name is Boo Radley. ☮️💜 much respect and love to Mr. Duvall. To Kill a Mockingbird is my all time favorite.
I had a father much like Duvall.....I'm glad I had him for a Dad...it's really helped me in life. Every time I think I can't do something all I have to do is ask myself what Pop would do.
As a retired Marine, the Great Santini has always stuck with me. I guess I was a bit like the father with my son, but not quite as harsh. It’s hard to switch off from work when you come home. I finally learned to switch off on my drive home. As a Marine, you are required not to accept disorganization which doesn’t mesh very well with kids and a family. The saying goes “If the Corps wanted you to have a family, they would issue you one”. Plus I was always deployed somewhere in the world. I still made mistakes that I have always been sorry for to this day. My kids grew to be great adults though. I don’t hear from them anymore! They all live thousands of miles away in New Zealand. Robert Duvall will always be an acting icon to me. May he enjoy a peaceful rest of his life.😊
@@gud2go50 God bless you, sir. Thank you for your service. I’m sure your children and grandchildren love you despite the distance. One of my roommates married a career Marine. Their two daughters are grown with children now.
He's done so many great performances; Open Range, Deep Impact, Broken Trail, Second Hand Lions and Lonesome Dove. His versatility is pretty astounding.
Thanks. I think these videos get paid for length or amount of words, constantly repeating elements. I love Robert Duvall, but so much of this is repetitive.
@ms8596 I wouldn't be surprised if the length of the video has an effect on payment. The longer a video is, the more opportunity to insert commercials. China had to enact a law preventing mini-series from having more than 40 episodes. Writers were dragging out the dramas to 50, 60 episodes and longer for product placement. I watched one drama and began laughing every time someone thought they were getting a cold because every character would reach for the same product on their desk, coffee table, kitchen and so on. There wasn't one character who didn't get sick for 24-hours.
Yes Second hand lion is my favorite too. My wife and I had the opportunity to chat briefly with Robert at one of the charity events in his ranch. Very down to earth and easy to talk with. A real gentleman.👏👏👍👍
His cameo appearance in the movie"sling blade" was a weird, crazy thing, 'I aint got no boy, i aint got no boy'. Carl's words were 'i come back here to kill you, but u keep a siiring in that chair, and you'll be dead soon enough!!!!
Falling Down was one of the greatest sleeper movies ever made. As a member of the Aerospace work force in Los Angeles at the time, it was especially poignant for me. I had been laid off from McDonnell Douglas a year prior to the films debut. I saw an interview years ago about the film. Duvall said that originally, Douglas’ character in the movie was “a normal work-day-guy that was just down on his luck and through a series of unfortunate events, loses it and goes on the rampage depicted in the film. The director had an epiphany and decided to graft in the element of emotional unstability to Douglas character, adding the scenes with his mother, the wife and child being estranged, with a restraining order, etc etc. it makes me wonder what the film would have been like… and if I would have enjoyed more (or less) than the version that was released.
YES!!! OH SUCH An excellent movie. And I loved Farrah Fawcett in it too, he chose her perfectly for that character. Her timing and nuances fit to a T her character.
I can't imagine what would have possibly made Robert Duvall think he should be paid the same amount as Al Pacino in Godfather III. The entire trilogy was essentially about Michael Corleone, and Pacino played him incredibly well. Duvall did a decent job of playing Tom Hagen, but Hagen was a far more minor character. The two roles were nowhere near in the same league.
It had nothing to do with the roles each of them played in the Godfather.., although I think you’re minimalizing the importance of Duvall’s character. Pacino had just made his first film debut the year prior to his being cast as Michael in the Godfather. Duvall on the other hand, had been in a slew of films, starting with the outstanding To Kill A Mockingbird a decade prior. As such Duvall was a proven veteran, well known talent and his name being on the film drew audiences, as did the other veterans of the cast, not to mention Marlon Brando. The only reason that Pacino was chosen for the role of Michael is that Coppola insisted on casting Pacino in the role. The studio had seen James Caan’s screen test for Sonny and while He had already been given that role by Coppola, the studio actually liked Caan’s test enough to re-cast him as Michael. It was Coppola who stood his ground and insisted that the role of Michael be given to Pacino. The studio’s attempted intervention probably had a lot to do with the fact that Pacino was largely unknown and unproven as a leading man. Coppola was obviously right in his conviction, as Pacino’s portrayal was sublime. But to the point, Duvall was an established veteran and wanted his due. I don’t think that He asked for too much, considering. Many primadonna actors of the time (think Paul Newman, Steve McQueen) would have demanded far more.
You should have spoken more of his portrayal of Gen. Robert E. Lee in _Gods and Generals,_ besides briefly flashing a still from that movie neat the end.
Why oh why did you show a picture of Mildred & Richard Loving while talking about how different his parents were? They were NOT a mixed race couple. Please correct that, it is very jarring.
Don't take me wrong because I love Robert as a actor and will watch anything he is in and enjoy it. BUT. I am a little in disbelief of this when it comes to his only 1 year of service in the military. When most men had either 2 or 3 years at this time. Why did he only serve 1 year? Was it because of his dad's time of service and pull in Washington? It makes me question it for sure.
He made the best Vietnam War scenes. In Apocalypse Now. Staff Sargent Barnes, Animal Mother but first is Lt. Colonel Bill Kilgore. If you don’t know of these 3 characters then you aren’t American.
People who have learned how to act well enough to get paid for doing so while doing so before or sooner or later often realize they can do nothing without the Lord while hoping both they and nobody around them there is going to grieve the holy spirit to cause chaos.
While this is an interesting subject, I stopped watching these videos when it became apparent that the creator was too lazy to coordinate pertinent visuals with the narrative.
The Outfit, a 70's gangster movie with Duvall as the inmate who gets released early on compassionate grounds because his younger brother gets murdere*. Duvall decides to get even by hitting the mob, with ever increasing violence and expense to mob boss Robert Ryan in his last role. A host of very well known actors are in this and it is brilliant, similar to Point Blank and Payback, but superior to both. It was on Dailymotion last I looked.
Like Duvall, I have been married several times and had no children. I was told that because I had Mumps as a children rendered me infertile. Perhaps this is what happened to Mr. Duvall.

Of everything he's done Secondhand Lions and Lonesome Dove are definitely my favorites.
How can anyone do a retrospective on Robert Duvall’s career and not mention his superb portrayal of Augustus McCray in Lonesome Dove?!!
I kept waiting for his role as Gus in Lonesome Dove, a movie I have watched over and over through the years and nada! What the heck???
Also, no mention of Second Hand Lions or 7 Days in Utopia or Sling Blade. He's had a huge body of work, hard to cover everything. But Lonesome Dove should not have been overlooked.
No one else could have been Augustus McCray.
Lonesome Dove one of the Best Westerns of all time
Totally Agree!
I am so grateful for the many hours of enjoyment watching anything Robert Duvall has done. I am very sincere when I say I would watch, and enjoy, him reading the phone book.
He has your number! He got mine too!
One of the very best character actors of all time. I love every movie he has made.
Our best living actor.

And, 2nd hand lions. I Love that movie ❤

Fine man, fine actor. Good health to you, as well, good sir - I'm sure RD has enriched your life as much as he has mine.
I saw The Great Santini a couple years ago and thought it was exceptional. His son in that movie deserved an acting award! Then I learned he was in Apocalypse Now but I didn't know he was in so many other movies I've yet to see... A great actor!
The Great Santini's son went on to become the great Danny Noonan, of Caddyshack fame.
SURELY you've seen Lonesome Dove? He considers it his American Shakespeare role. It has weathered the time like all master pieces do.
Lonesome Dove would not even be remembered if not for the lovable philosopher "Augustus McCrea." "We Don't Rent Pigs"
Cant see how they could leave this out. He was outstanding.
Absolutely - and I couldn't find Lonesome Dove anywhere in the video, except for a tiny piece of the 'nose-busting' scene, with the back of Tommy Lee Jones's head!
Duvall’s performance was extraordinary. Saw it twice...And just loved it even more!
Hire a human narrator please. It doesn’t know the difference from being a lead actor or a lead weight
Either that or edit better. It's like nobody listens to the final product for mistakes.
I know. I caught the lead/lead mispronunciation. Thanks for the comment.
HA! HA! HA! Great point!
Well done Robert, nobody could have got even close the part he played in Open Range with Kevin Costner.

Tender Mercies is Duvall's greatest role. Check out his final soliloquy regarding happiness. Exquisite acting.🏆
An awesome actor. Loved i n best in Lonesome Dove ❤
I had a father much like Duvall.....I'm glad I had him for a Dad...it's really helped me in life. Every time I think I can't do something all I have to do is ask myself what Pop would do.
you touched me here. I hope you are a father too as you would be able to pass down these wonderful virtues your own father passed onto you.
Duvall, one of my favorite Actors . . . From Westerns, to Comedies, to everything else!
I'm 84 yo, (1942). I can't imagine my life without my 3 kids and grankids! I don't think I could bear it!

Augustus McCray was his masterpiece ❤
I just love Robert Duvall.
Spoiler Alert: It's "The Great Santini."
Awe man, you spoiled it for me…, but thank you for allowing me to be able to cut my viewing short. Awesome movie, and acting…
Thanks. I came to the comments just to find this!!!

He was great in, “ let’s give him something to talk about”.😊😊
You forgot Second Hand Lions, With Michael Caine.
One of my most favorite movies! Thank you for mentioning it!
Yes Second hand lion is my favorite too. My wife and I had the opportunity to chat briefly with Robert at one of the charity events in his ranch. Very down to earth and easy to talk with. A real gentleman.👏👏👍👍
@ oh my goodness, how fortunate you and your wife were!
This was a great movie!
In my mind Duval's most memorable role will always be Augustus McCray, Texas ranger.
Hate the computer narration. Editing is all screwed up!
His cameo appearance in the movie"sling blade" was a weird, crazy thing, 'I aint got no boy, i aint got no boy'. Carl's words were 'i come back here to kill you, but u keep a siiring in that chair, and you'll be dead soon enough!!!!
Boo Radley…he was the essence of the character in the novel. This was a magnificent portrayal without lines…Boo Radley.
"Miss Jean Louise, Mr. Arthur Radley. I believe he already knows you." Nine minutes on screen, no lines, but without him there is no story.
Duval is the best.
I loved him as playing "Gus", in the best movie ever LONESOME DOVE.
Robert Duvall was great in the movie Falling Down in 1993
Falling Down was one of the greatest sleeper movies ever made. As a member of the Aerospace work force in Los Angeles at the time, it was especially poignant for me. I had been laid off from McDonnell Douglas a year prior to the films debut.

Can’t stand computer generated narrations.
And how about second hand lions
I like all his western movies
As soon as I heard his father had been a career military man I knew exactly which role it had been.
Loved The Apostle
Robert's a great actor and an amazing human being.
I loved him as the doctor in Phenomenon, with John Travolta. A role with so much heart.
The Great Sandinista is my favorite movie of all of his movies. It hit way too close to home for me. Great actor!
‘The Paper’… Excellent film.
Great cast too.
Didn’t see Tender Mercies listed. Excellent film.
Yep, as far as I am concerned his best film. The one for which he received the best actor Oscar in 1983.
He does a great job in a night in old Mexico
I have watched it three times
I loved him in THX 1136! Great sci fi movie!!,
What about his winning an academy award for his leading role in the movie"tender mercies"?
He is a icon love his acting
He forgot Where Eagles Dare, with his good old Mate Michael Caine.
Doncha mean "The Eagle Has Landed"? "Where Eagles Dare" was Clint Eastwood and Richard Burton.
@dpbeardslee yes Mate, very true, cheers for correcting me 👍
Think my favorite movie though ,is secondhand lions.
A good production on the whole. Don’t, pls, put up ads for future programs a minute before the program is done. Is annoying and cheapens you.
He was awesome in Colors with Sean Penn.
Liked him in "Bullet" as the cab driver.
The Apostle 👍👍👍👍👏👏👏❤️

Excessive redundancy!
It pads the video length out for more $ revenue.
...I liked him as Boo Radley...
This video was painful to sit thru.
Seems his early family life was an inspiration to how he played in The Great Santini
2:53 I didn't know that Robert Duvall became Elvis. That really is a stretch
5:37 "Led" roles. Get areal human to narrate your videos.
This is one of the worst edited videos I have ever seen.
Why is his “admiral father” wearing a Marine Corps officer’s uniform complete with Marine Corps awards and decorations? Just asking😂
Photos and narrative do not match.
I kept reevaluating the disconnect.
Why oh why did you show a picture of Mildred & Richard Loving while talking about how different his parents were? They were NOT a mixed race couple. Please correct that, it is very jarring.
He a great job in Mississippi burning
Can't recall him in Popeye.

Is this presentation actually meant for a fourth grader? The “unseen” should also be the “ unheard”.
He regrets the role of LtCol Bull Meecham in The Great Santini. It reminded him of his father who was a USN Rear Admiral.
He made the best Vietnam War scenes. In Apocalypse Now. Staff Sargent Barnes, Animal Mother but first is Lt. Colonel Bill Kilgore. If you don’t know of these 3 characters then you aren’t American.
Why does this guy always throw scenes that have no relevance to what he’s saying. And nothing to do with Duvall
People who have learned how to act well enough to get paid for doing so while doing so before or sooner or later often realize they can do nothing without the Lord while hoping both they and nobody around them there is going to grieve the holy spirit to cause chaos.
That was ROBIN WILLIAMS playing Popeye!!🙄
And Robert Duvall did not receive an Oscar nomination for the Redford starrer, "The Natural"!🤦🏼♂️
One of the best actors ever Daniel Day Lewis The Best
Falling Down, as Michael Douglas adversary.
The information you provided was more than acceptable, however having the pictures presented not fit the narrative was quite a distraction.
Why no mention of [made for TV] Lonesome Dove? While it was McMurtry ' 'fictionaiazation' of history, it was memorable role, and enjoyable watching.
Very poor documentation. Get it right or don’t do it
Picture of his father shows him in Marine corps Major and in dress greens.
YOU USED A CLIP OF Duvall's Daughter with actor Robin Williams .... NOT Robert ! Get your facts straight.
While this is an interesting subject, I stopped watching these videos when it became apparent that the creator was too lazy to coordinate pertinent visuals with the narrative.

Um, the "US Navy Admiral" is wearing a Marine Corps uniform, Brigadier (one star) General in rank.
Photos do not match text. I even saw Elvis. Very distracting.
Get to the point!
Totally agree
The Godfather role is memorable. I thought he was referring to the Kamala ad?
Sorry. Wanted to watch, but I just don't do Stephen Colbert. Seeya.
When did billy bob become ruduy guilianai?😅
