i use the smallrig rod clamp to mount the lidar just underneath the lens. Remove the cold shoe mount from the lidar and screw the lidar onto the rod clamp. Works perfectly!
Here's my issue with that process.. and any advice on this would be great! Obviously the LiDar calibration process for each lens is somewhat lengthy, definitely too lengthy to be carrying out each time you rig up your camera set up. So, since you have to input the distance between the front of the LiDar and the camera's sensor, how can you be sure that distance hasn't changed when using a smallrig rod/magic arm (I think that's what it's called) when mounting it. Because the distance it's literally measured down to the millimeter, and I noticed previously that if the distance you put in to the system originally is even slightly off the next time you rig up your camera, it completely throws off the autofocus pulling and the whole thing doesn't work properly. Currently I'm using a RED V-Raptor and I'm mounting the LiDar using the hot shoe mount (hot shoe? cold shoe? can never remember which way round they are haha) that comes with the LiDar, with a cold shoe screwed in to the V-Raptor, as it's the only way I can ensure the distance between the LiDar and the camera sensor never changes. However I'm aware this isn't completely ideal as it leaves the LiDar pretty far from the lens, and for better, more accurate results it needs to be closer. Apologies for the long-winded explanation, but any guidance on this would be very much appreciated!
After sending that comment I've gotten further into the video and realised he actually touches on this issue also! Haha but yeah, still seems to be no solution unless you just remeasure the distance each time which is extremely inconvenient and would put me off using it entirely.
@ConorMaynard I now have my LiDAR mounted directly to my top handle on a rail and when I want to rig it and do something else I swap out the top handle for a different one that way when I go back to using the LiDAR all I have to do is put the top handle back on. For just using Lidar AutoFocus without the Active Track moving the gimbal, you have to be in WIDE mode, not Flex Spot mode. I've just done a test and it was able to keep me in focus, even if I moved to the sides of the frame without moving the gimbal at all. Interested if you've still had a different experience?
@@AlterEgoCreates okay? Shane checked it and you are correct. It does have a basic face tracking in wide mode. Shane says that this is close to what he is wanting but not quite the same as the handle allows you to lock onto faces rather than just let the AF do what it wants . It also doesn’t have the ability to tweak the stinkiness nor can you take over the focus like you can with the handle
@@TheFilmGuyOfficial Yea fair enough. Not perfect but doable. I need to test with multiple people but I think in wide mode, you roll the wheel and it'll select and stick to the one you specify. *I think* that's how it works, even if you don't hit the trigger which would initiate active track. How sticky is the V2 LiDAR-enabled ActiveTrack in low light. In theory, LiDAR-enabled auto-tracking would work in the dark, making tracking reliable in variable and poor light. How has your low-light experience been?
The LiDar might be able to see well in low light, but the built-in camera used for subject tracking is still a camera with a small sensor. Not really sure how low-light you're looking for but it's been mostly fine in the situations I've used it in.
@@ShaneVanLitz Thanks - I bought it and did what ZERO RUclipsrs have done -- test how low the light has to go before this $700 LiDAR / visible light camera unit fails to track. So far it's not very good for an expensive unit. If the gimbal tracks a subject who steps into darkness and back into light, or walks behind a barrier, or is covered by another human, this "Pro" tracking unit immediately loses the subject and aborts tracking, or starts tracking the wrong person, and someone has to intervene, which is counter to the purpose of automated tracking. Why abort? why not just wait and re-acquire when ActiveTrack sees the recognized subject again? The system is "dumber" than I thought. I'm stuck using it on an RS4 Pro, but I certainly wish it were better.
@@ShaneVanLitz FYI, I looked into Apple's version of active track (DockKit). First gimbal to use it is Insta360 Flow Pro. I bought and tested at a job -- and TL;DR -- a $150 gimbal with DockKit is FAR better at tracking than DJI's $700 unit. Not promoting, just really surprised. It tracks in extreme low light, tolerates people walking in front of the subject, and tolerates objects obscuring the subject. And when it loses the subject -- unlike DJI's "LiDAR-enhanced" pro tracking -- it simply WAITS and then re-acquires the subject without user intervention, whereas DJI's best product gives up/aborts.

Clearly, I won't EVER trust any youtubers doing "early reviews" of product. I own a Focus Pro that has loads of qwirks and problem, glitches that were never ever mentionned by any of them. The double check and glitch of calibration is a real pain and a software non sense. Some you seems to not have experienced are problem when shooting someone close to lens (2-3 meters) while loads of people are behind. The Lidar just freaks out and can't lock onto the person in front. Focus Pro can't focus on faces only and freaks out when you have someone among cars or people or both. A s for the Battery solution, this shows how much the RS4 Pro is a joke as the RS3 Pro is exactly what the RS4 Pro does. And the retrocompatibility of previous lidar with the RS4 PRO is not properly working either... It feels like a preprod unit. The Lidar is so power hungry that it shows that a new Ronin system with interchable battery without needing to break down the set up is needed without going to an R2. RS2/RS3/RS4 are just little step upgrades without much added to them. A fresh up is needed for bigger Ronin setup than the typical FX3 / G Master configuration without getting a heavy and expensive R2. On the plus side, the hand grip when set up to control Zoom with one motor is freaking great, the haptic feedback change the feel of the wheel to act as a "broadcast like" zoom rocker. It feels million times better than a Tilta Nucleus M.
Not to defend RUclipsrs but they are in a weird position where they are expecting firmware updates to come within days. Usually the companies tell them that this is happening so they are not mentioning bugs. They think they’re going to be fixed because it would be irrelevant if they are fixed by the time the product comes out and to make the product look bad when it may not be the case. It’s a shame things aren’t fixed
I can’t say I’ve had that issue with the close focus, but I haven’t been in that exact situation yet! You should make a video showing an example. In terms of the other things he mentioned I think we covered them later in the video . And yes, I think the motor on this unit is actually quite good so it feels like a very decent focus motor
@@TheFilmGuyOfficial True that youtubers are in a weird spaces, and the firmware beta / test is a bummer. Things need to change and that's start on the brand and communication plan from the companies, not the youtubers. Look at the launch of the Z6 III from Nikon: They use influencers in their own campains and pay them for it, use their images and that's it. Then influencers can talk or not on this gear without obligations. Then later you can have tech reviewer or real users of final product sharing their though on the product. It's less hype and more transparent content. About close focus bug, it's not really close focus. Just imagine that you are following (walking backwards) to shoot someone in crowded area. Even if the the crowd is pretty far away from the subject the lidar will start to change subject and start to select the people behind your subject then you subject again and again.
waaaaaaaiiiiit!!!! so if you shoot solo, when you connect the lidar to the RS4, as a solo shooter you can't operate the RS4 anymore? the lidar is the unit that control the ronin? if so, thats just a no no. so you can only use the ronin when you have a focus puller? then you can just hire a focus puller instead of using the lidar. soooooooo as a solo shooter the handheld unit is what you need otherwise the lidar is useless?
@@TheFilmGuyOfficial I have a 2nd question, is it possible to use the lidar on a photons? because all I see are cine lenses. do you guys maybe know if its possible to use on a photo lens?
@@LTULOfficial it only works with lenses that have hard stops for the focus! I have a friend who has used it with his modded photo lenses, but the mod includes hard stops!
@@LTULOfficialyes, you can use the lidar with photo lenses but only officially with some Panasonic cameras and the experience doesn’t seem ideal (focus pulls stutter). You may have luck with stills lenses with gears strapped on but I really wouldn’t recommend it at all.

There are much, much more issues than this review has, like loosing stored profiles and having to re-calibrate each battery swap when being powered from d-tap or v-mount, to name a rather big one. Wrong readings when using zoom on calibration is another one. It does seem like the demand for this one is huge, but it's a rather under-developed product firmware-wise. Also, the cable clusterfuck reminds me of macbook dongles in 2018. I wish they open the system to use other motors and focus systems with the lidar, but unfortunately DJI is not the company to expect an open system from. It's an Apple of the camera world, where each product will limit you to use their own line-up of products.
There isn't an official way to run iff off dtap yet. Have I missed something? if you use an accessory for the ronin you like putting too much power into it which is causing issues. as per the zoom thing, I cant say I have had that issue but I haven't tried it.
@@alexlubensky Just wanted to chip in to say that not all USB-C is created equal, it's not magic. The grip can use PD fast charging which most dumb D-Tap converters cannot supply. The hand unit voltage is 7.2-8.4v not 5v and I'm not sure it can charge while it's in use, not to mention how awkward the cable nest would become without a more bespoke solution from DJI. I have tried connecting the grip to a PD USB-C battery pack and did not get charging LEDs while the device was powered on, but your results may vary depending on adaptors etc. I also wonder if lens profiles can be deleted / corupted when power is sudenly lost without giving the device time to power off. I've lost some profiles when the device overheated as mentioned in the video but wasn't sure if the two issues were related or not - if that is going to be a concern when it's used with power bases from third parties than that's something to keep an eye on for sure. Lastly, I've not used any zoom lenses with it but I believe you - the software is not polished enough yet IMO and they need to update it more to get rd of some of these issues.

For just using Lidar AutoFocus without the Active Track moving the gimbal, you have to be in WIDE mode, not Flex Spot mode. I've just done a test and it was able to keep me in focus, even if I moved to the sides of the frame without moving the gimbal at all. Interested if you've still had a different experience?
good tips, ill have Shane try it out.
Question for you! Have you sorted out if the RS4 Pro can only store 3 lenses, or is there a way to do more like the grip that can store 15?? I find it crazy that it's essentially the same hardware piece but I can't get more than 3 on the gimbal. Would love to know if you experience the same.
@@AlterEgoCreates as far as i know its still limited to 3 lenses.

amazing video! I see in the video youre using Metabones adapters have you tried Speedbooster, do they work with the Lidar System?
Speedboosters should be fine because you manually set what is in focus yourself, the LiDar has no idea.
@@ShaneVanLitz thanks. Apparently some people had issues with speedboosters in the past. but i was asking because there are updates, tha maybe could have fixed that.
@@charlesucha3751 Righto - I think the issues is that you'd have to do the conversion maths when calibrating! If you're using a 50mm lens on a speedbooster the LiDar will expect a 35mm (or there about) focal length, not 50mm. Other than that, I'm not sure.
Any way to power this to a V-Mount?
Does the handle need to stay on the rig for the LiDar to work? - Like on gimbals
The LiDar unit can work without the handle if you have an RS4 but with some limited functionality vs with the Focus Pro handle.

Hello great video. Unfortunately I have a problem. I have my setup as follows: dji RS4 Pro, Lidar Pro, focus motor pro on a Fuji xh2s with an Irix Cine lens on a cage I have calibrated the focus motor. In manual mode the lights on the lidar and motor are permanently red and I can focus with the gimbal wheel. However, when I switch to automatic mode, the lidar lights up green and the motor yellow. Although I have already calibrated. What could be the problem? I look forward to your feedback. Also from the community BR Tim from Germany

There is a way to have auto focus without auto panning and tilting, you hit the trigger once in the front to turn it off and on

Just butt the Lidar unit against the wall or some straight edge. Then measure the distance from the wall to the sensor marker. How difficult is that?
@@CodyCha not a terrible way to go but, you are assuming the Wall is straight and that you are holding it straight and mounted perfectly straight haha
It’s meant to be dialled in as accurate as 1 mm.
Sounds pretty clunky. Not sure how that’s any easier than just measuring from the top of the lidar 😅
@@ShaneVanLitz the lidar is mounted 4-6 inches above the "focal plane mark" on the camera. It's not a straight measurement.
@@TheFilmGuyOfficial Use a right-angle ruler
@@CodyCha this is what I suggested in the video haha. but that also depends on how wide the sensor mark is. point being its not super simple espesullly on the fly.
@ sounds about how I’d expect it to go given it’s a camera that the lidar uses for tracking and cameras need light. Sorry it didn’t work out for you.

s for the Battery solution, this shows how much the RS4 Pro is a joke as the RS3 Pro is exactly what the RS4 Pro does.
@@LTULOfficial kinda yeah! Essentially it tries to frame your subject for you while you move around!
I don’t understand how they thought this was okay
I’m thinking it might be possible to control the gimbal if you buy the handgrip, you will attach it to the side of the gimbal. In that way you could use the autofocus and control the gimbal? Is there anyone who has tried that? @thefilmguyofficial
@@TheFilmGuyOfficial there are regulated d-tap to usb splitters like for years already.
@@alexlubensky yes but they usally have to be designed to push through the correct voltage.
@@TheFilmGuyOfficial usb is 5v. Straight cable delivers 12v unregulated, regulated splitters always do 5v
