lol, I love it. Makes hime seem more genuine and shows experience. I can really relate to wasting money on bad gear I never used, weak lights and things I didn't buy, like a bowl head on tripods.
The one thing I bring with me on every shoot (almost as much as I bring a camera) is my wind up extension cord reels. They come in SOOOO clutch and have saved my butt on so many occasions when the location doesn't have power nearby and you need to power more powerful lights that don't use Vmount batteries or even for splitting one outlet into many outlets to charge gear during lunch breaks and such. I almost never go to a gig without bringing 2 extension cord reels. They see more use than everything other than my camera.
I appreciate your content. I've been making documentaries for 20 years, specializing in nomadic tribes in West Africa. When shooting, I travel with my backpack and 15 kilos of equipment, plus my tripod. It's hard for me to carry a lighting kit when I'm traveling in the middle of the desert without a 4x4 car and no electricity supply. The only lightweight option is a Westcott-type flexible LED panel and flexible solar panels to recharge the V-Mount batteries.
really great option is ziyun molus x100 it is compact and powerful, the only downside it needs an adapter to be able to use it with larger modifiers and it is not weather resistant but you can power it from a power bank which could be useful for your type of work. I pair mine with aputure mini dome and you can create a solid fill light in most of conditions. I can fit in the small carry bag that comes with mini dome reflectors a small light stand and the adapter to mount the moles x100 to the octa- box.

Likewise! I have the Osee T7 and boy what a difference from my cheap AndyCine. Agree, the touchscreen can be a bit fiddly when setting up but otherwise it's a great monitor. I just wish there were better options for cages. Tons of options for Feelworld but the only option of seen for Osee T7 is the one by Nitze and the cheapest I've seen it is $140 CAD
Appreciate your take on it and very much agree. I love my Sachtler flow tech 😅and use it all the time, but actually I still always think of my Sachtler Ace M I bought about 15 years ago when I think of how important half decent tripod is. Hi Luc! I’ve been feeling the last videos a bit alike lately. It’s super useful to hear your thoughts on equipment, just would be great to go back to other topics. Keep up the great work, love the channel and don’t miss an episode
Hello Luc! Can you make a video on how Cinematographers should charge or how to come to a conclusion on what to charge for a Documentary shoot, it really makes me feel bad to charge a higher rate it kinda makes me feel as if I am asking way too much. Can you please make a video on this topic and how to be bold in pricing and charging them a rate which is rightful.
Hey Luc - absolutely love your content, and the fact you have real hands on experience. I'm currently upgrading my entire set up and trying to decide between getting a DJI Ronin 4D with the flex attachment, or an FX6 combined with the DJI RS4 pro and new lidar system for auto focus. Mainly for single shooter doc style pieces, but also corporate and branded content. Really struggling to decide between the two, and don't know if you've used the 4D or RS4/RS3?
Dear Luc - I was blown away with your audio quality by the first 20 seconds. Care to advice the whole audio reproduction chain please? Beginner setting up gears to start RUclips video here. 🙏

I had a non video related portable power need, a musical device which pulls more than 2.5 amps for a second at powerup then runs on very low. I didn't know about the vmounts.Very cool.
Buying gear on credit card debt it's insane, but you can take a personal loan at the bank that with a decent interest rate will allow you to acquire what you NEED and keep renting the rest. But for traveling gigs renting isn't always convenient, so take your time and don't get into unnecessary debt.
I own a sony a7 IV and own a moman v mount battery plus a patona dummy battery to power the camera. I’ve heard that powering a camera and monitor (ninja v in my case) off the same v mount battery is very risky since it can fry the camera.
Luc, I'd really love to see a comparison or just your thoughts on the laowa S35 17-50 vs the Fuji 18-55 zooms. The form factor of the Laowas are pretty crazy, but I've shot a lot on the fuji 19-90 cabrio and really love the way that lens looks. The laowas seem a bit clinical? I know your channel covers larger filmmaking ideas but would be great to hear your thoughts as I'm in asia and there's no where near me that stocks cine equipment, and there aren't many doc shooting fuji owners on youtube with your expertise :) Additionally just your thoughts on the C400 and canon in general. Im an ex canon shooter and have moved to sony, but still own some canon glass and honestly quite miss the canon IQ and general shooting experience. Do you think canon can make a comeback in the doco world? I'd love to grab a C400 (my A cam is currently an FX3 while I waited for the next big release), but I know most doc style productions strictly hire sony shooters these days. Thanks a bunch :)
I’ve never used the S35 laowas, but based on the FF Ranger lenses I would agree with that they’re on the more “clean” side. Maybe the s35 are different though, so don’t quote me on that! The cabrio is a beast, but a bit heavy - the MK version are perfect in my opinion as long as you’re ok with s35. Unless they break/get stolen, they’re going to be my go tos for a very long time. As for canon, they’re great. The camera looks fantastic, but I’m so deep into the Sony ecosystem at this point it’s unlikely I’ll change. Maybe I’ll get a chance to use it on someone else’s project though, and if so I’ll share my thoughts!
also-- Alone Series 11 is about to start. Maybe this season they'll show a glimpse of your face (other than the other DP who they actually show for moments every once and a while). Still not sure why they've NEVER shown your face before.
Just bough a BMD G2 (and an alt cine back 👍) it is amazing. My camera rig (including ssd batteriescand screen) cost me 1500€. And for me that is amazing. Last time I used a professional camera it was a.sony with huge tapes that we rented for a shoot. That was way bigger, heavier, cumbersome and with way less picture quality. And renting it for a week cost more. In that sense it is a great time for creators. If a video has a good story and good sound it will be watched even if the picture quality is a bit below par. If the audio is beliw par people will leave asap. Also bought a few godox lights, no complaints.. yet. But still setting up. Also not the brightest ones by a long way, bit they will get used in a controlled environment. I do wish that not only DMX controlled lights were Home assistant compatible. That would make automation so much easier.
I went the audio route because you have gained high credibility with me. However, if I have to be honest, I struggle to find music there, and I do not need tons of it.
Reminded when i was involved in a super budget short movie shoot We had an "accident" on set where we moved from a simple rode mic for ambient to capturing dialogue to a rode ntg2 ( i think ? ) except the operator didnt lower the monitoring gain when we did - the room was silent until one of the cast yelled into it. Sure to say he had a field day yelling back at us lmao
@@JJARCHIE 🤣 this is why I love filmmaking... The community, and the police you surround yourself with to get the project done. Even if you do deafen one of them and get shouted at 😅
@@SystemParanoia yeah i definitely want to do more projects , had a blast actually using a gh5s at that time ) pulling manual solo with a speedboosted 16-35 2.8 wasnt fun tho )
Talking about how some of the gear is more accessible than back in the day makes me think how crazy it is that a small 4k cam with a fast 35mm, wireless mic pack, gimbal or tripod and molus X100 will be good enough for most scenarios. A good laptop with Davinci Resolve free, hell even studio is cheap, in the right hands can make for a professional end result, even for big productions. And it all fits into ONE camera bag! I mean that's really stripping down an entire production crew with gear rentals and studio space and turns an entire $500000 production into a $5000 guerilla MACHINE haha. Oh yes, and then there's AI doing some of the work too! Again, keyword "IN THE RIGHT HANDS", but still, just that it is possible, is a crazy thought.
With TV still mostly in HD, and 4k still new and broadcasted in low quality because of low bandwidth internet that most people have, I think the days of needing new cameras is coming to an end. We're getting close to the parity of the 90's. You buy a betacam for 5 to 8 years and thats that. I mean, does anyone need more than an fs7? No. Do we need to replace an a7s 3 or a gh7? No. Theres just not much to gain anymore, and half the industry still uses HD cameras. I am hoping I am not wrong. But like, outside of 6k, 8k, 9k, 25k resolution what on earth is there to add? Really? Were at a plateau and my friends in TV say we've been there since 1080 60p was standard on all cameras lol.
Luc, do you think it would be possible to review the YC Onion Pineta Peak Mark II tripod? CineD made some appealing comparisons to the Sachtler flowtech, but your opinion would be much more valuable than one from a tech channel Idk if they would send you an unit to review but maybe it's worth a try
Grab an AT 4053b for indoor use. The best budget condenser mic around. Sure, the Sennheiser MKH 50 is wonderful, but twice as expensive, and exactly zero people have complained about my 4053b. In a pinch, I can use my Rode NTG3 indoors, but I generally use that 416 clone outdoors. Half the price of the MKH 416.
Isn’t it a part of the personal filmmaking evolution to get gear for the job ahead? Sometimes it’s awesome, and sometimes it’s useless. My vision of how new gear will fit into my ever evolving process isn’t always right….😊
I know I know The a 6000 seems like a cheap camera, and it is. But as you know there's way more than the one you see. Mine is still working. Daily. Since 2016
Does anybody see a problem with replacing the wireless pack with the DJI mic 2 but using the shotgun mic still to accompany the setup? What are the cons with doing that?
Hi Luc, anything you can offer as to what you find problematic with Andycine monitors? I'm ready to upgrade to a new monitor (or two) and I don't want to buy the same Andycine(s) I have if you have a few words to talk me out of it, would be appreciated. Thanks.
my main complaint on the Andycine I used was the poor focus peaking. All the other features are fine, but for me if the focus peaking isn’t good then it fails its main job - to help me frame and shoot better. As a doc shooter all the other stuff is nice to have, but not essential. In a studio environment it might be fine, just not for what I do!
I feel like rode wireless pro has basically killed the sennheiser g3/g4. Those things have no internal recording, are annoying to setup, and despite using 900mhz still are able to drop out in reasonable conditions. They're also massive. IDK though as I've only used the sennheisers on one project and after that project both me and my director bought a rode wireless pro kit.
Luc, I'm wondering if you have any advice on whether or not the 5" monitor or the 7" monitor is best. Any others who know about this, I'd also love to hear from you.
for me 5” is the way to go for on camera, but that’s because I travel a ton and need minimal weight. I also have a 7” for studio shooting, but I don’t take it internationally. So it depends what you’re doing with it!
really thank you for all the information that are making our path easier, thank you from someone came from a 3rd world country and trying his best to be part of the documentary filmmaking industry
I'm a videographer living in Uganda it's great to hear you'll be in East Africa for project won't lie I'm very curious about it I hope you enjoy your time here.
Not really, both are poor value buys in 2023. DPA 2017 is a far better value shotgun that's priced the same. Ditto Sony UWP-D Series vs Sennheiser G4/G3
I'd stear clear, honestly. I tried them and was really disappointed. They might have changed this by now, but when I tried they didn't even have an interface to white list a RUclips channel and instead just gave you a PDF to email RUclips if Audiio sent you a copyright strike. There was a form for your company name and stuff but that was for generating invoices. Epidemic Soumd is the way to go imo.
Meh. I'm still figuring out what side of my Pixel has the camera on it, so I am lightyears away from some of these tasty things you wave around, Luc. I walk away with gems of your information, and may not have/get some of this, its important to be familiar with it. As you pointed out, tech always gets cheaper, and I know that the less I have to work with makes me stronger. I may piss and moan, but it makes me resourceful and sharpens my vision to possibilities. I'm also completely sold on buying used equipment. I go to KEH because they are so good at hold handing and teaching me things rather than just mailing me my purchases. Have you talked about those possibilities? I'd be interested in your thoughts about buying used equipment from rental dealers. I am all about cheap and cheap as wise as I can buy it. I would love to take advantage of rental services like Audiio, but since I am still working on how to open a new project and save it on Resolve😁🙄 that's still down the road for me. An audio/copyright issue that has me stumped--I've been told not to even attempt at writing your own music, somehow it will be made into a copyright litigation. OK, fair enough. But could a creator make one's own single tone sounds manipulated, to add or to denote the action/feelings of a scene? I'm sure you sensibly don't answer questions about law, a wise move, but on the odd chance I might catch you in a moment of weakness: some thoughts on a purely imagined action such as this? I used to work at Kinkos, back when it was relevant, and I had no choice but to play the copyright police with sly businesspeople. That's when I learned how to use my Adult Voice to get customers to listen to me. "Who's your boss?!" "God. Next?"
Did you get a new microphone recently? Or did you not edit audio in post? I love your content but the sibilances were pretty harsh in this video. I appreciate everything you do, and I dont mean to come across mean just trying to help :)
I've found SmallHD to be the most unreliable brand I've used. Hands down. I've got far better life out of cheaper brands, Portkeys and even cheaper, than I have out of SmallHD.
Hey, Luc, if I could I would love to join on your trip to East Africa if you need another AC, PA or grip. I grew up in East Africa (my family lived in Uganda for 10 years and the last 4 I spent at a boarding school in Kenya 45 minutes outside of Nairobi). However, I doubt I could afford up and traveling rn. I also am a third year film student who is trying to get on as a PA for local feature film that starts filming at the end of the month. Meeting the line producer in a few days.
For monitor part, if you have limited budget, just buy a video capture card and use your cell phone as monitor. Monitor+ is a decent app for camera monitoring. Cell phone usually have larger screen than 5 inch monitors and don't require external power.

Dang you are not messing around! I learned alot here. thank you
always such good and down to earth videos! thank you luc!
How important do you think it is a gimbal for RUclips vlogs?
also-- Alone Series 11 is about to start. Maybe this season they'll show a glimpse of your face (other than the other DP who they actually show for moments every once and a while). Still not sure why they've NEVER shown your face before.
good starter camera for product photo/video? and lens + continues light + flash. can you pls suggest me everything
You had me at 'Raven Eye' not to mention all the little useless cables they give you 🤣
Just bough a BMD G2 (and an alt cine back 👍) it is amazing.
I'd say 3 mics.. the lav, the shotgun and the pencil.
Shotgun outdoors and pencil indoors
Reminded when i was involved in a super budget short movie shoot
We had an "accident" on set where we moved from a simple rode mic for ambient to capturing dialogue to a rode ntg2 ( i think ? ) except the operator didnt lower the monitoring gain when we did - the room was silent until one of the cast yelled into it.
I’m heading to Africa to shoot a doc in a month and would love to see what all is in your Africa kit and how you pack everything!
NO MENTION OF ND Filters ?
8k is disturbingly too sharp, it's unnatural.
Luc, do you think it would be possible to review the YC Onion Pineta Peak Mark II tripod? CineD made some appealing comparisons to the Sachtler flowtech, but your opinion would be much more valuable than one from a tech channel
Idk if they would send you an unit to review but maybe it's worth a try
Do you have any recommendations for budget-friendly or used external recorders that can record in 4K 10-bit? The more affordable, the better.
informative video thanks Luc.
My pleasure!
Nice content as usual, but the sound... are you using the 416 indoor ?
Grab an AT 4053b for indoor use. The best budget condenser mic around. Sure, the Sennheiser MKH 50 is wonderful, but twice as expensive, and exactly zero people have complained about my 4053b.
In a pinch, I can use my Rode NTG3 indoors, but I generally use that 416 clone outdoors. Half the price of the MKH 416.
Isn’t it a part of the personal filmmaking evolution to get gear for the job ahead? Sometimes it’s awesome, and sometimes it’s useless.
My vision of how new gear will fit into my ever evolving process isn’t always right….😊
thank you! I needed that video.
I know I know
The a 6000 seems like a cheap camera, and it is. But as you know there's way more than the one you see. Mine is still working. Daily. Since 2016
I went with the 300X or the 300D, but boy, is it a great light! I'm all Apature/Amrama so one App to work with.
Does anybody see a problem with replacing the wireless pack with the DJI mic 2 but using the shotgun mic still to accompany the setup? What are the cons with doing that?
what a video thank you, Luc appreciate it
Hi Luc, anything you can offer as to what you find problematic with Andycine monitors? I'm ready to upgrade to a new monitor (or two) and I don't want to buy the same Andycine(s) I have if you have a few words to talk me out of it, would be appreciated. Thanks.
my main complaint on the Andycine I used was the poor focus peaking. All the other features are fine, but for me if the focus peaking isn’t good then it fails its main job - to help me frame and shoot better. As a doc shooter all the other stuff is nice to have, but not essential. In a studio environment it might be fine, just not for what I do!
@@LucForsyth Agreed! I was almost expecting you to mention that as the reason! Thank you for the response.
This video is SPOT ON!
Hope your shoot in East Africa went great. Am from Kenya and a filmmaker here in Canada. Let me know if you would want a collaboration at any time.
What's a "bongo" in your AC kit? 8:33
Probably bongo ties. Look it up on B&H. I used to use them to tie my xlr cables to my Gitzo boompole, but now I just use hair ties.
Funny enough, I JUST. purchased a 600d last night. Deff hurt to spend 1100$ but I know it’ll be worth it one day.
" i dont know, your fees are kinda high "
" I have the power of the sun on the palm of my hand "
" Wh .. what ? "
Thank for all the top notch content my guy
My pleasure!
really thank you for all the information that are making our path easier, thank you from someone came from a 3rd world country and trying his best to be part of the documentary filmmaking industry
Oh wow, I missed this! I'm sorry, I didn't even know this tab existed - Thank you for the support!
I'm a videographer living in Uganda it's great to hear you'll be in East Africa for project won't lie I'm very curious about it I hope you enjoy your time here.
That 416 and G3 Lav, spot on.
Not really, both are poor value buys in 2023.
DPA 2017 is a far better value shotgun that's priced the same.
Ditto Sony UWP-D Series vs Sennheiser G4/G3
The Tascam DR 10L pro is better than any wireless. I love mine, turn on and forget it.
@@TeddyRumble it really is not better than wireless, as you can't monitor the Tascam!
@@SoundSpeeding the pro allows you to check level.
@@TeddyRumble but can you detect rustles or wind noise? Nope. Can you give an audio feed to people who need it on set? Nope.
Can audiio be used for documentaries? The terms say no ota or theatrical use? I’m looking for a solution for film festivals.
It seems as though most light videos tell you they only use a small percent of the power
"Who's your boss?!"
"God. Next?"
Thansk for the valuable content you make here
Thank you for watching!
Sony cameras hold their value way better than other brands
Great list.
"I made a video on this" - then link it! We have the technology 😂. Great video so far though, thanks.
Hi Luc Forsyth, thanks for your video. We'd like to discuss the possibility of working with you. What should we do?
Did you get a new microphone recently? Or did you not edit audio in post? I love your content but the sibilances were pretty harsh in this video. I appreciate everything you do, and I dont mean to come across mean just trying to help :)
oof you said you changed your 416. (6:00) What did you change it to?
top value video! thank you!
Glad you liked it!
Meeting the line producer in a few days.
great run-down!
If you happen to visit Kenya, I'll be humbled to say hi 😁
I do cave photography and videography and i can tell you beyond GoPro, no one comes as close to durability as Nikon
I have a raven eye you can have🎉Thank You
Gold!
that tripod you are speaking about is listed as $6000 US at B&H .... maybe it does more than i think it does...
Where in East Africa?
Wish I watched this 3 years ago...
For monitor part, if you have limited budget, just buy a video capture card and use your cell phone as monitor.
Monitor+ is a decent app for camera monitoring.
Cell phone usually have larger screen than 5 inch monitors and don't require external power.
#Sachtlerflowtech gang 💪
Does anyone wants my drawer Raveneye. Is new and maybe needs a battery recharge. XD
Tri pod

Thanks for this bro!
Hey am an East African documentary filmmaker btw, would be such an honor to catch up. How about i help out with bts content 😊
Thank you
I’d love to, but I’m in a very remote area and I’m not in charge of crew…but hopefully next time my friend!
