Saving A Cosmo - Making The Side Vents - L10A Restoration

  • Getting creative and making the tooling to replicate the side vents from scrap steel on my L10a Mazda Cosmo.
    A surprisingly good result given the caveman approach of cutting steel plate by hand to make the dies and instead of just cutting the finished vent area out to weld in. I decided to do a little freehand challenge and make as much of the panel as I could with the remaining sheet surrounding the vent area.
    Again, I am shocked at just how different these cars are, with mine having a different length (shorter) perimeter step around the vents, despite all 3 cars being series 1's, and given the conflicting cars are only 2 numbers apart and then the other one is 100 numbers newer with the identical size vent area to the earliest car makes me even more confused as to how the factory tooling allowed such differences. If it were a change of tooling as the numbers progressed, I would understand. I have another update video of Richard's Cosmo coming out soon!

    Brave guy. I thought for sure the vents were going to be rendered scrap after all the time spent on them, while doing the perimeter bead. Having completed that impossible task, you risk it all again 🤣

    always surprising how much you can get into one piece of panel, well done. this episode of project Binky covered making a louver pressing tool that might be easier? for repeatable individual louvers, but i like the laser cut plan to accurately locate them. Project Binky - Episode 9 - Austin Mini GT-Four - Turbocharged 4WD Mini (at the 8 minute mark, they are using the home made tool)

    • @notevn
      @notevn  3 месяца назад

      The pullmax is very violent and would require a tonne more jigs and fixtures like timber with slots cut and the vent being sandwiched between, when it was much easier to just do it by hand, a more accurate and less risky procedure imo.

      I'm thinking it actually has a whole series 2 nose been put on the car a long time ago. Explains why the valance is a series 2 and matches the nose cone wear and tear perfectly. I hadn't looked too closely as I didn't suspect anything and as it's all so rusty but now I can see where they have joined it infront of the factory join at the pillar.
