Gordon once said in an interview that the difference between hell's kitchen and masterchef is that in hell's kitchen those are supposed to be professionals while masterchef are cooks, home cooks, and other who just picked up cooking as hobby and he recognized that. Which is why he is less harsh and provides more feed back in masterchef compared to hell's kitchen

      @JRAndrach 5 месяцев назад +476

Yeah, that's kind of what drew me into this show at first, but then they do the Hell's Kitchen-like restaurant takeover challenges, and all of that goes out the window. These are home cooks who don't need to produce dishes in that environment and have likely never done so. Putting them in that situation and expecting the perfection level they seem to want really takes me out of it.

@shadmanhasan4205 Italy has only existed as it is since 1946, the kingdom of Italy was late 1800s I think but that wasn't all of it today. It was composed of city states and independent kingdoms between the fall of Rome and then. Much of Europe was the same really, even say in France which has existed as a kingdom for millenia, you can still divide it into areas of different languages or dialects, which only relatively recently were combined into a single common language and identity. It's really fascinating. And so much good food to discover.
But yeah, northern and southern Italian food are completely different. Equally delicious, of course. Sorry, that was way longer than it needed to be.

This is description of Gordon is exactly why his meme exists (“Oh, dear! Oh gorgeous!” VS “YOU FUCKING DONKEY!”). He’s a tough teacher, but a teacher with pride. There is no hesitation on his part to help a kid who’s supposed to be the cream of the crop because he recognizes that even if they are the best, they are still learning and eager to receive praise. He comforts the kids, explains what they did wrong, and how they could do better and try again. That’s why in Gordon’s other shows, especially in Hell’s Kitchen, he’s much more aggressive. In some of these shows, he doesn’t coddle the new chefs, but he exercises a lot more patience compared to Hell’s Kitchen, who have had their time and experience to hone their skills, so he is inevitably angry when someone talks big and comes up short.

Yeah, you can always tell that Gordon just wants chefs/cooks/contestants on his shows to succeed and be great based on how he shifts how he talks to them based on what they need. He's hard on the professional chefs with years of restaurant experience and huge egos but SO much softer and gentler with cooks who don't have that kind of training or who just lack confidence. Joe just seemed to delight in his role of being the 'mean judge' and trashing cooks, which really sucks because you know some of those contestants were really deeply hurt by what he said. Even if their dishes weren't good, there's a difference between constructive criticism meant to better an individual and just trying to tear someone down to make them cry on television.

The contestants prepare the dishes twice. The first batch is prepared, the contestants leave to do the interviews and the judges taste the food alone while it's still warm.
The second batch is then filmed and the tasting is just for the camera, the opinions have already been made.
This is completely fine as each meal gets tasted fresh and warm.

I remember as a younger kid and teen I thought Gordon was just a colossal jerk and quickly realized now that I'm in my mid 20s that Gordon is beyond reasonable most of the time and even gives more leeway than he probably should for some. Joe not only is a colossal hygienic product that I cant type out on here, but likely cant cook himself. He was always that bad and likely embarrasses his mom who is a professional. The type of complex he has is mind numbing.

    Here’s the ironic thing.
Joe believed that Howard was going to win MasterChef during his audition where he made a basic cobbler, and was so confident he went out and told everyone he believed Howard could win. But once Howard was in the MasterChef kitchen he naturally underperformed, and every time that happened, Joe would bully and berate him because it shows joe’s own incompetence. As untalented as Howard is, it’s not his fault that he failed entirely, it’s also Joe’s fault. There’s a reason why auditions exist, to seperate the good from the bad, if Joe was any good, he wouldn’t have given Howard an apron, let alone go out and tell everyone Howard would win.
On the other hand, Joe completely underestimated Christina purely because of her disability, and yet she excels throughout the whole series, proves everyone wrong and wins. Funny that.

As an American who now lives in Australia, I challenge Joe to come down here and give his comment about 'Australian chicks' in any local pub. He'll be cowering in a corner within 5 seconds. One thing he needs to know about Australian men is that they are willing to defend their women to the bitter end.

At least the other judges give constructive criticism & give them an opportunity to grow if they feel theres still potential . Joe is the single reason why I refuse to watch the show, and that's before I knew anything about him. It's the running shoes with the suit, I don't care who you are, what your credentials are, or how expensive the shoes are, you look ridiculous wearing brightly colored running shoes with nice dresswear, it's tacky and gaudy and just screams attention whore/douchebag

Garlic bread stems from bruschetta, which appeared in Italy around the 15th century, and can be traced back to Ancient Rome. Garlic bread originated in the United States and it is a typical Italian-American dish. It probably originated after Italian immigrants started to use butter as a substitute for olive oil, which was uncommon in the United States in the first half of the 20th century.

@@isaiahmayle4706 Though maybe technically accurate - depending on your definition of garlic bread? Like, if you're really narrow minded and think all "garlic bread" must be exactly like America's.... then yeah, probably not so common in Italy.
But I only say that because I've seen people try to explain how noodles and pasta are actually totally different things -🤨- to excuse Judge Joe's racism and eurocentrism, particularly his comment about there not being "any pasta in China".
I don't think most reasonable people would normally split hairs like that unless they were being purposefully obnoxious or obstinate.

Bastianich also was a judge for the Italian Masterchef for a period, so I am inclined to defend him a bit: the first, let's say, 2 season he acted just like you are describing him in this video.
Then, when he realized his act was getting old, he kinda mellowed out and especially his interactions with chef Cannavacciuolo were funny af.
So yeah, this is just a character he is supposed to play.
Just to draw a comparison: Chef Barbieri is the only judge that has always been part of the show since season one and has taken the role of the evil one, the most feared and the most aggressive in his criticism.
He also is the judge for another show named "4 Hotels", which has a completely different vibe since all the participants are professionals. In that show he's a completely different character, he is always cheerful, has a dorky personality and even in his complaints he always keeps it cool.
