I am burnt out, so I'm going to take a little time and rest, you should do the same over holidays, we all need it. Love -Eyepatch Wolf
I'm sorry to hear that happened as a major UT fan. I love this game and the content that comes from it, but some people in it are just well...yeah lol. Ty for making awesome covers/music btw.
One of the things I think that makes this a masterpiece is how hard the sans fight is. It requires so much of you, that by the time you beat him, you don’t feel the sadness you did when you killed undyne and papyrus. It’s a feeling of relief, just like what I’d imagine a serial killer with no real ties to anyone would feel
When I fought sans, I got so stressed to the point where I *wanted* him to die, where my fury fueled me to win. After I killed him, I felt nothing but relief, no regrets, no guilt.
"What is that like, for Toby Fox?" My heart sank. I can't imagine the level of pressure & expectation felt for Deltarune development, or anything else.
Which is probably why he made it way different because it couldn't surpass or be just as good as undertale. Deltarune is a more normal RPG where your choices don't matter as much
I love how you got progressively more unhinged as you talked about each Undertale AU. This IP really has limitless possibilities and its a lot of fun to see them all develop
he was planning to make deltarune before relasing undertale he talked how he tried to make a game that he aborted and deltarune is a mix from that game and undertale it is a continuing of the story line it is a sequel to undertale but in another timeline
@Brayden Ozaeta the post genocide pacifist run seems likely to have had the continuation, for those who dont know after doing a genocide route it permanently effects the pacifist route by showing frisk is still possesed by chara and some spoilers for the deltarune demo it ends with what seems like chara forcibly taking over the players body similar to that ending
now that you remind me of deltarune do you or anyone else here know where i can download it because it doesn´t seem to be on steam or atleast i couldn´t find it there
I like it, i don't care if it doesn't recieve the same attention or it's "not as good", Toby is a great developer and the charm on his games is just enough for them to be worth it
Thoroughly enjoyed this video, and it didn't even bring up how one of the FIRST things to come out of the fandom was making UTAUs of Sans and Papyrus and make them sing Drop Pop Candy.
@@frauleinzuckerguss1906 Maybe the more elaborate animations were made later, but I remember just hearing the song like only a few months after the game came out.
Thankfully I discovered Reol and Giga before I found out there was an Undertale cover. I think I heard the Rin/Luka version first on a dance cover which then led me down the rabbit hole of Vocaloid.....
The fact that Undertale went from a game of befriending instead of killing monsters to a chaotic multiverse of altered versions of the game truly shows how much power a fandom can have.
Toby's obviously massively popular but I can't help but respect how he's absolutely refused to be a public figure despite that. Just the fact that he only appeared on that anniversary live stream as a dog plush speaking via text to speech. Absolute king shit.
I feel bad for toby fox. The guy just wanted to make a neat game and accidentally influenced the entire internet and I don't know how he handles it because I know i wouldn't be able to
I hope he enjoys the attention. They’ve completely ruined his game. Edit:It would be weird to create a game special to you then have it violated in ways you couldn’t even imagine by people who rip your ideas. I just hope the guy who made the game doesn’t feel that way.
And yet during the pacifist route (or even the neutral route with Omega Flowey) it is the opposite. The true message is that the player is the only character with real power. Everyone else (except toby himself) has absolutely no agency. Is it any wonder that Sans is depressed, since he alone knows about the reset power but can never wield it?
The villain can always come back if the heroes spare them. Or even if the heroes off the villain, there's always gonna be another one. On the other hand... if the villain gets the heroes, they can just snowball their way to victory. If you expect someone else to stand up, that's probably merely dependent on your hopes and dreams.
As soon as I heard him say that line, I immediately teared up. What a powerful phrase for such a small game that has become so powerful in the internet today. And it’s amazing really. Despite everything, Undertale is still Undertale. You are still you.
@@jakubsolar4670well, I’m 16 and I’m just starting to get into undertale, tbh I only played the original game but I have a friend who tells me about all of these AUs
and the people to. The undertale fandom is a really good example of just how much people would go to when they experience something they wanna experience again, even if it's something small, they wanna relive the experience again in different ways that had never happened before. one thing i usually think is that whenever a fictional world/game can have you feel feelings you haven't experienced at all/very little, it's a good game.
Honestly the view counts on the AU animations did that for me. If an AU video is getting tens of millions of views… I mean Jesus kickflipping Christ that’s only a portion of the whole fan base
I just don't know how we went from a great and emotional game to the rest of the fans creating their own fandoms and au's . It's really not a bad thing, (different fandoms sometimes make other au's of one character), but they make their characters and au's RIDICULOUSLY OP. I'm not joking, they make their characters way more op than characters like Anos, Rimuru, Xeno goku, and archie sonic. It just proves that they love undertale a little TOO much. More than what toby expected/wanted. Toby didn't want over a million au's, he just wanted a great gaming franchise, and a fanbase dedicated to him and the games he makes, not other versions of sans that are somehow above fiction. Overall, I kinda like the underverse, even tho the fans are too obsessive and annoying sometimes, it's fine. p.s: (I don't suggest you get into debates like, oh, Anos vs sans from random au, because then the underverse fanbase is going to come after you. I'm not kidding, THEY WILL COME AFTER YOU; they will tell you that their sans and au's are more powerful than, marvel, dc, AND EVEN THE ONE ABOVE ALL. It just proves that they love undertale TOO much.)
The thing that really spooked me about Undertale is when I accidentally killed Toriel because I didn't know how to play quite yet. Because I wanted to go pacifist, I restarted. But when greeted by Flowey, he knew what I had done.
After Toriel gets low enough on HP, the next attack is scripted to kill her. The game wants this to happen, knowing that most people will reset, experiencing Flowey calling them out on their save scumming. I was taken aback when it happened to me too.
I love watching a grown man going insane over a fandom that I was into when I was in middle school. The AUs were so common to me, all that variety was so normal
I think that the reason behind Deltarune being released in small chapters may be what you talked bout at the end : to prevent too much hype at the same type, so that Toby Fox doesn’t need to go through the same thing.
Wait that would make a lot of sense lol He actually said that every time someone asks when the next chapter would come out he'll delay it by a year. Kind of discouraging but also it does seem like a protection too
As someone who’s been a part of the Undertale Fandom ever since 2016, I can see how absolutely INSANE it would look from the outside. I wasn’t on Tumblr at the time, but I was on RUclips. I was there to witness the emerging of Undertale literally everywhere online. While I was still picking apart the original game, AUs were being pumped out like clockwork. Fangames, fanart, animations, webseries, lets plays, fan songs, anything you can think of. I distinctly remember watching those sans fight animations, especially the “Beautiful Day” and “Stronger Than You” ones. v0idless, SpectroliteAAA, TC-96, CrayonQueen(loverofpiggies), and Jael Peñaloza literally RAISED me. Without them, I wouldn’t be the person I was today. Yes, the Undertale fandom can be insane, but it means so much to all of us. Thank you for the video!
Undertale is where I got my start comic dubbing and frankly there is no videogame in history that has resulted in as much quality fan content as Undertale, like I really wish I had gotten into it a year earlier right when it came out. Unfortunately though due to how annoying the community became I decided to stop dubbing comics for it. However I REALLY look forward to Deltarune, and I hope its community can achieve the same heights Undertale's did except this time avoiding those same mistakes.
Avoiding those mistakes is going to be really hard. Toby can only really look at his own mistakes and finding his own limitations is only part of that. He still looks upon Undertale and Deltarune in a way that will continue to make his work harder - in particular, he is rather uncomfortable about working with larger teams (I think only three people contributed to Undertale?), but he also has realised his body is no longer able to put up with the work he's forced himself through, at the pace he wants. So I'm hoping he's found a way to maintain the creative flexibility he wants, with the quality he wants to put forward.
@Alex Munz Unfortunately I'm afraid that will prevent any sort of major community from building around it. Releasing it piece by piece won't really result in the same explosion of growth releasing it all at once would. Although frankly it wouldn't surprise me if that's exactly why he's doing it piece by piece, so that it's not the same meteor hitting the earth as last time.
If you guys thought Undertale was great you guys should play OneShot it has a really great story, great characters, and a great game mechanic that interacts with us the player.
I came here expecting a rant of some sort about how the fandom shot everything to hell and back multiple times. Needless to say I was, and am, pleasantly surprised at how deep, emotional, and somehow INFORMATIVE this video was. Thanks for everything you do Wolf!
Speaking of AUs, I still feel Horrortale is the best one. Not because it's darker and 'scarier' but because unlike most other AUs which just either swap a few characters around, change the world it's in or just make them edgier, but because it takes place AFTER one of the neutral endings in the main game. So in a way, you could read it as semi-canon to the main game. It takes an already canon AU and expands on it, which is why I love it so much.
Fun fact, if you go back to to Toriel’s house after you defeat asriel, when you interact with the mirror, it says “It’s still you, Frisk.” It’s reassuring what asgore’s mirror tells you, that after everything, it is still you, no matter what.
@@allisonmarie9070 As someone who sometimes has problems with dissociation and self image issues (not as in not liking my appearance, as in having a hard time accepting that the body I’m in is mine) that line just kind of hit in a way I can’t describe
Or if you go in bed it says "Its weird it feels lile your to big for it now" or when you go back to the ruins where the mouse and the cheese is it says "you see a little nible in the cheese"
in the undertale vinyl collection, toby left a note on how undertale didn't feel like his own work anymore, but rather, everyone's work. and he's happy about that.
@@0816M3RC They aren't mental. There's just a herd mentality on the internet. Look at it like this, there are more people who watched Markipliers full playthrough of pacifist then people who have actually played the game. Couple that with kids and you got yourself an annoying fanbase.
I played Undertale for the first time in 2017. I played it many many times, but i’ve never done the No Mercy run. This video is like a rollercoaster of nostalgia for me. I was very fond of AUs and i was very down in the fandom’s rabbit hole. Listening to you talking about, with also the OST in the background, made me tear up a bit. I know i’m late to this video, but i just wanted to write this
I used to be in this fandom, it took me three goddamn years to get out of this rabbit hole and I recently have been trying to peek back into it to see how it’s changed and for nostalgic porpoises. It’s actually terrifying how deep it is, there’s more content of the undertale fandom than any one or even fucking 100 people could experience if they had double the typical life span and did nothing BUT look at undertale stuff. It’s really fucking scary and phenomenal that soooo many people are so passionate about one small thing. I can’t images what Toby fox thinks that his game spawned all of this.
@@Rei-tm3so from what I’ve seen, sort of. A lot of the most popular content is still from a couple years ago, but is still getting a LOT of new views. The newer stuff isn’t getting much attention from fans, but rather people who are nostalgic of the game.
@@popeoneguy7992 nah is still pretty active a good example of it is undertale bits and pieces that is a mod that wants to remake the entire undertale game, is just a bit more "hidden" per se i feel like the community will get even bigger and famous again when the full release of deltarune release.
as someone who started out animating undertale related content (and still do) I thoroughly enjoy this video, and as weird and cursed some AUs are, it brings out the chance for creativity for the fans
truth, like even when you don't like a certain fanwork you can still see through it and see that at the core it's just someone who really enjoys undertale
Yeah some undertale AU can be cringe but some of them can be good like underverse, glitchtale, inverted fate,... (There is a lot of AU) some fan want to crossover like undertale X Earthbound, Undertale X RPG HORROR (Those two are my favorite crossover) Some undertale fan combine they favorite game to undertale to make AU yeah that is just cringe but at least some can be good Over all this is just my opinion.
The story of the Undertale fandom is possibly the best example of when something truly tears itself apart. it brought so many people together, kickstarted so many careers, brought fame and money to a game that basically caused itself to become a sub-genre, but the variety of fan art, AU's, and other completely fan driven content led to a volatile reaction among the fans, turning them against each other, all because one didn't feel the same about a fan piece as another. Eventually, the beauty in the scale became warped by the voices of the very people who praised it.
That's the sad truth about the fandom. These groups are supposed to praise what they love, only that their obsession becomes the thing that tear down apart once they are hostile which it's unhealthy and lead them to hurt anyone. The piece of fiction is like a doll, the two sides of the fandom (the toxic and innocent side) fought over it like a tug of war.
@@poweroffriendship2.0 That is true for any game now...This is one of the main reasons I don't buy games anymore, I can't trust anyones opinion on it as the reviews are polar opposites of one another. Also the fandom likes to insult everyone who are suppose to be allowed to not like stuff that they do. It's a free country after all.
Dude... You actually had me tearing up at the end. I have been doing the RUclips/Twitch thing for about 5 years now myself and man... My life has changed so much in that time... So many positive things and of course a few negative... But despite everything, It's still me. Fantastic video.
I'll be honest, it sucks on the rare occasions I talk about undertale cause it's my favorite game and my more internet-savey friends just laugh and quote memes or make a megalovania joke. I get it, they're funny, but sometimes I just wanna talk about this game that means a lot to me without 30 layers of irony attached.
I think about this sorta thing every now and then. I think memes are fun, however there is a danger of becoming "meme filled" where you don't take the world seriously anymore, and for some reason you need to add 30 layers of irony to everything. That is honestly not fun. Like I said it's all fun and games to meme alot, but sometimes you just gotta appreciate the original thing or take a break from the internet.
As someone who is part of the meme community and haven't played the game, I don't mind about Megalovania meme but the song itself is pretty adrenaline kicking. Plus, from what I've learned, that's not technically San's theme song, it's more like a song that is BASED ON THE SITUATION.
Passion. Undertale being a runaway success is just icing on that cake, the internet is always going to hype a follow up entry. I don't think he planned on it being this popular.
As someone who's been a part of this fandom for about 5 years now, I love this video. I was afraid to watch it for a while, cause I thought you'd misrepresent the fanbase like so many people do. But you didn't. You acknowledged the good and the bad, and didn't call us all cringe. You have no idea how much that makes me smile, and how giddy I was with each mention of an AU. I knew them all (did not know that Fellswap is set during the Cold War tho), and it makes me happy that you also like the glitchy fella. I kinda wish you could've gone more intk some kf the... not so savory things the fandom has made (cough cough PJ's, cough cough the Sans fangirls who were drawing themselves unaliving eah other cough), but we'd be here all day. I guess what I have to say is this: thanks for treating a community I've grown up with and a game I adore fairly, and thanks for making me laugh, almost cry, and think about my actions in my playthroughs. I think that's what Toby would have liked to see more of from the fandom.
Lmao I remember the 1st time I ever beat this game I did the Pacifist route and it asked that reset question and knew what it meant so I immediately just went to go play Doom and Resident Evil right afterwards cause I hankering to kill some monsters but not those innocent ones after I beat it xD
Yeah I killed Toriel on my first play by straight accident and when it was over and I understood what was up I said no replays no reloads I got to carry this. Beat it and so far have never played it again.
I accidentally killed toriel when I first played the game(I’m bad at the game). I didn’t want that so I reset. Her noticing something was off was already strange, but flowey calling me a terrible person after resetting to save her was enough to give me a huge amount of guilt for the rest of my playthrough. I’m actually scared to continue it. This game definitely resonates emotionally for me.
Oh yeah, Undertale is all about guilt, anything you do Flowey will point out or at the very least will be hinted at in the game with how the characters react to you and how Frisk reacts to them. What I especially love is how edgy and angsty Flowey acts because it makes sense, of course a child would try to act all scary, not only that but he’s pretty much a representation of the player as both have the power to essentially play “god” as Flowey likes to word it, which is sort of ironic in a way as people usually think frisk or even Chara are representations of the player and the player’s mind when really Frisk is just a poor child forced to be a vessel (but unlike in deltarune we actually have more freedom as a player) and Chara who really wasn’t supposed to be a villain, more of a final judge to the player’s actions as the player literally killed the royal judge.
Yeah I definitely got a little sidetracked with that paragraph, but I really do like how unique undertale is despite having very limited graphics, there’ll truly never be a game like Undertale (or Deltarune for that matter)
i did the same thing. every time i enter a new level, i call her phone. i know she never picks up, but the message is different. there's a different message if she's dead. every time i enter a new place, i need to know she's still out there. and on the starting screen.
Toby didnt just get famous, he achieved popularity close to that of Miyamoto, the creator of Mario for fucks sake. Imagine just eyes, millions and millions, an unending sea of eyes staring back at you, watching every movement, every slight flinch that you do. Eventually you just want to keep your eyes glued shut so you can never see those eyes again- but you will always know they are there. Its sad really, and i...cant imagine the type of deep emotional damage it could cause to the wrong person. I really, truely hope Toby is ok. You can very obviously see what sorta damage the fame caused him, based on his comments and writing from back during the kickstarter compared to his recent statements for Deltarune. Much more...formal. It lost any sense of...uniqueness or humour it held before. The fame almost ruined this man and thats really sad...
Dude, that kind of stress must be unreal. I have OCD (genetic and diagnosed before you tell me to take my edge to a therapist), and I'd literally kms if I'd have to deal with that insane amount of pressure.
In the recently released Undertale 5th anniversary vinyl record, Toby has a message in it. He says that he is extremely proud of the community, of all the remixes and universes and how the original Undertale seems to just be a minor part of the whole picture. He seems to be much much happier now about the whole situation
He’s tweeted about the development of deltarune and while he has admitted there is a lot of pressure, almost every tweet about it has been positive, saying that development is going smoothly and things like that.
man, ive been one of those people who's dived to the depts of undertale and all its rabbit hole, and seeing all the xtale, glitchtale, underverse, all those fan games, fan comics, fan music that i used to listen to, enjoy, be a part of suddenly resurface after leaving it all behind all that time ago felt so nostalgic and so magical, thank you so much for this video SEW, i wont claim to be an OG or someone big in this MASSIVE community known as undertale, but as someone who spent years just divulging into this community and all it had to offer brought back so many memories for me and reminded me of how it all started and how it ended when i left the community for good. sometimes i wonder what kind of a person i wouldve turned out had i never encountered undertale, or maybe never left the community but in the end im always glad to be the person i am at this current moment, moments like these make me realize how different i was back then and i wonder how old me wouldve felt if they knew what i was doing right now, happy, sad, who knows? but moments like these also remind me that, 'despite everything, im still me' thank you for making such an amazing video and thank you to toby fox and all the people in the undertale community for giving me an experience ill always cherish, and thank you for sparing time to read my comment. this isnt something you needed to do, you made the personal choice to read it through till the end, and i appreciate the beauty of that moment
What I find interesting about the peak of Undertale’s popularity is what happened with Sans. What was initially meant to be an existential character with a mysterious story ended up becoming nothing more than a Meme, much like Shrek. The fact that Matpat made one single video about “Sans being Ness” as evolved both Sans and Matpat into an iconic joke to anyone who knows them is insane to think about, even years later. So much that even people like Masahiro Sakurai and Toby Fox themselves aware of and has poked fun at it
Yeh I get what you mean. If you're in the fandom and actively look for the good stuff that was made with love, Sans as a character is one of the most interesting things people have done and explored. But with most of my friends who don't love UT as much as me, we just do the first few beats of Megalovania and go "haha funny mem."
I mean, I think that's a little unfair. Sure, Sans is a huge meme, but he only got that way because he's an interesting character that got popular, and he's still the most popular of the bunch for fan content by a country mile. A character can be both legit and a huge fucking meme.
At the end there were 3 versions of sans, the canon sans (the real, normal and the best, not a god, but not a weakling) the fanon sans (cringe), the meme sans (super powerful unstoppable unnatural force of nature that has no sense, you know CHAOS! Just like Jevil).
Most characters were put to the wayside once the Sans fight was discovered. but there are so many incredible moments and tracks people overlooked...at least for a little while. We got most homages to characters, and what-if stories. I like Glitchtale, as an example. Also, hi bun!
Fun fact: the one thing in undertale that strangely enough people have not taken advantage of or expanding on was a bonus character by the door in snowdin named Glyde. Ironically despite his bravado matching mettaton he became exactly what Toby intended gaster to be: a Hidden Mystery Character that remained a hidden mystery to the fan base; the one with the least amount of fan content out of all characters!
Not gonna lie to you right now.... I was literally thinking about Glyde AS I randomly found your comment about him. In fact, I've been trying to finish a pacifist run I'm on just so I can go back to Snowdin and encounter glyde. Even when I first started Undertale, I always wondered about that door. :) Makes me happy to know my suspicions held true.
I once met Toby Fox at a gaming convention in the early 2010s. I appreciated his music and mainly knew of him for his Earthbound hack, which was about the last thing he wanted to talk about. (It was only later that I learned he wanted to step away from it because of some unfortunate dialogue decisions.) He showed me some Undertale sketches, mostly I remember seeing the Dreemurr family. There was no Undertale kickstarter yet, and the most he had posted about it online were some rough mockups on an Earthbound forum. They were pretty cool early designs of course, but the sad thing is... I more or less tuned out. Here was this late-teenager gushing excitedly about what looked, to me, like his "furry OCs" and seemingly having moved on from a previous shared interest. There were hundreds at that convention just like him, and I was one of them, with my own obscure fan project to get excited about. And to this day I regret how dismissive I must've seemed. I backed the kickstarter and played the game in its first week. I loved it, as you'd expect. I shut off the game after getting the pacifist ending and thought of it as a wonderful little experience that I'd recommend to friends and those who liked the same kind of games as me. And then it blew up. It was startling to watch such a small work of love blast off into the stratosphere like Undertale. It's an inspiring and shocking success story, for a game that felt like it belonged as a hidden treasure tucked away in the libraries of Earthbound fans and similar. From those interviews it looks like he must've felt similarly. (People actually liked this thing THAT much? Average people, not just fans of this specific sort of thing? Wow!) I guess my point is, you never know who might be the next wonder-dog waiting to emerge from their cocoon and release something truly amazing. So treat them right, ok? Don't act like I did and just not care. That creativity needs care, like a happy little flower that totally isn't trying to murder you, and in time maybe it will grow into a big floating rainbow wizard-god. Dogspeed, wizard-god.
@@Lyubimov89 There's a few instances of "edgy teen" dialogue, and a homophobic slur is used by a villain towards the end. I feel it's still worth playing, but I get why he wouldn't think so.
y'know, when he said the UNDERTALE fandom was an abyss, I thought he meant something negative, but when I watched the video, I understood _completely_ what he means. The fandom is very fascinating and cool, but it sucks that people only focus on the bad parts. It's cool that Toby Fox actually said in his 5th anniversary that he loves how the game didnt feel like his own anymore, and that's a good thing. He loved how people made some many cool fanworks and content from his game, and appreciates them.
The Undertale Fandom is still going strong, which makes me really happy. Most of the toxic fans have moved to other fandoms, which im glad about, as the game didn't deserve that backlash in the first place.
I don't know about that I recently came across someone doing their first play through and as someone who enjoys the game but isn't a massive Fandom person I was like okay cool people have to be more willing to let people do what they want right. Nope less than 3 comments down "You have to do a pacifist blah blah blah"
Thats something i can agree I could've sworn that ships are getting less cringe for some reason i cant tell At least for me And since toxics left, new aus started to occur again Aus that we got for not that long: Underfell catastrophe (no idea wtf it is) Indie Cross Nightmare Mode Sans (the best fnf mod also gave undertale community a gift, a new sans) Undertale hacker ending (VHS Sans People thought he can even defeat error 404 but hes actually weaker) Wiki Sans (idk) Ut community is like TF2 community Still alive Survived toxic fan invasion Now we will make the community a better community
@Jimmy Jim why? Honestly there's a lot of good content in with the bad, ie voice acted things and animated, it's just an outlet people use to have an easy way to make something, even then if you put in the effort you can make something really good
this is such a massive trip down memory lane, and you mentioned every single important thing that being an undertale fan had to offer. this is absolutely an amazing video
So, the Undertale fandom is 10x more insane than I thought. But apparently, there's tons of skilled writers out there who really should be in the profession.
@@thewillowtree727 glitchtale is still cool. But, its absolutely going beyond what we ever expected. Its officially transcended undertale. Like how Oddity used to be the Mother 4 fangame, until it became it's own game.
I'm glad when you said "What if all aus got together" you mentioned Underverse (which i did not know of until now) instead of HELP_tale. HELP_tale is an underrated yet terrifying AU and i'm glad you did not stumble upon it and decided to introduce it to the viewers of this video.
All the memes and AUs etc. are just the manifestation of the expression "Take the idea and run with it". The game stopped giving, but it's still the game that keeps on giving. I suppose this is what great characters and a solidly built world can do when coupled with the creative force of the internet.
This is a whole part of the internet i never knew even existed. I’m starting to realize how vast internet communities can get without NOBODY knowing about it. Like this is MASSIVE but is far from being mainstream. I genuinely can’t get my head around that.
It’s not even that. There are probably more things that you don’t know about. Things that are just as big. And I’m not talking about Undertale, I’m talking the internet as a whole. It’s insane.
I'm not usually the one to comment on videos but i have to say that this is the best video essay I've seen. Undertale is one of my all time favourite games. I love the way this describes it. Its so good. Its exactly describes the experience of finding Undertale and finding its massive fandom. And I've been in this fandom since 2017-18. I even cried a little at the end lol.
"Despite everything, it's still you" might be one of the most powerful quotes that i have heard in life. Not because it is grand. It is so simple, a toddler could understand it. Because it came out of that language to an extend. It resonates so strongly because it can tap into you on so many levels. With or without context
toby fox probably saw the homestuck fandom and didn't want ANYTHING like that for undertale and that'a exactly what happened. i feel bad for the guy...
@@walidtaylor4227 idk if this is serious or not, but homestuck is a webcomic with animated portions and toby made a lot of the music in those portions himself. he was/is friends with the writer. the fandom has had enough bad eggs to ban people from cosplaying characters at conventions. in addition...a girl tried to dye her skin grey to cosplay one of the characters and she used sharpies and ended up in the hospital b/c of the fumes. there were a lot of issues with unsealed body paint that ruined a lot of cosplays and con venues and hotels. there's a video online of people spitting in a bucket at a restaurant because buckets are how a species in the series reproduces. and that's just SOME of the things that went on.
So many things about Undertale absolutely crushes me on a personal and emotional level, but Frisk's Pacifist run just..wrecks me. And that line. That line breaks me the most.

Wow..This video is an emotional rollercoaster. I was laughing, crying, feeling depressed, feeling hopeful. The Undertale fandom is truly something special and I can’t thank the game enough for simply existing. I really wish I was a fan when the game first came out so I could experience all this in real time. I’ve been wanting to make my own AU but can’t focus for long periods of time so I never bothered to try. I really hope that the Undertale fandom continues to grow and develop new amazing AUs to add to this crazy never ending list. Toby must be so proud yet so scared. I can’t even imagine what he must’ve been (and possibly still is) going through. I really hope he takes care of himself.
Me, four days ago: "I'm finally going to play this Undertale thing, see what all that hype has been about." Me, an hour ago: "Finally completed all three routes. Cool! I think I see why people like it so much, but maybe this video will help me understand it a little better." Me, finishing this video: "toby fox accidentally created a memetic fractal on a $50k budget that ate half the internet what the infinite fuck I need to take a walk"
The last dialogue happened to me after 3 years of drowning myself in in-game runs, let's-plays, AUs, music, and fanfics, which lessened to a near stop in 2018 when Deltarune was out. Looking back at everything now, it's stunning how the fandom has grown to that. Much more interesting is the fact that it's still up even now. I might dive into the fandom if I weren't so hesitant thanks to the "age best left in the past" vibe, but whatever happens happens I guess. Hooray to Undertale nonetheless ^ ^
Undertale became so popular because it's so heartwarming, calming and pleasing world. I've seen some aus and most of them are actually good, well animated, sometimes well written, actually some of them were amazing, but they are stories for themselves, even though they are literally aus. I can't really explain it well, but even though some aus are very well done, undertale has its own original unique charm that we will love and remember. After all, aus were created because people wanted more of undertale. It was certainly one of the most heartwarming and emotional games ever to be made. For me, Undertale is Undertale, and bad sides of the fanbase shouldn't affect on what we think of this beautiful game.
The only way I can see, how I can explore more of this fandom, is if I learn spanish and make a deep dive into Amino, because I literally absorbed the majority of knowledge the Undertale AU wiki can provide someone...

I have "Despite everything, it's still you" tattooed on my arm. I played Undertale after I came out and was being told by people I loved that they didn't know who I was anymore. That moment at the end of the game reminded me that no matter what happens, no matter how much I change, I'm still me. And I love this game for giving me that reassurance.
@@onyxsuccubus I'm so sorry that happened. Despite all of that, you're still you. And if you haven't heard it today, you are valid and valued. Thank you for being you.
For real tho i cannot imagine how hard creating deltarune must be for toby, knowing the expectations ppl have for it after undertale. Id defo break down in a week in his place
this is why it is especially CRITICALLY important that we don't push him any further while he works on it. I love, love, love delta rune, don't get me wrong. and i want more. but if we aren't careful, we will end up hurting him. We must be thankful for what he's given us, but we must not bite the hand that's fed us in a frenzy for content.
Yeah, which is why we are lucky that this fandom isn't like the Pokemon or Smash fandoms, where the very, VERY loud minority is never satisfied no matter how much content they're fed. Instead, that minority is very quiet as well as being a very small minority. They actually understand that the people creating the games we love have lives and feelings too.
I remember when deltarune first came out and there was already "deltarune AUs" going around, I don't know if that still exists cause I havent been connected with undertale for a long while now but I'd bet 5 million bucks that it does. That's what I like about the undertale community, everyone is so fixated on created their own work of art off of the base of a work of art itself, it's like a endless loop of festering creativity and it's very cool
@@unknownN30 That's a RELIEF. Undertale fans ran me out the fandom with their AU's and "Canon" headcanons.I'm actually starting to like Deltarune way more than undertale now.

It seems Toby's view on Undertale, is a lot like Oppenheimer's views on the nuclear bomb, he made it, but it grew to something he can't stop, and it scares him.

@@AsmodeusDHare yeah. I'm not surprised that he waited four years for things to calm down. The fandom was actually insane. Seriously. I used to be in it and it took me the entirity of 2019 to get out. It just keeps dragging me back i- WHY AM I HERE AGAIN NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

This video has reminded me why I love this game so much and why I love the best parts of the community. I came into it watching a random compilation of comic dubs and from those alone became so endeared to the characters. After playing it for myself falling into the rabbit hole of fanart, AUs, and ask blogs was so fun. I only wish I could go back and experience it all again. It's goofy, and a lot of it is just Sans, but it's also amazing in its own way.
other fandoms: lol what if this little detail about this character was changed, that would be pretty cool. i'm gonna make an AU about it the undertale fandom: _I'M ALREADY 47,826 PARALLEL UNIVERSES AHEAD OF YOU_
I think I've written an original AU, but I know it's not original because literally every prompt that I could think of has been already made. And my problem about the fandom is how if you make an au, it has to align with the " timelines. " for example, the adopt community. You can't do this, you can't do that, and that's how the multiverse undertale au community basically is. You can't do this. You can't do that. If you haven't caught up with every single detail, you'll be left in the dust. Take it from me, someone who got to escape the undertale rabbit hole and witness the hate the fandom has. ( I have not caught up with how it has changed today, so correct me if I'm wrong please )
This game is what inspired me to make videos and got me into game designing. I like looking back but honestly, the amount of AU's is what drives me away but the art, animation, community- maybe most of the community but not all is what makes the game amazing. The game itself inspired this amount of creativity makes me want to fall in love with undertale again. Great video btw

But it kind of makes sense, since getting more content from the game would only cause those characters pain people made their own content where they could have any outcome they wanted
@@coolgreenbug7551 It's almost strange because I feel that if there wasn't that line people wouldn't be so eager to create more possible outcomes and aus Like having the tingling discomfort of the characters being aware that they will not come back, so as it hurt to let go of that well developed universe and its characters, so people create more to never let the story ends It's like this whole fandom explosion of content is a response to a shared pain of letting go the original Undertale story Added cuz I couldn't miss the chance : ...but that's just a theory, a game theory
@@coolgreenbug7551 But that just takes the story and ending those characters get, pile drives it into the ground, spit gasoline on it and set it aflame.
I think that message was the message Toby intended you to see. The true message, however, is that you'll never "beat" or "outsmart" Undertale, the game is always one step ahead of you and knows your every move, keeping you more immersed in the story and creating the feeling that Undertale is no ordinary game. This is why the players struggle to hurt the characters - the game makes you feel guilt and remorse for such actions, which enforces the belief in their authenticity. Thus the community started to create even more content, because it wasn't bored of the game. Undertale wasn't something that we just finished and moved on from, the characters and story were so interesting and realistic, there was so much potential in them (and there still is). People just couldn't get enough of it, they wanted something to make them feel the same way Undertale did, but because the game only had so much content, they had to do it themselves. Toby probably never expected the impact his product would have on the Internet, even though when you think about it its only logical a game like Undertale (with lively personas and a thought out plot) was a recipe for success and popularity amongst users.
I honestly find the Undertale soundtrack to be probably the most emotionally powerful aspect of Undertale in my opinion. Most of the songs give me almost comforting chills and make me smile, and a few even put me on the verge of tears if I’m alone. Amazing job Toby
If you return to the ruins at the very end of the true pacifist route, you will get this piece of dialogue interacting with the mirror “Its still you, Frisk.” Or something like that, i already forgot.
What’s interesting is he started wanting to make a game about some cool character designs he saw on tumblr. Those designs were characters from Deltarune (lancer, Jevil, the king)
I think one thing I felt when I was playing this game on Genocide route was that the game made me realize how doing all those bad things didn't feel rewarding at all. I originally wanted to do genocide route because I wanted to beat Sans in the final fight, but I realized how I was working so hard for no reward. There was nothing waiting for me at the end of that hallway. It made me feel... empty.
Aaaaand that's exactly what the game wanted to teach people. That being determined, just for the sake of it, is a dangerous road that often leads to death and emptiness. That we sometimes just need to learn when to quit and cut our losses.
its so boring and monotonous to do a genocide run as you have to run around every room in the game and clear the monsters out. just run back and forth for hours
i finished my genocide run from start to finish in 4 hours, it really is not that long, 3 hours of that time was fighting sans, which DID feel very rewarding to achieve you're free to not enjoy the gratification of beating a difficult boss, but it definitely was a more enjoyable experience for me then the other routes
The overwhelming negativity was just a phase that all big fandoms go through in the opening stages. And, well, Undertale had one of the biggest fandoms EVER. How could it NOT go wrong. But here we are on the other side and the community (from what I've seen) is pretty great! I'm just hoping that Deltarune can use Undertale as a shield to avoid a similar thing happening.
It's a combination of immense scope + the audience mostly being kids and teenagers. This is also what led to so much unbound creativity and dedication, I think, but of course you're going to have problems as well. There's also a factor of like... I think this game has a special appeal for people who have/had a rough time of things, particularly at home. Undertale starkly acknowledges the potential for the player, in the role of a seemingly runaway child, to perpetuate the cycle of abuse and violence, but it makes sure the cost of this choice is deeply felt. I haven't personally gone through anything like that, but I can totally see what a source of consolation this game would feel like to someone who had. I say all this with real sympathy, but I also acknowledge that kids who are getting therapy from an indie game would probably not think twice about using everything associated with that property in a similar capacity, laying their problems onto fandom once the initial experience is over. Hurt people hurt people, as they say, even though Undertale demonstrates that they don't have to. Online it isn't as clear-cut as a FIGHT button and a MERCY button, even for well-adjusted folks.

One of the things I think that makes this a masterpiece is how hard the sans fight is. It’s a feeling of relief, just like what I’d imagine a serial killer with no real ties to anyone would feel

The fact that Sans' AUs are their own fandom with intricate lore and interactions is really a testament to the power of the Undertale fandom
and the people to.

I think that the reason behind Deltarune being released in small chapters may be what you talked bout at the end : to prevent too much hype at the same type, so that Toby Fox doesn’t need to go through the same thing.

This is the most relatable a RUclips comment has ever been for me
As someone who’s been a part of the Undertale Fandom ever since 2016, I can see how absolutely INSANE it would look from the outside.
Didn’t deltarune come out like, 2 years ago?
@Alex Munz oh I didn't know that, I'm happy to hear that they'll be another sequel !
Kyotosomo Luckily he’s said before that every chapter will be released as one game when they’re finished, so I don’t think that’ll be a problem
Thank you for making this.

Undertale is a great game. It has a great community (at least mostly) and has a lot of fans.
“Despite everything, it’s still you.”

Over all this is just my opinion.
It's so cool to see the years of knowledge of my past fandom all thrown at me again in 30 minutes and still being able to remember everything
Great way to put it!
Yes I can state a good fact here
Ink sans is dumb and we all know that.
That's the sad truth about the fandom. These groups are supposed to praise what they love, only that their obsession becomes the thing that tear down apart once they are hostile which it's unhealthy and lead them to hurt anyone.
That’s what Undertale has become. There is only sans, and megalovania left. There’s no saving it, since the community killed it off anyways.

Exactly the same for me, too!
This is why I couldn’t finish it
Oh yeah, Undertale is all about guilt, anything you do Flowey will point out or at the very least will be hinted at in the game with how the characters react to you and how Frisk reacts to them.
I hope Toby's okay... I can't even begin to imagine that kind of pressure.
Edit: I've heard he seems okay now, no worry needed.
I got chills when Toby said "My life is changed forever" something like that... Just think about that man...

Fun fact: the one thing in undertale that strangely enough people have not taken advantage of or expanding on was a bonus character by the door in snowdin named Glyde. I once met Toby Fox at a gaming convention in the early 2010s. I appreciated his music and mainly knew of him for his Earthbound hack, which was about the last thing he wanted to talk about. (It was only later that I learned he wanted to step away from it because of some unfortunate dialogue decisions.)
He showed me some Undertale sketches, mostly I remember seeing the Dreemurr family.
Wow!)
I guess my point is, you never know who might be the next wonder-dog waiting to emerge from their cocoon and release something truly amazing. So treat them right, ok? This is a whole part of the internet i never knew even existed. I’m starting to realize how vast internet communities can get without NOBODY knowing about it. Like this is MASSIVE but is far from being mainstream. I genuinely can’t get my head around that.

There are probably more things that you don’t know about. Things that are just as big. And I’m not talking about Undertale, I’m talking the internet as a whole. It’s insane.

Welcome to the lighter side of my hell
That's also probably my favorite single line from the game, and I love whenever other people recognize it too.
Its a perfect mirror lol
That moment leading to hearing ASGORE still gives me goosebumps
It chokes me up everytime I read it.
Not going to lie, when he read that line out loud, I got chills.

and that's just SOME of the things that went on.

Aside from Undyne’s, lines during her monologue, all of Asriel’s, lines, it’s my favorite line in the game for me as well, but i also really like “YOUR GOING TO HAVE TO TRY A LITTLE HARDER THEN THAT.” “Human... no whatever you are, for the sake of the world, I Undyne, will strike you down.” Howdy Chara, are you there it’s me your best friend A S R I E L D R E E M U R R.” “I i don’t wanna let go.” “Do you not have anything better to do?.” “If you keep going down this path.
To be fair, Toby’s experience with Homestuck should have given him some idea what was to come.

In a nutshell: undertale's iceberg never stops going down, and down, and down...
The Iceberg is now a planet.
And many have barely scratched the surface.
The only way I can see, how I can explore more of this fandom, is if I learn spanish and make a deep dive into Amino, because I literally absorbed the majority of knowledge the Undertale AU wiki can provide someone...

but if we aren't careful, we will end up hurting him.
It's goofy, and a lot of it is just Sans, but it's also amazing in its own way.

Ironic that a game whose message is in part, "let the story go when you finish it," led to this response
But it kind of makes sense, since getting more content from the game would only cause those characters pain people made their own content where they could have any outcome they wanted
@@coolgreenbug7551 It's almost strange because I feel that if there wasn't that line people wouldn't be so eager to create more possible outcomes and aus
Like having the tingling discomfort of the characters being aware that they will not come back, so as it hurt to let go of that well developed universe and its characters, so people create more to never let the story ends
It's like this whole fandom explosion of content is a response to a shared pain of letting go the original Undertale story
Added cuz I couldn't miss the chance : ...but that's just a theory, a game theory
This is similar what happened to the Evangelion fan base.

The overwhelming negativity was just a phase that all big fandoms go through in the opening stages. And, well, Undertale had one of the biggest fandoms EVER. How could it NOT go wrong. But here we are on the other side and the community (from what I've seen) is pretty great! I'm just hoping that Deltarune can use Undertale as a shield to avoid a similar thing happening.
a certain salesman and a cat lady didnt get it good 😭😭
It's a combination of immense scope + the audience mostly being kids and teenagers.
