This is the kind of show that when you go see it, if you just disconnect your brain and not really think about it, you'll really smile and laugh. It's not super deep or anything, but I've always appreciated it.
Same. I Don't Really Enjoy The Movie At All Infact, I'm Listening To I Know It's Today. The Musical Made More Sense Anyway. And I Liked It More. I Agree With You.
I've always enjoyed Shrek. It has some great moments that parody the musical theatre genre, in the same way that the film parodies and references other films. If you don't take it too seriously as a show, I think it's a fun piece of theatre.
James Bailey Much agreed. I think some of Shrek's strongest points are when it parodies other pieces of musical theatre. Also, it's always worth remembering that I am by NO means Shrek's intended audience and so, naturally, there will be parts that don't "speak" to me. The song about farts, for instance.
+Musical Theatre Mash I actually enjoy those parts of it as well. and the fart things are for the intended child audience. the costumes are fantastic. most of the songs are well written. like shreks power ballad of build a wall. many great power ballads that really take the children intended story deeper into the characters and give it a deeper meeting.
I hate how you keep dissing this show. Honestly the acting is great, the numbers are incredible, and the costumes are really well done. Yes there is room for improvement, but this is a great musical and I don't understand how you don't have good things to say about this musical. God, I love this musical so much more that the movie.
Your criticisms are weak, repeating the same thing over and over gets old mate... Also, you didn't say anything about some of the best songs like "who id be" and "build a wall." Your review was as boring as you thought the musical was.
I actually played Princess Fiona, and it was amazing. The show is beautifully written and heartbreaking if you actually pay attention, not berate everything. It's a beautiful musical and listening to this guy nagging and whining because of the movie makes my ears bleed
I got to do this musical over the summer with an incredibly talented cast. It was one of my favorite musicals to perform ever as well as a life experience that I'll never forget. You can't argue that the cast wasn't having a great time doing this.
You're knocking the show down for every small problem. It would have been a better critique if you actually focused on the show itself, and not the fact that it's shrek or the small problems with the show. Of course there are some negatives to this show, but the critique didn't even say anything about the great acting (Literally all the main characters), the great set, and the really touching songs, like "That's Who I'd Be" or "Big Bright Beautiful World". Like I said again, a lot of the songs felt like filler, but if you would just look at the show from the perspective of not shaming the show for every slight mistake and instead of looking at both the good and the bad, this is a very decent show.
Spongeycraft agreed! I get so frustrated watching this because I feel that with a fair shake, this is a pretty good show. It’s no Les Mis, but what is?
Look I think you're really cute. And I appreciate somebody actually takes time to make a well-thought youtube channel/vlogg about musical theatre, wich is my life. And I'm well aware that this video is almost 2 years long. But let me tell you: SHREK THE MUSICAL IS REALLY GOOD. At the beggining I also didn't have a lot of hopes on it but it simply shut my mouth. And I'm happy it did. When you watch a show, even if you have prejudices about it you leave them at the door and get in with a blank slate. You don't carry them with you all along the whole damn thing. There were pretty awesome aspects of it that you didn't consider. And if you get to hear a couple of times the soundtrack you'd learn that the music is great too. Let me guess... You feel the exact same thing with the upcoming Sponge Bob musical. And then again, I'll give it a shot. You'd be even cuter if you weren't that much of a cranky snob. My regards fella'
Yes, I want more original musicals! I've watched several of your videos today, having just discovered your channel, and I'm already in love with you! ;-) Great minds think alike!
This musical is actually really good, and if you looked past the “oh, it’s just a dumb meme movie made into a musical” it has a really beautiful meaning of accepting yourself despite of what others say or do. That no matter who you are, you can find your happy ending. Honestly, this is one of my favorite musicals, meme or not. It’s well written, has amazing actors, and good comedic charm. If you can’t see past it’s “Shreky” charm, than okay, that’s your opinion, but stop bashing it to the point where people who haven’t seen it won’t even give it a chance.
This guy needs to shut up and needs to stop saying negative things about this show, it is amazing, theres no possible way he can't say these actors were amazing. And many people see the show before the movie, because it's a amazing, funny, and cute show
Just discovered your channel and I think you're brilliant. Watched two or three vids. Small quibbles in others, but here you go too far with the initial caustic schtick and then carry it to the end. Shrek is easy to fish-in-a-barrel poo-poo for its silliness and twee self-parody....but the lyrics are admirable throughout and Janine Tesori's score, by any real standard, is brilliant. Guess you missed that part. lol
It's always been bizarre to me that DreamWorks has a perfectly good Stephen Schwartz musical in "Prince of Egypt", and yet they brought this to Broadway instead.
Mentioning Disney and Broadway reminded me that I recently read about Disney's production of Frozen for Broadway that I think comes out in 2016-ish? I'll be interested to see how it goes down, at least.
You know, hate on it all you want. I know it sounds stupid on paper, but that show is one of my favorites. It has a really great message and some pretty awesome songs. (I prefer the traveling show's dragon and her song, but whatever, that's the one I saw so I'm happy.) Shrek the Musical sounds silly, but it's one of the smartest shows I've ever seen.
I couldn't agree more with this because about two weeks ago, my highs school did Shrek Jr and we thought it was so bad we mad a song about it called Shrek The Wreck. Granted we only had a months time to put it together but none of us wanted to do it in the first place. Especially since we were going to do Footloose originally
I think it's a perfectly fine musical if you don't take it super seriously when watching it. You wouldn't judge a movie like Anchorman the same way you would an oscar-nominated film but Anchormans still an awesome movie, I think the same approach has to be taken to Shrek the musical. I saw it when my school did a production of it and it was fantastic
This is actually the first professional musical I ever saw live I was in the second or third grade and my grandma took me and my best friend to see it so it has a special place in my heart:)))
6:44 is made even better by the fact that John Tartaglia, the actor for Pinnochio, is a famous puppeteer. So it's a cookie puppet talking to a puppeteer pretending to be a puppet who thinks he's a boy.
I love how polarizing this show is with its audiences. I personally love this musical, thought I was going to hate it but I loved it. I get where you and all others who dislike this are coming from but i don't know, I always find it so enjoyable and actually quite moving
Let me just say that I did this musical one year ago locally, and it was easily one of the most fun musicals I've ever been in. It was super well casted, and I'm still quoting parts from it today
I saw this in a 7pm musical theatre class (actually started playing closer to 8) while recovering from alcohol poisoning (long story) I was delirious the whole time and wasn't sure how much was real you're not alone on the fever dream thought
Not gonna lie, I love Shrek the Musical. I hate the movie, but boy is the musical fun. Maybe it's because I was a part of a really fun production of it that I remember fondly, but I love it.
My junior high always lets students vote for the spring musical. One of the choices this year is Shrek Jr. and everyone voted for it. Thank god that I graduated from the school last year because I don't think I could have standed listening to this everyday for 2 hours for a month straight.
this might be a ridiculous question, but where do you watch the musicals you review? I've enjoyed listening to musical for forever, don't get the chance to go out and see many, and I don't always trust film adaptations, though i've seen many. Thank you for saving me the time of sitting through this. And with fun commentary! Cheers. I am an accompanist - and now, the next time someone tells me how great Shrek The Musical is … I can give them a raspberry.
I personally liked Shrek the Musical. It is meant to be a satire, poking fun at Disney princess movies. Artfully, and often subtly, the songs contain double entendres, "...manly hose", and musical motifs from other musicals or songs; I.e. Close Encounters of the Third Kind, William Tell Overture, Gypsy, Wicked, just to name a few. It's a fun show and even more fun if you have kids and want to expose them to the joy of theatre.
Erin Tappan if you don't mind me asking are you doing full makeup, Or are you doing a simplified version? We are thinking about doing this at our high school.
I'm probably going to keep it simple and rely mostly on hats and stuff. Unless I end up getting a ton of help with parent volunteers or something like that, in which case I'd be willing to go full green. :)
I was in a production of this. My sister was in it twice. She got a call back for Fiona and had to be stuck with ensemble on her SENIOR YEAR just because the other choice "wasn't as busy" even tho none of her other things would interfere. Plus the other stuff was theater related soo
I thought this was going to be a terrible attempt at a musical but after I actually sat down and watched it, I liked it and find myself listening to a few songs every now and then, like "who I'd be" and "I think I got you beat"
K but like lyrics aside because of the show it is, the score is so great. Who I'd Be? Build a Wall? Freak Flag is such a great piece of modern music, and is very good. PS- how is being sent away on Christmas Eve worse than your Birthday? Day before gifts or the day they birthed you?
I honestly think this person auditioned for shrek and they gave him the bishop and after that he started hating on the Musical. I was Fiona in the full version and it was the best experience of my life and that's pretty good for just a ten year old like me
I never saw the Shrek movies, and I decided to watch this because my school is putting it on and I really ended up loving it, "Who I'd Be" is hands down the best song :P
This guy's lame, overly-rehearsed-in-the-mirror-prior-to-hitting-record reactions are much more difficult to watch than the musical he's berating. I give this review -1 out of 5,793,097 stars.
I can absolutely see why you don't like this show, but it did kind of win me over. But Spongebob is soooooooo much better. Spongebob was the anti Shrek Musical. Totally agree with you about Sutton Foster. Although interestingly she says this was one of her favourite roles.
I was high as fuck when I saw this on Netflix. All I remember was laughing my ass off, riffing loudly, and the big bad wolfs story arc. It was also 2:00 am.
Dang. he’s getting so much hate for not liking this show. Well, I actually agree with everything he said here! I grew up watching and loving the Shrek films (well, the first two), and I really don’t like this musical either. I really wanted to like it! I heard good things about it. When, I watched it on Netflix...I was bored. I thought it dragged on too long. The song seem like they’re there just for the sake of having a song there. The dance numbers are also forced and unmotivated. I like Sutton Foster and Brian D’arcy James but, in my opinion, their talents are wasted here. Except for “Who I’d Be”, I didn’t find any of the songs memorable. If you enjoy this musical, that’s great! But it’s just not for me
This is the kind of show that when you go see it, if you just disconnect your brain and not really think about it, you'll really smile and laugh. It's not super deep or anything, but I've always appreciated it.
I paid a lot of money for good seats to see the show and it was worth every penny
Izzy Rudy yes it was amazing
Izzy Rudy I agree, this show was incredible, I saw it on broadway in the 2nd row, and I watch it almost every day on Netflix
AG Wishes I watched it last night
Izzy Rudy awesome! Did you like it?
I'm so happy I'm not the only one who likes this musical 😊
I enjoy shrek the musical more then actual shrek
+pocky bear same but some details could of been added from the movie. but only because thoses certain details were awesome yet left out
Dead pleb same!!
Same. I Don't Really Enjoy The Movie At All Infact, I'm Listening To I Know It's Today. The Musical Made More Sense Anyway. And I Liked It More. I Agree With You.

I think this guy is making himself hate the musical even more.
Nerd Kid 2005 amen
I dont blame him them though the original movie 2001 was funnier enough
No reaction to "Who I'd Be"?
Who I'd be is my entire cast's favorite. It's so heartbreaking and beautiful and just aaahhhh
ByNoOneMoreThanMe The version I did took that entire song out.
because he cant fault it hahah
this musical was great.....
AMEN
It Was I Agree
it was cool
the show
Exactly!
I hate how you keep dissing this show. Honestly the acting is great, the numbers are incredible, and the costumes are really well done. Yes there is room for improvement, but this is a great musical and I don't understand how you don't have good things to say about this musical. God, I love this musical so much more that the movie.
"It's got elements of a fine musical. It's just Shrek." That pretty much sums up my thoughts on it too.
"Tap dancing rats." THE RATS ON THE STREET ALL DANCE AROUND MY FEET
#1fanofoz how did i not know that i'd find an oz fan here!!
Oh hello oz human it's nice to see you here too
Your criticisms are weak, repeating the same thing over and over gets old mate... Also, you didn't say anything about some of the best songs like "who id be" and "build a wall." Your review was as boring as you thought the musical was.
+John Whitmen I totaly agree!!
John Whitmen Opinions, amiright
John Whitmen I just wanna see him write a musical
Talya That Dancer weak argument. If something is professional it should be good. I mean I agree just your argument is weak
Talya That Dancer Theres a difference between writing a musical and adapting a movie into one
I actually played Princess Fiona, and it was amazing. The show is beautifully written and heartbreaking if you actually pay attention, not berate everything. It's a beautiful musical and listening to this guy nagging and whining because of the movie makes my ears bleed
Go to 5:56 if you want his actual opinion. He agrees that it has a nice message, but it has many flaws which are hard to look past, and I agree.
7:56*
Coaster Critic what flaws
AHHH, I played Fiona in my high school production, such a fun role :)
Zoe Blake I think he just already hated it from the get-go. It's not the best musical but it's much better than he's making it seem.
I got to do this musical over the summer with an incredibly talented cast. It was one of my favorite musicals to perform ever as well as a life experience that I'll never forget. You can't argue that the cast wasn't having a great time doing this.

"More screaming? calm down!"
Me: this is SHREK the musical. They can't calm down.
Tommy: "I hope Dreamworks Theatricals hasn't done anything else"
Me: *eyeing Prince of Egypt musical in the works with hope* Well, never say never...
Look I think you're really cute. And I appreciate somebody actually takes time to make a well-thought youtube channel/vlogg about musical theatre, wich is my life. Funny to laugh at his reaction but ikr! I personally love this show and the idea of a spongebob musical
I honestly liked the musical far more than the movie. My cousin gives me a strange look every time I put the musical on, but I love it.
Moral of the Story: Tell your congressman, you want more original musicals.
Yes, I want more original musicals! I've watched several of your videos today, having just discovered your channel, and I'm already in love with you! ;-) Great minds think alike!
“...Sutton Foster having a fever dream.” I will be chuckling about that all day.

Ella Healy Cause opinions am I right? People just can't have some.
This is an amazing show! You're missing out by hating on it.

I only started taping mic chords to my neck after watching this and imaging Tommy telling me to "fix your microphone chord".
I don't understand how someone can be so grumpy throughout such a joyful musical
I want to see what you think about the sequel to Phantom of the Opera, "Love Never Dies". Can you do a reaction video to that?
YOURE ALWAYS COMPLAINING EVERY SECOND OF THE SHOW
It's always been bizarre to me that DreamWorks has a perfectly good Stephen Schwartz musical in "Prince of Egypt", and yet they brought this to Broadway instead.
Right, bro. We have people like you in every corner of entertainment. I just question myself how I got to this corner.
I don't know what I expected. I may never sleep again.
Mentioning Disney and Broadway reminded me that I recently read about Disney's production of Frozen for Broadway that I think comes out in 2016-ish? I'll be interested to see how it goes down, at least.
EmmaRose Disney needs to stop milking money out of Frozen.
You know, hate on it all you want. I know it sounds stupid on paper, but that show is one of my favorites. It has a really great message and some pretty awesome songs. (I prefer the traveling show's dragon and her song, but whatever, that's the one I saw so I'm happy.)
Shrek the Musical sounds silly, but it's one of the smartest shows I've ever seen.
Emma Young damn ma, it’s just his opinion
I saw Shrek the musical when this show went on tour
I still can't believe you left out Who I'd Be, that one gets me every time
My first impression was “ this doesn’t need to exist”, but I enjoyed watching it and i also had SO MUCH FUN playing Fiona in this show
I couldn't agree more with this because about two weeks ago, my highs school did Shrek Jr and we thought it was so bad we mad a song about it called Shrek The Wreck. I like Shrek the Musical more than the original Shrek. I am actually doing Shrek the Musical at my school. And I got Donkey!
same, i prefer the musical. and my school is doing shrek too! i'm one of the three little pigs :)
I love how polarizing this show is with its audiences. I personally love this musical, thought I was going to hate it but I loved it. I get where you and all others who dislike this are coming from but i don't know, I always find it so enjoyable and actually quite moving

You can see how hard he is trying to hate it
I saw this in a 7pm musical theatre class (actually started playing closer to 8) while recovering from alcohol poisoning (long story)
I was delirious the whole time and wasn't sure how much was real
you're not alone on the fever dream thought
This damn thing also won a Tony for it's costumes, GROAN! I would have picked Hair instead.
Even the costumes seem to me a case of, "just because you can, doesn't mean you should." The choreography is little more than stomping about
Not gonna lie, I love Shrek the Musical.
I did stage crew so it would have made it worse lol
I was at the taping of Shrek The Musical .
it was probably the funnest time I've had in years
I did because I was in Shrek not once, but twice
I may be years late to this party, but you're my current favorite thing.
My friend got me this on DVD for Christmas.
The arsehole.
this might be a ridiculous question, but where do you watch the musicals you review? I've enjoyed listening to musical for forever, don't get the chance to go out and see many, and I don't always trust film adaptations, though i've seen many. I would love to see more stage versions like what I see in your videos. (I'm okay with paying or renting!) Thanks, love your channel! :)
For the record when I was small, before I knew anything about anything, I remember thinking “oh my god u can just tell the audience what’s going on through DIALOGUE?” I wasn’t very smart back then
I still sob violently sometimes when I think about the time I was in shrek the musical. It was... The absolute worst thing.
I subscribed from this video. Been loving the videos you've made, keep it up!
the production out in Seattle at the 5th avenue ws so much better than what ended up onm Broadway. i was there for it.
I was in shrek. It was a surreal hellscape of a play.
Thank you for saving me the time of sitting through this. And with fun commentary! Cheers. I am an accompanist - and now, the next time someone tells me how great Shrek The Musical is … I can give them a raspberry.
This was my first musical and it is one of my favorite musicals
'It's not a finale without confetti.' Sweeney Todd? And confetti? Hell yes.
This is such an accurate description of how I feel about this musical
I personally liked Shrek the Musical. It is meant to be a satire, poking fun at Disney princess movies. Artfully, and often subtly, the songs contain double entendres, "...manly hose", and musical motifs from other musicals or songs; I.e. Close Encounters of the Third Kind, William Tell Overture, Gypsy, Wicked, just to name a few. It's a fun show and even more fun if you have kids and want to expose them to the joy of theatre.
I'm about to direct the junior version of this show for a middle school show. Condensed down to about a hour, it's really not that bad.
Yes, and it is on Netflix. Also, I saw the Jr. version at a local high school production.
Fever Dream. So glad I found this!
I was in a production of this. My sister was in it twice. She got a call back for Fiona and had to be stuck with ensemble on her SENIOR YEAR just because the other choice "wasn't as busy" even tho none of her other things would interfere. Plus the other stuff was theater related soo
I remember doing Shrek the Musical in middle school and I was a fairytale as well as a Duloc dancer. It was a weird experience to say the least.
its funny because this was actually my first musical as a kid
Honestly this musical is hands down in my top 5 favorite musicals
I saw it in Chicago because my family dragged me along me and you genuinely had the same reaction
This show is very close to my heart
I thought this was going to be a terrible attempt at a musical but after I actually sat down and watched it, I liked it and find myself listening to a few songs every now and then, like "who I'd be" and "I think I got you beat"
Dreamworks Theatricals has made something else and that's the phenomenal stage adaptation of The Prince Of Egypt.
I just realized little children actually went to this show.
So much nightmare fuel.
Misa Tange no
shrek the musical was my life in kindergarten
I really love Shrek the Musical for its music, humor, and character development.
I would never pay money for this show BUT I think if I was with a friend or something it would be really fun
*proceeds to watch the original movie again to take her mind off this adaptation*
The short answer to "Why?" is "Broadway producers are both greedy and risk-averse."
This guy's lame, overly-rehearsed-in-the-mirror-prior-to-hitting-record reactions are much more difficult to watch than the musical he's berating.
I give this review -1 out of 5,793,097 stars.
+Russel Rivinius …I …but …I don't even own a mirror.
+Musical Theatre Mash I still love ya Mash!!!!
I can absolutely see why you don't like this show, but it did kind of win me over. But Spongebob is soooooooo much better. Spongebob was the anti Shrek Musical. Totally agree with you about Sutton Foster. Although interestingly she says this was one of her favourite roles.
lol my summercamp is doing a dance this week for the song "freak flag" it's in this musical 😂😂
we did this as our high school musical this year. 1 word can describe it-bad.
I was high as fuck when I saw this on Netflix. All I remember was laughing my ass off, riffing loudly, and the big bad wolfs story arc. It was also 2:00 am.
Maybe Shrek the Musical is just a mass fever dream that we all had
I think some songs are actually incredible, and then you have songs like "Got you beat" where it's like "oh right. It's SHREK."
"*gasp* Shrek takes new york! God no. Please no.Never let that never be a thing."
I WAS SHREK AT MY SCHOOL'S PRODUCTION OF SHREK THE MUSICAL
We did shrek the musical jr. For the musical at my school this year
‘He’s short🙂 Hilarious😐’ 😂
I watched this last night. It’s so GOOD!
Random question, when you say 'misappropriation of a genre' to which genre do you refer?
So he doesn't like a show you like. No. One. Cares.
Did you notice, OPINION!!!!!
Dang. he’s getting so much hate for not liking this show. Well, I actually agree with everything he said here!
