Just running into this comment a year later - how do you like the pilot day date a year later? Looking for a new field watch and leaning towards this one.
@@emainz1 To be honest: after a while, I did sell it because I saw another watch that got my attention. That one did have a moon phase complication. For the time that I wore the Khaki Pilot, I liked it very much. This was my very first Swiss watch, and I absolutely love it. Sometimes, while sitting on a plane flying somewhere, I’ll just admire the light play. I liked it so much I bought the Murph as well (orig. larger one), and it’s equally stunning. Really happy I got both, even though they ended up being a “gateway” for me (and my wallet).

After years of drooling over this one I finally pulled the trigger. I saw an American Railroad Classic on sale for $360 last week, looked nice and was a great price for a Hamilton auto so I ordered one out of curiosity… The Jazzmaster I’ve always wanted showed up instead, I ordered this the next day. 😋 Hamilton started my love affair with watches when I was just a little kid and saw Rod Sterling wearing his Ventura on The Twilight Zone (the first Hamilton I bought btw) so I definitely have a soft spot for them.

It's not a ridiculously expensive watch but I would recommend hunting on the secondary market for a pre owned one in good condition. I'm not a bracelet guy so I swapped the bracelet with a nice black leather strap

I’ve got a lot of watches but keep coming back to Hamilton. This series of watches with the applied raise numbers is absolutely stunning. I have 3 variations of this one, all with sapphire crystal and not a scratch anywhere after several years of use. This watch may be on my radar as my next watch. The recent offers Ings from Hamilton don’t fancy me as much. But this watch is stunning. Also interested in the larger 46 mm variant.
Ended up getting the 46mm version. I was afraid the watch would be too big, if there is such a thing😂. It is awesome! It IS big, but I’m a big guy and I think I can pull it off. The band is 22mm and therefore the proportions are spot on. The watch, face, and band are perfect, tight, perfectly finished…another stunner from Hamilton. Although I just can’t get too excited by most other hamiltons, I now have 4 of these. Crazy nice. I’m terms of comparison, I have an Oris big crown pro pilot, a Junghans pilot meister, an Alpina Big date startimer, a Filson field watch (one of my favorites) and some other miscellaneous watches….this series of Hamilton surpasses all,of them in terms of finish and style. I love all of them, but these are wow! I have decided to wear the 46 mm version as my daily driver at work (airline pilot).
Amazing review! Just bought this beautiful piece at Brentmillertime in Lancaster PA, birthplace of Hamilton. Yesterday was Hamilton’s 130th anniversary and I met the CEO of Hamilton who had the Murph prop watch and made a demo. I have the video!
This review convinced me to buy this...this is my first watch and I've found your channel very informational! Thanks for wide variety of options and ideas!
Yes, Hamilton is very well represented in film. From Elvis wearing a Hamilton Ventura in Blue Hawaii (1961) to Liam Hemsworth wearing a Hamilton Khaki X-Wind automatic chronograph in Independence Day: Resurgence (2016). Some of the other films featuring Hamilton watches include Bat*21 (1988), Spider-Man 2 (2004), Quantum of Solace (2008), Predators (2010), The Avengers (2012), Taken 2 (2012) and Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit (2014).
Love your reviews, keep up the great work. I’m a watch collector/aficionado myself. I just purchased this watch today and I love it plus “Interstellar” is one of my favorite movies and Matthew McConaughey did an incredible job acting. Mine has the solid rotor just like yours in the review with the plus and minus adjustments for the watchmakers to calibrate it if need be and that IS the ETA 2834-2 movement, not the H-40 movement as you explained in the video about your watch. The ETA 2834-2 movement is a far superior movement and also beats at 28,800 which results in a much smoother seconds hand. They made this watch also with the H-40 movement but that one has a rotor with an “H” cutout in it and only has 21,600 BPH with a sloppy seconds hand and a slightly higher power reserve. The seconds hand to be smoother is way more important than the slightly higher power reserve so both of our watches are better than the H-40 version of it. Cheers!
Great to see this review after 3 years again. I just bought this watch because I absolutely love value for money timepieces. Nowadays I also own Rolexes and AP but I always come back to brands like Hamilton as I just cannot refuse these offers!
I remember when i started following you when you have only a couple of thousand subscribers, and now, your community has already 100k subscribers! Thanks for keeping with this hard work, TGV, and for being so committed with this huge community. Greetings from Spain! PD. I have a little suggestion. Everyone here knows your background on music and your deep knowledge on classic music and ópera. Would you start a weekly/monthly series about music? I´m dying for listen to you speaking on this matter. Anyway, thanks again!
Thank you Mario so much for the loyal support. Truly and deeply appreciated. As for music and cultural content, I will certainly think about it. Best regards, TGV
Just purchased mine today, I was on the fence after seeing it a few weeks ago at my local Hamilton dealer, but after seeing this I fell in love with it! I think for my wrist 40-42mm fits perfectly.
100k well done TGV so happy for you, I have been watching your videos for over 2 years now and you have been the sole reason for my huge watch interest thank you and keep going!
Watches such as this one makes me think I need to add a Hamilton to my collection. I don't have a pilot's watch and I like this one's "tooly elegance" as you put it. I also like several in their Jazzmaster line. Nice review. Oh, and Interstellar is definitely a good movie. Ciao, John
Good day Governor, I've really taken to your channel, it is just so refreshing to find a very passionate person in our "modern world" that sees the importance of tradition and gentlemanly standard. I've enjoyed each video seen thus far and I must say your computer screen art has caught my eye...so much so that I tried searching for images of classic masterpieces but to no avail, only to realise that you actually did share Artwork Packs (that unfortunately I've missed on all occasions). It would be very magnificent if you made these available again because I'm sure i cant be the only one. I am beginning the journey of starting my watch collection and feel very happy to know I have such a knowledgeable person like yourself to rely on in navigating the vast world of horology. Keep up the exceptional work my brother.
I love my Intersteller watch. The 80 power reserve from the powermatic movement does make the sweep slightly less smooth, but defintely adds utility to the watch.
Watching this for the 5th or 50th time, not certain these days. This watch has been my next purchase for months, but being a full time single dad and reserve cop with a modest at best day job, I had to be patient. Just before this whole panic, I was set to start a new better paying job. I applied for it in December, I received my clearance, but because of the panic I was delayed. Then my current job shut down and furloughed us without pay. My plan for months had been to get this watch the day I got my start date for the new job as a celebration. However that has also been delayed. So I am glad I at least can watch this and know I will eventually enjoy this beautiful piece of engineering.
The combination of traditional and innovative design sold me before I’d even seen the wstch. I’ve been wearing mine for two days now and the on wrist experience has been amazing. I’m beginning to better understand the tradeoffs made between traditional lume the faceted applied markers on the prominent seconds chapter. They are pure genius, providing neon bright visibility in almost any light level. The color of the ambient light source is reflected back in beautiful jewel-like ambers, greens, blues, etc. Absolutely unique! Lume has its uses, but in addition to being beautiful the applied numerals are much more utilitarian in all light levels except total darkness. The watch as a whole feels great; a luxury timepiece, a 1st class movement, but with the DNA of a toolwatch.
Hello TGV! I was trying to decide on a first automatic for few months now.. Needless to say, after watching the review (more than) a couple of times, i went to the local AD and got myself an early birthday present (even if a bit overpriced here compared to US/UK). Thanks for the inspiration and keep up the (Inter)stellar work ! :)
Great video! Well done! I bought this Watch several years ago, and this review was one of the main reasons. Unfortionatly I sold it after just one year. Since then I’ve had several different watches in different price segments, but I really regret selling this. Today I stumbled over this video again, and knew I had to have this watch. So right after I fineshed watching the vid, I ordered it from the nearest AD. Can’t wait! Cheers!
I had this watch for over a year. I buy this one because it will probably be the most iconic watch ever in the history of cinema and I really really like Interstellar, that having a story actually related to watches, time, love and space in one piece.
SO I sold off most of my collection and decided to focus on seiko, now I bought back my Visodate and crave the khaki field 38mm... Now this watch and the hamilton jazzmaster gmt silver dial... Hamilton are stunning, the designs are gorgeous and honestly I'm tempted to sell up all for the gmt! Definitely underrated compared to many other swiss brands!
Hi TGV! I just wanted to say thank you. I am buying my first serious watch as I turn 40 and this is the one. I was watching a lot of your's and other's videos trying to decide and then I saw this... I absolutely love Interstellar and movies in general (I just finished building a theater room in my basement in fact) and my jaw dropped when the intro to this video started. Decision made! Anyway, thanks again man. Your enthusiasm is absolutely infectious and you've done me a massive solid by making this review.
I've got one and have had it for close to 5 years now. It's an incredible piece, really hits the mark for me and then some. To me it's almost perfect, and I actually sold off my other watches simply because I was only wearing this one. Only recently have I begun to acquire more pieces, but this was my only watch for several years and I didn't really want anything else for quite some time because of how well it hit the mark for me. It has an immense amount of sentimental value now as well, it's been with me through a ton of different career and personal milestones.
Just ordered this model with a black leather strap. Beat the bushes for the best price and got it for $694.00. I repair antique clocks for a hobby and I am around watch enthusiasts as well, so I am familiar with quality watches. I Have owned a few older Hamilton wrist watches and have always been enamored with the looks and the build quality. I am retired now, was an aviation electrician in the navy, so I felt it appropriate to get this model. Never did fly but worked the F-14 simulator as a technician after retirement from the navy and used to fly the F-14 simulator every shift as part of the operational evaluations performed to ready the simulator for the squadron pilots during thier training evolutions. Used to love that job! Great video, TY. Can't wait to start wearing this watch, plan to use it as a work horse.
I've been looking for a daily driver for some time now and your review sold me on this beauty. My love for cosmology and that this being one of my favorite films will bring me joy for years to come. Thank you for your opinion and greetings from Canada
Amazing timepiece. It appears much larger on the wrist, but it is only a 42mm. Incredibly legible. The day/ date function is simply fantastic, and is a great complication at this price point. I bought mine for around 650USD back in the day, and I sold it a while later for around the same price. I now regret selling it, and still wish it was part of my collection. If your wrist can support the size, I definitely recommend this watch. Hamilton did it right when they built these.
What I quite like about the watch is how the inner, 12-hour scale almost looks to be a solar eclipse. The longer markings of that inner concentric circle look akin to light rays emanating out, while the black looks to be the eclipse. Beautiful choice for Interstellar. As a scientist and watch enthusiast, I may have to pick up this piece. Exceptional review, TGV, and greetings from Hell's Kitchen, Manhattan.
Never saw Interstellar....and still haven't....ya I know. But watching your channel has gotten me off my Nixon collection and move on to big boy watches. I still love some of my nixons. When I saw this video at first I wasnt impressed, but the way the numbers catch the light, I fell in love. Thank you for your expertise and information. I am now a proud owner of this watch and it is now my most favorite one. Keep up the good work and I love the elegance and class you have in your videos with the music and shots of the watches. Well done!
Great Video as always TGV! My interest and respect for Hamilton has grown so much... and now that I am the proud owner of a Khaki Automatic, I appreciate them even more. The watch wears perfectly and it is within COSC standards (practically +0/-0 in dial up resting position!) which I am very happy with. I have only had her for two weeks and I can say that she's a keeper. Another cool thing is that I got her in NYC at the Tournaeu Time Machine... so its a nice little reminder of a great experience in the big apple. Great vid TGV and thanks for all you do!
The Urban Gentry I just realized that you are at 99k subscribers! I am very excited for the channel in that it has grown so much! I subbed when the channel had around 45k-50k subscribers and I absolutely love all your videos! After all this time, I can happily say that I have an incurable case of the watch bug ;) So congratulations and cheers to you, the fanbase, and the channel!
I love the way this watch looks. The overall ambiance, aesthetics and soundtrack of the movie is great as well. Somehow I believe they managed to translate that to the design of the watch. I have been considering buying it for a while, but keep doubting whether 42 mm is too big for a watch that is basically all dial.
Another great review, Tristano! As you know I've owned this watch for a couple years and I'm still in love with it every time I strap it on. And yes, I switched bracelet for straps, and being 20mm really makes it perfect. Not top heavy in my honest opinion! Lastly, the crystal on the back is not sapphire, unfortunately. I haven't had this officially confirmed yet, however, with the vast number of deep scratches on the case back crystal has lead me to this conclusion. All the best, TGV, and I wish you a speedy recovery.
I know I'm quite late to the party, but this video really inspired me to purchase this watch. I wanted a quality automatic for daily use, and this is the one I settled on. It looks far better in person than in pics/video, and really won me over at the shop when I was looking at the Khaki Field watches. I even ordered a ColaReb leather band for it to have some options down the line. BZ TGV!
Just when I thought I'd be done collecting watches and now you show me this Hamilton. Maybe sell my Hamilton scuba and save a few extra bucks for this. Pictures of this watch don't do it enough justice. Now, I must have this watch
I found this watch In a tourneau store while on vacation and thought it was so striking with the flashy numerals. I was so close to buying it on the spot because the seconds hand was so elegant relative to everything else. This watch made me rethink Hamilton.
Great review of an iconic watch. I´ll probably go for a Hamilton Khaki for my first Swiss-made timepiece (apart from my ETA-powered Junkers), but it´s hard to decide which one. The Khaki King - being a 40 mm - would suit my 6.5 inch wrist better and be more affordable, but I like the dial of the Pilot Day Date so much more. And furthermore I´m a huge fan of "Interstellar" both from an aesthetic/filmmaking point of view as well as for the topic and approach on spacetravel.
If I am correct Hamilton has been upgrading their watches with their own calibers (equivalent of the tissot powermatic 80 based on the 2834) and the watch you're showing us today has the actual 2834 and not the H40. Charles.
Guessing the Interstellar watch has the original. That's annoying because I want the exact one in the movie and I'll probably not find one with the old movement. And at the same time, if I'm spending $600, I want the better movement too... Argh!
Great timing on this review TGV - I just watched Interstellar for the second time last week. I saw it first time round at the cinema and liked it, second time round I definitely took more from it and loved it. I was able to 'get' the aspects I may have been fuzzy on first time round and I actually cried twice. Obviously I noticed this watch worn by Cooper (didn't really clock it at the cinema), and thought it was an inspired piece of watch casting and suited the character down to the ground. Great film and a great watch - might have to pick one up. Excellent review and great intro T.
I loved the Murph watch as soon as I saw it in the film. My heart was broken when I quickly learned that Hamilton never introduced it into production. As if I needed another piece to dream about ;) Thank you for the video TGV
TGV, I’m relatively new to the luxury watch market since I’ve been in a position in my life to take the plunge on some high end time pieces. What I didn’t realise... until finding your channel was how much I enjoyed learning about horology and that you don’t need to spend a fortune to find real quality. I’m driving the Mrs crazy watching your channel, keep up the good work. P.S. I’m visiting NY in November and I’ll be on the look out for this beauty!
Thank you for this review TGV! I'm massively enjoying my new Seiko 5 and believe I have found the next addition to my collection. Interstellar captivated me on an emotional and scientific level. This watch is a perfect way to make that experience live on. I'm saving for it as we speak. :) Best Regards, and get well soon!
I've watched Interstellar twice now after watching this review. More importantly, this will be my first flight watch and soooo looking forward to it. Great vid, watch and film!
This watch (with leather strap) was my first foray into the wonders of horology. Your review makes me love it even more! Also, I really appreciated you sharing how you struggled with fitness while battling the difficulties with your lungs. Your dedication has inspired me to make lifestyle changes long over due. Thank you and keep up the fantastic reviews!
Late to the party. However I leave for a trip to Maine in June. I’ve already contacted a authorized Hamilton retailer in Portland. I’ll be ordering the watch just prior to leaving and will pick it up while there. Thanks for persuading me to purchase this. I have the 42mm Khaki Field currently. Most accurate automatic I own and I have no doubt this “ Flieger “ will be just as satisfactory. Great channel by the way.
Love your watch reviews.... specifically, the more affordable watches. For the longest time I stopped wearing watches because I always had my smartphone, but I have since purchased three new watches within the last two months. This Hamilton has also peaked my interest.
I've got this watch over a year now and loving it! I wear it every day and it's a beast, yet it brings out some class I feel. I'm not very knowledgable on watches so I can't find anything I don't like with the watch. Good review though, and get well soon!
So...got the 42ml...day/date at 3...quartz version of this watch. Love love love the watch. Was totally unaware until viewing this review. Film fan,Nolan fan, watch fan and now U.G. fan. Thanks for all the info and keep up the great work!!
Been hunting for a pilot watch with a modern take at a reasonable price and this seems to hit the sweet spot. I believe this watch does not require the movie interstellar in order to sell itself as its already beautiful in its own right. But it obviously helps.
I just bought this because of your review and because it is featured in Interstellar. To people out there who don't want to buy this at 42mm (fear will wear big, including myself lol). If your wrist it greater than 7.5 you can easily pull this one out as a 40mm watch, you won't even notice its 42mm.
Just ordered this watch. Cant wait till it arrives. And hamilton just announced the release of the murph watch this week. Hope to see you review that one soon.
I bought this watch 5 years ago when the film came out. I have worn it more than any other watch in a rotation that includes a pair of Grand Seikos, an Omega and a few others. I love this watch. But what's funny is I didn't think it was lumed until I watched this video! I expected the numbers to be lumed but obviously they're not. I never thought the track might be lumed. But the numbers are super reflective and that's the best part of the watch
Just bought this exact pilot a month ago, it was famous before, but now a true celebrity thanks to the urban gentry! Love the watch, love your channel. Any strap recommendations for this one?

Although I just can’t get too excited by most other hamiltons, I now have 4 of these. Crazy nice. I’m terms of comparison, I have an Oris big crown pro pilot, a Junghans pilot meister, an Alpina Big date startimer, a Filson field watch (one of my favorites) and some other miscellaneous watches….this series of Hamilton surpasses all,of them in terms of finish and style. I love all of them, but these are wow! I have decided to wear the 46 mm version as my daily driver at work (airline pilot).
I love how the Flieger indices play with the light in different angles.
Time for an Update Review since Hamilton released the Murph this year.
I agree!
Me too murph review please;)
I would love to see a 2019 Murph review as well!
Add Tenet and The Martian to that list. £2.2k watch tho.
Murph! Don't let me leave!
Cheers!
As an owner of this watch (currently wearing it now) I'm happy to see a proper review of my favorite watch!
So glad to hear, thank you my friend, enjoy the watch!
Best regards,
TGV
Best regards,
TGV
@@theurbangentry yes, would love some music recommendations!
Ciao, John
Haha, so funny I was thinking EXACTLY the same thing about getting a Hammy myself during the editing.
Thank you John,
Best regards,
TGV
Totally agree!
Proud owner of this watch. It's a beauty, and such a value.
Congratulations on nearly reaching 100k, TGV!
Hello! How's it held up ?
TGV, thank you for reviewing my watch. I absolutely love it and Hamilton is one of my top 3 favorite watch brands.
Good day Governor,
I've really taken to your channel, it is just so refreshing to find a very passionate person in our "modern world" that sees the importance of tradition and gentlemanly standard.
Great movie.
Great watch.
Thank you Willy :D
Best regards,
TGV
I tried this watch on yesterday. It’s a spectacular piece. Actually isn’t to big on my small wrist. Looks really good. Hopefully someday I’ll get one.
I hope you get your watch!
I need a Hamilton and a nasa tshirt after watching this film!
In Europe it cost 1050$ but it remains exceptional for the price ! This Complication is very useful for everyday use.
Where can I find it in Europe?
Truly the best watch-related channel on youtube. Keep it up TGV!
Take at look at the 1 o clock and 3 o clock "10" and "15". I bet you one of the 1 indicies dont line up correctly.
@@mikew2911 actually they’re lined up just fine on mine
Would you mind sharing where you found it? The best price I have seen so far is just over $800.
I've been looking for a daily driver for some time now and your review sold me on this beauty. My love for cosmology and that this being one of my favorite films will bring me joy for years to come. Thank you for your opinion and greetings from Canada
The Magic 100,000 subscribers for one of the best niche channels on youtube. A great achievement and very well deserved.
Well done!
100,000!!!!!! Congratulations TGV! Keep up the fantastic work. Now we embark on the road to one million!!!
Not at midnight !!! But at 23:57 at least on mine h40 powermatic 80
And of course, get better already! ;)
What a fantastic story to remember your watch by!
Enjoy your Hammy, outstanding choice,
Thank you Jack,
Best regards,
TGV
The Urban Gentry I just realized that you are at 99k subscribers! I am very excited for the channel in that it has grown so much! I subbed when the channel had around 45k-50k subscribers and I absolutely love all your videos! After all this time, I can happily say that I have an incurable case of the watch bug ;)
So congratulations and cheers to you, the fanbase, and the channel!
absolutely spot-on observation about the dial fonts. its not nitpicking at all. this is why I take your opinion seriously.
BZ TGV!
So glad you did this! One of my favorite movies, one of my favorite watch brands!
Drat -- another watch that I need to buy.
Great review -- thank you
Just when I thought I'd be done collecting watches and now you show me this Hamilton. Maybe sell my Hamilton scuba and save a few extra bucks for this. Pictures of this watch don't do it enough justice. Now, I must have this watch
Hans Zimmer. the guy is amazing. awesome video as always.
Cheers.
I was on the prowl for a new everyday watch. I bought this based on your review but I went with a leather strap. Cheers 🥂
Anyone get the impression the center Hour ring mimics an eclipse or the sun?
I just noticed that. Whole new appreciation for my watch! Thank you for pointing it out
My favorite movie and watches. I somehow missed this one. Thank you TGV.
Charles.
Thank you Charles,
Best regards,
TGV
As if I needed another piece to dream about ;)
Thank you for the video TGV
Best Regards, and get well soon!
I've watched Interstellar twice now after watching this review. More importantly, this will be my first flight watch and soooo looking forward to it. Great vid, watch and film!
Hello! How's it held up ?
This was one of the most moving and thought provoking movies I've ever seen.
I've got this watch over a year now and loving it! I wear it every day and it's a beast, yet it brings out some class I feel. I'm not very knowledgable on watches so I can't find anything I don't like with the watch. Good review though, and get well soon!
Hello! How's it held up to everyday use?
I caved. Second watch I bought from Hamilton due to your videos !
I just love how the numeals reflect light. Not the most practical way to do it, but looks so good.
What a coincidence! I just finished watching interstellar last night to study the Hamilton! Great work TGV.
Thank you Shauqi :D
Best regards,
TGV
So...got the 42ml...day/date at 3...quartz version of this watch. Love love love the watch.
Was totally unaware until viewing this review.
Film fan,Nolan fan, watch fan and now U.G. fan.
Thanks for all the info and keep up the great work!!
Been hunting for a pilot watch with a modern take at a reasonable price and this seems to hit the sweet spot. I believe this watch does not require the movie interstellar in order to sell itself as its already beautiful in its own right. But it obviously helps.
I purchased this sometime ago and really happy I made that decision. Your review was one of the reasons I decided to get it.
I just bought this because of your review and because it is featured in Interstellar. To people out there who don't want to buy this at 42mm (fear will wear big, including myself lol). If your wrist it greater than 7.5 you can easily pull this one out as a 40mm watch, you won't even notice its 42mm.
Just bought the watch and oh my is it a beauty! Great review!
Congrats!! Thank you Chris, enjoy her and wear it with pride.
Best regards,
TGV
Just ordered this watch. Cant wait till it arrives. And hamilton just announced the release of the murph watch this week. Hope to see you review that one soon.
Ive got my name down for a Murph, it's a great looking classic field watch!
Very classic style video. Thanks Greg Just noticed that applied indices have shimmer effect when at different angles!.Beautiful.
I’m a smaller vintage watch guy and I agree 38mm would be incredible, but man I am crushing on this one hard !!
A friend of mine has it. It was a gift from his father-in-law. He's chuffed to bits with it.
I believe I'm in the first 50,000 followers for this wonderful channel. Absolutely love your videos and so happy to see your channel growing!
TGV get some rest and feel better!! Even when you're sick you're making great videos! My favorite subscribed channel!
you 're inside my mind.... been searching for a good value aviation watch for months... and i think you just helped me to make the move!
So glad to hear.Let me know how you get on with it.
Thank you,
Best regards,
TGV
Just bought this exact pilot a month ago, it was famous before, but now a true celebrity thanks to the urban gentry! Love the watch, love your channel.
Any strap recommendations for this one?
