Welcome to our rather massive Budget Car Comparison Head-to-Head Shootout Review and Buyer's Guide. This is possibly the most important car comparison we've ever done as in South Africa, this is a segment where tens of thousands of motorists spend their money every year.
It's also a segment which brings a lot of joy. For many of us, one of these might very well be our first car. And so we've put together a tonne of information to help you decide on the best way to spend your hard earned money.
For a full and detailed written review featuring all the cars in this video, click here:
    Download the Cars.co.za app here:
    Android: play.google.com/store/apps/de...
    iOS: itunes.apple.com/za/app/cars....
The budget car segment is fiercely contested in South Africa and for this showdown, we brought 5 of South Africa’s most affordable budget cars together to find out which one deserves your hard-earned Rands the most. Let the budget car showdown begin!
Here's a question for you. Is it possible for a car manufacturer to produce a safe and affordable budget car, of good general quality and reliability, with reasonable general performance, good fuel efficiency and an attractive ownership proposition?
The budget car segment is a lucrative one for many car manufacturers and it’s a segment that serves mobility to a market clamouring for affordable cars. These cars are often the starting point in someone’s motoring life journey and this purchasing decision is, therefore, an important one. But manufacturers need to make profits too and so compromises are made and corners are cut to bring the vehicle to market at a price that's palatable for its intended market. No budget car is perfect, it can't be, and some are even made with a foamy-tapeworm-like USB port that crawls out of your glovebox. Confused? Definately give the video a watch...
This comparative test is our biggest yet, featuring 5 of South Africa's most affordable budget cars including the Mahindra KUV100 Nxt 1.2 G80 K2+, Suzuki Celerio 1.0 GA, Renault Kwid 1.0 Dynamique, Datsun Go 1.2 Mid and lastly, the Kia Picanto 1.2 Start.
*Please note that we wanted the 49 kW / 95 Nm Kia Picanto 1.0 Start (R154 995) for this test, but Kia could only supply us with the Picanto 1.2 Start. We will therefore not make any pronouncements in terms of the 1.2-litre engine's performance and efficiency but ride and handling and feature specification remain the same as that of the Picanto 1.0 Start.
Which one should you buy? Let's find out!

My South Africa friends, from my personal experience Suzuki celerio is a moving coffin. The brand has the worst safety record overall. That doesn't mean the rest of cars here are safer, at least here in India other brands like Renault, Kia and Mahindra have taken serious steps to improve the safety of their cars after a series critics, and Mahindra had even managed to get 4&5 star rating for its new products. But Suzuki appears not worried about it. My suggestion will be to you friends, Safety is prime when considering cheap car. All the best people. Love from India.🙂

It would seem like there are different phases when it comes to getting a car
    1. I need to get where I need to go
    2. I need something more reliable for long term
    3. I need something faster than this
    4. I want something fancier and more luxurious than this
Depending on your budget and car knowledge, you can skip the first few phases but most of us have had to go through these phases in order to learn.
My wife and I had a Kwid as our first car (phase 1)....long story short, we traded it in for the vivo (phase 2). Some people might go years without issues with their phase 1 car but yeeeey, me and my wife didn't even reach a year before we saw flames. I learnt things I didn't even know like "accelerator cables" etc. Sizwile (we felt the heat). Vivo was our angel. Bit more pricey but well worth it. Not the fastest car out there but very reliable. Interprovincial travel was no hassle. So if you can, try to add a few hundreds to your monthly premium and get a car in a better segment than this...these aren't bad but they won't satisfy you long enough to finish paying them off.

The KIA is really the better built car by a long shot. It's worth spending a few grand more and getting the 'Street' version which adds a lot (ABS, 2nd airbag, power windows). It would be my choice. I agree though that its criminal to exclude ABS on any new car.

I am in the USA, so we don't receive ANY of the cars tested here, but as someone who likes small cars I really enjoyed this test. The presenter has a good voice, clear and concise (which isn't something that can be said about some of the presenters in videos here in the US), and the information was laid out quite well.
Of all the cars, the Mahindra looks like a miniature truck, which if it was available in the US could ALMOST be a plus. All the oddball....features(?) give the KUV an interesting bit of character, though I suppose US drivers/buyers would demand more conventional emergency brake handles. But that name....Mahindra needs to shorten it to one, or maybe two, catchy syllables.
BTW, "....a full written review will be up on our website, as soon as someone writes it", sounds almost comical.

I quite like the security of that old style handbrake. On my car the hand brake ratchet mechanism is visible and you get to see just how many millimeters could mean the difference between you slipping down one or two teeth and losing grip on worn brakes on a steep incline. Many a time I've pulled it and it warps a little and you hear this loud clank which is the mechanism slipping and it jumps a couple teeth which is more than enough to send my car rolling. So I think it is a poor design and the old style design is much more secure

The Mahindra is interesting, but it looks more like a mini SUV than a hatchback sedan.
Probably what makes any of these a tough sell for me (though living in the US I will never have a chance to own one any of these, anyway) is that they all look kind of blah. I guess if I explored the manufacturers websites I would find that several of these cars are available in more attractive colors? But as it stands I guess I would pick whichever one was quietest on the road and had the most attractive looking interior....Kia or Suzuki?

  • @VICKY-ow8vo

    Mahindra Is real winner here
Better specs with better safety...in overall
That's more imp as owner in long run Suzuki is deal breaker in terms of safety
N relaiblty is similar to Mahindra....as started to capturing market in last 3 years.
