If it’s more fun to drive, has a 7 year warranty and it is ultimately cheaper. The Kia should have won. This is a budget car test. The peace of mind a 7 Year warranty brings when you haven’t got a lot of money. Is hard to ignore. There is still a bit of Brand bias here. That’s my thoughts anyway.

HAving driven both, no, the Up is amazing in terms of its feel. The Kia Picanto is a great car altogether but the feel of the interior and whatnot just is amazing for the price on the up. that plus a really nice gearbox setup if you choose the "slower" 60 hp variant goes a long way. Options end up being roughly the same equipment, i think the Kia was slightly cheaper fully equippied but it comes down to about the same.
NOW, on the used market, the kia has the edge because many are still under warranty while the earlier model Up´s mostly dont and the Up DOES seem to have issues with the gearbox if it wasnt treated well, my Mii soon has 200k on it tho and hasn´t given me any problems other than a dead battery and a rattle with the Nav-holder.
      Its a great car altoegther.

Another example of this show's VW bias. They said in almost every category that the KIA was better, but finally they couldn't help themselves giving it to VW. And look at those acres of painted metal on show in the VW! It needs marking down for that. We have the 1 litre turbo Picanto and the only thing I can moan about is the lack of an intermittent setting on the rear wiper!

I have driven them both as daily drivers. The VW Up for 2 years and now the Picanto since 2,5 years. You guys claim the VW has a better build quality, but you know what happened me with the Up and what happened me with the Picanto? Pretty funny; The Up had bent brake disks at the front (twice!), it had 2(!) gearbox changes because there were metal particles scraping in it, one was an overhaul. The airco failed right away from the factory, it leaked. The door had water in it because some hole was clogged. The cap of the wiper at the back just fell off when I closed the trunk. A protection plate of the brake disk broke off once. Two shockbreakers had to be replaced after 20.000km.... Like dude, wtf? All this for a brand new car in 2 years? Since I have the Picanto, I have never been to the garage, only for regular maintenance. And no, I don't drive like a maniac.

The 90bhp up is a proper little warm hatch. Basically it's a VW up GT. The difference between it and the Up GTi is one gear ratio and detuned engine mapping. If you could remap the 90bhp up to 115bhp it would be effectively a GTI. The smart money choice. You can pick them up brand new for £11k...

I've got a little Picanto Gt Line (if it's worthy of the GT tag...), it makes sense as a cheap commuter car, costs me the square root of nothing to run. Lots of things I dislike about it and I'd always rather be driving my old Land Rover, but the handling is great - chuck it into bends and it takes commitment to make the tires chirp.. very safe handling little motor and quite entertaining, just keep the engine fizzing..
Dislikes...? The A pillar blind spots, rather asthmatic engine which isn't exceptionally economical and much too light clutch. Otherwise, it actually seems pretty well screwed together and for the money, very well equipped. In two years, it's given absolutely no issues. I also never thought I'd need a reversing camera, but it's brilliant- turn around in the tightest of spaces, effortlessly.

I know it's not 100% decisive, because owners play a big role (not taking care of car, having old tires, etc.) but the german TÜV (equivalent to british MOT) ranks the VW Up! at #72 with 5.8% failing the test. The average failure rate for all cars is 5.9%. Now the KIA Picanto is ranked at #47 with a failure rate of 5.3%
If we take a look at all competitors of the above video:
Dacia Sandero ranked at #121 with 11.0% failure rate
Fiat Panda ranked at #115 with 9.3% failure rate
Toyota Aygo ranked at #81 with 6.3% failure rate
VW Up! ranked at #72 with 5.8% failure rate
KIA Picanto ranked at #47 with 5.3% failure rate
MG 3 not included in the stats, because it's probably not sold here. Or atleast i haven't seen a single one yet.
One of the best performing small cars would be the Opel/Vauxhall Adam which is ranked at #28 with a 4.4% failure rate.

Talk about out of touch overpaid motor journals🙄. Shocked that a car that costs a "mere" £10K should have decent build quality and performance. For the average punter ten grand is still a big purchase, if I spend that much on a little hatchback you can be damn sure I expect it to be well screwed together.
The only sensible thing they said was that they are maybe paying too much for the prestige cars; well duh, of course you are. The car manufacturers love to sell the fashionable top end stuff because the margins are so much bigger than they get for the family hatchback/saloon, where they make pennies. Just because you spend £30K on a car doesn't mean you get three times better than any of these.
If you really want value never buy any car new, let someone else break it in with a few thousand miles on the clock then buy it for a lot less than the showroom price. Basic knowledge any shrewdie knows right?

I had the previous shape Picanto, and I tested both the 1 litre three cylinder and the 1.25 four cylinder. I got the 1 litre and to be honest it was a nice sound three pot, the gear change feel was superb. Only reason I got rid after a few months was I couldnt get comfortable and the suspension clonked over bad roads. Pity really as it was a good car to drive. I believe the new model is hugely improved, plus if I got one again id get the 1.25.
As for this road test of these bargain new cars, some snobbery going on I think. The Sandero stepway is a comfy ride over any surface (im in the motor trade) so I have no idea why they say it isnt. Perhaps they are comparing to a Range Rover. As for the rest, the comments from the presenters are just ridiculous. These are BUDGET cars for people who cant afford so called premium cars which I think is whats wrong today, people are obsessed with image. Ooh look at me in my BMW. Why ? Mostly PCP leased, its not yours is it so why would I be impressed ? I would rather live in a nice house instead of wasting my money on a fancy badge. Im not a show off so I dont care what anyone else thinks. As you have guessed I drive a Subaru. I like the fact you hardly see any on the roads. More exclusive in my opinion plus they are tough long lasting cars. Anyway, cheap cars should be treated as such and with the respect they deserve. Nothing wrong with any of them for the price.
The 1.25 Kia is the winner here for me.

Best cars for circa 10K: Hyundai i10, Kia Picanto, MG 3. But the MG is the most sporty to drive, has the most room, is the most practical, and is best on the motorway. Unless you live in a very flat area or do a lot of miles, the extra cost of fuel for the MG will be negligible. If you live in a hilly area or do a lot of motorway miles, the MG may even be more economical. The 1L 3-cyl cars, especially those with a turbo, suck fuel going up hills. And turbo or not struggle on the motoway. Hyundai or Kia with the 1.25L 4-cyl are the best overall, taking quality into account. New MG 3 isn't that far behind and also has a good warranty. It's also the best car to drive, even if it is a bit more agricultural. Personally, I like all three. If I were buying with my head, I think I'd probably go for an i10 1.25 over the Picanto even though the warranty is two years less. Secondhand I'd go for the Kia 1.25 because of the extra warranty. And presonally I'd buy with the auto box. If I were buying with my heart, and wanted a manual, I might opt for the MG. Really depends on who is going to drive the car and in what environment. If you're going to drive a lot of B roads, and want a manual, I reckon the MG. Also if you're buying as family car I think the MG's additional size will be welcomed on family outings. VW quality isn't what it was and they don't back their cars with much of a warranty. And you must factor in the value of the extra warranties into the prices of the Kia, MG, Hyundai, and IIRC Toyota also has a 5-year warranty. Aygo feels small and cheap though. Lastly, I'm not sure that for the money the Sandero should have been so readily dismissed. 3K is a lot of money, particularly at this end of the market. You can buy a lot of other things with such a signficant saving. However, it also needs to be said that few private buyers are going to buy the bottom spec of any of these cars!
