  • It’s hard to buy a cheap new car these days, isn’t it?
In a time of £40,000 Vauxhall Astras and £50,000 Mini Convertibles, you can count the number of new cars on sale for less than £15,000 on your own two hands.
However, although there aren’t many around, it’s still possible to bag yourself something that’s both cheap and cheerful. We’ve gathered four of our favourites - the MG 3, the Dacia Sandero, the Kia Picanto and the Hyundai i10 - with the aim of finding the best affordable car in Britain.
Join Matt Prior and James Disdale as they take a relaxed look at these low-budget legends.

But people eventually expect and demand better, more improved cars. And in the case of the Dacia Sandero, moving to the current Renault Clio floor-pan and suspension set-up has hugely improved both the ride quality and the driving experience. It has however meant quite an increase in price. You can't get summat for nowt. Better often costs more.....

I had an MG3 as a rental recently and was generally impressed with it as a basic car. It feels very late 90s/early 2000s in a good way. Great visibility and fun to drive. It has the stuff you need and not all the gimmicks that make modern cars so insanely expensive. The negatives were that it has a lot of tyre roar so tiring on the motorway, you cannot dim the screen and display enough which is really annoying at night and it is a bit thirsty on fuel. It is definitely built to a price but does a surprisingly good job overall.

      @adrianromero92 Год назад +10

Make no mistake, a Dacia will always be cheaper than a direct rival from another brand. A Duster is bigger than a Jazz and logically has some attributes that the Jazz does not have. The models must be compared by segments, not by price. Sandero with Clio, 208, Corsa, C3, Ibiza Polo... a Duster with an Autral, 3008, C5Aircross...

The UK is one of the few markets that uses right hand drive.
The market is also relatively small with a lot of competition.
Both factors contribute to UK vehicles being relatively expensive.
It costs a lot to design engineer and produce vehicles that require specialized parts and since profit margins on vehicles is relatively small the costs need to be covered on a lower sales volume .

Dad bought a Hello Yellow MG3 Excite brand new in March 2022 for £12,388. I absolutely love it, yes it's very old school in every way - but to me, having well weighted, hydraulically assisted steering, and an engine thats a joy to rev out to extract the power makes for a very, very entertaining drive.
I find the engine a little odd though, in the way that all the power comes in a sudden lump at around 6,000 rpm.

They're not for me - simple, proven - if raucous naturally aspirated 4 pot for me every time.

It is shocking how we're being ripped off though. I'm not interested in the excuses of emissions and equipment because the general cost to manufacture has either stagnated or changed very little depending on which company/model.
When you look at spec for spec its around a 50% increase on a lot of cars over just a few years with little justification past the usual excuses.
Truth is when people started buying on pcp/lease the makers got greedy. Now you pay a lease/payments/etc for three years or so then the second owner pays what the car should have cost new.

Lots of good points made here. My female friend recently had to decide between the i10 and the Picanto (2 variant) and went for the Picanto, simply because the KIA service was miles better than Hyundai. Hyundai didn't seem to give a monkeys, leaving her lingering around, despite having an appointment, then giving her literally no detail, handed her the key and told her to drive it. They lost the sale, regardless of whether the car was good. KIA, loads of time, loads of attention, loads of information, job done.

Heard this aplenty about hyundai dealerships. I had a clutch problem on a new i10. SERVICE MANAGER told me clutch slave cylinder had gone need it for a week. I said it’s a cable this no hydraulics. I took the car away and reported the dealer to hyundai who did not even respond. A fake warranty claim by the hyundai dealer. No thanks

I drive an A3 daily, I’ve owned a Dacia in the past and that car was a revelation! When you weigh up equipment, costs, etc…. , the Dacia is (in my opinion) the best car out there value for money.

In Australia we only get the Kia pecarto and the MG3 and they are the cheapest cars available in Australia at about aud$20000 but up until Suzuki Australia stopped bringing them into the country it was the Suzuki Baleno GL and they were under aud$20000 but l did see a second Baleno GL sell for aud$22000 second hand and we bought a 2021 Suzuki Baleno GLX and we paid aud$25000 for it drive away they must be good because the Baleno has been rebadged the Toyota Starlet not sold in Australia so they must be a very good car if Toyota put there badge on them and we all know about Toyota's reputation for reliability my 1997 Toyota Hilux is a classic example of that

In september I drove dad i10, it indeed struck me how pleasant in each n every way the gearbox was. just a feel of blissful driving, almost wanting oneself to get rid of one car , ie trading one automatic for summat like dads i10, that gearbox just has summat. shall i say tasty

Managed to obtain some sense of a comparison between the cars. Overall, it came over as a chat between a couple of blokes rather than a customer-orientated evaluation. I don't really want to know about tea flasks and bags, it smacks of a lack of preparation and focus on the needs of the viewer, just wastes time.

@@David54W small cars are great at that, cleaver on space. what i was meaning is boot space , i doubt i could get my large suitcase in, when i travel every space is full so boot, rear seats even the front seat and foot well full and ive got the i20. im only 5ft tall so i20 it feels focus size i don't require a larger car i always have a smaller car, if i need a large car it be a 2nd. hopefully soon im getting the Premium se spec newer version my car but its crazy spec like a huge pan roof, heated seats and wheel and climate control and list as long as your arm. but its full loaded but its only 80kg more than gen1 basic spec so its still light what make it still nimble and lightness add fun to drive on back roads my long term car i plan to keep decades, already plan of action to maintain it and keep on top of things like rust, as its a very long term car it should be a top spec. 4-6 weeks im going car shopping

@@David54W big fan small lightweight cars they fun to drive on back roads. my first car was 2007 fiesta before they got big but even tho it was a small car the boot easy fit large suitcase. that the only reason i went for i20 over i10 boot space no way it could fit my extra large suite case as when i go away it a month away normally so do not travel light, they got same engines the i10 be a tad more nippy around the town for sure less weight . i20 is just right amount space and newer ones wow the kit you get in them its great normally reserved for a big car so big car spec in a city car so cannot complain , i20 still light compared to other brand city cars and they pretty reliable to , mine ive had 56 months its never let me down and just general wear and tear items they were very reasonable cost reason im going for a newer version of my current car as ive got gen 1 it has done very well so i buy another newer version . if i did not need the space i10 is prob what i would have, but i20 its still light nippy and has plenty space.

The sad fact that none of these cheap cars are available as hybrids or EVs. They can be. It's just "cheap" cars have to have slim profit margins.
Cost of manufacture and the cost to ensure profit growth are two different things that affect EVs etv
