That change in file from 5 to 3 was like magic. I wouldn’t have even noticed it if it hadn’t been mentioned in the previous comment. I had to go back and watch it again to see it actually happen.

The Drum Major shown is the Senior Drum Major of the Household Division, Gareth Chambers. The top man. I’ve not seen him fault yet (& doubt I ever will) Note also that the band at 7:24 sort themselves out, no audible commands that I can hear, moving from ranks of 5 into 3 in order to negotiate the narrower gateway. Well drilled😎

The command was given by the central trombonist

Hi Ann! have missed you Lately, probably will see you more now Mr B is Back. There are Lead Musicians all through the Band, The Most obvious being The Time Beater or Bass Drummer, who give Non Verbal Commands when needed for the Band. The Obvious one is The Double Beat from The Bass Drummer to Alert Everyone a Command is about to be Signalled by the Drum Major. The Other one is the Fairly Well known Signal of the Lead Trombonist - he's always the one in the Centre Directly Behind The Drum Major - When he Lifts his Trombone Vertically to Signal the Countermarch & each Bandsman Turns 180 Degrees in Turn & Marches back the Way he/she came completely in Time & Dress. They all have their own Signals & God help anyone not paying attention & Fluffs it. Having the Duty at Windsor is a Good Learning Curve, the Roads are fairly Narrow & not Helped by Crowds 10 Deep spilling off the Foot Paths. The Narrow Streets of Old London makes for Good Practise too on City Parades.
The Lead or Principle Trombonist of the Irish Guards Band is Sgt David Lockwood the Bass Trombonist & ifyou keep your Eye on him during a March, you'll soon get used to the Signs he makes to the Band.
      Have a Good Week Hon.

Its no great trick for an NCO with reasonable experience drilling troops to turn and stay in step marching backwards. I've done it myself as a US Marine sergeant and I'm certain I didn't have nearly the experience the Drum Major has.

Having drill "drummed", quite literally (the beat of the drum is always in your head) for years is simply part and parcel of the skill. Even now when I hear a band I seem to just drop into the timing and the pace. (I don't HALT, check, One-two" at traffic lights though!!

Senior Drum Major (SDM) of The Household Division, SDM Gareth Chambers MVO 1st Battalion Irish Guards (IG) Warrant Officer 2nd Class (WO2) Leads The Band of The Scots Guards From Wellington Barracks (WB) Up the Mall To St James Palace, in Part of The Changing The Guards Parade at Buckingham Palace.
The Band is Under Control of The Drum Major & will Respond to his Commands, the Fist of Which is The March Tempo. The Second is the Command to Acknowledge of 'Eyes Left & Eyes Front' as they March past BP. They Continue up The Mall & into Marlborough Rd, to the Entrance to SJP where The Guard Room of the Foot Guards who Guard SJP is Located at this Entrance to SJP & The Band is here to Collect The Old Guard & March Down The Mall to Buckingham Palace, where The New Guard will Leave with Musical Support from This Band & March Up The Mall To SJP to Mount the Guard Duty for The Palace. The 5 Bands of The Regiments of Foot Guards (Infantry) & the Band of The Household Cavalry, Provide the Musical Support For Old & New Guard Detachments For The London BP, Clarence House & SJP Guard Change. In this Parade, The Bands only Play when Escorting The Detachment of Guards or When on the Forecourt of BP, when Marching on their Own, the Bands Don't Play.
SDM Gareth Chambers MVO is a Favourite of Many, Including Myself, who believe he is the Epitome of What a Drum Major in a Military Band should be, he Gives the Signals to the Band on the March with Elegance & Precision becoming Part of The Overall Military Music Experience, Show Casing The Professionalism & Talent of The Band's Musicians with the Precision & Drill Ability of a Well Trained Military. As a Drum Major SDM Gareth Chambers is a Pleasure & Delight to Watch, as Part of The Whole Military Band & Music Experience, they are all Fantastic .
