Shes not wrong, the phone or more specifically social media, and entertainment apps can become an escape and also creates dopamine intolerance. I try to limit myself when and where possible, once a week I try to have 24 - 48 hours where I will use apps to block all non essential apps, games, social media, entertainment and if your at that age pornography is a big problem, sometimes referred to as a dopamine fast. It feels pretty rough during that time but I feel alot more alert, productive and human in the days following as I increase dopamine sensitivity and give my brain a little boost, I feel alot better afterwards.

As someone with high functioning ADHD, when someone's asks being in my shoes is like, I tell them "go a whole day without being able to control your impulses or not being able to stand loud sounds. Your thoughts come and go in an instant and constantly listening to music helps you focus and calm down."

    • @natstrickland5033
      @natstrickland5033 3 года назад +36

Yeh - Listening to music literally focuses my attention onto what I'm doing, what doesn't help is that my parents don't know how to gently do things so if I'm not wearing something with noise cancelling then I'm officially unable to concentrate... What doesn't help is that I'm still finding a music taste so I'm by this point just playing random playlists on Spotify at loud volume lol

I drift off info into either thoughts and just empty space so many times throughout the day. When it comes moments of being lost in space,my theory is I'm actually thinking but when I snap out of it I immediately forget what I was thinking. It's fkn annoying.
Take driving for instance. Ever since iv been driving, it's very common for me to drive for miles in auto pilot, snapping out of it not even remembering the last 20 minutes of driving. If I'm on the phone for more than a few minutes,it's a guarantee I will space out and not have heard anything for a few seconds or minutes. So you can imagine school growing up was a nightmare

For example ...thinking about what I'll work on when I get home while my manager is explaining what he wants me to do in the next couple days.... then I have to track back and rely on memory or embarrassingly ask him to repeat himself.

Something I realized a lot of people are unaware of (I also have ADHD and finally sat down after many years to fully research it) and basically people with ADHD are Neurodivergent (like people with Autism and other learning disabilities) and also have bad sensory issues. It's because we take in too much sensory input but at the same time if we don't get enough, we'll become depressed. So we also do stimming behaviors(repetitive movements done to stimulate or regulate yourself) like shaking our legs to like, distract us if we are overwhelmed or stimulate us if we're bored. Actually researching ADHD is super fascinating and I think everyone with ADHD should do it. Turns out it's not really a matter of lacking attention, and more of a matter of not being able to regulate it. We're either full on or not at all and don't really have control over this. It's also a common known fact, scientifically proven, that people with ADHD, our brains actively take in more sensory information than mentally healthy people. Normally people can ignore things like a subtle touch a smell outside etc but people with ADHD, our brains take it all in and that's why we get anxious and overstimulated

Right now I cant afford to go to a psychologist, I don't have money, a job or live in a wealth nation, my country is really poor and psychologists are expensive.
At this point, I really want some medication to help me with it. I can't study in home, can't pay attention in my college(scholarship) lectures, I'm always walking miles inside my home, overthinking about futile things, my mind just go in autopilot and I do nothing. Actually their achievements and their efforts have way more value, at least in many of those things.
My gf has ADHD, and I can truly say that she's the most capable and smart person I've ever known. And these types of videos help me to know more about this world and love her even more.
In conclusion, I'm convinced that ADHD is not so much a disorder, but a way of showing others that even so, you can be the same or more capable, strong and smart than them. And of course with a LOT of value.

As someone with ADHD, I often find it hard to stand still sometimes. When I’m standing and talking to someone, I start swaying without realizing it. My family’s been trying to get me to break that habit, but it’s hard for me to control and I don’t immediately realize that I have been swaying. I also find it hard to concentrate on assignments, even in classes I do genuinely like. Music does help me concentrate better, but there are times where I don’t feel motivated to play some music bc of me wanting to listen to a RUclips video instead, which of course leads me to watching the video, then unintentionally falling asleep for an hour. I am wondering if I should get back on the meds, but I’m worried if I mention it to my mother, she might brush it off and say I’m fine. Perhaps once I move out and have my own house I’ll consider looking for any therapists that can help me.

Thanks for the video. I've been trying to gain a better understanding of ADHD and my family isn't even trying to understand. They look at it as, "Oh so it's the hyper active part that makes you unfocused. Lets give you medicine to calm him down." So I went on the medicine for about for 6 years from 3rd grade to 9th grade. And all it did was make me feel depressed and while I wasn't hyper anymore, I felt sad. Once I hit 10th grade I lied to my parents telling them I took the medication without really doing so until 12th grade when they decided it wasn't working. I haven't been on medication since and I'm not sure I wanna go back again. I'm 23 with a part time security job (Security and ADHD is a terrible combo. I don't know how I kept this job for 3 years. XD) and I feel like my ADHD is getting in the way of my everyday life. I even have issues socially. Starting and holding conversations, staying focused, getting distracted easily, changing topics out of nowhere, etc. Even got distracted writing this comment and browsed Discord for about 5 minutes. I have severe attentive ADHD and disassociation issues. I hate it more than anything. I can barely even think straight and my body acts before my mind. I hear people speaking sometimes, but their words just seem to float through my head. They never stick. Promises are hard to hold, because I can't remember something someone did or said. ADHD is not fun or cool. So to those who think it's cool, it's really not. It's caused my grades to deplete, fights and breakups, and disappointing friends. It's not fun. So please stop acting like it is.

It has been really difficult making the same mistakes over and over without seeming to learn and being called names like selfish or immature when i am the first impacted by my actions. Happily, i've been learning about ADHD and realised i display all the symptoms. After many years, my parents finally agreed to let me see a neuro-psychologist/therapist ; i'll see the results of my IQ test and a few tests that seem related to ADHD and other mental disorders i may have in around a month, so i'll try coming back here :]

I've never been diagnosed (because I have the female presentation) but literally everyone I know thinks I have ADHD. I'm daydreaming constantly (maladaptive), people have entire conversations with me and there are points where I just zone out completely, I hyperfixate on things that interest me (I'd watch the same show over and over again, etc), I talk very loudly and often out of turn and I say things I don't mean without getting the chance to think about it. There are also periods of time where I'm extremely impulsive. Like I accepted doughnuts some random guy on the street. I have such a hard time concentrating, especially when there's noise surrounding me as well. I know I have OCD, which apparently isn't uncommon for people with ADHD. Dunno, I think I might have to get screened.

Pretty much it ya. I have adhd self diagnosed. Unlike many others im 100% sure i have this and anxiety or something as ive been experiencing the same shit over and over again lol and i do see it in others and they think they have nothing. But ya ive experienced alot of what you said the OCD thing is actually reallly weird becuase i dont belive i have ocd but sometimes i really think i do becuase its a teeth grinding feeling trying to do some things perfect but at the same time im the opposite and dont care. Same thing with being a "clean freak", like taking out the trash or cleaning the backyard of dog poop i feel it being too discusting to even do dishes or touche a trash can but ill do handstands in the street or use raw meat for food and forget to wash my hands and be perfectly fine with doing so and eat with my fingers lol so i really dont know for some things. Idk fi you can relate...ALSO typing 5fucking paragraphs when you origionally were going to type half of 1 is also a symtom. I noticed in your comment myself. I notice but just becuase im fully aware of all this shit dosent mean i can stop it becuase it just dosent work.

In modern society yea, it is maladaptive. But it may be possible that it was somewhat beneficial to our ancestors. For instance people with adhd think outside the box. The impatience and unwillingness to spend too much time thinking about solutions makes us come up with very quick solutions to problems others wouldn't think about. Another theory is that adhd may have benefitted men as hunters. Hunting doesn't necessarily require hours of intense focus, The slight sound of an animal, or peripheral disturbance causes an impulse to automatically look in that direction. Now when on the hunt, literally and metaphorically, people with adhd can exhibit excellent and stream line focus. Another theory is that it developed and was the reason for humans to first migrate out of africa. It has to do with the novelty seeking that is a part of adhd that makes it plausible. Excitement from exploration overrides the dangerous aspects of it. Or we might have had shitty discipline as children or have lesions on the right hemisphere of our brain. AKA brain damage.

Frosty Girl Draws u should get it diagnosed, cause I was diagnosed in 1st grade. And everyone thought my sister has it but she was diagnosed with it 3 times. And she wasn’t. But she has a lot of the symptoms. It’s a brain thing. It’s a thing u can have part of but there are different types of hyperactivity. And also a natural human thing for being impulsive and hyper. But idk just get it checked cause diagnosing urself can trick ur brain into thinking it to. And if u do I suggest therapy for the first few years. It can help with school and how to give yourself safe methods of paying attention

I'm a 22 years old psychology undergraduate who's currently having trouble graduating due to my problem with concentration. As a psychology student, I know that we shouldn't diagnose ourselves, but when I read about the symptoms of ADHD, I can help but relate. Seems that I've had them all my life, being misunderstood by many people. The effect on my life shift and change all the time, sometime it's prominent, sometimes it isn't. Currently I'm probably at my worst state. I can't concentrate at psychology classes that require great deal of concentration to understand, like Inferential Statistics and Psychometry, with mymind shifting from imagination to embarrassing memories in class, all the damn time. And I'm currently feel so burn out of living 16 years of my life worrying about grades, yer at the same time, I can't imagine how will I deal with work deadlines if I'm already burn out about grades and assignments. I like psychology, and have passed all the classes that make psychology interesting, but now... I feel like.... I've had it enough. I want to lay down and rest for a bit, but there's no time left for that. I've gone this far.
You may even tell about my concentration problem from my writing pattern....

Ever since ive became spiritual ive learned to control my adhd, its also good to work on self discipline ive experimented with not taking my medicine so I learned to control myself without having to be in control as well. Self discipline may be not as easy at first but then it becomes way easier. This really clicked for me when my old boss told me a story about his son having adhd and that him and his friend were watching their little sister but they werent paying attention and she went in a pond and died, it wasnt because of this particular part because you know not completely grasping the pain of this situation, but that I had to learn to control myself, its okay to not be okay sometimes but you've got this

Also when I feel impulsive or have anxiety from medicine I go to a comment section and spread good information that will help someone it helps calm me down and regroup and form a habit of thinking before I act, because teaching to others helps me feel like im useful and it practices being nice, because I used to say things I didnt mean that were hurtful to people because of the impulse and because anxiety can make you feel like what you're doing is meaningless so its good to find that good headspace again then focus back on what you were doing.

I am going to 6th grade this year so i had it for a while. I take methylphenidate for my ADHD which calms me down by slowing a certain part of the brain down so i can concentrate. Yes - that’s because when doing something you like, your brain releases extra hits of dopamine.
