I work for the Sanitation district in Hampton roads. We have several of these that power electric generators when our pump stations lose power. My assistant asked me "Why wouldn't we trade them out for newer engines?" Because they're Detroit's! If we take care of them they will run forever.

We didn't have any 6V71's, but we did have regular 6-71s, 6-110s, slant 6-71s and 2-71s when I was in the US Navy. I spent many hours crossing the Clyde River on liberty boats, landing craft and Box-Ls listening to those engines. I'll pass on a recording. This one sounds great. Note that's it's a good idea to check the copper jumper lines to the injectors. We had one come lose and it filled the engine with diesel fuel! Another problem we had was the copper line from the fuel pump to the rail would crack. Since the fuel pump is driven off the blower, the pump blew fuel into the blower. No wonder the engine wouldn't shut down!
