With legendary producer Bob Ezrin taking charge the intention was to make something more direct and tougher than what had come before.
Though Solsbury Hill was the first single from the album, Modern Love was the only track to have a video made at that time:
"The video for Modern Love was done with this director Peter Medak (I’d seen the film The Ruling Class which I really enjoyed, a great film with Peter O’Toole) and he did that with me in Shepherds Bush. They were just putting in this new shopping centre with moving escalators which seemed very ‘of the future’ at the time."

Modern Love Lyrics
Hey, I'm feeling so dirty, you're looking so clean
And all you can give is a spin in your washing machine
I fly off to Rome to my prima bella
She leave me in the rain with a telescopic umbrella
Aah the pain
Modern love can be a strain
I trusted my Venus was untouched in her shell
But the pearls, the pearls in her oyster were as tacky
as hell
For Lady Godiva I came incognito
Her driver had stolen her red hot magneto
Aah the pain
Modern love can be a strain
I don't know why they leave me in the lurch
To carry on the search
It's driving me up the wall
Pity when I have so much passion
Romance is out of fashion
Can't handle modern love at all
Hey I worship Diana by the light of the moon
When I pull out my pipe she scream out of tune
In Paris my heart sink when I see my Mona Lisa
She gives me the wink, then she show me the freezer
Aah the pain
Modern love can be a strain
Aah the pain
Modern love can be a strain

The vocal take used on this record was captured when Peter Gabriel was gaffer taped high up on a stone pillar in the recording studio, as Bob Ezrin and the engineers thought he wasn't getting the emtion they were looking for in the chorus.
It worked because the vocals are great on this.
I mean, it makes sense considering it's the only song from the PG catalog where he was screaming lol
@@discoduckgandolfoh no, you haven't heard Exposure from the second album or the bloodcurdling shrieking into a distortion box that is featured on 'Melt Face' on several tracks. Or the unforgettable goosebumps he afflicted us with on Rhythm of the Heat..
'The rhythm has my SOOOOOOUUUUUU
UUULLLLLLLLLLLL!!!"
An Incredible Underrated Song.
It was an incredible underrated album. So much gems!
Such a great song. I have no clue how this didn't do well on the charts. Were most people deaf in 1977 or something? This song still holds up today.
indeed!
Well, Hotel California, Jailbreak, Station To Station, Presence, Alice Cooper Goes To Hell, 2112, Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap and The Ramones had all come out the year before. So yes, people in 1977 were deaf.
great song.
Most of them were listening to disco, the Eagles, and Ted Nugent. Knuckleheads! PG was one of the few pointing the way to the future in 1977.
Um, no. More like most people are deaf now. Hip-Hop, divas, bubblegum country etc.
There were so many great acts in several genres in 1977/78 it was hard to get noticed.
Peter Gabriel I and II are my favourite albums by PG, I used to listen to them all the time when they came out. I can't believe I'm watching this video for the first time in 2022, more than 40 years after the record came out.
@Visapateresa3, 45 years, in fact, at this point.
Same, I didn’t know it existed
Same for me in 2023. Not very good though.
It grows on you tho
People were not deaf in 1977. They were listening to the punk and disco nonsense. Peter was way ahead of them.
"I trusted my Venus was untouched in her shell
But the pearls in her oysters were tacky as hell". Oh Peter 😂
I always thought was penis instead venus. So It was really match
Wat...
"She gave me the wink then she showed me the freezer." priceless
Even more priceless that he rhymes "freezer" with "Mona Lisa". Best slight rhyme ever. LOL!
The gorup of women on the escalator deserve an oscar each for keeping a straight face!!!
The only "group" on the escalator are cut-outs. I'm sure they did not find Peters
Peter's performance funny! 😁🤣
Peter Gabriel - king of videoclips.
Can't believe this didn't chart well as a single - I rate this over David Bowie's Modern Love, for sure (I know they're totally different songs, burt I'm going to compare them anyway!)
+imjustsomeguy72 That was certainly one of Bowie's lightest songs. He did his best to wreck his reputation in the '80s but didn't quite pull it off.
Matt Maloney I don't have a problem with light. I think this is quite 'light' compared to a lot of stuff Peter's ever done. But I still think it's quite good, and deserved more airplay.
+imjustsomeguy72 I don't think Modern Love is the song either Peter Gabriel or David Bowie will be remembered for. They've both done far better.
Matt Maloney I really like Bowie’s Modern Love. Nice jaundiced feel. Not light as some people seeme to perceive.
imjustsomeguy72 - Bowie's Modern Love annoys me.
Aaahh what a song!! this album is a gem, forever my favorite PG solo era!! wish there were footage material covering the tour.
Wow! Peter was actually a ROCK STAR...for a Hot Moment!
In the 70s, gentlemen all wore motocross gear and a fencing mask on dates.
Did they, also, go to a Movie and stick their Peter thru the bottom of a Tub O' Pot Roasted Salisbury Steaks? Me, too. Small world
Classic motoX gear
As well in 2020. lol.
Mark!!! Wow! Fancy seeing you here!
@@krystalmalone1595 Ohhh, Krystal!
I love this song and album. Peters crazy moves make the video for personally, but than I like my PG cray cray
Oh, boy... I'm so happy I didn't see this as a teen. I had a huge crush on him and a bad sense of humour. This would have had me incredibly confused and embarrassed :') It's hilarious now. The crazy moves are strangely cool.
Man, this bass is so carving
Tony Levin: first and always.
This tune always gets me off my ass jumping up and down, you Rock Mr. Gabriel!
You are right man !
My favourite Gabriel video. Can remember this on tv when i was just 7yrs old. This video got stuck in my mind for long time.
Peter was a gorgeous piece of work....even when he was singing a totally perverted song.
a saucy fellow for sure, hot as hell too. mmmmmmm
I totally want to do this next time I'm in an airport.
You'd get jumped by all TSA officers before you can make a twitch.
It will also be your last time.
Finally this video is out. One of my favorites.
He's a genius
my Angel Gabriel! I love Peter Gabriel forever!
i don t think Peter can do that kind of stretch today!!😉
No more.
Filmed, I believe, in the West 12 shopping centre in London's Shepherd's Bush. The footage is interesting, but it definitely needed a decent editor to make better use of the clips. Still a very entertaining watch though.
Got a chance to see this live on a tour here in NYC unbelievable love His work both with and without Genesis. I wish they would reunite before someone passes away🙏🏻✌🏻
Interesting to finally see this in perfect quality. I have a poor quality boot on VHS since the 80's.
gotta love the commitment
Peter Gabriel - Brian Pern
Genesis - Thotch
Modern Love - Love is Modern
Intruder - Naughty Man
Biko - Chinese Meal
Sledgehammer - Spirit Level
I love weirdness and creativity goes hand in hand lol
awesome song!!! I love Peter Gabriel forever!!!
The male version of Kate Bush (Another awesome and creative artist)
Wrong, Kate Bush maybe a female version of Peter Gabriel. Gabriel is way superior to Kate Bush.
@charmelizabeth8584, Well, they did collaborate quite a bit.
@@canalaverdade.I beg to differ. I think both are great but Kate Bush still gets my vote. They both share a unique creative talent and spirit though.
@@faddy24 none of them are great, there is no great in popular music! Popular music is dispendable. But in this inferior popular music environment Gabriel is way superior to Kate Bush. Way superior.
@@canalaverdade. In your opinion, regarding both opinions you voiced. You are no authourity on this and neither am I but I disagree with you on both, particulary about popular music , even Bush and Gabriel, being disposable. I like both a lot, but my aesthetics, taste, heart, soul and mind have a preference for Kate Bush. Let's leave it at that.
Sheer brilliance
Wonderful album
Peter sang this duct taped to a pillar in the middle of the studio.
+hisvorpalsword I trusted his penis was untouched in Herschel.
Just the chorus
Brilliant! where was I hiding when this was out? Never heard it until today.
This video was inspiration for Jamiroquai 's virtual insanity for sure!
The Master !
i love the acting this guy since Genesis.
How about a coincidence, just recently heard this on the radio and love listening to it ,never heard it before or had i ? Looking through my late father s records and guess what i find ....great track 👍
I like the way the drummer had that drum fill for the intro of the song.
Who was on drums, you? and I thought it said MODEM Love at first.😅
great track still in 2021!
Arcangelo mio!
:)))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))
tra i GRANDI!!!!
Modern Love can be a strain like this thing on my face.
Heehee, modern love can be a strainer!
The thing I love most about Peter is his ability to be like; Hey look, I'm just a regular guy like you.
Pop forward a year or two and this would have been a convincing song from the Jam. Steve Hunter is just a beast of a guitarist.
JAJAJAJ QUE GENIO PETER!!!!
How have I never seen this until now?
Thanks very much for posting this! I had somehow missed this video's existence. It's outstanding!
O prtimeiro sucesso depois do Karma Genesis não tem como esquecer....... Peter Gabriel !!!
Great
sublime
It's still brilliant. Everything about this song still makes me smile (even laugh). It's like a form of self mocking grunge pop yet neither throw away nor taking itself too seriously. And the clip... that attitude. So, so far ahead of its time.
This song owes so much to Roger Chapman and the band Family.
This song is more relevant now than when it came out. Great song from a great album.
I love this!! Great energy. Thank you.
The best jam bass of all time
Peter the Great!
Good song, best listened to on the radio :)
I LOVE this!!!!!!!!!!
Exactly my feelings too !!! .. Should have been massive !
love it
let me just say... dayummm! weird but awesome.
I don't know how he could have engaged in any modern love in that getup. Great song, though!
Peter always succeed to disturb
I love Peter, and this video is awesome! One of the best videos ever
Gabriel no existence queen supere tu incredible talento...
steve hunter's guitar rocks too
Une des meilleures intro que je connaisse !
Peter you extremely barmy, yet incredible man, you!
I love this guy so much
The structure of this song has so much of "The Who" in it, especially the guitar flourishes that I wonder if Pete Townsend ever checked his recordings to see if he actually wrote it. I'm not trying to put "Modern Love" down as it's a classic, but it certainly does sound like a Who song.
A lot of people have pointed that out actually. But given how sophomoric most Who lyrics are this actually has some lyrical complexity.
Peter Gabriel is a pretentious egomaniac? You mean Pete Townshend, right? Peter Gabriel comes across as so shy. I couldn't see him having a huge ego.
Andy Parkinson how is Peter an ego maniac? I genuinely want to know why you believe this. I don't want to argue, just simply hear why.
It also sounds like a lesser known Brit band that I cannot remember - a guy's name that starts with an F? Anyone know?
TheNightmare75II His ego blew him out of Genesis for goodness sakes
Brilliant song. Stunning video.
Though he created groundbreaking videos later on, this one is my absolute favorite for its sheer simplicity yet a quirky and wild concept.
PG genio de genios !!
F- ing hilarious video! Love this song
GREATNESS..🇬🇧
When I first saw this video a few years ago, I couldn't stop laughing at his silly moves!.......Doesn't take much to make me laugh! 😆
Luv the song,though!
AHHHHH! Genius.
One of my musical influences!
If Bruce Dickinson was an engineer for Peter, this song needs more cowbell.
Once I started reading your comment, I thought it was going to be an Iron Maiden reference. Probably due to the fencing bit.
Pity, when i've got so much passion romance Is out of fashion
Can't handle modern love at all
Happy Anniversary, Peter Gabriel (1) (Car).
wow wow
Classic Pern
The song has held up well, released 40 years ago. The video, not so much.
Toute ma jeunesse!
❤ A fantastic tune. Gritty 😊👍✌️🤘🏴☠️💖😎
DIDN'T KNOW THIS ONE TOO
INTERESTING 😊🙏💜🌹🕊️1️⃣🌏
Did you have all my comments? 😊
nutty yes.so HAD to be!!!
Essential Gabriel.
I love you Peter
Fripp on lead guitar?
Him or Steve Hunter, yep.
Oh gosh, I'd never seen this video before! I *love* The Ruling Class - "I put that in my galvanized pressure cooker and...zoom! It's gone!" Top shelf O'Toole! And what a great video *this* is! 🤩
Grande Peter! 👍
Aaah the pain!!!
peters first 4 solo records are painfully underrated (mostly the first three)
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I can really relate to this song, it's must be about internet dating, way ahead of it's time.
Forgotten song! Thanks
Absolutely wonderful ❤️ Love this!
I do this in tescos all the time 😂
