    After watching this, I rectify, the transformer is only here to adapt the impedance and it doesn't protect the capsule from 48V because it is present on pins 2 and 3.

    before i watch, mine literally broke in a day and the solder got detached from the top of the cap. i was so confused bc the fall wasn't even that high.
    edit seeing you disassemble this thing makes me wonder if i got a copy... which is weird cause the thing sounded pretty nice

    Could I put pop filter material on the inside in front of the capsule?

    • @ThePhilStudio
      @ThePhilStudio  8 месяцев назад

      I am not sure I think there is already a small foam filter in there. You could definitly add one inside the capsule as long as it's not making contact with the membrane of the mic itself, just to avoid changing the sound or even blocking it.

    nice demonstration. Since there are so few parts that are not destroyed in repair ,,what do you actually do when you repair one,, and,,, does the cost of repair outweigh the replacement cost?

    • @ThePhilStudio
      @ThePhilStudio  4 года назад +1

      Hello there, I work as a tech in a big repair shop and since we have some deal with the manufacturer, it can be worth repairing, most of the time. I think you will save some buck only in the long run if you replace the capsule as it can be most expensive part of the SM57.

      @ThePhilStudio  4 года назад +1

      @@HazeAnderson yeah sorry, I though the info on the transfo were there. But the info was harder to find. I could read somewhere that the transfo would be something around 10ohm : 300ohm. Which means the ratio is 1:5. The method for measuring a transfo can be quite more complicated than just measuring the resistance on each winding. The best is to inject a known signal on one side of the transfo and measure it on the other side.

    I have an sm57 that has black wires instead of the usual green and yellow wires. How could I figure out which way to solder the wires and if I were to connect these the wrong way round and try to use it, would I damage the microphone?

    • @ThePhilStudio
      @ThePhilStudio  3 года назад +1

      That's a good question. After more research, I realized I was a bit wrong concerning the transfo and phantom power. There's really few risk of damaging the capsule with phantom power since it's applying 48V on pin 2 as well as pin 3. But to answer your question, inverting the wiring on the xlr plug will not be a dangerous modification. I guess all it will do is invert the phase. When the diaphragm will be pushed, a negative voltage will be applied and vice versa.

    • @HR2635
      @HR2635 2 года назад

      it will just reverse the polarity.. you can check it simply by assembling the mic.. capture a short sound like a handclap. In you DAW zoom in on the waveform. If the initial wave goes up, then its OK, if it goes down, you need to shift the wires around :-)

    • @MrAdopado
      @MrAdopado 8 месяцев назад

      @@HR2635 It reverses phase. We are talking about AC not DC i.e. the voltage is constantly switching +/- with the frequency of the AC generated by the capsule.

      Either it's missing a wire on the XLR which is pretty easy to fix or the capsule is damage which will need a replacement. Make sure all wires connections are fine from the capsule to the XLR.

      Hey there, it happened to me twice while repairing and this is a fatal error unfortunately. The best way to go on this would be to replace the whole capsule. The diaphragm is reallly really fragile and if it fell off, it was probably already affected a little bit.
