My first two mics were an SM57 and a Rode NT-2a The 57 was obviously cheaper but over a decade later I still use it all the time! The Rode has long been retired.
I'm really happy that yt for some unknown reason lead me to your channel. Very good video, very underrated channel. Thank you for all the time you spend making these videos!
The king shit of mics, I have 2 that I use for everything. I do pair it w/ a Klark Teknik mic booster for vocals though, have had issues with noise on vocal tracks with big dynamic range & this solves that.
I am a microphone noob. Years ago, i had to find me a mic that could record just the opposite of what the SM57 registers. :) (I needed to record background noises coming from mainly one direction). That was the time i learned about microphones a bit more. I tried several microphones, and i learned about the differences. I totally get your reasons for why the described mic is perfect for your needs. 👍
I wonder just how glad Shure is to have this thing. I mean, everyone's bought one of them! We've got one, too. Even you, dear reader, have one! What do you mean, you're not a musician and don't know what an XLR cable even is? That's no excuse not to own an SM57! The only viable excuse is being a rapper or beatboxer. They get to have an SM58 instead, if they so choose. :p
I dont get the misconception that less sensitive mics pick up less room. Why would you think that?! They just pick up everything less loud. How much room you get depends on the polar pattern. Another thing I hate about the 57 is how hard it is to change the grill. Youll most likely rip apart the diaphragm in the process.
Very good points, thanks for the comment! Of course the sensitivity in and of itself isn't going to magically remove room sound, but I do think it can indirectly help. For instance, dynamic mics being less sensitive means you can get far closer to them without fear of peaking, and that proximity means you'll get an improved direct:indirect ratio - and so proportionally less room sound in your recording compared to speaking into a condenser mic from further away. Combine that with the excellent off-axis rejection of an SM57 compared to a lot of similarly-priced cardioid condenser mics I've used, and the result (for me and for plenty of beginners I've worked with) is less room in your final recording. But you're right to point out that that's not solely a function of reduced sensitivity.
i brought mine back out after watching this and other videos and i'm not sure about it??? it sounds like the highs are non existent. maybe sweetwater sent me a bad one.
I love your delivery and editing. You are quite funny too. Subbed.
Thanks so much! Glad you enjoyed :)
'proof we don't live in a simulation' is a brilliant expression

Totally - a staple for 60 years!
Yes! 😂👍
I miss my 90 degree angled SM57. Best sounding mic I've ever had.
praising the best mic whilst demonstrating how to hold it properly
Takes practice but worth the effort!
5:25 😂😂
I would've liked this video, but the counter is perfectly sitting at 100 right now, so I'll leave this comment instead. Loved the video!
Hey thanks, appreciate it! :)

amen
It's a hella litty mic!
No lie detected.

Damn :( sorry to hear it! The highs on mine aren't crisp by any means but definitely existent. Anything a bit of EQ could fix?
If you want to avoid plosives with an SM57 this is the easiest way to do it.
Onions are good all chopped up and in my soup.
It looks like a joke about Andrew Huberman!😂😂😂
And Tom Petty liked them
Enough said 🙏🙏
The Nokia brick phone of mics.
