    You should do a video on the production of The Killers first album. They only used sm57's on everthing, and a 58 on Brandon's vocal. After they were signed, it was all redone in a fancy studio, but were unable to recreate the raw power and energy. So they ended up mixing the demos they recorded themselves, and that's what we know and love!

    PSA from an engineer: It is best to not mic directly on the center-cone while close mic-ing. It is bright, but you'll get some woof a lot of the time. Just put it slightly to the left or right of the cone or pull it back an inch or two for consistently good bright sounds.👍

    Great video, I'm an "old - school-er", and long ago, an SM57 was the only mic I could afford to have several of. These mics are bullet proof, and can truly handle any application if you take the time to optimize its placement. Back in the eighties, an engineer told me, that while exotic, and expensive mics do offer nuances for different application, if you don't have the proper environment to maximize their intended use, i.e., acoustically treated vocal booth, etc., that $2,500.00 mic may be more trouble than it's worth. SO thank you for helping the younger crowd realize that the magic is in the music, not necessarily the hardware. By the way, that track you recorded was great.

    I teach in a university now (video production class) and I always tell my students to use RUclips as much as possible because they’re so much good information. Lots of knowledge in short periods of time. When I studied audio production (didn’t actually finish the carrier) it took a whole semester to understand mic positioning and with no live examples… I don’t discourage people from studying creative careers, but we live in a time where you can learn everything you need free online if you really want to learn it and put it in the time and discipline. And even if you do study in university for a creative career, still use RUclips and the internet as an extra learning tool, not just what you learn in class. It’s suuuuch an amazing advantage. Your channel is a great example of it

    Nice. I keep two 57s on hand at all times. They're probably 30 years old. I just thought it was my own weird preferences from decades of playing live and knowing which gear has never let me down. Good to see a generation younger than an old coot like me still seeing the value in such a workhorse mic.
    They're like the Fender Telecaster of microphones.

      @hellomate639 11 месяцев назад +3

      I'm glad to see this, I liked the 57s more than the sm7b in one of the comparisons. I like mics that boost the trebles because it's always easy to reduce treble to make sound warmer because you're subtracting information, whereas boosting a weak treble is like trying to add information.
      Those "tinny" treble notes are the most important part of making music sound real and organic as opposed to artificial and sine-wavey.

    • @PhaythGaming
      @PhaythGaming Год назад +11

      @@scotmeaney5013 The most important thing to remember is the frequency response of the mic. This isn't always true of course, as frequency response isn't everything, but in this case it's extremely relevant. The main difference between the 58 and the 57 is a boost in the high mids on the 58 and a sharper dip in the highs. When EQ-ing, make sure to tame those high and use additive eq to bring out some of the high mids you lose. Then, use a high pass to take out a solid chunk of your bass, sometimes even pushing into the low mids. Cut around 2 db from 500 hertz and then eq the rest to the voice. This will give you a great jumping off point for a mix and make the mic way easier to work with. (this also makes the mic more similar to an SM7B with the EQ sliders on the back set to bass roll off and neutral. Add a medium wide Q around the 1000 hz range to emulate the presence boost on the SM7B.) I would use a clear EQ to do these changes, but you could also try things like the Pultec emulations in Pro Tools, or any flavourful parametric EQ that tickles your fancy.
      Hope this helps in your 57 mixing efforts. If you are still struggling, might I recommend using a large diaphragm condenser in your closet. Getting something cheap like the AT2020 or the ART C1 (a personal favourite of mine) and putting it in a closet surrounded by clothes for sound dampening is sometimes easier than trying to make the 57 work. At the end of the day though, you can get everything you need done with a 57, so it's not a bad idea to learn how to make it work.

  • @PhilDoleman

    I always carry one in my bag. I'm an acoustic performer, and I don't use pickups in my instruments. If, at a gig, the mic that the sound engineer picks doesn't really work, we'll try the 57, and it always does the job. I usually don't even have to take mine out of my bag as they already have one (actually they have 10). The big bonus though is that the engineer knows what to expect from a 57. A fancy, expensive mic might be amazing, but if the engineer has never encountered it before they might struggle to get it to sound as good as they could, simply through unfamiliarity and time constraints.

    • @JunkBondTrader
      @JunkBondTrader Год назад +2

      @@drinkinslim the 58 and 57 are pretty damn close, the 57 a little bit flatter sound, the sm58 with subltly more proximity effect and a broader upper mid boost. Layered in a recording, the difference is negligible. So if the 57 is a legendary mic, the 58 can't be not great. The difference is so subtle yet it has the pop filter, and that's why you always see singers using the 58 not the 57. The beta is better, lots of mics are better than the sm series, but they cost more. The 58 is a great mic, especially for live singing,

    I was just talking with a couple friends about the SM57 and how it's such a workhorse. I still think it should be everybody's first mic. Even as you upgrade to mics better suited for more specific things, the 57 will live forever in your mic collection. Heck, Sufjan Stevens recorded 2 of his most famous albums with a pair of SM57s and a C1000. That's a pretty ringing endorsement for me!

    I pretty much agree with the choice of the SM57, a work horse of the industry for almost 60 years now (introduced in 65). They do have a proximity effect so you have to be aware of that and know what you will be mixing it into. For the singer songwriter with guitar mix, you probably want the wider fuller sound. To cut thru a "rock" mix you probably want a cleaner more direct sound with a bit more high end. But you really have to let your ears be the guide. But yes, what a great all around mike. You almost can't go wrong if you can only buy just one or two mikes. Of course todays choice of mikes is like going to a banquet. Always let your ears decide. Just because its a condenser, or ribbon or dynamic doesn't necessarily say if it's good for a given task or not. What really turned me on to the 57 was many years ago I had gotten my first Neumann and was so proud. Great vocal mike, but I wasn't quite happy with my guitar sound. So I'm reading one day and some one said, you know, of all the mikes I've tried no matter how expensive, the SM57 is still the best mike for a Marshall. I immediately tried one and sure enough, for guitar, it blew away the Neumann. I have 4 in my mike cabinet since then along with my other dynamics and condensers. But each has it's own "voice" and again, one must use their ears, not price or looks, to determine the best mike for each situation. You will quickly come to know your mikes and what they "sound like".

    • @JunkBondTrader

      you'll figure it out. It mostly has to do with the enironment (less echoes = better), but also mic positioning. Subtle changes to mic positioning can drastically change things. If doing a stereo performance with 2 mics, the setup becomes even more crucial.

    Beautiful performance and great work! I just finished a video project myself where I only used a single Shure SM58 for every source. Shure makes fantastic gear for musicians at any level. Coincidentally I had a problem with bass as well. I recorded and filmed with using just a DI and didn't realize my interface did not have enough outputs to run a reamp chain until everything was already finished. Bravo!

    I bought one of these becuase of this video and it's the best mic I've ever bought. I'm looking to upgrade along the same lines some day for vocals though. Looking at the re20 family and the SM7B. Thanks for your work!

      The RE20 is an excellent mic. So is the SM7B. I highly recommend you try find a music store that rents equipment, and try them both, because it depends a lot on your vocal qualities which one will be best for you.

      @@JunkBondTrader Thanks for the advice! I am a tenor and I have a fairly bright sounding voice but I find the SM57 to be a hair dark at times, especially for quiet vocals. I also have an lct 440 that sounds pretty amazing but I still have a slight issue with room reflections. From what I have read I think the re20 might be good, but like you said, I would need to test it. Thanks again!

    When I first got into recording, we were in the living room of a rental house and the only mics we had were SM57s. And those recordings still hold up to this day. It's amazing what you can produce with a little creativity.

    Shure SMs are legendary. Peter Gabriel used an SM even in studio (up until So) with the reasoning that he would be using one during live gigs, therefore - what the people in concert should be the same on the record.

    Shure SM57. I bought my first one in 1978 for $99. I can't count how many I've owned and used since; but, I own at least 6 and just ordered 4 more; and they are still $99. Huge thumbs-up to Shure for this legendary work horse and for not gouging in a world currently obsessed with worship at the alter of gouge.

    had a sm7b for 5 years before getting a sm57 for tracking instruments, and tried it out for my voice, and ended up liking it better because i didn't need my cloudlifter and it sounded the exact same for my voice. I've found some uses for the sm7b tracking instruments or harsh screaming vocals and stuff though

    • @JunkBondTrader
      @JunkBondTrader Год назад

      I think the difference is more pronounced for spoken word, the sm7b is great for narration/podcast, while the sm57 is a bit flatter, great for music. Both will do both jobs great tho for sure.

    Great production , music sounds amazing . The very first mic I ever owned was a sm57 and I like it BUT with some EQ adjustments , I would say the shure sm58 would be the only mic you would ever need . Sm58 sounds more warm, full and natural . Sm57 is bright and sharp when comparing .

    I've used SM57's for recording electric bass from an amp, cello and double bass for auditions, and even percussion (from quiet tuned percussion to the big stuff), and it just works. The limiting step is definitely my interface (can only record mono audio w/ it rn), and i've never had an issue w/ it.

    It really depends on many factors but what I have been advising folks that want to get into what I do (online courses) is get the Shure MV7. For $250, it provides a great sounding dynamic microphone with a built-in USB interface _and_ XLR capability. Additionally, Shure provides a nice program to apply audio processing while recording (if desired) - which replaces the need for an analog audio processing strip. While this doesn't sound as great as the SM7B, it is more than enough for most folks starting out - and most folks would not be able to tell unless they did a controlled side-by-side test. At that point, you're just splitting hairs.

    The SM57 was one of the first microphones I ever bought. Although as a voice actor I would have to say my all-time favorite is the sennheiser 416 because of its versatility. Not only can I position the 416 out of the way when reading copy but it's proximity effect (for me) works well. That said, for years I managed with the SM57. At the end of the day I think providing you have a room/booth with good acoustics you can get away with most decent microphones.

    • @AudioHaze

    • @RolandDobbins

      You'd be better off with an MKH50 than a 416. The 416 is intended for outdoor work.

    I have a few 57s and 58’s it really is all you need. 57s on the drums, guitars, bass, everything. They are tanks too. They fly across stage, knock people out. Sm57 doesn’t care, it just picks itself up and moves on.

  • @BrunodeSouzaLino

    Biggest proof that this microphone is versatile is the entire sound of the first Woodstock was recorded with SM58 mics. The SM57 and 58 are the exact same microphone with their only difference being the 58 having less proximity effect and highs because of the ball with foam which forces you to speak far away from the capsule.
