Hi, LeAnne! French bread was the first bread I ever made. It turned out so wonderful which gave me courage to try others. I have a Mennonite Community Cookbook, but mine was put together by Mary Emma Showalter. It belonged to my grandmother. Published in 1950 and her copy reads ‘renewed 1978.’ The back is coming off it but I still treasure it because she and I used to make cookies and cupcakes from it. Thanks for showing us how. I’m bringing a thermos of tea to have with my slice.

Humidity definitely plays a role in making French bread and yours looks amazing! We love making French bread pizza, poor boy sandwiches and sometimes just eating it with a little bit of butter. Great recipe!
I got mine for $100 at a real estate auction. I prefer older equipment. My 8 year old 6 qt mixer has some bearings break and husband repaired it himself but it can no longer knead dough.
@@MennoniteFarmhouse Reason I need one is my hands cant kneed dough anymore without them going numb. I have Carpal tunnel syndrome and Diabetic nerve pain, so it will help a lot.
That gear you are talking about broke in my Kitchenaid also. Actually I busted two Kitchenaid mixers making bread. Then I got a Bosch and love it. More powerful motor. Just recently bought the Bosch Compact which is much smaller so works better for just one small loaf. Haven’t had it long enough to give a review but so far it is outstanding. Each Bosch has a powerful motor that lets you knead longer than 5 minutes-which is all Kitchenaid recommends or would stand behind when my first one broke-plus suction cups that keep the thing from dancing across the counter. (No, I don’t work for them or have any affiliation with Bosch.) 😊
Coming back to rewatch this video and to get the recipe printed and saved. With the state of the world I do want to be able to make my own French bread. We love it as either a giant sub sandwich, made into garlic toast but mainly as French bread pizza. With it being just the two of us I think I'll split this into three loaves and par-bake two of them then freeze to enjoy later. That is...if I can get them away from hubby after their bake. He'll likely give me big puppy eyes and want to just eat them fresh and as-is. How can you resist your dear husband? lol Thank you for all the great content you make for us, LeAnne.

Your bread looks like a perfect loaf of French bread right from a bakery! 😋 I have a French bread pan, and I don't like it so far. I need to use parchment paper as the bread stuck to the pan without it. I could almost smell the bread. I've been making bread, having some for dinner for the 2 of us and freezing the rest for another night. Keeps us from scarfing down the entire loaf/loaves in one sitting! That's a great idea to have the video separated by chapters so that it's easy to find anything that was missed. Can a normal dish cloth be used if we don't have a pastry cloth? Great video!
Thank you! I’m finding how that chapters helps with the RUclips algorithm as well. It gets searched more that way. You can use a dish cloth or plastic wrap, as long as not drying out and no dust is getting in. Thank you!
Oh that looks good could you add garlic and cheese on top before you bake it? And after sliced can you add butter garlic and cheese and melt without drying it out to bad?
Brenda, Absolutely….you can to both! When everything else is mixed together then you can add extras to bread dough. The one load that I took to church, I cut in half and spread a mixture that I made at home of softened butter and garlic seasoning. I put the to in my stand mixer and beat it til it was well mixed. Then I put the bread back in the oven until the butter was melted. I had one piece come home that day from church m!

I have done it with wheat straight from the combine that my husband grew and I added a 1 Tbsp of vital wheat gluten. The loaf was good but was a little different texture than with the KA bread flour. Im sure it will be great!

I will copy your video step by step and hope it looks as amazing as yours ! I’ve never seen such beautiful French bread ! I’m going to try this with freshly milled whole wheat flour. I’m assuming the hydration will be different, but think it will work. 🤞

Linda, my first question what type of knife are you using? It needs to be sharp! Razor blade will work as well. Or you are over proofing them. LeAnne

Can you freeze this dough? I am a family of one and two large loaves is too much.
I’m sure you could smaller loaves and freeze before the second rise.
Could you half this recipe for one loaf and have it turn out the same ?
