  • I installed a ~28 year old operating system known as windows 3.11 to see if it would stop tech support scammers from going through their script. The results were pretty hilarious.

    I did this to a Microsoft scammer once. I was playing around with Windows 3.11 (because it's the first windows with built in networking) in a VM and a scammer called. I played the role of an old man. When the technician started telling me where to go, I kept saying that I can't find what he's saying...This went on for almost 2 hours and escalated up the chain to 4 different techs. Finally, the boss got on the phone and said that Windows 3.11 was too old and that I needed to upgrade. Still playing the old man, I said, "well, you're Microsoft, right? So why don't you upgrade me now while we're on the phone. I'll pay you. I got my credit card right here". He hated me telling me that because that meant I was an easy mark, but they had no way to take my money that I was so readily to part with. He kept telling me that I needed to buy a new computer. I said, why, when this one works perfectly fine. I don't need the newest and latest of everything...I told him that my 1950 Buick Roadmaster was still running great from when I bought it new. My 1949 Zenith Refrigerator still works and my Philco TV still gets the local channels! I said that's the problem with you young folk...don't know the value of things because you don't keep them long enough to value them! He insisted that he can't work on my computer because it's too old! I said, that it wasn't too old when I bought it in 1994! I said that I got a free copy of Lotus 123 and Wordstar which I still use! I kept this fool on the line for another hour!
    That was fun! I enjoyed myself with that one!

Consistently implied he owns more than one, without spelling it out for the scammer. Kept pressuring the scammer to identify which specific vehicle he is calling about.

      don't get me wrong my dads a dickhead and I don't like him, but even despite how I feel about him it made me so fucking angry. how can they so callously trick a clearly confused and disabled old man, who was saying the entire time "oh i'm really not sure I should be doing this, I'm worried, my wife deals with the money but she's having surgery" and still sleep at night? we live below the poverty line, if they hadn't been so greedy and not flagged the fraud detection they'd have literally ruined our lives. it was genuinely so surreal to come home and see the exact remote access programs that I see in scam baiting videos installed on his pc. I backed up his important files and then wiped the whole pc just to be on the safe side. we had to have a serious talk with him about what to look out for in scams and especially that its always better to be suspicious and he no longer has the login for the savings account (at his own request). All I really remember from the DOS part of the computer was this matchmaker game. You typed in up to 8 girl names and 8 boy names and then the program had all these hearts going in a circle and then randomly it would match a girl and a boy name together. This was endlessly entertaining for a 3rd grader who would put her friends names in and laugh at who the computer matched them up with😂

      The internet was a great place until 1996 or 1997 when too many "regular" people started getting on it. It pretty quickly turned into the horrible cesspool is is now. Back in the early days, there was no spam, no pop ups, no BS of any kind, just a zillion different websites that were hard to find, but all had some new info on them. It actually took some doing to host a webpage back then, so all the pages had a purpose, it wasn't every idiot with their phone spewing crap 24x7 like it is now

    That one scammer really kept trying to push the scam. Even as you read the wikipedia article that said exactly what he was doing, he just kept trying to pretend he was legit. He tried so hard and got so far, but in the end it doesn't even matter. He had to fall to lose it all, but in the end it doesn't even matter.

      It's too bad the interne went to shit when too many "regular" people got on it though. The internet back then was so pure, seemingly limitless, and not full of bs, scams, popups, social media, etc. Those were the days! Like everything, once it was for the masses, it went to absolute sh**

    I have an idea, pretend to be someone that's fully blind. Have accessibility on that'll read everything on the page out loud. I'm sure they'd scam someone who can't see at all, as it'd be easy to pretend something went wrong (wouldn't even have to bring up the notepad for the "refund") or if they'll feel safe enough to change the amounts for the bank account without covering it up as the victim can't see at all. May think they wouldn't have to bother, but I'm pretty sure you can highlight it or click on the word/number and it'll say it outloud, so the victim would still know since accessibility would read them the amounts. Though could see if they'd lie and say they accidentally did more.
    Honestly I'm just curious. I know a lot of people that are blind and still use computers and phones with braille keyboards and such. It would also waste more time.
    I would like to add that im not sayi g he has to blind himself to do this, but would be better to research how a blind person would navigate their PC/Phone to make it more believable.
    He could refresh the bank page "accidentally" after they've changed it without realizing and them having to quickly change it back, or take a lot longer to get to the store cause he'd either have to walk or take a cab. He would also need the scammer to be a lot more patient and quieter so he could hear what's on the computer. As for reading the gift card and such, he could have an "associate" help him out on redeeming it.

      @@youreperfectstudio4789 oh yes, I forgot you can change the speed. He could take up more time by having to sit and listen to everything on the screen

      Maybe "legally blind" rather than fully. Sounds very difficult to try to use a computer fully blind without lots of practice

    • @Univerzion
      @Univerzion 2 года назад +14

      @@RubelliteFae I mean, he'd only be acting 🤣 not saying he's gotta close his eyes.
      Granted I would probably do research on how a blind person would navigate a PC to make it more believable. Would also get in contact with some blind people, or simply watching videos on how a blind person interacts with their PC or Phone. I know for a smart phone they can use Talkback, which will read their screen outloud for them. Same thing on PC.
      Everything else all he'd need to do is make it believable, which if he can make someone believe he's a woman with a husband trying to open a black hole with microwaves, I'm sure he can convince someone he's blind.

      Maybe even have it so that instead of having TTS software reading everything out, he hires a voice actor to read it out in the voice of Yosemite Sam or something.
