Strong is a name of the first men, so I think the blood of the first men supersedes the blood of old Valyria. We see that in Jon’s case too. That is my theory.
Yea pretty much every Targaryen with a first man parent has almost none of the Targaryen features.
@@saljpal3 what about the children of aegon V targaryen and Betha blackwood? Or aegon IV and his blackwood mistress which produced bloodraven? There's only 4 targaryen first man relationships documented and these ones resulted in only targaryen feature children
@@mappingshaman5280 Aegon V eldest son had black hair and Bloodraven had two older sisters that we don't know the appearance of.
The Baratheon’s as well! Robert, his brothers, and his ancestors leading up to his grandmother, which was a Targaryen, all had black hair. When Ned reads the book containing details about the past Baratheon men, he sees that all of them have black hair except for Joffrey.
@@mappingshaman5280and Bloodraven is an albino
Black hair and purple eyes like Rhaenys and Bittersteel looks awesome. Although default Targaryen looks and the ones that don't look like Targaryens are still pretty cool.
Yeah reminds me of house Dayne something about regular looks with the purple eyes is sick
@@JonathanVegaa I know they are so cool!
There's one thing about the blood of the dragon you don't have to look the part
Just need to have the merits to have it
Mean that blood can be thicker than water appearance is one thing but the bond is still there you have to marry a non drag rider again and then the blood would be lost
I also find the albino characters in the books pretty interesting like Misery and Bloodraven.
@@saljpal3 They should've made show Mysaria look just like in the books
I'm fairly convinced the baratheon look is actually the durrandon look. Remember that in the books, orys was described as having black hair and eyes while all contemporary baratheons have black hair with a specific texture and deep blue eyes.
I think this became the baratheon look after orys married the daughter of the last storm King, her genes are actually the dominant one which makes sense since they are said to be descended from the storm gods
All first men genes seem to be very dominant.
Maybe Ory's passed down the black hair and the blue eyes from his wife.
Not all Baratheons had blue or even black eyes. As it's said, Rhaenys had purple eyes and her children and grandchildren in the books all looked Targaryen. Of course, the Targaryen blood may have been stronger while the rest of House Baratheon were more dominant between the Baratheon blood and the Durrandon blood. The only time the Targaryen blood wasn't stronger was in Rhaelle and her son and grandsons.
@@jedimasters1462 thats because rhaenys is not a baratheon, her mom was. rhaenys is a targaryen and got the purple hair from her dads side, so her children are targaryen looking.

the real nemesis of the targaryen dynasty is a good looking brunet to ruin it all
1) Rhaenyra falls for harwin = the dance of the dragons
2) Rhaegar falls for lyanna = the downfall of the targaryen dynasty
a good looking brunet with black eyes is almost a sex dream or many off us
In the show, Daenerys marries a tall, large handsome brunet barbarian = starts up the conquest of a large part of the continent and slaughters many enemies.
Fell in love for a handsome, mysterious brunet mercenary = starts up the Slave Wars.
Fell in love for Jon Snow = starts up the massacre of many Westerosi, attempts global takeover, gets deleted by Jon in order to save the world from her maddening authoritarian vendetta-seeking wrath against humankind and thus ends the reign of the Targaryen.
@@ionelstoica7082 That must explains why the Valyrions turned black in the show.
The dance of the dragons would have happened without Harwin. The only thing Harwin did is raise tension and give rhaenyra some dragon riders.
@@ptolemeeselenion1542 again she would have freed the slaves regardless of daario or not. In fact she had already freed astapor when she met him, and was trying to free yunkai. Furthermore in the books, all the tyroshi INCLUDING DAARIO dye their hair, so its unclear if he's naturally brown haired or not.
Laenor Velaryon was 1/4 Targeryen like Stannis and was able to claim a dragom, he only had the Targeryen look because the Velaryons had the blood of old Valyria but they weren't dragon riders.
How cool it would be if Stannis rides one of the dragons
Stannis was 1/8 Targaryen, because Rhaelle (her grandma) was just Half-Targaryen, since her mother was Betha Blackwood. In reality is less than that, because Aegon V, Rhaelle's father, was also Half-Targaryen (his mother being Dyanna Dayne), and Maekar, Aegons father, was also Half-Targaryen through his mother (Myria Martell). Laenor's mother is half Targaryen, and we dont know if Alyssa Velaryons, Laenor's great-grandmother had some Targaryen in her as well.
Valeryon and Targaryens have the same look. Pale skin, purple eyes and silver hair. Both came from the same land. Now a days there is a quota for African ancestry in every movie/series no matter how irrelevant it is. That's why they are shown incorrectly in HOTD as compared to the books.
@@thegeopoliticalanalyst1660 they’re not shown ‘incorrectly’ whatever that means. When you’re adapting something for screen you have to make changes and cuts.
@@slingshot3615 by incorrectly I mean- Corolys is not having pale skin and other valeryons.
Jacaerys... Baelor... Orys... Jon... names of characters that have stuck with me for years. And my King Stannis, his own daughter inherited the dragon dreams.
Also notice how whenever there is a half targaryen the half targaryens never become king because they either die in battle/war or they end up dying from disease or other means. The one half targaryen that comes to mind is the one from the duncan and egg novel the half targaryen half dornish prince.
Yea up until Roberts Rebellion, only white haired male Targaryens can sit on the iron throne.
Baelor Breakspear
@@saljpal3 I mean, isn't the whole HOtD/Dance of the Dragons thingy about a woman who is accepted by quite a lot of noble houses as the rightful suitor of the Throne?
@@andreipop5805 I suppose but in the end she doesn't get to remain on the iron throne.

I really think they should've given the Targaryens in HotD purple eyes.
GoT Targaryens having gray or other colored-eyes can be explained since over the years, they practiced incest less and less by welcoming other families like the Martells
They can't use that excuse for Dany since having the Martells only applies to Rhaegars's Children. Dany's parent are literal siblings.
@@stobityo2934 It's referring to Daeron II (Maester Aemon's grandfather) and his marriage to Mariah Martell, I'd wager.
@@extremegrieferbible
I did not know that info, thanks for informing me!
I stand corrected by you and og commenter.
I agree, but in HotD they do all have the same distinct piercing blue eyes.
No, that’s not true. Blond hair is a recessive trait. Purple eyes isn’t. There are several examples of this in the books, where the blond hair disappeared, but the purple eyes remained.
So, i have a theory on my mind for a few weeks now that i dont know if i read somewhere or i came up with it myself.
Here it goes: There were a lot of dragons in Valyria, right? They were controlled by the 40 families. What determined them to be more powerful? Could have been dark magic or just dragons. If there was a very powerful family with huge dragons, surely somebody could have tamed them somehow and took power which is not good(they guarded their dragons surely, but if they get pass them or kill the guards). They bonded to their dragons by blood. My theory at last is that if you were Targaryen you could only tame with Targaryen dragons cuz your blood was connected, you couldnt bond with any other dragon just cuz you had valyrian blood. Thats why they practiced inbreeding so no other family gets access to their dragons that are bonded to their blood.
Am i insane? Is that general knowledge that i pass as a theory?
Not insane at all! It is not general knowledge. I have seen other people suggest similar things but it is still just a theory :)
I've seen this theory multiple times already. It's nothing new.
I saw lucifer mean lightbringer talk about this, he expanded by saying this is due to every family trapping an ancestors soul in their dragons
that makes more sense ig but how old is this civilization and how can a single bloodline/a dynasty survive that long on incest alone? its biologically impossible
@@alicequinn290 Youre totally right, it is impossible :)) But again there are many fantastical concepts at play we don't understand. For example, some Targaryen stillborns came out the womb with WINGS.
There is one dark haired Targaryen you forgot. Prince Duncan the Small. Eldest son of Aegon the 5th and Betha Blackwood. Named after Ser Duncan the tall. He got his dark hair from his blackwood mother. But none of his siblings got this.
Must be another strong boy
@@gherve222 Unlike Rhaenyra's first 3 boys. Duncan the small is without a doubt a Targaryen. But he does eventually end up disinherited after he breaks his betrothal to the daughter of a Baratheon lord and marries a common girl named Jenny of Oldstones. And when given an ultimatum between keeping Jenny and being disinherited or annulling his marriage to her and remaining heir. Duncan chooses Jenny and gives up his inheritance.
@@gherve222 honestly it's not a surprise as his mother was a blackwood, his grandmother a Dayne, and his great grandmother a martell
In books since Rhaenys is also brunette , Jace, Luke and Joffrey's parentage isn't so _in your face_ like the show
U can see whenever a targaryen married outside the family their first child always have their mother's families appearance.
1. Aemon marries jocelyn baratheon rhaenys has black hair
2. Rhaenyra has kids with harwin their kids all have black hair(can also be attributed to rhaenys)
3. Daeron 2 marries myriah martell baelor has black hair
4. Maekar marries dyanna dayne daeron has sandy brown hair
5. Aegon 5 marries betha blackwood duncan has black hair

For Targaryens with dark hair there was also Prince Duncan the small and Valarr Targaryen (son of Prince Baelor Breakspear). Maybe also Valarr's younger brother Matarys but I don't think we have a description of him
This is just a theory, but I feel like Nettles was George's clue/hint that the Blood isn't needed to ride a dragon. Nettles succeeding in getting Sheep Stealer thorugh unTargaryen ways by continuously feeding the Sheep Stealer sheep until the Sheep Stealer became familiar with her and even most likely came to like her. Her lineage is never confirmed. And a good theory that another RUclipsr Hill's Alive that Queen Rhaenyra wanted Nettles dead not because she suspected her of sleeping or bewitching Daemon, because she's completely fine with the White Worm sharing his bed, so it seems she doesn't mine sharing Daemon, but The Hill's Alive theorizes that Queen Rhaenyra wanted Nettles dead because she didn't think she was a dragon seed and believed her to be a common peasant. Obviously the implications that a common peasant can tame a dragon would really jeapardize the Targaryen's power and would cause others to try do tame dragons and usurp their hold. The threat is clear and it's a good reason why Rhaenyra wanted her dead, because her jealousy isn't a good motive seeing how she already was fine with Daemon sleeping with other women.
Nettles was a Targaryen bastard. She's most likely, a bastard descendant. That's how she managed to tame the dragon but she had just a little Targaryen blood in her, so she needed to do more than just approach it. But dont be fooled, if she didnt have the Targaryen little bit in her, no matter what she did, it would not have worked.
She wanted Nettles executed alongside the other dragon seeds because 2 had already turned to the greens and didnt want them to do the same. Rhaenyra wanted Addam also executed, so it has nothing to do with your peasant theory or the fact she was sleepying with Daemon, it was the fact that she was a potential threat to side with the Greens like some had already did.
I always liked the idea of her being the only person without Valyrian blood to claim a dragon with her intuition and patience. But I'm guessing she's the only exception.
@@Alejojojo6 should be noted though that Nettles is mentioned in the books as not being pretty. Most Targaryens were considering abnormally beautiful. So while her being a bastard implies a possibility of her having Valyrian blood, the fact that she has NO Valyrian features whatsoever (besides her being characterized by Archmaester Gyldayn as not pretty, she had brown skin, black hair and brown eyes) kinda hint in the other direction.
Honestly, having Valyrian blood needed to tame a dragon is stupid. Does having Valyrian blood help tame a dragon probably. I always like the idea of taming a dragon in GRRM world to be similar to taming one in How to train Your Dragon. It doesn't happen instantly. Dragons want riders who share similar characteristics or at least riders that treat them with respect. So it is possible for a peasant to claim a dragon, but it would take a year or two to build a relationship beforehand.
@@zillagrilla315 It’s implied the Valyrians used blood magic to bond the dragons to them. Essentially mixing dragon blood with their own.
Baelor Breakspear is possibly my favorite Targaryen ever. A true knight and prince. Would have made an excellent king. Rip 🐉
Baelor Breakspear was born around the same time as Bittersteel
I always thought it was weird that Quentyn was roasted alive trying to tame a dragon yet Brown Ben Plumm (who also has Targaryen blood) got along pretty well with the dragons. Even Daenerys thought Ben Plumm having some semblance of Targaryen blood was the cause, yet Quentyn was completely rejected despite his ancestor being closer in proximity to him than Ben. Maybe it’s because he attempted to TAME one instead of just hanging out near one? Idk…
Probably. Dragons probably know when someone is just wanting to be a friend, and Quentyn was more aggressive in his approach to them.
The amount of their Targaryen heritage has nothing to do with how friendly Daenerys’s dragons were to them. It has to do with who these dragons like, just like us people dragons like certain people and dislike others. The dragons were friendly and calm with other random people in Daenerys’s circle who don’t have a single drop of Targaryen blood. Ben Plumm flexing with his Targaryen ancestors centuries ago is a joke.
Song of Ice and Fire ending with Stannis riding in on a dragon laying waste to all pretenders would be perfection...

Viserys is a targaryen and Alicent is a hightower but all three of their children Aegon, Aemond and Halaena have full targaryen look and specialities 💯💯
Hightowers are very likely part-Valyrian which made them acceptable marriage partners.
I think the Hightowers usually have very blonde hair and blue eyes which similar to the Targaryens so we can assume with the Hightower and Targaryen genes, Alicent's children had silver hair.
Hightowers share common ancestors with Valyrians just like House Dayne there are many clues for that in the books
House Hightower have Brown hair and are descendants of andals not valyrians
Actually, it is hinted that the first Hightowers predate all of them: "The reasons for the abandonment of the fortress and the fate of its builders, whoever they might have been, are likewise lost to us, but at some point we know that Battle Isle and its great stronghold came into the possession of the ancestors of House Hightower. Were they First Men, as most scholars believe today? Or did they mayhaps descend from the seafarers and traders who had settled at the top of Whispering Sound in earlier epochs, the men who came before the First Men? We cannot know." - from The World of Ice & Fire

Maester, I think Baelor Breakspear is closer in age with his uncle Bittersteel, than Bittersteel with King Daeron II. So I don't think is a whole generation, maybe a couple of years but not as much as 12-15 years.
Correct, Baelor is 2 years older than Aegor

Weird. I was thinking of this exact same subject when driving to work today.
Baelor Breakspear popped into my head for some reason and I started to wonder about the Targaryens (minus their many bastards) who didn't look like the _typical_ Targaryens.
Get out of my head please.
What you might have included is that it alluded to that house Stark and Strong descend from the same ancestor that may have also infiltrated house Baratheon giving them all STRONG genes that tend to dominate.
Its interesting that Robert had such Vitriol towards the Targs, yet his Grandma and his entire line descended from them. Then again, when we look at the story of Maegor and his Brothers, the Dance of the Dragons, and especially the Blackfyres (and how many feuds there were in that)....maybe a Targ's worst enemy is himself.

@@gnomeimporta6912 Well, if George can come up with the Young Griff plot, he sure as hell could make stuff to give Jon a valid claim, and besides, my point is: Book Jon Snow is honorable, but ambitious, very ambitious, and is quite the good politician. Gotta be honest, weird ass idea for a video, but really interesting nonetheless! Keep up like that!
You forgot Duncan the Small, son of Aegon V. Another two you could have included but might be subject to change is Valarr and Matarys, Baelor Breakspear’s two sons, who apparently had black/sandy brown hair.
Maybe Quentyn's mistake was the whip. Maybe the dragons don't like those. Maybe they only like Valyrian commands.
They probably interpreted it as hostility.
What a strong video.
I think is important to remember that is very likely that the valyrians practiced genetical engeeniering, along blood magic. I think that's why when they married outside the family some Targaryens offspring didn't have valyrians features, the valyrian gene wasn't strong 🙃 enough, with some exceptions like Alicent's children, Rhaegar's and Elia's Aegon. Like my mom used to say, she's a doctor. Genetics are the most stubborn thing in the world, you never know how they'll act.

This video about dragon babies is really good
I'm curious about the bi-coloured eyes as a feature in people, including non-Targaryens (ie. Book-Tyrion)
I think Tyrion is the only (non Targaryen) with heterochromia.
Only four characters have heterochromia of the eyes:
Alyssa Targaryen (green & purple), Shiera Seastar (blue & green), Tyrion (green & black) and Euron (blue & black)(possibly not true heterochromia but rather hyphema).
On the topic of heterochromia, if I recall correctly only three characters have it for hair:
Elaena Targaryen (platinum white & gold), Tyrion (pale blonde & black), and Gerold Dayne (silver & black)
I guess you can say strong seed is very strong pun skip over his head.
Maybe it's interesting to make a video about al the branch families.
I'm almost done reading Fire and Blood. I hope that the show will stay true to the book.

No need. No need. I found my way in.
Aemond failed to claim a dragon before Vhagar. At least in show canon, Dreamfyre rejected him. I won't spoil future events in HOTD, but some other characters prove that dragons have a choice in rider regardless of blood. While Targaryen ancestry may or may not be a requirement, it does not guarantee that a specific dragon will accept someone as their rider. It's possible that, had Quentyn hypothetically been presented with a different dragon, it would have accepted him. I believe he failed because he lacked the Targaryen spirit.
WC!!!!!
Everyone shit on the incest part and I get it but they are the last dragonrider family alive. If they mixed their blood too much, eventually they would not be able to claim dragons.
Your videos are very good and well thought out, but your speaker is probably not good and ruins the listening experience, apart from that I really liked it

We don't actually know that as nobody actually knows her history and the book isn't really reliable, as GRR Martin himself said.
we’re not entirely sure that that’s the case since it was brought up that she might’ve been a bastard child of Daemon because of how close he was with her. And her having neither the silver blonde or purple eyes tracks with past targaryen children like Baelor Breakspear and Jon Snow
Poor Quentyn
If people knew about genes that time, it would have been easier to accept the Strong boys as Laenor's sons. Why? Rhaenys is half-Baratheon and the blood is strong.
Rhaynes is more Targ than barathon.
Rhaenys has black hair, not brown. The Strong boys have brown hair. Don’t forget the eyes. There’s no one in their family with brown eyes from Rhaenyra’s nor from Laenor’s side.

The books make it clear that the people believe in seed and blood and that birth outside marriage determines traits, but they are living with the genetics we all know, with traits like dark hair OR dragon affinity OR dragonish stillborn babies OR violet eyes, and some of these traits matter in their lives, and some do not.
"Incest somehow stuck around." I imagine it stuck around because when they moved to dragonstone they were basically outcasts in westeros so most families wouldn't marry them, so the only suitable marriages were between themselves and Velaryons.

Do they know in GOT universe that incest are making those dragon scale baby's and still born? I would assume that after so many years of having like 30% of the babies die before they are born, might have something to do with all that incest and how bad most of them turn out to be when grown up, i bet that comes from that incest as well.
maybe they do realise it's a problem, but they also believe their blood must stay pure in order to ride/ressurrect dragons, so for Targs all those stillbirths must be a price worth paying. Especially when you consider that regular children also died in huge numbers back then, so the fact that the Targ ones happened to have wings, etc. wouldn't have made a huge difference overall.
theres another theory that the targaryen pregnancy process is probably different as well 🤷🏽♀️ dont know how true it is but it is cool to think that targaryens are first dragons and blossom into humans in the womb, i mean dark magic right ? can explain all the heat resistance & dragon bonding . rhaenyra & dany went into early labor bc of their situations (danys womb was sacrificed by a witch early/mid in a pregnancy & rhaenyra gave premature birth because of stress caused by the greens . the dragon babies probably werent fully formed
