Also, we know what happens when the dragon magic of the Targaryens mixes with the greenseer magic of the Blackwoods. Bloodraven was op enough, now imagine him with a dragon.
I find it so interesting that she didn't even give a shit enough to say anything when Willem won. She could have made them a close ally without even marrying him. Just Willem knowing that the future queen realizes how he has the potential to be a fantastic warrior.
There are so many things she could have done and all of them would have been better than what she did. Even after having caused and allowed the duel, and all the consequences that followed, she could have at least tried to salvage the terrible result by acknowledging the boy and treating him graciously after his victory. It would not have improved things with the Brackens but that damage had already been done and it would have been better to at least come away from that with one ally than none. But you see this is a common problem throughout history when it comes to royalty (especially in the real world) and why, ultimately, absolute monarchy failed. They take for granted the loyalty of their subjects and therefore think they can behave, say, and do whatever they wish because they are king/queen/prince/princess and god has chosen them to rule. It's amazing to read history and see royals make disastrous, insulting decisions that turn all their nobles and peasants against them, and then they genuinely become absolutely stunned when those subjects rise against them or support a pretender. Because that ideal they're trained to believe from birth, that their blood is so important that nothing else matters, is so drilled into them that it never even enters their mind that they could push it too far and put their own against them. Its amazing and more than a little sad how many have gone to the chopping block, watched as their entire line is beheaded in front of them, and the whole time, genuinely don't understand why its even happening or how their actions have brought them to that point.
@@mgh7634 Yeah, Monarchs who understand the importance and duties of rule were a dime a dozen, and were amongst the greatest kings Absolute Monarchs that actually made efforts to listen to the people and take their inheritance seriously, like Jaehaerys and Daeron II in their world, did well
@@mgh7634this reminded me about the democrats of USA. How men turned against them... (I'm not from there ) even though there are other factors but it is one of them biggest thing that can end the rule.
The King really failed Rhaenyra. He knew her being the heir after a son was born was going to create issues and he did absolutely nothing to prepare her, nor did he build a court of advisors to advise her. She's selfish and rude, but you have to remember She's a teenager.
He shouldn't even prepare her for the throne because that plant a thought in her that she deserves it. That's the reason she's fighting for it and that isn't good for the kingdom. That's where the king fail,, because of love.
I also dont feel he needed to name an heir so fast, everyone is like "you must declare an heir!" what? What would happen if he didnt? Revolt? ok revolt against the guy with the dragons, the army and money?
I agree with this. He was so focused on a male heir ,he never bothered to raise the heir he had. Where as Otto focused on training Allyson on how to play the game. Rhaenyra felt she was above the rules of the game.
Despite his own ability to keep the peace, during his rule, he failed to pass on those skills to his heir. He failed to instil a sense of responsibility in her or develop any diplomacy skills in her. His negligence in her upbringing was his biggest failure, imho. He also underestimated his brother, whom I don't think gets enough credit for his cunning. He ended up having more influence over Rhaenyra than her father did. I think he deliberately stoked the fires of stubbornness, selfishness and depravity in Rhaenyra, just to stick it to his brother for snubbing him as heir. He was going to make his brother regret his choice of choosing his daughter over his brother and he surely did by sowing the seeds of chaos and conflict.
Rhaenyra is a political disaster and you nailed exactly why. This entire scene really went under everyone's radar or rather Blackwood killing Bracken overshadowed Rhaenyra's poor actions.
I've said this since the Royal Hunt. Rhaenyra wasted countless chances to make truly formidable alliances and friends to instead cry and be jealous of a child instead of doing something about it. It reminds me of the Epilogue of A Dance with Dragon with Kevan Lannister and Varys speaking on Kings and Varys speaking on how Tommen has a right to be king vs "Aegon" Who learned through his many hardships and interactions with people from many different walks of life that Kingship is a duty and privilege
Dude I am SO glad you made this. While watching that episode I literally was screaming at the tv that she'll regret doing this later on. Also Rhaenyra's lack of sympathy for anyone other than herself is annoying and will prove to be to her detriment.
Sympathy is a learned skill and she did not really have anyone to teach her there. The only person who did not fuck with her or betray her is God damned daemon, how did people think she would turn out?! I agree though, this is a massiv flaw of hers and it sure as hell will have consequences
I am so glad that there are other people who are frustrated at her appallingly poor behavior. Most reaction videos cheer her "girlboss moments", but those situations only show how she wrecks her reputation in front of the people that matter.
@@katjas9150 EXACTLY 💯 👏, many people are ONLY on Rhaenyra's side cause "her father named her heir" that's it!. Like seriously that's it, they never mention if she's a good heir, if her attitudes reflect that etc etc etc(personally I'm neutral 😐, like I see both sides, but Rhaenyra should have been better at being heir....for her own sake)
@@redadmiralofvalyria867 i know you said many and not all but just from my perspective I’m not team black only because Rhaenyra was named heir. It’s because of the two viable options her personality is better suited for the job. Maybe the show will flesh it out better than the book did but the other option came across as deeply bloodthirsty extremely quickly, almost giving Maegor vibes. But I absolutely agree that Viserys did Rhaenyra no favors in failing to actually bother to train her for the job
Just blows my mind everytime I see anything about game of thrones that one single person can create such a massive world with such intricate stories and vast lands and religions and beliefs and morals and values . Like I honestly can not wrap my head around it
Majority of it is European and English history based. Read about the War of the Roses 🌹 vs.💮 York's Vs Lancaster's (sound familiar?) What is impressive is how he keeps track of the web he's weaved.
Rhaenyra doesn't seem to quite understand how bitterly disruptive her potential ascension to the throne is going to be, and her father isn't helping her in that regard. She seems to be taking her cues from her uncle who was passed over for a reason. She's not making the powerful allies that she will need to ensure her succession. In fact, she's being rude and dismissive of the people that she will need the most. Power resides where men believes that it resides. She needs to make the men believe that she has power, and so far, she's not doing it.
It feels like viserys is doing actively everything possible to make it as bad as possible.... He fucked up raising her, he traumatised her in regards of the position of a royal woman's role, alienates her, alienaitse their strongest and most loyal ally, he teaches her nothing, he allowed people to disrespect him and disrespect her, creates competition for her...
I've thought about this right since the pilot episode. Why doesn't she have a court of her own? A young court of the heirs and other young nobles of the great houses? Why isn't she travelling the realm, letting her people get to know her? Why does she simply sit in the Red Keep and sulk? How is that any sort of preparation for the Iron Throne?
Exactly the arrogance that exudes from Daemon and Rhaenyra is a weakness that their enemies have clearly been able to exploit already. Rhaenyra for all her charm and intelligence is still a bratty girl with the arrogance that comes with being born into Power. Rhaenyra doesn't know how.
I agree with you about Raenera lacking diplomacy when she got up and left, instead of trying to stop the boys from fighting. I totally expected her to stand up and say something like, "That's enough!" I was shocked when she indicated she was leaving. WTH?
I didn't find it creepy, but I did find it telling... Typically, bullies relate well to other bullies. So, she probably has the psychological makeup of a bully.
Happens in middle & high school all the time. A lot of girls find types like that attractive. And Those Like Willem go unnoticed. And the rare chance that Guys like Willem put bullies in there place. Well, most girls are shocked and in disbelief, cause the kid ruined if not shattered the "Natural Order" of things.
No, she found the whole ensemble boring and the exchange between the Blackwood and Bracken was just something that broke up the boredom That ended up with consequences. Viserys isn't a very good king, he's rather weak as a king and he's not properly grooming his daughter to be a monarch. So she has pretty much nothing in the way of education concerning the political science of her station. She's smart but she's not getting proper direction. She's having to wing it and that is bringing about bad choices.
I hope one person calls out Rhaenyra before the series is over. She made no efforts to make alliances at court. And her attitude towards her suitors could have been better. Viserys could have prepped her better but in the first episode she was studying a huge history tome and Alicent mentioned a septa. As a matter of fact her own kids were being tutored as royal babies. I guess my point is she had enough of an education to know better. I wish she had taken some initiative as soon as she accepted being heir. IF Iwas the heir and a dragon rider, I would spend my youth flying across the realm, learning and making fast friends.
*spoiler* I feel Rhaenyra will get this snap back to reality soon as the Velaryon alliance breaks down. Rhaenys will die and Corlys will switch sides but I wonder what the knowledge of Vaemond’s death and Laenor’s faked murder will do in season 2 and how it will strain things. Daemon will eventually leave her and have his own mistress. Only her last son with Daemon will survive. But this story is a tragedy and I think this show is going to twist the knife a lot as it already likes to do for casual audiences. She will come so close to learning and to making better choices only for things to bomb and backfire in her face; and at the end her life she won’t get a choice.
I'm "Team Rhaenyra" but also can clearly see her flaws. She sees the throne as her birthright as she IS her father's chosen heir but she also has to be worthy of the title. Her decisions and actions show that she has the will to be Queen but not yet the wisdom or discretion. I also agree that her father failed in his duty to prepare his heir for her future position. Viserys' love for Rhaenyra caused him to shield and indulge her but the most loving thing he could have done was to prepare her for the challenges that would be placed before her once he was dead and teach her the skills she would need to forge allies to support her claim and reign.
It is all Viserys fault. He was completely blind to how sneaky and throne thirsty Otto Hightower was, and ignored the signs, like he did frequently with Rhaenyra, towards Alicent Hightower as well. His sickness really impacted him of course but he put too much trust in people following his words. It didn't help his final words were misconstrued by Alicent but I honestly don't think it made much of a difference considering we see how much Otto had planned, and the lengths he went to even saying they should murder Rhaenyra and her children within hours of Viserys death, Otto would have likely forced Aegons coronation with or without Alicents permission. He was probably relieved to hear Alicent say she heard Viserys wanted Aegon to rule likely knowing it wasn't true at all. He didn't hesitate to start barking treason within seconds of hearing it. Out of all the Targaryens we've ever seen, true full blooded ones, Rhaenyra is by far the one with the biggest heart. A close runner up being her mother and Viserys himself.
Im team Raenera too, id rather die with her than Lick the ass of Ottos ego and treachery. People are being a bit too hard on Daemon though, true he can be a bit of a dick sometimes but he is still very loyal. He could have plotted like Otto Hightower to usurp Viseres throne. Yet he didn't, all Daemon wanted was for his brother to recognise he was loyal to him. But Viseres instead chose to be intimidated by him and see everything Daemon did for him as a Threat. Viseres would have been a lot safer with Daemon as his hand, Daemon isnt stupid and as we've seen he can be very cunning sometimes. He is very good at seeing through people and seeing their motivations. Had Viseres accepted this, Daemon would have been his hand and a lot of the problems that caused the Dance of Dragons would never have happened.
@@SelphieTheNutteragreed. I always argue the strongest quality daemon has is that he’s loyal. Honestly had viserys let daemon marry her when he asked this dance could have been avoided, or at least a stronger claim that’s harder to dispute - viserys first two heirs together. Of course they get married later on but at that point it doesn’t have the same effect
Interesting how the traits that might be used in a lesser story to make a teen character seem "plucky and rebellious" in a shallow, protagonist-syndrome way that you're supposed to see as charming are used in THIS story to show what really happens when people in power are as capricious and thoughtless as Rhaenyra is -- chaos breaks out and people die. It's also showing how these actions of Rhaenyra, as a flaky frustrated teen who was not properly trained for power by her (also not very politically adept) father, are having a real effect on everyone's future in all these concrete ways. It's really highlighting the tragedy of these kids and tweens being expected to play a role in high-stakes political games. Great video!
The two are linked in my opinion. Rhaenyra is not particularly great at politics and playing at court, but many Targaryen kings before and after her weren't either. The misogyny and patriarchy in Westeros took what is a problem usually solved with a good hand of the King from an annoyance into a serious problem.
She would have had massiv problems even without her attitude problems, the misogyny in westeros is rampent and well, rheanys got passed over just the same despite way better grace. Her position as a women is already as bad as can be, but she sure as hell does not improve it. There was a massiv prejudice against her and sadly, she falsely proves them right
@@JoeMagician true. But Joffery (all round terrible) and Stannis (good leader, horrible politician) failed to get support, losing it to a better politician in Renly. Rhae still had considerable support from the North, Vale and Riverlands.
@@JoeMagician Thing is Rhaenyra is not only politically an idiot but she also is very entitled and just made bastard children which puts a big target on her back. She does not want to do her duty as a person of high power but have all the privileges of having such a high title. Yes her gender is a issue but it can be overcome.
@Gr8sc0tt yea he was, he gave Ned Stark good political advice in telling him to imprison Cersei and her children as fast so he could stabilize his position, he was able to sway the Tyrells to his side with a marriage pact, and the lords of the Stormlands chose to follow him over their rightful lords, Stannis or Joffrey, that’s because he was charismatic and decent at politics, far better than Stannis ever was that’s for sure
Both Viserys and Rhaenyra think that making it her choice who to marry was a "good thing" when it fact it just allowed all the houses to be bitter about not being picked by her personally. Whereas if Viserys made the match for her, then he would be the one shouldering that and not her. The entire tour was just Rhaenyra sowing bitterness from one house to the next. And then Viserys caved and chose the Velaryons anyway, making them both targets of the ire of all the passed over lords. And Rhaenyra is not helped by her entitlement, because Viserys does not in any way prepare her to lead. We can't expect her not to be entitled, she's a dragonriding princess from the last remaining dragonriding family of the most powerful civilization of all time. But she has not been taught at all about politics, diplomacy, making alliances, and all the princely arts.
the closest we get to him preparing her is occasionally letting her join in on the small council and making her choose the next kingsguard, who she then slept with but that wasnt a political move
I really appreciate how you point out Rhaenyra's flaws, but also place them in the context of a violent system that failed not only her, but also the subjects and vassals under her. I think often ASoIaF fans nerd out over how "badass" Tywin is, or "crazy" Rhaenyra and Daenarys are, and they dont stop to think about the actual implications of these characters' lives and actions.
One of the things I noticed during HotD was that Rhaenyra has almost zero courtiers of her own, except Alicent. While it could be a flaw on GRRM's part, I think it's deliberate - having zero friends and allies from such a young age (again, except Alicent) definitely has repercussions on how well socialised she is, and further consequences on how prepared she is to develop court skills.
Yes there is reasons why noble ladies have courtiers and handmaids that are not just servants, they are noble daughters around the same age who keep company for princesses and at the same time represent their families and nationalities giving princesses a inpression of their home, looks to life and issues they deal with.
Well done, Joe!! And great insights into what may have been overlooked as “fan service”. Rhaenyra’s failures as a leader (lack of courtesy, not stopping the fight, ignoring consequences of insulting/losing powerful allies) all show that her action and inaction communicated volumes to her future subjects!! Like her father, what she does NOT do becomes important ingredients in what leads to eventual civil war!
You are EXACTLY right in your analysis--both in the Bracken and Blackwood feud, AND the signs of really just how unprepared Rhaenyra is for the realities of rule at that moment. Amazing analysis and so glad I found this channel!
This was a review/commentary with a solid moral center. Just about every other reviewer falls along with the nihilism of Westerosi culture. I'm subscribing.
If where not already for a long tìme, me too. The analysis was great but what stands out to me, is that it is not all judgy judgy. He is not mean about it. He does not call her names or looks down on her or anything, it is a very sympathetic approach I adore.
@@ShiNooBi1986 jmchez is talking about how many reviewers overlook how fucked up something is by using arguments like ''meh, but this is Westeros, raping, maiming and killing random people is normal so it's nothing THAT bad''.
Also before the whole sweet home Alabama thing started, daemon and her mom were the only family that seemed to actually interact with rhaenyra, even teach her stuff. Viserys may be a good man, but dude, he is so divided between being a good husband, or dad, or king that he sucks at all of those
I think it’s because none of those things were actually his priority. He wanted to be a builder. He wasn’t a warrior, his brother was. He wasn’t born to be king, he was like the 5th choice after all of the Old Kings other heirs died. He wasn’t a great parent, his wife was. He was just out of his league all around. He just wanted to be left alone to rebuild a new Valeria in Westeros.
i think stories like these really show us what a rare childhood the stark children had, excluding the beheading and the harsh environment they had a lot of love and freedom other westrosi children didnt/dont
I wouldn't say freedom necessarily. They were all still expected to fulfill their societal roles, its just that Ned made them understand why they had to, while still being a suppportive and loving father.
Great analysis and I really hope GRRM thought as deeply about this as you have. Rhaenyra's approach to her own succession is so self-destructive. There is a scene in last week's episode where Otto Hightower drops a giant truth-bomb on Alicent as he leaves the Red Keep by telling her if Rhaenyra is to be Queen that all her children must die for the good of the realm and that she either needs to ready Aegon for the war that will come or that she must cleave to Rhaenyra and hope for ill-considered mercy. Alicent is horrified, but seems to have internalized the lesson and the need for allies. Rhaenyra has never learned this lesson. She has no allies and seems to go out of her way to alienate almost everyone.
But what Alicent fails to realize is that her pushing her son to challenge Rhaenyra's succession is what will get them all killed. I doubt Rhaenyra in the show would have decided to kill Alicent and her children once she became queen. Rhaenyra isn't very wise but I think even she would know that starting off her reign with killing the former queen and her half siblings would not go down well with people. Alicent is the one making herself and her kids threats to Rhaenyra's claim to the throne. If she had ignored her father's words and let Rhaenyra be queen after Viserys' death and caused no problems they all likely would have been fine. So yeah I wouldn't exactly call what Otto said a "truth-bomb" because not all of it was, he just made Alicent paranoid enough to finally stop supporting Rhaenyra. Aegon didn't even want to be king but Alicent had him claim the throne, which caused the war that killed nearly everyone in their families. But yeah you're right about Rhaenyra not taking her status as heir seriously enough like that girl has done nothing to get people to like her and be on her side.
@@Maglors_grief Rhaenyra had three obvious bastards and tried to pass them off as trueborn - which is more of a Westerosi faux pas then having a woman inherit. If she wanted her son to take the throne after her, she likely would have had to eliminate most rivals eventually.
Willem Blackwood defending his honor after it was insulted by Rhaenyra (Which was even encouraging for other lords to do the same without her realizing it.) and then her not even acknowledging his bravery after he comes out on top might say a lot about her as a future ruler to these lords watching. Rhaenyra leaving instead of breaking up the fight was her demonstrating her power poorly. Willem can not only see this as disrespectful to him and his house but it may encourage him to side with the Greens in the upcoming war and that would be a major loss for Rhaenyra because his house actually has one of the strongest armies in the Riverlands. Her being more interested in supper than these lords going out of their way traveling miles upon miles for a chance at her hand in marriage is also a parallel to how she'll be in the future. The first season made her love for food clear numerous times and if I remember right, in Fire & Blood, after taking King's Landing from the Greens, she actually puts on weight from stress eating and her never being able to lose all of her weight from her pregnancies like Allicent did doesn't help either.
When Viserys said Rhaenyra was his political headache he didn't really realize how much she would become the realms political headache... or he just doesn't care.
There is a reason why Westerosi history and historians don't remmeber neither Aegon II nor Rhaenyra as good and capable rulers. Both were spoiled kids who instead of focusing on how to rule focused on how to became ruler. Both were arrogant, unwise and felt entitled to do anything they want in order to get to throne. Viserys was soft and made many wrong decisions during his almost 3 decades long reign but what make him good king is that he knows that you sometimes must sacrifice personal desires for greater good or as Varys said - for the realm. Both Aegon and Raenyra lack this sense of responsibility (with lot of other crucial qualities) and they ended up how they ended up - and well deserved if you ask me. Dance of the Dragon isn't romantic story about Raenyra fighting her half brother for throne. It is lesson in how power kills people who want to weild it but don't actualy have it.
This is when i started to switch over, she sees a relatable young person whos stuck in same political garbage shes in, and seeing him getting bullied puts a smile on her face
Sympathy is a learned skill, she had no one to teach her jet again. What she got is desprespect dissmisal or honeyed words of falsehood or well daemon. This is the only way she encountered of someone commanding respect when it is not given freely...
@@theelectricprince8231 She's a child that has noone guiding her which is her father's fault. Once he announced her as his heir, he should have built a court of people to advise and prepare her for what's to come. Her Aunt is the only person that's tried to be realistic with her.
I 100% agree. A lot of reactors I've seen really love Rhaenyra's little jabs, and I do think they can be fun. However for some time I've thought that they don't show Rhaenyra in the best light politically. She has really taken after Daemon's example that she can do and say whatever she wants because she's a Targaryen and rides a dragon. While this can work in some situations, it will not work in others. Daemon himself suffers politically for the things he does and says and Rhaenyra, as the first female heir, will need even more political support than he will. That doesn't mean that in this episode she should have chosen a husband only for political advantage, but welcoming the men and letting them down politely would have gone a long way. In later episodes, older Rhaenyra appears a little more astute to her situation, but it feels like too little too late.
Just allowing a duel to erupt at a meeting she''s in has effects. The lords now have to worry if they send their sons to somewhere she's in charge, will they come back? They all have enemies and tempers get heated at meetings. A responsible host ensures nobody has to fear meeting them.
I loved House Blackwood in the novels. They kept faith with the Old Gods. Raventree remained as the last Stark loyalist, even after Riverrun surrendered. Alyssa Blackwood(Black Alys), Benjicot Blackwood (Bloody Ben), Melissa Blackwood, Brynden Rivers(Bloodraven). They're just as badass as the Starks. Their liege lords, Tully's on the other hand always seemed opportunistic and barely competent. I hope they become the liege lords at the end of the novel series.
The "Realm's Delight" hasn't learned how to be the Realm's Delight. She had a couple of occasions where she could have met her goals while encouraging others to be on her team. She just expects it so far.
Illustrated perfectly by what happened in the season finale, with her expecting Borros Baratheon to just side with her. Aemond came ready to bargain while Rhaenyra sent her son with nothing but a letter to Borros "reminding him of his father's oath". Borros understands how important his position is and calls out Rhaenyra for taking House Barathon's loyalty for granted
Watching rhaenyra bungle arguably the most advantageous position a princess of the realm can have. Just goes to show how skillful an already married lady valeryeon must have been to have high lords openly declare for her to be queen.
Ser Wiillem Blackwood makes an appearance once again! In Season 2 episode 4: the red dragon and the gold. I am here to comment after watching this episode.
"Fuck around and find out" hahaha, yesss P.S. This video kind of turned into an analysis of Rhaenyra's suitability to the throne, and I love it. I don't hate Rhaenyra, though no one can currently say that she's doing all the right things. She's fucking up royally (no pun intended, for realz), and it's hard to watch as no one seems to be pulling her up and setting her straight. Viserys and Boromund have said a couple of things, but she needs to be sat down and made to realise that she's doing a shit job of being the heir and future monarch.
The problem with viserys is also, should he sit her down she would not take him serious after she witnessed just his often he leta people walk all over him. She feels she knows better then him and does not want to repeat his flaw of being a to weak ruler no one respects. He also allowed her to be disrespected... He does not sell diplomacy well at all.
You plotted it perfectly why they lost the war. She shunned all her allies before she was even called to rule them. Little did Jacaerys know, his mother had fed him to the mercy of Storm's End before he was even in her womb. I bet Boremund was glad for Aemond to chase Jacaerys as a reminder that liege lords are as fatebound to their vassals as they are to their liege.
Little Blackwood and father brakens reaktion to the duels end is exactly, why I love asoiaf. As cool as a David vs Goliath is, it is still a murder, still a tragedy and it has consequences to both sides. No matter what people claim of grrm writing torture porn and glorefying voilance, he always makes a point against it, he always shows the consequences and how everyone end up worse for it. This scene is so on point to his style. Turning the triumph to Ash on our tongues when the hype dies and we are forced to look at the actual result
Obviously it's murder in the sense that he killed Bracken, but I don't know that Blackwood is guilty of murder in a legal sense. After all, Bracken called the kid craven. In open court, in front of dozens of witnesses, including a whole bunch of lords, a Lord Paramount and an actual princess. That's a big deal and the lad has a right to answer that insult with steel. At least in the Seven Kingdoms he does. Allowing someone to publicly call you craven is a big deal in macho Westerosi society, not answering that would be a huge mark of shame. Bracken kinda forced the kid's hand. I really like what you have to say about the scene depicting the consequences of violence though. It is very Martin-esque. George giveth, George taketh away.
@@AbcAbc-sp1od that really does not make it better, that an insult has to be followed up with a death is hella fucked up. I did not call it murder to blame the kid, he does not even look old enough to fall unter the law where I live, I did it to point out just how tragic and pointless it was. The kid might have defended his honor, but given his reaction he feels the blood on his hand no matter his intention and honor, it felt like murder
@@kallisto9166 My point was not to blame the kid, but the society, that what he did was the "right thing" as you argued is exactly is what makes it that terrible. It also does not change that we now got a dead boy, a grieving family and a traumatised kid that will never forget how it feels to end an innocent life. He does not care he defended his honor, to him it felt like murder and that is a fucked up experience for everyone, but especially someone that young to go through
@@kallisto9166 That's an interesting point about whether it was "legal". The words were sufficient reason for a honor duel but no verbal challenge was given. Just a straight jump to violence. Although, I dont know if Westeros has the rule of honor challenges before combat. Also the duel happened against the direct order of the Lord Paramount in his home. However, the princess seemingly encouraging it and doing nothing to stop it could be seen as an endorsement. It's an interesting idea how "legal" it was in Westeriosi culture
One thing I enjoy about this show is how they including other houses from different regions than focusing on the main paramount houses. It’s refreshing and keeping people interest into the lore of houses from the books. Fact they including Bracken vs Blackwood rivalry was surprised for sure but a welcomed one.
as much as i love Rhaenyra as a character, she is a MASSIVE diplomatic liability. this was her fault. ETA: taking a page out of future King Bobby B’s book and saying “stop this madness in the name of your future queen” could’ve stopped this.
Yeah her letting that bullying and fight continue in front of multiple people from noble houses was not a good look for her at all. She could have used the situation to prove to people that she could solve conflict but instead she just smiled along. Like I can't say my dude Bobby B was a good king but at least he even knew that as a king you can't let a situation like that continue or it will reflect badly on you as a leader.
Thanks for another intriguing and well thought out video. I'm really enjoying your Hot D content, and it's great to see your channel grow, you definitely deserve it!
Wow I can’t believe I just found this post randomly. I can’t forget how much I enjoyed the last Jamie POV when he finished helping the Freys in the riverlands, (Which by the way was so well-written), And his revenue travel to Raventree, and if iirc, He stops to speak with the Blackwood Lord, who he finds in in flagrant delicto in his tent, whilst laying siege to the Brackens about some lands that they are due to take back as they were the the kings and the Brackens were only their castellans/stewards in days of yore. Jamie was sort of riding high since he took back the riverlands for the Freys without any bloodshed, at least in his part. He almost casually asks Blackwood for a map detailing what lands he was due and in in turn has the self same conversation when he goes to treat with the Brackens. It’s the same situation in a way but nothing as violent occurs, once again without any bloodshed. It’s almost as if he’s getting some of his former confidence back and I think he feels quite pleased with himself that he was able to look down his nose at Walder Frey and insult him ever so subtlety. The Red Wedding does not qualify as honorable in his eyes and also he has a certain respect for the Starks, especially Catelyn. And in a strange twist of fate,(we the audience know the brotherhood without banners know his location since they were with the Freys)a woman looking for him turns out to be Brienne that he willingly follows by himself to rescue Sansa which we learn from Cersei POV and we are left with this cliffhanger! I hope that Jamie doesn’t die like this because he seems to be on a redemptive arc as he ignores Cersei’s note to come back to KL right away.
It’s worse when you consider young viserys was able to teach this stuff to dany on the run when there was no realistic expectation of her becoming a queen at the time.
I would love the feud Bracken vs Blackwood being a mirror showing how the kingdom goes against itself harder and harder. I also guess Raehnira and Daemon are both Stannis like. Younger brothers who didn't really grew up from the cradle entitled to the Throne
Great analysis of Rhaenyra's tactlessness. Doesn't make any sense why Rhaenys adores her after she has belitted her even as a little girl and straight up does not give a f about her family
Not to mention how the Velaryon involvements in the Targaryen’s affairs have straight up gutted their house. I can’t wait see when Rhaenys/Corlys learn what actually happened to their son Laenor; I mean just imagine being a parent having the realization that your “ally” made you believe your son is dead for years all so that said “ally” can elope and remarry against your family’s interests. Granddaughters or no house Velaryon does not survive the dance and their among the first casualties before it even starts in earnest.
So just to be clear because there's been a ton of really gross comments I've deleted about how "womz are bad", what I meant and should've emphasized more is that she's turning out way too much like Daemon. This is exactly what he would've done in Rhaneyra's place, and there's a reason he has no allies except Corlys and his gold cloaks across the realm despite being heir for so long. And also to reinforce its largely Viserys' fault through inattentiveness as a teacher and parent that she's an amateur at playing court. He should've spent a lot more time working on Rhaenyra than his model of valyria. That her model of good behavior is Daemon is a real failure on Viserys' part. Edit: Also because I've been asked this about 100 times on this video. Yes those are not the canon images of the Blackwoods and Amos Bracken. That's because there are no canon images of any of them, so rather than swiping someone's fan art I modified some similar images like Bittersteel (A Bracken), from GoT using Jojen Reed and Anguy as starting points, and Magic the Gathering card art. I do this all the time in my videos when I can't find artwork from official sources. If you want to know who the artist are, links to them and their websites are in the description.
Love you clarified though I think it was obvious, there was literaly no hint of it is because of her gender in the analysis and you are very right. A mention of how that is to a good part on viserys is very much on point, but people should be able to think that far. We seen him dissmiss her, allow people to dissmiss her saying she has much to learn only to not teach her in any way at all..... She is defensiv and goes against politeness, for that is what she received. Viserys showes of good will are perceived and well often are Shows of weaknesses she does not want to repeat so she emulates the only person she got on her side.... And it is the wrong move.... Analysing what she does wrong and where it will lead does not necessarily need an in depth analysis of how and why she came to make those errors, but it is still great to get that. Overall a job very well done explaining the depth behind a scene, that looked so small and fanservicey. She is digging her own grave ther and it is not the only layer there.
i mean dont you think that this scene make boremund baratheon a joke? he is the lord and he say to them to put away the swords and they dont one of them die and he does nothing imao
Just to point out, "fire and blood" is a tome of events being told by 2 different people who claim to know or were told by others what had occurred and when. Essentially a big Chinese whisper chain. Basically the show gives us the real events whereas reading the book it's based on usually gives differing opinions on events during targ reign. If anything its awesome, it leaves many events open to interpretation. Loved this video 😁
My only issue with Rhaenyra is that the showmaker were trying so hard to portray her as a flawed hero. She’s a brat and they should’ve expanded on that instead, actually make her childhood a pampered princess that’s beloved and all her actions excused by her father, show that she’s enabled and clearly preferred by her father instead of the weird “angsty daughter frustrated father” dynamics they have.
I want an animated show for a Song of Ice and Fire that just follows the Three-Eyed Raven. Could have it even be an anthology or something where each episode we fly with his crows to witness events and stories. He could act as a narrator.
One of my favorite parts of this story is how each character has flaws and if they had worked together they could have ruled the realm effectively. Imagine rhaenrya and alicint ruling together as queen and hand. Nothing says the hand has to be a man

you gained another sub today. good job. never even thought about things this way, but everything you say here makes perfect sense. great analysis. hope to see more.
Rhaenyra should have taken all of this more seriously. She may be looking for a husband, but she's also looking for support from the many houses of Westeros. She didn't make effort to build the needed friendships with the houses. Her actions here could determine whether an army would rise up to defend her or rise up against her. It seems she's oblivious to the gravity of her actions.
This is definitely your best video, expanding on “minor” events like this really fleshes the story out for my normie friends and family in a easy to engage way. Cheers!
Interesting how the Baratheon sigil still has the stag with the crown on its neck even in this time period where a Baratheon isnt on the throne for the 7 kingdoms.
Thats cause the Crowned Stag was the sigil of House Durrandon who ruled as the Storm Kings during the Age of Heroes, after defeating King Argillac Durrandon and marrying his daughter Orys Baratheon took their family sigil and words as his own during Aegon’s conquest, so the crowned stag predates the Baratheon reign of the Seven Kingdoms
I’m so glad you created a safe place to say that I do not like Rhaenyra’s character so far. I think she’s been unnecessarily rude. I get that she is a teen but what happened to her courtesies? 🥴 Sansa was a teenager and she knew better. The show is not making her look like the realms delight. 😬
I love Rhaenyra! But she also has flaws and you can see how they're weaving them into the treatment of her father and idolizing of her uncle. The flaws make these characters great, and this scene was an important one I think for demonstrating one of Rhaenyra's primary ones.
@@greenthumbstrummer Sansa is a rarity even in the North. She is only one with the manners of a Southern lady. Most seem to be like Arya. Examples are the 2 Lynanas. Lyanna Mormont & Lyanna Stark. Rhaenerya ,on ther other hand, does not have a mother. A dad who is too busy keeping the kingdom intact to hand to her. Everyone, except Uncle Daemon , seem to be below her and does everything she wants
Wow, such a good analysis! New sub here! I actually agree and I am slowly starting to dislike Rhaenyra for all of her recent actions (ep 4 & 5)… despite her aging over the last 3 or 4 episodes, she’s still not wise enough to know better and, yes, it is actually her father’s fault that she is ill prepared, but she does have to naturally know better. She’s at a disadvantage. She should be seeking to prepare herself on her own, even if her father isn’t, so that she can stand in her power knowing that she’s truly qualified. Instead, she’s acting like a brat, just like her uncle does, because she looks up to him. Even before she was in this position, when Alicent was tasked to teach her her lessons, she didn’t take it seriously. It speaks to her sense of entitlement that despite her father’s warnings about the fragility of the realm and the Targaryen’s use of dragons, that she hasn’t stiffened up to be on her best behavior. Instead, as the episodes progress, she makes worse and worse decisions, even bearing children that look nothing like her, further weakening her claim against her step mother who has made it clear that she has it out for her since the (Rhaenyra’s) sham wedding. I haven’t read the book, but I’m disappointed in her character devolving into a series of bad decision making over men. I hope that changes.
Am I the only one who actually found that scene quite disturbing? Something about a child drawing a sword and stabbing someone over petty bickering was jarring. Kinda illustrates the brutality of the world this story is taking place in.
I think you got the reaction that was intended. Grrm is a pacifist and with how it ends even those who got hyped should have reconsidered over the weeping father and clearly not enjoying his victory of the little boy
She was a teen, with a father who was not bothered by the idea of usurpation, no one gave her the ”you better be polite to this lords, your possible allies in case there is a war” speech. I can't blame her here, she was a teen being a teen and the adults there to gave bee council letting her. Now I wish we had the same scene with her half-brother. Can you imagine the jewels coming from his mouth every time he was presented with a girl not pretty enough? It always can be worse, but the greater the greatest truth in life.
Yes, but she's also an adult. At some point we should stop making excuses for her. And it's common sense to be respectful to your vassals, especially if you want to be the next sovereign I'm a feudal monarchy
This was a really good video on this one scene I would have otherwise overlooked! I'm writing my own reviews of each episode and will definitely link your video in my one for episode 4. (:

Yeah, Monarchs who understand the importance and duties of rule were a dime a dozen, and were amongst the greatest kings
Absolute Monarchs that actually made efforts to listen to the people and take their inheritance seriously, like Jaehaerys and Daeron II in their world, did well
@@mgh7634this reminded me about the democrats of USA.
Yes!!
Exactly. Rhae leaves every place in chaos
Viserys fucked this up so hard... There is literaly no way for it not to end in a bloody mess of a civil war.

It’s because of the two viable options her personality is better suited for the job.
Rhaenyra doesn't know how.
dude. she has a dragon.
in typical targaryen fashion, she is ignorant enough to be convinced that dragons alone will carry the weight of her crown.

I agree with you about Raenera lacking diplomacy when she got up and left, instead of trying to stop the boys from fighting. I totally expected her to stand up and say something like, "That's enough!" I was shocked when she indicated she was leaving. WTH?
Personally thought it was creepy that Rhaenyra expressed admiration for the bully mid-bullying.
Well her and daemons show of love is bullying eachother ...
@@AbcAbc-sp1od that is literaly what they are worried about
I hope one person calls out Rhaenyra before the series is over.
Viserys is a people pleaser and that is going to get so many people killed
I completely agree. She should be trying to replicate her great-grandmother Good Queen Alysanne and not her uncle Daemon.
I am glad you are showing why Rhae does not have support, it is clear her gender was an issue but her character was definitely what caused problems

He just wanted to be left alone to rebuild a new Valeria in Westeros.

This video made me realize just how many parallels there are between this scene and the scene where Aemond loses his eye 10 years later.
i think stories like these really show us what a rare childhood the stark children had, excluding the beheading and the harsh environment they had a lot of love and freedom other westrosi children didnt/dont
That is the most Bracken-ish looking Bracken they could have casted
The Blackwood is also quite Blackwood-looking
Bloodraven’s mother was a Blackwood while his bitter nemesis and half-brother Bittersteel was a Bracken.
My man just wanna build his Valyria Lego let him be >.
She was his favorite child who could do no wrong in his eyes
Viserys was a fool and I’d argue the worst king in Westerosi history
@Lurking Carrier yeah but viserys caused them to loose their nukes and caused aegon V to become king due to his choices
She is selfish and self involved
She’s looking down on lesser houses. Something all Targs do.
I agree. You put my feelings about this scene into words beautifully.
She is too reactionary, she only makes moves out of desperation.
She made 2 late marriage proposals for her sons
Just allowing a duel to erupt at a meeting she''s in has effects. The lords now have to worry if they send their sons to somewhere she's in charge, will they come back? They all have enemies and tempers get heated at meetings. A responsible host ensures nobody has to fear meeting them.
Yeah, the fact that she left that little boy to that duel was horrible.
Well said
STOP THIS MADNESS IN THE NAME OF YOUR KING
😃😮
I feel like it falls more on the Baratheon hosting them at storms end. It happened under his Roof
Tullys really are the most lackluster of the Great Houses.
How do you feel now
"Fuck around and find out" hahaha, yesss
Tupac vs Biggie
Alien vs Predator
Blackwoods vs Brackens
@@kallisto9166 it is a "homicide", yes. But it's not murder in any way. He was standing up to a man's fighting words.
Rarely does someone give me a different pov to see the show from, but you did.. Nice job.

You had me at “Fuck around and find out”
Wow I can’t believe I just found this post randomly.
Excellent, excellent analysis! Great writing, narration, visuals.
Thank you kindly!

Great video. Lot of points I never took the time to observe.
I agree she is burning too many bridges for someone in desperate need of friends.
I would love the feud Bracken vs Blackwood being a mirror showing how the kingdom goes against itself harder and harder. I also guess Raehnira and Daemon are both Stannis like. Younger brothers who didn't really grew up from the cradle entitled to the Throne
it's already in there. Blackwood (Bloodraven) and Bracken (Bittersteel) bastards play key roles on either side of the Blackfyre rebellion.
Lord Blackwood has called the banners!

This is one of the most subtle close readings of a scene I've ever enjoyed. Well done, you've gained a new subscriber.
Wow, thank you!
Pin this. That's my problem with show. It shouldn't satisfy the bigots instead of making them better people....
Thank you. Though I am staunchly Black, Rhae should've handled this better, but even with that this road directly leads back to Viserys.
Keep fighting the good fight against those creeps, Matt! Much love!
Very interested, I want to know more about the smaller houses they are so rich in history. I also loved the hedge knight with Duncan and Egg
Fantastic video, you pointed out how badly Rhaenyra handled that.
I love how much you have for this few min scene. SUBSCRIBED. Keep it up!
I was trying to put my finger on why I didn't care for Rhaenyra as much as others but your analysis is spot on. Earned my sub.

This is a really amazing analysis. Lots of really interesting stuff to chew on. Thanks man
One of my favorite parts of this story is how each character has flaws and if they had worked together they could have ruled the realm effectively. Imagine rhaenrya and alicint ruling together as queen and hand. Nothing says the hand has to be a man
That is what should have happened. But their human flaws, society, and sexism ruined their friendship, family, kingdom, and lives.

Agreed
Rhaenyra should have taken all of this more seriously. She may be looking for a husband, but she's also looking for support from the many houses of Westeros. She didn't make effort to build the needed friendships with the houses. Her actions here could determine whether an army would rise up to defend her or rise up against her. It seems she's oblivious to the gravity of her actions.
Great video thanks
The rings of power could never be as deep as this one scene in 5 episodes.
When pacing is so slow, their scenes will be so stretched out that they will lack this debth.
But LOTR in general lacks depth

I love Rhaenyra. My youtube name can attest to that xD
Maybe because she's not quite the "delight"
And btw our little dove Sansa was supposed to be just that.
She's a Targaryen, most of them have superiority complex.
This is such a good analysis! Very well done. A seemingly small scene with great impact. Go Team Green! Boo "King maegor with teats"
Dear joe magician, you have made so many valid points. Thank you.
No one was talking about this scene and I'm happy I wasn't the only one thinking about this.
Yes! Its always exciting when ya see new Blackwood content from Joe M 👏 🔥
Am I the only one who actually found that scene quite disturbing? Something about a child drawing a sword and stabbing someone over petty bickering was jarring. Kinda illustrates the brutality of the world this story is taking place in.
Some squires were knighted very early. For example Barristan Selmy knighted at 17. Not that surprising to be honest. The weak died young.
I think you got the reaction that was intended. Grrm is a pacifist and with how it ends even those who got hyped should have reconsidered over the weeping father and clearly not enjoying his victory of the little boy
You're supposed to show respect and not dishoner someone especially in front of a princess.
That child was a Lord, to allow an insult such as craven to go unanswered would be detrimental to himself and his people.
This show has been a little more graphic I feel like than GoT
Love this channel, great for in between these HotD episodes
