KT Tape: Carpal Tunnel

  • Carpal tunnel syndrome is caused when there is pressure in the carpal tunnel (a space in the wrist) that compresses the median nerve, causing the nerve to function improperly. Because the carpal tunnel is surrounded by bone on one side, and an inflexible ligament on the other, if pressure builds, the nerve has nowhere to go and becomes pinched.
    When carpal tunnel syndrome occurs, the normal functions of muscle control and sensory communications in the hand are impaired. Problems that can occur in carpal tunnel syndrome include:
    Pain
    Numbness
    Tingling
    Weakness
    The KT Tape application as described below can help stabilize the carpel tunnel aiding in the normal function of the medina nerve. If KT tape does not bring relief, heavier bracing may be suitable. If neither of these bring relief, seek professional medical attention where additional measures can be taken including physical therapy, injections or surgery.

    It lifts the skin up and away from the soft tissue beneath which helps open up the area, decrease pressure and pain while supporting and stabilizing.

    Got diagnosed with Carpal Tunnel recently. The thick bulky braces works but can be irritating sometimes especially when I’m doing my tasks. So I was advised to use some kt tape on my hand & *I LOVE IT* it helps lessen my pain & it’s not bulky at all, plus it comes in a lot of fun different colors 💕

    This helps so much. I was wearing a bulky brace at work but it made doing my job (cook for a school / paraprofessional) difficult. This taping technique relieved the pain in my wrist/fingers and allows for more range of motion.
    My only issue is the tape that I wrap around my wrist almost immediately starts peeling off. It’s like it doesn’t do well adhering to itself. I don’t touch the adhesive side at all while applying and I don’t put any tension on the anchors so it’s not pulling due to tension, it’s just coming off.

    For you, it would have more utility wearing it outside of activity. It helps improve circulation and reduces swelling around a nerve. It's definitely not as effective as a stand alone treatment, but part of the process along with manual therapy and mobilization to reduce nerve entrapment and improve neural gliding.

    If you are over the age of 60 and you have carpal tunnel symptoms and you have not started anything new (hobbies, exercises, work) that you think is the cause, please see your doctor and look into a disease called amyloidosis. Carpal tunnel can be an early symptom and it's a very serious disease. My father had carpal tunnel for months and they missed the amyloidosis until he started to have heart arrhythmia problems.

      Do stretches - the pain is casued by tension in the nerve

    @carlamalven It's probably a small application issue. Here are some tips that will help it stick:
    1) Skin Prep - Clean the area with rubbing alcohol.
    2) If you cut the tape, round those edges back out.
    3) Stretch your joint before taping.
    4) No tension on the ends! if you stretch the ends it will come off.
    5) Friction rub. after applying tape- rub over it with your hand to make sure edges are down and to activate the adhesive.
    6) Apply your tape at least 30 minutes before activity.

  • @aritheory
    @aritheory 12 лет назад +2

    @ArizonaMMJ This sounds like cubital tunnel syndrome or ulnar nerve entrapment. This is a hard one to fix directly with KT tape as it originates from long-term pressure on the ulnar nerve. Your best bet would be to figure out what pressure is causing it and pad the area where your wrist/arm makes contact. This is mostly an ergonomic issue.

My question is, is that will it be sealed enough to prevent little tiny hair from sticking and getting into it. And also deal with continuing getting our hands wet.

I anchor one on the edges of the palm below the pointer and pinkie, streched tight across the back of the hand. The other similarly positioned lower, anchored at the heel of the hand and base where thumb meets wrist. I was hoping to find a way to keep the tape anchors from coming loose from my palm overnight. I must be sweaty! Lol. This video seems to be the opposite of what I'm trying to achieve. I like how this is for carpal tunnel, but if you have carpal tunnel flexing / extending your hand like that causes immense pain/numbness, so stupid. If you’re having a flare up you literally can’t do that lol.

    your doing it wrong. please see a licensed professional like an occupational therapist for training. Ps you made a tourniquet wrapping the pink on itself despite no tension, the way the tape is made, makes it into a tourniquet

    • @candiceparks7161
      @candiceparks7161 9 лет назад +1

      Do you even know how a tourniquet works? It needs tension all the way around to cut off blood supply....this definitely doesn't do that.

      he's a PT....

    • @bluedestroyer87
      @bluedestroyer87 7 лет назад +1

      He's also not very smart, any PT would know that carpal tunnel can also be caused from a pinched median nerve anywhere along the arm that includes the brachial plexus. So if any of the nerves from C1-T1 are pinched it could give you symptoms of carpal tunnel.

    • @gudsonsousa7511
      @gudsonsousa7511 6 лет назад +2

      bluedestroyer87 nope! remember that the median nerve comes ONLY from c5-t1 nerve roots (brachial plexus)

      @@bluedestroyer87 ..but he is talking about true carpel tunnel syndrome. Its just about relief, not remedy.
