This has to be the cheapest winch bumper for our 4th gen 4Runners out there. After posting my first Hooke Road off road bumper video, I was flooded with comments from people asking about winch mounts. Since then I found a new Tacoma WINCH bumper from Hooke Road for only $500. I HAD TO HAVE IT. So I reached out to Hooke Road asking for a collaboration opportunity and they agreed to send me this bumper. Awesome! I know Most of us have been putting off getting an offroad bumper for our 4Runner because of one thing, PRICE. That issue has finally been solved even for a winch bumper! Faced with the jaw-droppingly low prices of bumpers from these up-and-coming brands for other trucks, we had to get a bit creative. The fix? A custom mod, and trust me, it's one of the easiest hacks in the game. Just a smidge of tinkering-trimming here, drilling a couple of holes there-and voila! You can snugly pop a 2nd Gen Tacoma front bumper onto your 4th Gen 4Runner. It's like they were made for each other! This is hands down the thriftiest bumper solution for the 4th gen 4Runner. No rocket science involved, just a bit of DIY magic in your own driveway with some basic tools anyone can handle.
I had seen your previous Hooke off-road bumper video and was strongly considering it for my budget build 2006 4Runner. So glad you posted this video with the winch option, just ordered it and the fog lights from your affiliate links. Appreciate you being the guinea pig for us 4th gen owners!

I'm a bit confused - went to the link and bumpers are for Tacoma. Went to Hooke Road site and they only list 10-24 4runners, no gen 4 at all. I have a 2007 Gen 4 4runner and like the bumper you installed but can't find it. Maybe you can help if able....
I totally understand the confusion, but the bumper in the video is a Tacoma bumper. That’s why it required mild modification to fit.

Great info on installing…rough country has some on their scratch and dent site for $399 after discounts. They are Normally $900. Not sure why because it was in perfect new condition. They even come with the rough country led lights and d rings. I just installed mine yesterday it turned out great.

I like the previous bumper more tbh. The vibrations from the mesh panel in the bumper was annoying, but I found a way to dampen it. I don’t want a winch either and am trying to keep weight off the front. Thanks for the videos!
The last one was really great. Suuuper light weight. After swapping in the heavy bumper + the winch I can definitely feel something up there.
I never had sound from the mesh up front. But glad you were able to dampen it!

That's neat that a steel after market bumper is fairly cheap. I just replaced a stock steel bumper on my Chevy van and it was $300 just for the skin!
I'm not comfortable adding a winch on my 03 4Runner as others have tried it and I heard mixed reviews. One person said that because they were using the stock bumper mountings to the frame, the winch bent the bumper a little at that point. A recovery company commented that doing recoveries on Toyotas from the front are difficult no matter what kind of bumper they have because of those stock bumper mounting points.
Interesting. I haven't heard of anyone having those issues with the 4runners. But still, this bumper and the one I had before are super key for high clearance. Helps massively with approach angle and getting your tires on a rock or incline instead of hitting the big stock bumper.
@@dillansgarage I read somewhere that there is an aftermarket bumper that in addition to the factory bumper bolts to the frame, it has an extra bracket that attaches to the frame giving it more rigidity. The downside was the price. I don't do crazy rock crawling or washed out trails. I realize my limits.

Do you think sanding each piece then welding it together after bolting it would add strength? The only thing I don’t like about it is the three piece design but I’m thinking why not make it one😂
It might add a little rigidity, but bolt are actually pretty strong. The connection is good. If you were going to go through that effort then I’d say weld more plate to the inside of the bumper to add thickness and reinforce the winch plate.

I went through the same process! Haha for a long time I thought they overall were silly looking and expensive. The idea started to grow on me after scrubbing my stock bumper offroad and then when I found “the one” I couldn’t pass it up.

I’m glad you like it. Thank you! The spot above the winch is not design for a light bar and it would probably be too tight for one of you install a winch. I also recommend leaving it open to allow air to flow through your radiator better.
Thanks for posting this. I really appreciate it. I ordered the bumper through the link. One thing I noticed when gathering the needed supplies for the installation is that the lengths on the door rubber seals seems excessive. Did you just want to have extra? Or would 10' be enough?
@@chachisincharge glad you found it helpful! I forget exactly what length I posted. It’s possible shorter options weren’t available at the time I posted. 10ft is plenty. I’m also very diy minded so I like to have extras. Mine was actually left over from another project

Is the fair lead modification video coming at all? Seems the way they designed that lip where the license bracket is makes it hard for any winch, my X-bull fairlead wouldn't fit. Did you just cut below the license bracket?
@@gmotee I plan to just cut a hole in the right place. Sorry I haven’t made the video yet. We moved recently and I finally have a shop, but I don’t have electricity run to the shop yet. Electrician keeps pushing it back.
How's the winch installation? You need to remove the bumper before throwing the winch on?
@@lucasrhyan4778 you don’t have to remove the bumper fully just need to loosen the bolts and tip it forward
Also, the winch mount in the video is wrong. It has to be flipped up so that the winch properly matches the slot in front. Found out the hard way of getting it all together and realizing the winch sits too low.

Thank you! Are you referring to the way bumper separate from the body? If so, that’s just how it is. It does that with the stock bumper too, you just can’t see it cause the plastic flexes with the movement.

@@bassfishing7249 it would work on yours basically the same as mine. The only thing that would be different is you need fog lights with turn signals built into them so you can wire your oem turn signal harness. I have a link for yours in the description also

We need a rear bumper mod with Tire Carrier. How can we modify a 5th gen to fit?
@@JimmyDistheMan they actually basically just fit! I did one and haven’t put the video out. All I needed to do was cut the oem bumper to fit and it was basically just bolt on

Any issues with using the factory wiring with the LEDs it didnt melt the wiring or anything? Just ordered all the stuff for a steal on black Friday deals.
@@Towmater777 nope! The LEDs and pull less power than the stock lights. And even in the chance something was done incorrectly the fuse would pop before melting any wires. Stoked you got good deals on everything!

Thank you! I’m super happy with it. I sold the old bumper. I actually really liked that one and I originally planned to modify it to add a winch mount, but I just don’t see anyone doing that when this one is so cheap and has a winch mount. So it didn’t feel relevant anymore.

If you plan to do heavy winching then I’d recommend reinforcing the winch plate and mount. I wouldn’t count on it out of the box if you’re suctioned down into a mud pool. But out of sand and snow I’d probably say it’s ok

Thanks! I’d say they’re somewhere in between. It your auctioned down in mid I’d want to weld in reinforcements before tugging hard. But I wouldn’t hesitate to pull it out of sand as is
Great video and instructions. But just buy an ARB a steel bumper is supposed to protect your vehicle I couldn’t see this doing much other than smashing into your radiator and headlights
Thank you! You’re right, if you want ultimate protection then you’ll have to spend a lot more. If you want something better than the stock plastic that provides much better clearance at a great price, this is the way to go.

Hey bud sweet find! I have an 03 with the 06 lights and still have the 03 grille. What bumper would you recommend for my situation? I did white raptor liner on the whole truck. Just as a side tid bit.
Howdy! Sounds like you have the dream setup cause you won’t have to trim your grill at all, and your blinkers are a non-issue since you have 06-09 headlights so you’ll be able to run just regular fogs. The only thing I’m not totally certain about is whether or not you’ll need to trim the bull bar. It might clear as it is with the shorter 03 grill.
The short answer is to just follow the 06-09 instructions and product list.
I bought the same bumper but the left and right stick out quite a bit from the fenders.

Thanks! It wouldn’t work out of the box with a body lift. You could get some 1/4” plate and drill some holes to make an adapter though! If you’re in SoCal I’d make a video of it and do your install. A few people have asked about that.
I know that the lexus GX470 is a 4th gen 4runner for the most part.
Does this bumper work similarly on a 2006 GX470?
@@prithviprasad8645 I’m sure the frame bumper mounts are similar if not the same, but the body is is different. So it wouldn’t be a direct fit like the 4runner

Have you used the winch? Wondering if that winch plate is plenty strong for occasional recovery?
I would trust it for mild recovery but not super heavy straining recoveries. I’ll eventually end up bracing it to make it strong
Thanks for the honesty! I hope to never need the winch for anything bad, but i spend a lot of time in the mountains, and i hate knowing i dont have a winch on my 4runner if needed. The bumper in your video costs about as much as a budbuilt hidden winch mount.
i have the front, rear bumper, roof rack and bed rack from hooke road and theyre engineering behind it sucks, tolerances are to close in some areas, brackets done even work on bed rack, roof rack had holes missing to bolt it together lol, theyre customer service also sucks. oh and everything comes pre scratched to save you the trouble.
I didn’t have any issues with the first bumper, but I did have to modify a couple things to get the mount brackets to install. For 1/5 the price and china made products I would expect some of that. That’s crazy you straight up had missing holes though! I’ll likely be working with them more and will be able to provide more direct feedback. One thing I ran into is the directions said that you can you use Tacoma fogs, or 4” aftermarket fogs. The adapter was obviously a specific bolt pattern, so I had to email them to ask what “aftermarket” light they were talking about. Turns out it’s a Jeep jk fog light adapter. They said they’ll update the directions. So hopefully I can help influence more of that since they don’t want bad content publicity.

Thank you! The grill and body lines are pretty different on the Gx. I don’t think it would bolt up as easy as this did, but anything is possible with an angle grinder and welder!

Any idea if 3rd gen tacoma bumpers would work? The hooke winch bumpers look identical almost, but not sure about mounting points.
The mounts line up, but the bumper sits much lower. It would have to be cut and re-welded up higher.

Working on it! Didn’t you see the linked RUclips short I made explaining the winch install? It pops up as a “card” at the top around when I’m talking about the winch
I’ll be doing a body lift install soon and I’m going to address a few things at the same time, like the winch too.

Not from Hooke road cause they only have pickup truck bumpers. It would require too much modification to make it fit right on a 4Runner. I do however plan to make a video installing the eBay 5th gen bumper on the 4th gen. That’s definitely the way to go. I’ve seen it a couple times and looks great. Just gotta wait for finances to catch up.

@ I ended up getting a no-name China bumper. Similar though cause it was basically bolt-on and just took some time to trim the oem plastic bumper to fit. They have them on Amazon now too. I’ll add them to the link in the description.

The design of the Tacoma rears would require a pretty weird cut of the stock bumper. Your best bet in the 5th gen 4Runner rear bumper from Amazon for $700ish. I’ve seen a few people who’ve done it and said it was pretty easy. I’ll be making a video on that as soon as I can get my hands on one

They do! This is the one I’ve seen used. Just need to trim the stock spare tire mounts a little.

Bought the bumper and lights for a 05 but i can’t figure out how to wire in the lights.
Did you get the wiring adapter in the list?
@@dillansgarage yeah I did, they are direct plug and play into the turn signal bulb but it only turns on the white light and blinker doesn’t work

I don’t see it on their website. I only see the 3rd gen Tacoma version. Looks super similar but mounts lower.

@@averypaavola7480 you would definitely need to modify some thing. Either make an adapter plate that moves the bumper up or drill, new holes and only use three nuts to hold the bumper on.
I guess you can also re-drill the holes where the bumper mounts slide into the bumper and trim the bottom of those mounts. The bumper would not accommodate a body lift right out of the box though.

Good question. Might fit with some extra trimming but I really can’t say how easy it’ll be.

I'm trying to push them that way. But these companies can be hard to sway into making decisions like that. For now it's a small trade off to make the budget options work.

A week for the winch video, it's been 6 months
It’s been a really gnarly 6 months and had to get a lot of content done for other partners. The which mounting seemed easy enough that it wasn’t the highest priority. Then we moved to a new place and has a run down shop I’m in high gear to get fixed up so I can continue shooting content.
