"And So the Wind Blew..." by Gene Koshinski
Performed by Gene Koshinski and Benjamin Toth
Recorded LIVE (unedited) in Weber Music Hall on the campus of University of Minnesota Duluth on April 8, 2014
Sound recording by Don Schraufnagel
Program Notes:
And So the Wind Blew... began with the idea of composing for my personal collection of wind chimes (outdoor chimes, not mark trees). After I decided to compose this piece I started thinking about the sound of wind chimes and how the wind is typically the performer of these instruments. I put even more thought into this concept and realized that the wind could perform a "piece" on wind chimes with an infinite amount of variations, day in and day out. Perhaps when the wind is blowing and activating wind chimes hanging on a porch or on a tree in the backyard we do not pay enough attention to the wind's performance. (Just a thought...)
In order to compose the piece I imagined a situation where the wind could have an opportunity to perform on stage with musicians and traditional percussion instruments; each influencing and complementing each other. To facilitate this somewhat unrealistic scenario the vibraphone player must play the wind's part whenever playing the wind chimes. In order to play the role of the wind, the vibraphone player must think carefully about how wind chimes sound in nature and integrate that sound into this piece. There are moments in the piece where different instruments are highlighted; however the wind chimes were always at the focal point from the compositional point of view. This is important to keep in mind.
The piece ends with the melody of the wind chimes floating over the sound of an ocean drum, a representation of the wind blowing out to sea...
-Gene Koshinski
“What instrument do you play?”
“The front porch”

At first I was wondering how I got here and then I saw this glorious comment and now I’m wiping away tears cause I can’t stop laughing. Seriously though...the sounds are so soothing...but I can’t stop laughing....this is wonderful.
If only all comments were this good.
😂😂
Its quite difficult to sound good on ‘the front porch’ tho
Imagine playing a duet for 20 minutes with such intricate notes. Sounds like hell in theory but sounds like heaven when performed.
True lol
Listening while watching snow fall out my window.
Very different from Snow Falls, by Morton Feldman.
undoubtedly one of the most beautiful percussion pieces I've ever heard
Thanks Ian!
Definetely!
Agreed
With your eyes closed it seems so relaxing but when you're watching it you realize how much work is being put in.
Here's me thinking well, I'm not going to watch the WHOLE thing...22:49 minutes later. Cool. Percussionists must be the best multitaskers on Earth. Huge respect.
Thanks so much guys!
Thank you Gene!
That's such a beautiful piece, I love it. Thank you for bringing a little more beauty into the world, Gene. It's appreciated.
Gene Koshinski this was life changing for me to experience this performance! Thank you for creating and sharing it and the description about the origination and ideas behind the sounds. Absolutely beautiful and a masterpiece.
@@camhowelse5797 I'm glad you enjoyed the piece. This is one of my favorite pieces to play and I don't get to do it as often as I'd like...
No. Thank you!
Mesmorizing and meditative.
Reminds a little bit of C418 in a few places. A very lovely composition.
Honestly, I had 1 min of goosebumps near the end of this piece, and I cried a little thinking on how music can carry us to a very distant place... I couldn't stop watching until the end. It's just beautiful. Congrats!
The power of music. One the the universal language
always wanted to write a symphony for wind chimes...this makes me happy 😊
After two years, still coming back to this work of art.

It's the vibrations that are the powerful healing.
My plants and I L❤️VE this piece ❣️
Namaste 🙏
That ending is so wonderful - this is truly visionary work and sound art, truly a masterpiece in every way from writing to performance to capturing the sound and video. This to me is a miracle in existence I am so thankful for. Chimes are such a favorite sound of mine. I’m so thankful for this piece :) !!!!!!!!! 💗🌟🦋🌎🌍🌏🌟🦋💗
easily one of the most beautiful things my ears have been exposed to
This is my favorite “go-to” sound experience lately
Close your eyes and listen to this with headphones on in a dark room and let your imagination do the rest

The best.
Beautiful piece! I kept looking at the large frame drum on the table wondering when it was going to get played? Then while watching I heard an ocean drum, BINGO! love the way it ends the piece. Vibraphone, crotales, wind chimes and bowls! Very nice. Reminds of a cross between Steve Reich and Toro Takemitsu.
This is ethereal, imaginative. So glad this piece was made.
omg literal chills as it starts I love chimes!!!!
🧚♀️It's like a fairytail 🧚♀️
This touches every feeling, and emotion I have ever known.
Thank you ..........
For this beauty
Gene-ious!! Sorry for the pun, I just love this piece. Thank you.
The recording is sublime as always. It really is a joy to discover all these subtle nuances.
We are in a renaissance of music. Wonderfully performed.
The simplicity of using most every day articles, save a few not so, this was brilliant!!!!!!!!
I love the sound of wind Chimes so relaxing sound
Incredible performace! Beautiful music! Life changing experience... I'm beyond words...
I love that has many types of anime wind chimes all over the place and one black Nightcore anime wind chime and a xylophone and fancy bowls and drums and shakers and a big zimle.
Damn, I needed that. Wonderful piece!
I ADORE this piece! Would love to take a glimpse of the score as well, though it surely must be chaos. I like the randomness element from the windchimes, you never know how the will move and what sound exactly they will produce. I would also like to see this being performed outside having the extra element of the wind playing the chimes. It would be fantastic!
Wow Gene!!!! Incredible!
This is so a beautiful piece! I would like to see the score.
18:50 I've never heard that sound before!
I think I heard it near the beginning of a Minecraft Creative track.
This is just amazing. So beautiful!
I really love percussion only pieces like this. Enjoyed it from it first to the last second. Fantastic.
We want more! Like an hour worth! :)
Ah, i figured this was only the first movement. Part II is a Fender Stratocaster with water-bowls.
I love ALL the colours. ESPECIALLY the bow on the cymbals edge. I will use that on my percussion rig.
Great piece! Love it!
wonderful , astonishing , in this world of noise we need these so much

This is so cosmic and beautiful.
Beautiful
Musical excellence! I'm fortunate! Thank you.
Wow, a beautiful and relaxing performance.
I was just thinking that every time this song is played it will be, while similar, different based on the fact wind chimes are random. Which means that the person making the song is personally preforming the piece specifically for the room and that makes the song special for anyone seeing this live! Also I just read the description of the video and it specifically stated what I just wrote sooooooo I don't know what to say, um, read your description kids to not look like an idiot?
there are some who would argue that since a composer can never specify every detail about how a piece should be played, there is necessarily some interpretation on the part of the performer beyond what the composer says, and so the player's particular performance is an integral part of the process of creating the experience and by extension the piece itself. in essence, then, every piece is rewritten in some small respect every time it is performed
Outstanding!
What a beautiful performance
Beautiful!❤

The bell is a very special instrument. The sound trapped within the bell comes away from the bell in a spiral form.
