still life! it's their 4th one, and my all time favorite album. later opeth did clean up the abruptness in their transitions, but nothing beats the actual creativity in the riffs/acoustics they came up with in still life and blackwater park for me. can't wait to see more.

Still Life is also my all time favorite from Opeth.
Listening to the album in its entirety is an absolute must.

Thank you! Really glad to have you along! I will be doing every song on Still Life. :)

This was a song that took me about 4-5 listens to really appreciate. When it comes to Opeth sometimes that happens because of all the different themes they have in their music and changes in mood within a song. But once you get the changes the song blossoms.

Not opposed to music that takes a few listens to appreciate!

Really enjoying these reactions. As far as I'm concerned you should do every single Opeth song and then just start over again.

I do get the feeling that I'll run out of Opeth songs at this rate! 🤣 There's always live stuff though!

I will return to this album! I think it's the best candidate for another full album. 😀
      Really glad you enjoyed it!!!

Still Life is their fourth album, but it's also the first where they start to sound recognizably like themselves. The earlier stuff is what I'd call juvenilia - pretty impressive for something written by teenagers, but it doesn't really cohere. The acoustics and occasional cleans were there from the start, but Mikael didn't have his compositional chops yet and the songs sounded more like collections of random ideas rather than actual songs. Still Life is a lot more coherent than what came before, but to me, it isn't quite there yet. Serenity is a case in point - it's mostly a bunch of (admittedly pretty cool) riffs + a nice jazzy section. Still, there is a lot to enjoy in the album and it is a fan favourite, so do expect more requests for it. It's also one of only two Opeth records that tell a recognizable linear story, so maybe you'll get more from the lyrics than you usually do.

Mikael has stated before that Alice in Chains was a big influence in their harmonies. I would suggest you listen to Benighted which is off this same album. It shows off a lot more vocal harmonies i it.

Love a good vocal harmony! That sounds amazing. :)

There are plenty of good ideas and riff sections on this album. The one thing I'm not fond of is how it feels like a bunch of fairly random parts are stringed together. Mikael's composition skills definitely improved after this album. The production on the first four albums range from horrid to okay (in that order). The first four albums are basically the first era of Opeth (although Still Life is somewhere between first and second era) with the second era starting with Blackwater Park and ending with Watershed. The third post-growl era started with Heritage and is still ongoing.
I never listen to the first three albums these days. I bought Morningrise the year it was released and I listened to those first three albums quite a lot but Still Life was the first sign that Opeth was maturing and Mikael's writing skills had improved immensely by the time he wrote Blackwater Park which also brought in the production qualities we've been used to ever since. I rarely listen to Still Life songs either, mostly because the quality of the songs and production make the first era albums sound bleh to me. It's obviously my personal subjective opinion. ;)

I'm that way with certain bands, so I totally get it. Of course, I'm also the opposite with other bands! Sometimes the more experimental early work is the juiciest...so far I think I'm likely to align with you on this though.

You should check out wilderun-the unimaginable zero summer. They have influence from opeth ,which is a good thing because opeth is my favorite band, but they're so good in their own right

I don't remember if it was you the first time, but this is the second time I've seen Wilderun pop up! Definitely interested! Added this song to the list.

This would be my last choice for Still Life tracks, it´s still pretty decent though but all the other tracks are much better imo. I know it´s pretty popular by Opeth fans though, to each his own. White Cluster is my favorite for the album, such a banger and very underrated, almost no people ever react to it.

Exactly the same... This is probably my favorite album by Opeth, songs like Godhead's Lament or Moonlapse Vertigo do it for me... Serenity Painted Death is definitely a great track but lacks something and I can`t explain what

The most underrated, in my opinion, is Moonlapse Vertigo. Such a layered piece of art.

I'm a massive Opeth fan, I like both, old and new stuff, as I love metal and prog. My recommendation would be, to listen to whole albums. There's a lot of songs I (and many others) could recommend to listen to, but I feel like exploring those albums in whole gives you completely different experience, even though not all are the concept albums (like Still Life is for example). I would strongly suggest to listen to this record in one go, same with My Arms Your Hearse, even Blackwater Park (can it get more sorrow and heavy at the same time?! [Steven Wilson

Fav of the album and top 3 (or whatever) overall 🤘
But I didn't think that in 2004, and maybe won't again by 2044.
