- The catastrophe at Black Mesa had brought the worst out of the research facility, and now the HECU were brought in to clean up the mess. Obscurity in their orders only sought to bring confusions between their ranks.
Adrian Shephard was sent with his squad on that wretched day, as he was part of the emergency platoon, which's purpose was to react as fast as possible if anything were to go wrong with the experimentation.

HL Marines are the most bad ass depiction of human infantry.
They see ALIENS and they just go "WE GOT UGLIES! SQUAD! MOVE IN!"
From roughly counting, the entire HECU battalion was wiped out at Black Mesa, with Shepard being the sole survivor.
Again, a small battalion size of Marines, wiped out.

@Jacqueline da Silva Lopes iirc Gearbox had a ARMY (not MARINE) veteran in their team during the Opposing Force's development. They've managed to add some great mil flavor, but naturally ARMY terms are used for the HECU Marines such as calling Marine a Soldier time to time, and also calling Corpsman a Medic etc etc.
Maybe HECU was supposed to belong ARMY all along but later on Gearbox changed them into MARINES during mid development for the lore?
Keep it mind that those were the late 90s, not much of sources were available on the internet. However, I'm awfully suprised that Valve gotten a wind of the Operation Urban Warrior (which still there's not much info about it) aka the thing that they've taken inspiration from while designing the HECU/Grunts.
@@hayro252 I think it was definitely intended for them to be Army until Opposing Force. The helicopter even says army, theyre called soldiers, they wear berets. Only time USMC is mentioned is in Opposing Force
Not sure exactly but I think the US army is for homeland defense and black mesa is in the US so yeah army I’d say.
@@thealumni69 its actually more along the lines of a joint operation, with Marines being the central boots on the ground element. The Army Apaches are there only for fire support just like the Marine Harriers and Marine V-22 Ospreys. The Berets are akin to Air Force Combat Controllers (they wear berets more than the Army would), who are squad leaders of the HECU SF Marines since many of them are attached to Special Forces.
The mission of a combat controller is to deploy, undetected, into combat and hostile environments to establish assault zones or airfields, while simultaneously conducting air traffic control, fire support, command and control, direct action, counter-terrorism, foreign internal defense, humanitarian assistance and special reconnaissance in the joint arena.
And the soldiers part, yeah that is unfortunately a military term translation error that most Hollywood movies and games in the past portrayed inaccurately when they wrote those scripts.
@@sirpoglet2764 I believe you are thinking more along the lines of the National Guard and the Department of Homeland Security. The Army would only get involved it was large scale threat that would be too much for the latter I mentioned to handle. Though in the case of Black Mesa, its essentially an alien invasion and someone behind the scenes already had Marine Special Forces ready to respond should an incident happen.

Is blender better then s2fm?
It's hard to learn and isn't as capable of smooth playbacks with a lot of models in frame. S2FM can handle a lot of characters in one shot, but is limited to only doing animation on it, since it's what it was created for.
